Went for lunch here yesterday with hubby as we were near the area (declared a non working day for us!). Wasn't crowded - most likely because winter storm was brewing. Loved the food. Bit pricey, but food was really good. Lunch menu is reasonably priced, but I wanted something else. For the past few weeks, I was on a hunt for a good tempura and I've been to 3 places the past 2 weeks, and they didn't turn out good. The batter from the other places were the panko type, not the batter used for tempura. Kooma's was the real deal. They were well cooked..not hard or over cooked. Had sashimi for appetizer (just me), and they were fresh. Hubby had the seafood udon - huge bowl..yet he devoured all of it. Was really good and seafood was plenty. Had the shrimp spicy udon noodles (forgot the name), although, it wasn't really spicy for me (I have a high tolerance for spicy food) but the sauce was divine and the noodles were the right firmness - not sure if I should call it al dente :) - ok, I had 3 types of food! Took a take out for my kids, the noodles, and they loved it. It was spicy for them tho :) Parking here is difficult, we were just lucky (again,maybe because of the storm) but still will definitely return with my children. Will just make sure not to go during peak time. I know they will love the food. Lots of choices! Next time, we will try the Korean dishes. Service was great too! Liked our server very attentive. I think for a petite person, he was a bit surprised with the amount of food I was taking (and beer, hahaha)...and then I had to order a take out :) If my kids didn't call that they were being sent home early due to power failure, I would have tried more dishes! I just hope they can add a Japanese crepe dessert in their dessert menu (hint,hint, Kooma!) Again, pricey, but with the quality of food (and amount), I'm good with it. We go here on a weekly basis (sometimes twice!) The food is excellent and the staff are friendly and accommodating. It is a fun atmosphere with plenty of delicious options. We have tried several rolls and really favor the Wilmington but you can't go wrong with any of them. I would recommend trying the Soju if you are into Sake-like drinks! read more

The sushi here is always amazing! The 007 roll and spicy caterpillar roll is absolutely delicious. The wait staff is always attentive and quick to refill your drinks. if you have room for desert, try the Mochi ice cream. You be glad you saved room for desert after eating it. read more

Probably the worst experience I've had at a restaurant in my life, no joke. Came on a Saturday night and my friend and I walked in and immediately noticed a weird smell, honestly like bad fish. We heard such good things we decided to stay and try it. It wasn't crowded and it was super loud and hard to hear. The decor was tacky and it took over 10 min to be greeted, sat and over 20 min before we even got water. No one ever apologized and after waiting so long for someone to take our order we went over to the bar to pay for our drinks and we saw our waitress standing at the counter just talking another server. When we said we had to leave bc it was taking too long there was no apology or anything. And I'm pretty sure there was no manager anywhere to be found. I am also a server and so it takes a really bad experience for me to write a bad review bc I know everyone has a bad night and sometimes things can get really busy so usually I'm understanding, but this was plain laziness and we were treated rudely. We were so in the mood for sushi so we ended up going to tsunami down the street and it was amazing, such a difference! read more

Kooma is known for its poor service. Tonight's experience was no exception. We saw our server 3 times, for a 4 person $175 bill. Our drinks, including water were empty. We constantly had to ask where our drinks were or if our food was coming out. Absolutely pathetic. I've been to Kooma many times since they were on gay street. I will not go back. The moment I walked into kooma I thought that I would have a great meal. The atmosphere was awesome, but extremely loud. I was with 4 other people, but I struggled to hear them if they weren't shouting. The child we were with started crying because he couldn't hear anything. Then the food came... It was awful I ordered two items the spicy chicken wraps and the chicken fried rice. Both items could have been good, but they added far too many onions/ mushrooms/ vegetables. It seems like they were trying to make these items unusual, but I found that their attempts fell short. I give it a two star because of the great atmosphere and its potential to be great. read more

Been going to Kooma for years, great quality sushi. Bring your wallet though, it can get very expensive! For two people for sushi and drinks, you aren't walking out of there without spending at least $100+. We save Kooma nights for special occasions. Ali roll is the best! read more

walk around with my friend, nice and fancy looking from outside. then we decide to have a dinner. foods run out fast and service is ok. we order the starter of rock shrimp and edamame, both of them are good. the 2 orders of tuna sashimi and 4 salmon sushi come togather with other 3 special rolls. they fast, but what i try to say is the sushi chefs dont have much knowadge of serving the sushi experience. as we only have 2 persons, should we have sushi first? we have to eat fast before the special rolls go dry. the quality of the fish are medicore. but the drink we order are fantastic. we will come back try the kitchen dishes, but not sushi there. read more

Loveee the food I always get chicken teriyaki and sweet potato fries and its so good!! However, the service is really sub par. The waitresses I have gotten when going there seem to disappear often when you need drink refills and can be rude and VERY SLOW, which is understandable during a busy dinner time but it is always pretty empty during lunch time and sometimes we could see our food ready on the counter but our waitress was no where to be found to deliver it. I also had and experience of one chase us out on the street one time when I was with a group of friends (separate bills) and ONE girl "didn't tip enough". I understand they make their money from tips but I mean come on if we were getting terrible service and one girl out of the group didn't tip enough does that really warrant chasing us on the street. We only went to Kooma one time. The experience was okay. I think there are better sushi places. We did not like the new age décor and the music was loud. The service was very slow. I was a fan of the old Kooma on Gay Street and wish I could say the same for the new location on Church Street. The dine-in experience is awful. Although the food is decent, the wait staff is far from attentive and give the vibe that you are a burden. Tonight was the third time calling for take-out, and was the third time I waited on hold for more than ten minutes to place an order and ended up hanging up because no one came back to answer. There is no organization of the staff duties, and it definitely shows. I wish I could give Kooma my business, but I will be taking it elsewhere from now on. read more

Went there for lunch with hubby the other day. Inside it's really nice with great ambient lighting. Food was a little pricey though. Both of us enjoyed the salad. Sushi was good. Hubby had Stonepot Bibimbap which he loved. I had Tempura Noodles which were ok. Oh, and their Lychee Martini was very strong, didn't taste much else which I found disappointing. read more

I'm writing this strictly as a review of the bar. One of my favorite places to get a drink in town. If you're looking for a more 'upscale' bar away from college students this a great place to come. I went to kooma with a group of friends last week for my birthday. My server was excellent, always refilling my drinks and getting anything I needed with a smile on his face. we ordered a bunch of sushi rolls which were all excellent and high quality. And we ordered a stone pot bibimbab. I highly recommend it if you've never tried it!! Our server was kind enough to split all our checks up and was very kind to us. Overall great experience!!!!! We were a party of 3 on Saturday March 3rd. The hostess could not find our reservation & after a brief & awkward wait, she gave us a table. Our server (I will spare his name) was friendly but immediately informed us that the drink bar & sushi bar were "backed up". We ordered a bottled beer & martini immediately so they could get started. I have NEVER experienced this before, but we did not get our drinks until we finished our appetizers. I thought our server should have gotten the manager involved at this point but instead he just avoided our table. Sushi came out in a timely manner, but our 1 entree dish didn't come out until the rest of us were almost done our dinner. Again, the server should have come to the table to check on us and should have noticed that all of our food was not on the table & addressed it. Part of a server's job is timing and communicating with the customers. Needless to say we couldn't even consider ordering a 2nd drink & our server never asked, nor did he ask if we wanted dessert. Bottom line: food was quite good, but the service was so poor that it made it a bad experience. there are too many other choices within the same driving distance that provide an overall better choice. read more
