Went on a weekday dinner, no wait for a table. Found a new go-to spot! The sushi was fresh and flavorful. The service was so so friendly and fast. Friendly ambiance. All other parties there looked really happy too. Still dreaming about the eggplant dengaku. I want to try everything here!

The spoonful of happiness is amazing. Came here on a whim and just wanted to sample a few items. We ordered the spoon full of happiness, amaebi, and hamachi toro. Service was quick and server was friendly. This restaurant seems family friendly too as there were tables with families and little kids. Atmosphere seems like a blend between casual and fancy? Overall, the nigiri were fine and the seafood was fresh. Didn't feel very "wow'd" but it was good. I did notice the pieces were smaller than other establishments I've been to and the prices are a bit higher here too. The star is definitely the spoonful of happiness. The sake pairing was smooth, refreshing, and delightful. My wish is that they will have happy hour one day.

4.5* I think I may have found my regular go-to sushi place based on convenience and balance of quality to price! The $30 sushi combo is always very satisfying --a variety of 5 nirigi + the California roll that comes with it is substantial and tasty (wish there was less Mayo but I'm in the minority on Mayo) + the wakame salad has a good "crunch" texture to it + miso soup! The amaebi nigiri $12 was decent, the shrimp heads had good crunch. The hotategai nigiri $9 was delicious! Compared to Amami SF, the quality here is bit better though you get less sushi for the same price. It works out though because with delivery fees from Amani the price evens out. (It was the last straw when Ubereats delivered me fast food instead and refused to refund or replace.) If dining in, ambiance is also classy at Koo vs hole in the wall. *Their online ordering system from their website did not work for me. I was charged but Koo said they did not receive the order. Call in for take out.

We walked into the restaurant being super hungry. So, we ordered Godzilla tofu, salmon w/avo, Kumamoto oysters, spoonfuls of happiness, Aztec, green tea, black cod, baked scallop, steamed rice. My favorite bites were the spoonfuls of happiness! They seriously made me happy. The rich, luxurious bite of the Uni with the raw quail egg just involves joy! I would eat 5 more spoonfuls of that if I could afford it. Every thing else that we ate was unmemorable and lacked true flavor unless the flavor was just salt. My group was not impressed, but I'm still glad that I tried the spoonful of happiness.

Was literally craving for their spoonful of happiness and man it did not disappoint! Had to get the sweet shrimp and one of their specials while I was at it! Service was nice and quick and we beat the rush so we didn't have to wait long!

Koo is located on the bustling streets of Irving & 5th Ave in the Inner Sunset. I've been here a handful of times with friends and we always get the same thing - the Koo omakase. There is street parking here and the N(?) muni stop is right across the street. Service here is good, as the wait staff is always checking in and the sushi chefs are fun to interact with. The Koo omakase menu includes a starter from the chef, Spoonful of Happiness, goma ae, assorted sashimi, miso soup, and nigiri. The thing we always look forward to is the Spoonful of Happiness - it's quail egg w/ uni and monkfish liver. It's soo good. I think the goma ae dish was spinach w/ sesame sauce for us. The assorted sashimi was amberjack, tuna, and scallop. My favorite nigiris are the red eye snapper, king mackerel, hamachi toro, and bluefin toro as part of the omakase menu. The chef surprised us with a couple dishes including fried cod and a fried shiso leaf w/ spicy salmon and avocado and they were both so delish! I wish it was on the menu. At the end of your meal, if he asks if you want his spiciest roll - don't do it! unless you're up for the challenge... but be warned, this is like Thai spicy! Always a great experience coming here when I'm at the sushi bar. I would say Koo is one of the best bang for your buck omakase (~$100 but not 100% sure cause my bf pays haha) and reminds me closest to Japan sometimes. Check out my Tiktok/IG on it - demandyingfood :)

Nigiri and the happy hour hand rolls
Melissa H.

3.5 stars, rounding up to be generous. Food was good but nothing special. Hand rolls pictured are part of happy hour. $7 each and pretty good and big! The nigiri were not part of happy hour. Quality was great but slices felt thin. Overall quality of everything we got was good but something was missing for me. TLDR; Came here for happy hour to save money but I have realized that happy hour anywhere rarely ever saves money lol, especially at a sushi spot and you have a larger than average appetite

Cidney L.

Came here for the first time for dinner and it's a a pretty standard sushi restaurant. Would come here for the happy hour menu if I were to come back. Not too fancy, not too casual. The shrimp tempura are smaller than I anticipated.

Cane here for my cousins bday and we all had a blast. Food is fresh and delicious . Service is awesome and fast. I definitely recommend this place if haven't tried. They been here for years even before pandemic. It's a yummy hidden gem. My favorite was the spoon of happiness since it comes with a shot of sake. Happy Face. Overall we all had fun and loved the place.

