A small, quiet, and decidedly old-school Thai restaurant that doesn't disappoint. Older owner waiting the tables, soft instrumental music in the background, faded posters and Thai bric-a-brac . . . just all the signs of a good, solid, yet humble dining experience. They are known for their pho as well as their actual Thai dishes and I got the pho ga and it was very good. No frills, nothing updated it seems much since maybe the 1990s, a large menu (which I'm wary of most places but not atypical for Thai restaurants) and for lunch my pho was even served with a side of a Thai soup which rivaled the pho in taste and a very good spring roll. Learned about this place on Yelp. Absolutely some of the best Thai food I've had. We stopped for lunch and it was virtually empty inside. I don't get it! Clean as a button in there, fast and kind service and delicious food. Maybe we just got lucky. The Thai tea is out of this world good. Good enough to be considered dessert. Which is why I suspect you find it in the dessert section of the menu. In this instance, completely warranted. For appetizers we had the fried dumplings which were filled with marinated ground chicken, carrots, water chestnuts and onion and served with a sweet soy sauce. So darn good! We also had spring rolls with our lunch specials. Amazing! Made fresh, not frozen and you can tell the difference. Our entrees were incredibly flavorful. The Pad Gra Pow was so fresh and chock full of veggies. The sesame chicken was fried perfectly and not tough at all. The sauce wasn't overly sweet either. Both very good representations of the dish. Stopped by for lunch and glad we went here. We ordered seafood Pad Thai and beef Pho. While waiting, they served us complimentary chicken & rice soup and a spring roll on the side, which was a surprise and appreciated. The entrees were both on point and the portions were plenty. The owners were very friendly and took care of us really well. The inside is very clean and so were the restrooms. We will definitely come here again when we're near Statesville. The night started with excellent service and it got better from there. Our order was out in no time. We couldn't believe it got there so fast. We had Red Curry and chicken and Pad Thai with chicken the food was delicious. For the dessert we had Sticky Rice and Mango with it drenched in Coconut Sauce. Koong Thai was very clean. Service was just OK. We had three in our party. We ordered: Tom aka Soup, Pad Thai, Masaman Curry and Red Curry stir fry. The Red Curry stir fry was low heat even after it was asked that it be spicy. The Pad Thai was very dark and a gelatinous ball. The soup was the best offering. I had lunch yesterday and ordered Pad Thai. It arrived with no peanuts. I asked the waitress if it had peanuts and she said yes it did. After a few more bites I told her again, there are no peanuts. She then brought me some in a little bowl and said they "forgot" to put them on. How can you forget peanuts in Pad Thai? The restaurant was not crowded. I asked to speak to the manager and she told me he was in the back but she would tell him. So, an item forgotten and then misinformation. A friend told me about Koong Thai, so I came to give it a try. Glad I did! What an awesome new restaurant for the Statesville scene! I had some old favorites from when I lived in Asia (tom kha and pad see yew), and they were EXCELLENT. The service was great. The restaurant is spacious and clean.
