When you "Google" or "Yelp" a restaurant in the small town of Chester, California, what restaurant comes to mind? Kopper Kettle Cafe, of course, as they're the best-known restaurant in town. As I was passing through town, I just HAD to pay a visit to Kopper Kettle Cafe, so as a dedicated "foodie," webmaster, photographer and "Yelper," I could see what Kopper Kettle is all about... As you walk in, you're greeted with a great counter, and a friendly staff member who will invite you to sit anywhere you choose when the restaurant is lightly seated. I arrived later than the rest of my party, who were already comfortably seated on the inviting outside patio. The dining room is rustic, cozy, and is in keeping with the small-town atmosphere that Chester has to offer. If you look around the corner from the main dining room, you can see the 100+ gallon aquarium which is pretty impressive. Now I know why the fish served at this wonderful restaurant is so fresh! The breakfast menu features all of your favorites, and covers all bases for breakfast lovers. Note that Kopper Kettle Cafe is serious about breakfast, as breakfast is served anytime the restaurant is open. The lunch menu has all of your favorites, including burgers. I was torn between a burger, or a chicken fried steak, but the steak won out. From the "Breakfast Traditions" menu - breakfast is served anytime the restaurant is open - my friend Dan and I ordered the "Chicken Fried Steak with Country Gravy, and Two Eggs." The breakfast comes with a choice of hash browns or country potatoes, several varieties of toast, or a biscuit, and after Dan ordered his breakfast, I said, "I'll take the same." We really decided to up the ante by ordering an optional bowl of country gravy on the side. The main feature of the meal, the chicken fried steak, was just the right size - about 6 ounces - and was tender, juicy, and melted in your mouth. You didn't need a knife to cut it, as it was so tender that you could cut a little piece of it off with your fork, pop it into your mouth, and enjoy all of the flavorful goodness. The batter to meat ratio was perfect, and the batter was crispy fried, delicious, and not at all greasy. Both the batter and the meat were seasoned just right, and one bite of this delicious chicken fried steak instantly transported me to Texas. If you've ever been to Texas, you'll know what a real chicken fried steak is all about... The menu offers a choice between hash browns or country potatoes, and we went with country potatoes. The potatoes were diced to just the right size, fried to a golden brown on the outside, tender white on the inside, and included diced bell pepper and onions. Delicious! The benchmark of a good breakfast chef is when you order your fried eggs over easy, they arrive that way, not runny nor hard. The eggs were fried perfectly over easy, as ordered, with is a tribute to the skill of the chef. You can choose from all the common varieties of toast, or order a biscuit, but since the chicken fried steak was covered with gravy, we went with a freshly baked, delicious biscuit, as that seemed like the way to go. Speaking of the gravy... the steak was covered with gravy, but Dan and I both ordered a bowl of the gravy on the side, with no regrets, and the gravy was FANTASTIC! Yes, both the gravy on the steak, and the side of gravy with thick, creamy, flavorful, with lots of sausage chunks. Honestly, the gravy was so delicious, and so hearty, that you could order a side of hash browns, cover it with a bowl of gravy, and that would be a perfect breakfast. Kopper Kettle Cafe serves American "diner cuisine," for your dining pleasure, but that's what you're looking for, when you're visiting Chester, right? Stopped in for lunch and could automatically tell they were under new management. We ordered our lunch and none of us were asked how we wanted our burgers cooked. They came out well well done, like hockey pucks, and our sever never came back to check on us. Food was gross, service was mediocre at best, atmosphere was very unpleasant, the amount of flies in the establishment was overbearing, and the only good thing was the beer was cold... such a disappointment compared to the previous owners. I ordered Fried chicken. The Breast was frozen in the center. Although it was not raw. Meaning it was cooked and frozen before adding breading. The waitress said she would microwave it. I said no do not microwave it. She returned 5 minutes later with the same plate she took away. They took the chicken breast I had bitten into and put back into the fryer. Now it was hot. Cooked. And taste like grease. Another one of my guest had the Homemade Meat loaf. Was Microwave HOT. And mushy. The gravy had a bad taste. She took 1 bite. But did not say anything until I complained about my refried chicken Waitress just looked at her and walked away. A gentleman brought our check and After looking at it and commented he should discount it. He said would have too talk to his supervisor. Well I meet the owner He apologized and deducted $30 off the bill. My wife's Breakfast Hash was very over cooked and dried out. But she was hungry and ate it. This was once the one of the best restaurants in Chester, sadly, it is no more. Had been going there for over 20 years. Sadly, it is average or below at best. The food was cold, the service was slow and to get our bill we had to walk to the counter. If you want microwave food, then this is the place. We won't be back and I say that very sadly. read more

