Pros: - Sits above the high school with a nice view and seating outside to overlook it - Friendly staff - Well made food at a decent price, price is a bit on the higher side but food matches that it seems Cons: - It's location is a bit hard to find/get to

After a long, hot day of kayaking, my wife and I stopped by The Canary Grill, hoping to relax and…read moreenjoy a good meal. The hostess was welcoming and quickly seated us. From there, however, things took a turn, and the reason this review is only three stars can be summed up in one word: KAREN. Karen was our server, though from the moment she arrived at our table, it was clear she didn't want to be. Her body language screamed disinterest, and she made minimal effort to hide her preference for socializing with a nearby table of bikers over doing her actual job. When we inquired about a specialty lemonade advertised at the table, Karen said she'd check if they had it. Instead, she first visited the biker table, chatted for a while, wandered to the bar, and then circled back to the bikers again before finally letting us know it was available. We placed our drink orders and Karen returned to the biker party. Our drinks arrived 15 minutes later, and we placed our meal orders: a ribeye with baked potato (sour cream and butter) and coleslaw for me, and a crab cake with broccoli and the same baked potato setup for my wife. Karen? Back at the biker table. The food came out about 20 minutes later and I'll be honest; it was excellent. The chef grilled my ribeye to perfection. I'm not usually a fan of baked potatoes, but this one changed my mind. Even the coleslaw, though a bit too creamy for me, was fresh and flavorful. Presentation was spot on. But as we ate, dehydrated from hours in 100-degree heat, we realized we needed water refills and extra sour cream. Unfortunately, by then, the biker party had left, and so had Karen. After another 10 minutes of searching, we flagged her down. She returned with a larger water glass but no lemon. We had to flag her down again, and another server eventually brought the lemon. And just as we were halfway through our entrées, Karen dropped off the check and asked if we wanted dessert. The implication was clear: she'd already decided we wouldn't be needing it. When we finally finished our meal, we waited. And waited. Karen had vanished. I approached the hostess to ask if we could check out, and she said she'd find Karen. This seemed to trigger an all-out search effort by the staff, as multiple servers began looking for her. Eventually, another server processed our bill. As we were pulling out of the parking lot, we spotted Karen laughing with one biker outside. Maybe she's ready to trade in her apron for a leather jacket, but her lack of professionalism did a disservice to the kitchen and the rest of the staff. To be clear: the food was fantastic. The kitchen deserves five stars. But Karen's service dragged the entire experience down. A server's job is to be present, attentive, and at the very least courteous -- none of which applied here.

Wow! Friends that I stayed with that have lived in Berkeley Springs for over 40 years had never…read moreeaten here, but we (a group of 8) decided to go in on a holiday Monday morning for a last day of vacation breakfast, and were not disappointed in any way! We were immediately seated, which in itself is no small feat for a group of 8. Drinks came out fast and right. We ordered off the menu, with no weird requests, and the food also came out fast. The portions are VERY generous, considering the prices are quite reasonable. The decor looks like most other truck stops, but this one has award-winning local photographs taken by (I think) one of the owners. Some of the photos are for sale as framed art, and are quite beautiful. If you're in Berkeley Springs, and you're hungry, don't drive by, don't let the outside fool you. Go in and get a great meal.

I don't frequent truck stops, but I'm pretty sure that most other truck stops don't have wait staff that wears medical scrubs as their "uniform". I'm not sure if this is normal attire, but it really doesn't matter to me. It's more like a snapshot of a small town rural American truck stop, so we'll see when we go back. And we will go back. The dining area is one big linoleum floored room with a register in the corner, and a kitchen through the back. One look at the register area, and you will think, "Ohhh, I bet you $5 they sell Lion Mints or American Legion poppies" Yeah NOW you know exactly what it looks like. There are many booths, a couple of half booths (maybe for handicap accessibility?) and some separate tables. We got a booth that was well worn on the seat. Certainly a good sign. Drink orders were taken, the standard, coffee and water. The young gentleman that brought out our drinks asked if we needed anything else. E asked for cream (sugar was already on the table). This guy, just like McGuyver, pulls three creamers out of his shirt pocket! What I wanted was something of a breakfast sampler. So, on the menu, you can get three french toasts, or three hotcakes. I asked for 2 french toast and 1 hotcake, and they gladly obliged. What nice people! Side of sausage, patty or links? I chose links. The french toast was good. The hotcakes were also good. They were not fantastic, but they were not terrible either. Just a smidge above average I'd say. My breakfast came with no powdered sugar, that's fine. Single pat tubs of Country Crock and the single serving Kraft breakfast syrup. Why does this matter? If you want maple syrup or butter, they may have it, but I didn't ask. If you're looking for a fancy breakfast, keep driving. You won't find it here. No strawberry stuffed pancakes or walnut french toast here. Straight up BS breakfast (that BS is for Berkeley Springs btw). Another quick note is that they appear to make keys and sell batteries as well. It is a truck stop after all.
