Located in downtown Rock Hill, Kounter gives people something positive to talk about when you mention Rock Hill. It's history is based on a sit in held at a RH lunch counter. by a group of black students during segregation. Kounter honors their courage which I love . A friend invited me here for lunch and it did not disappoint. As soon as I stepped in, I immediately smelled a great aroma of Brussels that I knew I had to get! Kounter has a smaller lunch menu but it's packed with flavor from different sources so be sure to read the description carefully. We each decided to get an appetizer or salad and spilt it. We chose the Fried Ribs & Tuscan Caesar Salad. Just Wow! The ribs came 3 to a plate with a lettuce medley and sweet plantains. They weren't heavily battered and seasoned and cooked to perfection. It was nice to be able to drizzle the sauce from the ribs on the lettuce and have that along with the plantain as a compliment to the ribs. Now the Caesar salad is a presentation on its own. It comes in a large mason jar already toss and and the biggest waffle cone stuffed with chicken & salad. The waitress gave us the instructions to pour the salad on top of the cone and with the tongs crush up the waffle cone and that's what we did. The waffle cone & salad was different but it gave the salad a nice crunch that you'd normally get with croutons which I'm not a fan off so the waffle cone worked. Loved the caesar dressing used also. The salad could have easily been a meal alone. By this time we are full but our eyes were bigger than our stomachs and against our better judgement we each ordered a sandwich that we intended to spilt. I got the OG Chix Sammie & she got the Peppercorn Smoked Turkey with both a side of the Asian Brussel Sprouts. The sandwiches were huge and we were already full so we packed those to go but we most definitely had the Brussels while they were nice, hot and finger lickin good!! Some of the best Brussels I have had. We both later connected and agreed our sandwiches were good also but we didn't have to have them. Next time we know not to be so greedy lol. Anywhere I can eat and lounge that gives me an opportunity to learn a piece of history is a place I want to be. I would highly recommend! read more

Unbelievable food is really all anyone needs to know lol. The dishes are tasty and unique, and the execution on all of them is outstanding. I have had Chef Rob's food in a few different locations, and this was the best. The smoked Tuna Poke is so tasty and well balanced that I am pretty sure I could eat it every day. The lobster gnocchi was so delicious, and the lobster was cooked perfectly. I had the Ley Lime creation for dessert and it really finished off the experience well. My wife and I gave Kounter a second chance this week and have come to the realization that we do not need to go back. The service was good is about all the positive I have. Food is fair and the portions are pretty small for the price. Not sure what it is about Rock Hill but we are extremely disappointed with the dining options. read more