Our server "Sonya" was AWESOME with her service. Hubby ordered the chili burger and I ordered the french dip. I was craving garlic fries and Sonya recommended the fries were delish. O M G, sonya was right. The french dip was SO GOOD. Hubby requested from another server (blond woman) xtra onions and not even 2 minutes later the blond server completely forgot our request. I stopped Sonya and asked for xtra onions and not even 10 seconds Sonya came out with them. She even joked that hubby has to eat every bit of the onion. Hubby just scraped off every piece of the onions and grinned at Sonya. She told us she was joking. We told her hubby LOVES onions. Sonya has that friendly personality with the customers which makes up for any negative experience (if any). I tried hubby's chili burger. I'm not a chili person but their chili was AWESOME. Walk in and seat yourselves for breakfast. Big Biscuits are more like bread. The oil the potatoes were cooked in was slightly rancid but both potatoe sides were cooked perfectly crispy. My eggs were cooked just right. The all meat omelet was good. Big portions here. The sausages were big fat and delicious. Service was friendly and fast considering there was only one waitress. My husband and I stopped to eat dinner here after our drive up to Lassen National Park. The blonde hostess/ only server in the restaurant, at the time we were there, was wonderful and attentive. I was very impressed at how she was able to serve every table and still hold a conversation with a loquacious patron. I had pork chops with mashed potatoes and brown gravy. One of the few places we could dine in while we visited Chester. A nice mom and pop style restaurant that has excellent homestyle cooking and a welcoming atmosphere. We started off with breakfast, which was eggs benedict. A delicious egg, hollandaise sauce, and biscuit mix with a side of hash browns. The plate was so big, it was enough to feed me and my fiance. We later went back for lunch the same day. I had the bacon bleu cheese burger which was yummy as well. It was a giant burger, too, which is good for when you share meals. Loved this place. My fiance and I had gone to Chester, Ca for a memorial. When we were lookong fornplaces to eat we saw this place. We had the Eggs Benedict's woth hashbrowns and it was great. We only had to order one and split it since the portions are go big. We later went there again for lunch (yes, this place is that good) and I had my first Monte Cristo accompanied with fries. This is the forst Monte Cristo I've ever had so I may not be a good judge,but I liked it. It is a little dry, but when you add the raspberry jam it was left a different taste and texture. We have gone to this restaurant many years times over the years. When we wanted to take a scenic drive and have always enjoyed the food and the warm and friendly owner. Since the Dixie Fire snd the sadness of the burnt forest we haven't been gone there in a while. Apparently it is under ownership. The food was good and the staff was okay. It was cold in there. We are looking out the window at berms of snow placed there by the snow plows. I hate eating with my coat on. There is no character. A few floral pictures. Could definitely use a paint job. I visited recently with my wife. The word was out that they had sushi now and thats a favorite of mine, so had to give it a try. The place was crowded, which wasnt a surprise as past visits had shown me the food is good and its one of the most consistent places in town. The food was good. My wife had a burger and fries, while I had the sushi. 1 roll deep fried, and one not. The deep fried, I wouldnt repeat as its breaded as opposed to tempura like I normally see but overall, good. The worst part was the service and the attitude. I encountered 4 employees and not a smile or a kind word from any of them. Unfriendliness is one thing, but being ignored or forgotten about is something else entirely. Our waitress asked if my wife wanted a refill and never came back with it. I asked another server for soy sauce and she without a word, walked off and placed a bottle on the table behind me, who were still reading the menu. After a long day of driving we came here to eat breakfast. There is a lot of seating within the cafe, but we chose to sit outside. The weather was too nice to be inside that day. Nice country cafe - and rated accordingly - well until later in our experience. My wife got the BLT and I got the egg salad sandwich that earned a frown for my wife. I had written out a more positive review based on early experience but after about 1/2 hour, another waitress (not the original) came out to tell us they lost our ticket. If we had been in our normal busy schedule, we would have left on the note to find another place to eat. The first order came out 10 minutes