I was craving kerala parrota and mutton fry.this place was almost 30 miles away from our city ,so was skeptical about it.However I am glad that I came here .Food was good ,I wish it was little bit spicier though. We tried biryani too,it was okay though.the meat was not tender as expected.But if you want to try so mutton,fish or beef fry with parrota, then may be this is worth the place. This review is for the restaurant within the supermarket. Great little place that serves good South Indian food. We tried the dosas and they were wonderful. The lady serving the food is kind and upfront- she told us how much to order without getting too much food. The dosas were fresh. The accompanying items- coconut chutney, sambar, etc were all great. We ordered fish cutlets- these did not seem to fresh and we ended up having to leave it behind. The masala chai was fantastic. The restaurant is along the side of the inside of the supermarket. It's clean and well maintained. I would recommend this place for a casual Indian food fix! read more

While I was visiting Tracy--where my girlfriend is from--we decided to check out Kovalam since she had really liked it after trying it earlier. Even though the restaurant is located inside of a grocery store, there is seating at the side of the building in front of where you order. Thankfully, it wasn't crowded when we came so we were able to find seats pretty easily here. For the food I decided to order the Chicken Chukka along with the Kerala Paratha. After taking the first bite I understood why she recommended this place, as the flavors were very forward and delicious. The spices added gave the chicken a depth of flavor, while the Paratha was super crispy and light. The chicken combined with the Paratha is also great, and the portion sizes here are pretty good as well. Appreciate the feedback and educational response from the owner. Doesn't change the fact that the food tasted the way it did. I asked for Naan and was told the other bread was similar to it, but it wasn't (regular bread versus a sweet and greasy crepe like flavor...not the same). Maybe clarification for those of us who aren't so familiar with the differences when we order. I would have respected that. You mention my assumption to the samosa. There's literally a photo of the menu from the business owner that shows "samosa" under the appetizers. That wasn't an assumption. If we need to go to a website for an updated menu, that's fine. But I kindly ask that you ask yelp to take down the outdated menus so some of us don't make a drive from a couple cities over to try out some great Indian food. You're implying that my complaint was about the different flavors I experienced, and that's not the case. The food didn't taste fresh, and you had items advertised that weren't available upon arrival. Quite a few items that weren't available, actually. That was my complaint. Don't make it into something about distinct flavors when I'm talking about freshness and item availability. Respect to your business and all of the great flavors of India. I am a Malayalee from Ernakulam and a serious home chef. My wife and I ordered 3 curries-- kadala, okhra, and fish, a prawn roast, kerala rice, kerala porotta, and string hoppers. The porotta and hoppers and rice were excellent. The kadala curry was good. The fish curry and prawns were average. The king fish was overcooked. The curries all had a certain sameness to them that detracted from the overall experience. read more

We had an incredible experience with the restaurant. For my baby shower, we ordered food for 50 people to be delivered to our home. The owner went above and beyond to ensure the food arrived hot, packing it in thermal containers to keep it warm during transport. The Kerala cuisine was outstanding, and our guests raved about the dishes. Each one was well worth the price. The owner was friendly and a pleasure to deal with. The money spent was well worth it. I highly recommend this restaurant for any event, and be sure to try their delicious, hot food served by the chef (in his restaurant, the place is clean and well maintained), it's amazing! Most underrated Indian restaurant in Bay Area. If you want to experience Authentic Kerala Cuisine and Indian groceries, this is your one stop shop. Mr Philip and Bindu do a great job with their quality and quantity of food served to your choice. The beef fry and Kerala Parotta was out of the world. It's a must try. I also had Kovalam cater for my brothers wedding. They did a phenomenal job is making sure we had enough and we didn't have to worry about anything except be ready to enjoy the meal. The paratha is so incredibly flakey and scrumptious. It has dozens of flakey layers and can be peeled later by layer and dipped into the koorma. Go here to try authentic Kerala dishes like Fish pollichathu, Crab masala, Chicken peralan, Beef Ularth, Appam, Parathas etc. Biryani was pretty good too. Parota was typical Malabar parota with layers are thin and crispy and melts in your mouth. The Chicken peralan was tender and very flavorful. Another noted thing is generous quantity. Restaurant is to go only. You have to order via phone since waiting time is 30 to 45 minutes. Little waiting time but worth to get the fresh food.