Had brunch today at Kounter. I like what they stand for and how they have a wall of history. Very interesting to read of the men who chose jail to stand up for their rights. About the food, it was scrumptious. I had the asparagus quiche. It was like eating a chicken pot pie LOL. The crust was great. My hubby ate the French toast prior to brunch we had the cinnamon bun and the chocolate croissant. Both were well made and tasty. Incredible brunch! I drove up from Columbia to give this place a try after a friend raved of the dinner experience. I had the cubano breakfast bowl and was honestly stunned that this place was so good! As a cuban food obsessed, Florida native, I can attest that this spot has nailed down the right seasonings and textures to sell a cuban breakfast bowl. Came in with high expectations and walked out surprised how good this place really is! Came in for a late lunch and we were seated right away. Server got our drink orders and went over the menu with some recommendations. Mixed drinks were excellent. We decided to share appetizers and eat tapas style to try several things...great choice! We had the fried ribs...oh my soooo good. Perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy and tender inside...amazing! Brussel sprouts were excellent with a glaze that complimented them. Cheese plate was gray for sharing cam with pretzel bites, goat cheese and pimento cheese, along with warm pita and toast...this place is excellent. The BF and I eat at The Kounter when we are in Rock Hill. The place is located right downtown and offers a historical, meaningful, and comfortable ambiance. The food is amazing! I had the Hot honey tofu - it was so good. I wasn't sure what to expect even as a vegetarian. It was delicious. On Saturday, my bf, a couple of friends, and I went to Kounter for my birthday. When you enter, it kind of reminds me of a 60's diner. The staff was very friendly, the atmosphere was pleasant. For drinks i ordered a pear martini and later a sparkling lavender lemonade! Both drinks were on the money!!! As in GOOD... i ordered the black wings as an appetizer. The wings were tender and the grilled pineapple, citrus and ginger ponzu was fresh. For my entree, I ordered the spaghetti O's and meatballs. This entree has an acquired taste because the lamb meatballs are very seasoned which is a good thing, there are up to 14 different mushrooms in the forest mushroom cream sauce, and you can taste the orange in the orange scented ricotta. I know it sounds like a lot, but don't knock it until you try it! My bf ordered the bacon wrapped meatloaf which was very tasteful but i wish i could have tried it with the steakhouse vinaigrette and cilantro cream.. He ordered that to be on the side... It comes with two nice round sizes which is wrapped in bacon, the swirled potatoes is favorable as well as the roasted brussels.... Our friend tried the beef cake stand sliders which were huge! And of course i had to try a piece ... it comes on a sweet bun, and you get a total of 8.... The meat was seasoned and tender, the garlic-herb cheese set it off! Decided to try a new restaurant tonight and it was... fine. That's the best way to describe it. The service was friendly and the place was busy and pretty cool but that's about it. The portions were very small for the price and didn't have the amazing flavor to make up for it. We had the chicken and waffle sushi to start and I didn't love the taste. I had the steak and potatoes and my bf had the meatloaf. The meatloaf was better than the steak for half the price. Nothing was really bad, I just wasn't blown away. Great food - eclectic menu - I expected tapas portions but these are larger! All the food was artistically served and even a featured salad under a smoke dome. The historical value of eating at a civil rights "sit- in" counter was gratifying and sobering. There are a ton of historical markers and references - they would tell the story much better than I can. This is a great chef-owned restaurant in Old Town Rock Hill, SC. I went with three adventurous-eating adults. We decided to split three shareable items, get drinks and desserts. We had the Smoking Tuna Poke, Hummus and Cheese squeeze and the Beet Down Salad. Everything was presented in fun and playful ways. The poke was presented under a dome filled with smoke. The Hummus came in a tube and the beet salad was served in a shaker and poured into a bowl. All three were delicious and a great way to try different things. My favorite was the Poke. We also had the Pear Martini, Autumn G&T and Cheerwine Sangria. All were delicious, too. My favorite was the Pear Martini. Absolutely loved our dinner experience here! We got to sit at the counter in the Friendship 9's stools and heard about the history of the building. Cocktails were delicious, and our meals were equally as fab. I got the cake stand chicken sliders, my husband got the steak and potatoes, and for dessert we got the key lime. I don't usually give 5 stars but I really think this p,lace deserved it. The menu is unusual and taste great.We had the smoked poke and I had the lobster gnocchi while my husband had the lamb meatballs. I was not a fan of the lamb as I think it just had to much going on, but everything slide was great. The cocktail is the best I have had in a long time. We had a reservation and our table was ready when we arrived. Have a delightful waitress(wish I could remember her name) and everything including the price was great. Things were priced fairly so as to allow you to come again soon and not feel robbed. We sat at a high top and next time might try the tables or counter. The only think I would say I did not like was it was super loud. Like nothing to absorb the chatter and sometimes it was so loud we could not hear one another. Not sure if the high tops added to that but something to cut down the chatter would help. But bravo on the originally of the menu. Oh and the portions were good. Could have used a few more pieces of Tuna in the poke, but it was still good. read more

Kounter's offerings look decent on paper but lack follow-through. They excel at fried finger foods. The meat eaters in our group were happy with the fried ribs and fried chicken sliders. Their hummus/cheese plate was pretty and tasted fine, but wasn't anything special. The lobster gnocchi sauce was too thick and bland. Also, the gnocchi dumplings were a little too dense and chewy. DO NOT ORDER THE BANANAS FOSTER... It's just gross. There is no ice cream or caramel sauce. The bananas are mush and have no flavor. It's served in a taco format with a greasy fried bread wrapper. The CHOCOLATE and PEANUT BUTTER PIES were well executed and the highlight of the meal. I will not return or recommend this restaurant. I'm not sure what better options are available in Rock Hill, but Charlotte has some decent restaurants that are worth the drive. read more

We had amazing service and delicious food in a safe environment. The smoked tuna appetizer had a great presentation and was so tasty. It was Smokey, sweet and crunchy! I had the Thai shrimp tacos and it was so different than any other tacos I ever had. The shell was made of a fried pancake-like food. Then it was filled with sweetened plantains and spicy shrimp. I would never think to put those foods together but it was delectable! My husband has the beef sliders and they were huge. It was burger meat topped with pulled pork and some soft cheese. I tried some and it was incredible! They hand slammed fries had a sweet and spicy sauce in top which made them enjoyable. The roasted Brussels sprouts were just okay. However, they are Brussels sprouts, so I don't feel like I expect much! Lol read more

This new restaurant is definitely trying to bring something new and creative to Rock Hill. After reading good reviews, I was very underwhelmed. The tables were all seated extremely close to each other. So close in fact, we thought there was a party of 15, but at closer examination it was a bunch of individual tables just seated very close together. Next, our service was a little slow. We were sat and took over 10 minutes to be greeted. We all ordered different drinks and only really cared for one- the pink lady. One in our party ordered the mango peppercorn drink and it was so syrupy sweet he didn't finish. All our food was good, but nothing exceptional. We all said we would try this place again at a different dining time to see if it's a different atmosphere/experience at dinner. read more