later and the next order another 10 minutes. My wife and I had dinner here tonight. We both had the "poke bowl". (The style of serving here is in an "o-bento" tray.) We found nothing to complain about. The ingredients were fresh, the rice was good quality Japanese rice, the quantities were generous. The quality of the fish was appropriate to the price. As for the service, it was just fine. The server came and took our order, brought us our food in a little while, and accommodated our special requests (chopsticks, soy sauce, wasabi). What else is there to say? I was sorry to read that other Yelpers felt they had a bad experience, but our experience was good. We were pleased to find quality Japanese food in a small town like Chester. We were impressed to see a hardworking family keeping their restaurant open seven days a week, and until 9 o'clock at tbat. I would encourage you give this place a try. read more

This place is great. I have been coming here for about 32 years, yes, since I was a kid, and I've always had a good experience. The current owner is very kind and attentive and the service was over the top positive. The check came to me very early but this is something I actually prefer. The coffee is pretty darn good and the food was exceptional. I love that they opened at 6am, at least today they did, because every other spot opens at 7am or later and I needed a cozy spot to relax and eat. Driving from Reno to Redding on a scenic drive. This is real home cooked food. The food was really good. The bacon was large and I had like 5 pieces. The biscuits were AMAZing!! Home made. Thick. This is one fine restaurant. There wasn't much of a selection in town so we stopped here for supper. There is a big menu with lots of selection - I had the pork chop (one for seniors) and it came with apple sauce, baked potato, vegetables, salad. The little lady had the turkey. Fair prices and nice quantities. Service was good. However I do have some criticisms - why is the only premium beer Corona - heck Sierra NevadaBrewery is just an hour away and Bud and Ethel could probably handle something fancier than a Coors Light. Also, the food has no spice on it - you think Bud and Ethel gonna be scared off by a little paprika and seasoning. I used to really enjoy the Kopper Kettle. During the winter they are always open. This is going back 20 years. Currently I'm concerned for food safety. My bacon was raw on my recent trip and all other orders were gross, which is a new experience for us. . The business seems to of been recently sold or under new management. There was a child running about from the eating area to the kitchen and others not involved with food prep coming in and out of kitchen chewing food. I'm not sure what has happened. With barely any other restaurants in town it seems pretty easy to keep this going for another 20 years. Would I ever eat sushi from a place like this, never. Restaurants are not for child care either. Try not to screw up the business further. read more

YUM!!!! I was a little hesitant to come given that I usually go with reviews on here. But I'm so glad I came. First off, everyone is super friendly. My server was adorable. Super nice and bubbly. Second, ORDER THE RIBEYE!!! I like my meat medium well. I think no matter how you like it you will enjoy it. It was juicy, flavorful, and done perfectly. Third, the servings are huge and the prices are great for what you get. And finally: SAVE ROOM FOR DESSERT!!! I ordered the chocolate cake not knowing it would be a colossal mountain of chocolate. The food was good. The waitress was very nice but she was alone and got a group of 8, that of course took her attention. There was a "dish boy" that did a wonderful job of helping her out. However my Mom ordered a Cobb salad that specifically stated chicken and when my mom tasted it, it was Pork. Luckily we don't have any religious restrictions in eating pork. When we finally got the waitress she took it back to the owner. The owner said that it was chicken and refused to give any discount. The discount isn't what my parents were looking for, but the fact that the owner basically called my mom, dad and husband ( who all tried the "chicken" and said it was pork) liars. Stopped by this cafe for breakfast after a weekend of camping and we were extremely impressed!!! Coffee was very light, which isn't everyone's favorite, but it made it easy to drink multiple cups and not feel guilty. I ordered a standard breakfast with eggs, bacon, hash browns, and a pancake. The eggs were cooked through, bacon was crispy and came as 4 slices, hash browns were greasy but in the best way, and the pancake was crisp on the outside yet fluffy in the inside. The highlight of breakfast by-far was the cinnamon roll though. ABSOLUTELY MASSIVE!!! It was warm, covered with icing, and served with some butter on the side. Despite the size, it was perfectly soft and cooked through without being burnt on top. I would be willing to drive the hour and a half from Chico just to eat this cinnamon roll. Service was quick and friendly, environment was comforting and cozy. We are definitely making this place a tradition!! read more
