Koukash Bar & Restaurant is the main restaurant serving the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel and Spa in Liverpool, I called here after spending a night in a hotel which I did find to be quite impressive, with the hotel breakfast being served here, it is easy to get into Koukash from the hotel down a couple of steps or quite a slow, awkward lift to take you down the steps.
Starting with the overall feel of Koukash, it was quite small and the overall feel and ambience was just strange, it didn't feel like a traditional hotel breakfast area, it just felt like a morbid cafe, there didn't even appear to be a large number of tables or even staff circulating ready to help you and take any orders for extras such as omelettes or poached eggs, in fact I wasn't even told ordering extras was possible until I luckily was able to catch a chef coming out of the kitchen to put more food out.
As mentioned, the service here was nothing less than awful, from ordering gluten free toast and a hot beverage at being seated, I never saw a staff member again other than the chef.
I wish I could say the food quality was better however it was not - alongside the minimal breakfast selection which even was shown with having only one drink on tap (orange juice) and the rest in jugs and even the lack of signs to show what else you can order, or even a place where you can order extras.
I also did have an issue with the scrambled egg, when I went to get some from the breakfast buffet it looked disgusting, only to find out it contained tomato and spinach which to me sounded like a disgusting combination, on asking for some fresh scrambled eggs made without these, I was given a horrible, dry, domestic mess, the scrambled eggs were not only unseasoned but they were so dry not even all the salt and pepper in the world could make them edible, which was a real shame too considering I've had some of the best-scrambled eggs of my life at Hilton buffet breakfasts at other Hilton hotels such as Hilton Manchester Deansgate and Hilton London Green Park.
I hoped the scrambled eggs was the only egg dish that wasn't egg-cellent, but once again my hopes and dreams were smashed, like Liverpool's dreams of lifting the Premier League were smashed when Gerrard slipped and gave the ball to Demba Ba.
I found my poached eggs to be too watery and runny, the fried eggs were also cut strangely and mediocre, which brings me to the worst out of the lot - the omelette.
I found my omelette to also be disgusting in its' own right, not only was it serve looking like it's just come out of a large animals outside, it had a horrible strong smell of cheese and oil (despite asking for less food), the smell got so bad with the thick, greasy layer of cheese on the middle, I couldn't even bring myself to eat it.
Koukash certainly didn't live up to the high expectations of the rest of the hotel, and at £18 per head walk-in or £12 per guest when booking with a room at the front guest, you expect high quality, so sadly Koukash deserves a single one-star as from food quality to service, it was a complete and utter let-down. read more
