2 months ago, November '20, I made my usual once a year trek to Hilo. My go to is ALWAYS Kozmic Cones and I've never been let down. Order a large Oreo Orbit, it's to the top of the cup, choke Oreo orbit. So ono...loved every bite. Get lucky and head to Hilo again, late (January 29th) this time, COMPLETELY different story. I order my Large Oreo Orbit...get attitude from the cashier after waiting 15 minutes in line. I get it, they're popular. Attitude and wait aside, the orbit I order is well below the top of the cup. Then, the amount of Oreos is decent, but they're ALL at the top and swirled in the center. Nothing at the bottom. Nothing to the sides...my guess is the blender was used once and was a quick swipe up and down for the orbit. No pride in the effort or care about the customer. I shouldn't be doing your job with a weak spoon to mix the ice cream I ordered from their store. Pretty pissed, this is the lazy lack of care I expect from Dairy Queen, NOT my Kozmic Cones....fine, whatevahs. One bad experience does not mean their quality is taking a dump. Give them a second chance(January 30), know that with the large too much ice cream and maybe a smaller size will mean everything is mixed better and they were just too busy the day before to give the usual care in the food prep. Ordered medium Orbit butterfinger and a small slush float. The slush float turned out okay, never had before so didn't know what to expect. But the butterfinger orbit was was unmixed. Couldn't see a piece of butter finger, two spoonfuls of ice cream no butter finger anywhere. Dug the spoon down and find a SMALL ball of butterfinger in the center of the Cup. Again, I'm forced to mix the ice cream I ordered as a mixed treat. AND the amount of butter fingers was even less than what should have been mixed into a small orbit. What happened to you guys?! I'm out. Two nights in a row and you can't manage to make your own treats properly. Your customer service is Shit. And the treats aren't worth the money anymore. Customer service today was awful. The Japanese male employee was rude, slammed my ice cream sundae on the counter, nuts flew out of the sundae when I asked him to put a lid on it so it wouldn't spill out when I was driving. The owner, saw this all go down, apologized for his behavior and rectified the problem by making another sundae and putting a lid on the container. The old timers held that place together....the new employees need a lesson in customer service. After all, without customers, they would have no job. read more

This review is based solely upon their desserts. We were visiting rainbow falls and on our way back I noticed this place that had a massive line wrapping around it's tiny building. I told my husband well that place must be good look at all the people! He asked if I had wanted to go and even though we just ate I figured there's always room for ice cream. Needless to say, on our 4 day trip to Hawaii island, we were there 3/4 days. Their menu is compiled of many local favorite plate lunches and desserts. I had the Oreo orbit, our Keiki had slush floats, soda floats, and one a single serving of vanilla soft serve. All of us drove away with happiness in our hands. The soft serve is so deliciously creamy. They have several different flavors of slushee (strawberry, coke, blue vanilla, and melon). My husband got the large slush float with strawberry, coke, and blue vanilla. Each time we were asked, "you want all the flavors in one cup!?" Haha! You all should name it the "Mike special". We were a bit surprised no one really requested more than one flavor in a cup for it to seem so out of this world, but it is soooo good that way. I really want to give them 4 stars, hell even 5 stars but they are lacking in certian areas that's basic fundamentals. For one, I've tried to give their hamburgers a fair shake ordering them on 3 now 4 seperate occasions. Each time they are like over cooked hockey pucks. Dont get me wrong, they have really good food, the fried chicken sandwhich I had was slightly above average. But how do you mess up a burger? I'm not sure at what point in the process there needs to be change implemented with the burgers but damn please do so. There ice cream portions are always good and generous. Service is a bit hit or miss. A lot of places on this island have horrid customer service like it's the norm. Overall I enjoy and look forward to eating here, they just need to step it up a notch on the most basic of food items and they would be a 5 star establishment all day. read more

Kosmic Cones is out of this world! Sorry for the cliche, but you know what they say; cliches are mini truths revealed! Tucked away across the street from the Hilo Public Library is this popular local joint that serves plate lunches and local grinds. There's a drive thru too. But it's the sweet treats that will have your tummy singing great praises, especially the slush freeze, which is essentially a blended slush float with a milkshake consistency. However the chili has changed over the years (in my opinion) and it's just not as good as it was when I was younger LOL. I get the Martian Meal a lot and I always get the token instead of the sundae, so I have a bunch of tokens stockpiled somewhere for free sundaes :P The bf likes their hamburger steak plate and nutty cone. Oh and note - their chicken katsu is not really traditional style chicken katsu at all... it's more "American" style (if that makes any sense :P) with a thick seasoned breading. Friend of mine highly recommended going here for ono food and was sorely disappointed with their burger and loco moco which used meat type patties which were previously frozen with fake looking grill marks on them like the ones you see in a white and yellow box in the typical supermarket frozen meal section. It's just terribly awful tasting meat. It's like some sort of synthetic meat substitute. If they are least used Banquet frozen meat hybrid patties (pork chicken beef) they'd be edible and I wouldn't complain. I really hate to waste food so I forced myself to eat them doused with a lot of salt and pepper and ketchup and shoyu. They were the absolute worst burger and loco moco I have ever tasted in my life. Even the Kandi's $1.75 - $1.99 cheap hamburgers are 1000 times better tasting. They should at least poke those frozen patties full of holes with a fork and marinate them in teriyaki sauce for at least one day prior to serving them. Don't serve them as regular burger patties. Had a macadamia nut cone, called a nutty. It was simple and good. I think it was $3.## forgot, but kinda worth it for fresh macadamia nuts. I really liked it but my husband didn't. We realized it was fresh macadamia nuts because somewhere on the island there is a crop of land growing macadamia nuts. So they were crushed fresh. The taste was fresh and nutty. When used to sweet macadamia cookies, that flavor comes to mind, but the macadamia on the cone wasn't the same. I enjoyed the fresh real flavor of the macademia and would get another one. read more

Came to this place after visiting someone at the hospital. I had the grilled chicken sandwich. Let me say that it wasn't the greatest. The grilled chicken sandwich was just a bun, ranch, a piece of lettuce, and the grilled chicken. The ranch was bland and the grilled chicken was tough. Maybe I'll try some other food next time. The fries, on the other hand, were very good. I would definitely order that with my next meal. And to top off dinner, my meal came with a sundae. Ordered a butterscotch sundae. It was decent. Great place for good food and ice cream treats. It was my common eating place when I worked in the Wainaku area. But I noticed one small change since then... I am a Hamburger Steak fan, and this was the only place where I could get it and a small drink for under $7. But a few months back, when I bit into the patty, it tasted "different", not the same from earlier times. I thought maybe my taste buds was off that day, so I ordered it again a few weeks later... but alas, I didn't enjoy it. It seems like the patty was made under a new process or obtained via a new provider. Whatever the case, I became deterred from ordering anything that contained a burger patty. Aside from that disappointment, everything else on their menu board is good, especially when Chicken Tofu is on the menu.
