Loud pop music greets you as you walk in. Zauq is to the right. It seemed like a lot of folks were picking up classic American fare: wings, onion rings, other chicken dishes, but I was coming for some Halal food. I got a large rice platter with mixed chicken and lamb. The shredded chicken was okay; could have used more seasoning or something, but that's why they give you white and/or red sauce. The lamb was basically cubed gyro meat, which I enjoyed; I would get a platter of just this next time. You can add as many toppings as you'd like, including onion, lettuce, tomato, chickpeas, pickles, and hot peppers. Make it what you want. For $9.99 (as of 2025), that's a bargain for the amount of food you get. Overall it tasted pretty good. I think if I come back I'm going to try out the falafel and/or the fried chicken sandwiches. The folks are friendly and fast. The whole place, staff and clientele, seemed to be a melting pot of every ethnic group imaginable - Woodlawn baby, gotta love it. There's a Shahada posted above the counter in both Arabic and English, but the food is for everyone and I'm here to say, it's solid. You won't be disappointed.

The order took a while, which is to be expected. While the texture of the chicken was very nice, the flavor was a bit off. The chicken was seasoned well, but I think they need to change their oil more frequently. I've had BBQ chicken in Korea, and you can clearly taste the flavor of olive oil in their fried chicken. However, I couldn't taste it here, but I could taste the flavor of the oil. It was very light and not too offputting, but still present.

I'd definitely recommend the classic honey garlic/soy garlic wings if you haven't had Korean fried chicken before. The galbi wings were disappointing. The sauce felt off, artificial almost? I could tell that they were going for a more Smokey flavor, though. It's a little pricy, with the small order of wings (8) being about $16-17 ish depending on what flavor you get. In other locations of this chain, they usually have some pickled radish banchan, but this location didn't. The service has gotten worse over time from what I've experienced. They've always had a bit of a longer wait time (20-35 mins), so I don't recommend ordering if you're super hungry and need food instantly. The workers have gotten a bit more rude; we had been waiting for our order for 45-50 mins at this point, and we asked if the order went through, because with the order taking that long, we weren't sure. I totally understand that the World Cup Final was playing on the big screen and they were a little busier than usual, but they gave my friend the most disgusted look when they asked how our order was doing. The worker retorted a sharp "can't you wait?" with an eye roll. I felt really bad at first for bothering them but it was also pretty rude of them to respond that way. It took about 10 more minutes to get our order. Not worth the almost hour long wait.

The fish was beautifully seasoned, with rich sweet-and-savory sauces that really brought out its flavor. The cornbread was incredibly comforting, and we all loved how well everything came together. 9/10 Baby Back Ribs - Very meaty and tender. The meat fell off the bone effortlessly, and the flavor was deep and satisfying. The jambalaya and shrimp boat were also wonderful. I especially loved the creamy, flavorful rice in the jambalaya, and the portions were very filling. Also, their bread was amazing--each of us couldn't stop snapping pieces off of it. Overall All of our servers were kind and enthusiastic. The overall vibe of the restaurant was cheerful and cozy--definitely a great place to hang out with friends!

It's been open since 1994, and it's easy to see why. Ethel's is really homey and cozy and comfortable. It feels like you've taken a little day trip to New Orleans. We each ordered a couple of drinks (something tropical with rum for me, a martini for my friend, and sangria for my other friend). We shared a few items from their menu: Creole Shrimp Boat (sauteed shrimp, mussels, jumbo lump crab meat, and the fish of the day simmered in a fire roasted red bell pepper sauce, with Creole rice and the vegetable of the day); Hot Cat Stack (fried catfish stacked with sweet and savory Andouille sausage cornbread, spicy crawfish red pepper meunière, honey chive compound butter, hot honey, and the vegetable of the day); a half rack of ribs (slow roasted ribs, Louisiana dry rub seasoning, mopped in BBQ sauce, mashed potato, and the vegetable of the day); and a strawberry bread pudding. Everything was delicious. I liked every course we had, but the Hot Cat Stack was wow. I've had a lot of bad to blah bread puddings in my life, but Ethel's wasn't bad or blah. It was delicious - and not dry at all. At all. The service was friendly but not the fastest (we waited a while for dessert) and maybe just a little scattered! But we eventually got everything we ordered, and the meal overall was wonderful: delicious, fun, casual. I'd love to return!