The ambiance was really nice outdoors, nice lighting and cute for a summer night. Every dish felt intentional and was executed well both presentation and taste, it's a great way to try different dishes all at once, and I will definitely be back to try more à la carte items. My favorite was the sashimi, katsu, and hojicha panna cotta. The cocktails (Ichigo and some other one) were not as memorable, although the option sake pairing looked interesting for those who enjoy! Service was also impeccable, they even served us complimentary sparkling wine for our special day! :) I would say this is semi formal vibe, and 100% need reservations on weekend.

Not a big deal since it was great inside too but something to note if you're really looking forward to one or the other. Servers seemed like they had a lot on their hands and were trying to get through the orders and tables. I would say service for a restaurant of this caliber was good, but could be better? Food was great. Huge fan of the black cod (favorite), sashimi, and the minced chicken skewers. For the entree options between the chicken and amberjack katsu I'd go for the chicken. The fish katsu can be really overpowering and heavy but maybe that's just me. The katsu breading is done really well and it made for a great entree. I loved the thought put into each dish and how each dish was crafted with accompaniments like cabbage / cucumbers / hot mustard that really enhanced the main protein. We also tried sake and cocktails - I couldn't tell from their website or Yelp that they have a cocktail menu but they do! I was really happy with my yuzu chu hai, it was so refreshing and went great with the courses as a palate cleanser too.

The place fills up around 6pm so arriving ahead of that will save you a wait. They don't take reservations, so first come first served. The ordering experience is really smooth. They won't let you place a new order until your previous one has been delivered, which honestly is a smart system and helps with pacing so you don't over order right out of the gate. What sets this place apart from other AYCE spots is the variety. It's not just sushi. You can also order appetizers, salmon, teriyaki chicken and more, so there's something for people who want to mix it up beyond rolls. Delicious, easy, affordable and in the neighborhood. Overall, the quantity of food made it feel like a very reasonable value for high-end dining in San Francisco, and I would definitely return. The Courses & Food - Edamame Surinagashi (Silky Edamame Dashi soup with deep-sea red crab and caviar): Unfortunately, this first soup was a bit of a miss for me. It felt bland and needed salt; I was hoping the caviar would bring a pop of saltiness, but I couldn't taste it. - Otsumami (Seven kinds of seasonal Japanese appetizers): Served on a beautiful tray that I wished I could take home! Highlights included a squid dish in a savory black soup liquid that was so delicious I drank every last drop. The egg roll avocado bite was also fantastic--warm, crisp, and savory. However, the wagyu piece on the tray was quite dry, and while everyone else enjoyed their toro, mine came out noticeably stringy. - Four kinds of Sushi: These nigiri courses were phenomenal--even as someone who isn't a huge fan of wasabi, I devoured every piece. Highlights like the toro, eel, and amberjack were all outstanding. - Wanmono "Hamo Shinjo Soup" (Delicate Japanese pike eel "Hamo" dumpling in clear umami dashi soup): The fish cake dumpling soup had good flavor, though by this point I was starting to get full and couldn't finish the broth. - Four kinds of Sushi: Continued the streak of incredible nigiri bites. Mains Choice (A5 Oita Wagyu vs. Mehikari Kara-age): We split the two options across our party. The Mehikari Kara-age (shiny green-eyed fish fried crispy) was about 6 inches long, similar to a large sardine, but very meaty. It was battered and fried to absolute perfection--light, crispy, and paired with an amazing seasoning salt. WOW. - The A5 Oita Wagyu blew the previous wagyu appetizer completely out of the water. Both mains were on the smaller side, but given the total volume across 18 courses, we left completely full. - Four kinds of Sushi: The final sushi round was incredible. Surprisingly, my favorite bite wasn't a standard fish maki, but the uni--and I don't even normally like uni! Miso Soup & Sweets: A solid, comforting end to the meal. Service & Experience The staff was warm, welcoming, and polite throughout the evening. However, there were a few minor operational hiccups for a restaurant of this caliber: champagne was initially served in the wrong glassware, and a couple of dishes were placed on the table oriented backward. More noticeably, one of our main courses was delayed by about 10 minutes after everyone else's arrived, leaving our table in an awkward spot wondering whether to start eating or wait. Despite those small missteps, the service was genuinely friendly, the food was extremely generous for 18 courses at $210, and we had a great overall evening.

Started off with their ceviche with local halibut in a tom kha, a spicy and citrus-y sauce. The nori rice cracker was tasty by itself but its crevices weren't the most conducive to holding the fish pieces. The uni amaebi donburi was packed with fresh ikura, uni, and shrimp. I felt that the Korean seaweed wasn't the most appropriate since its inherent salt kinda overpowered the fresh umaminess of the seafood. The shoji burger came with a well-seasoned patty and American cheese, but is served with a 3 cheese fondue skillet. It was tasty because of the gooey cheese. Even with the most coordination and dexterity, it was logistically challenging to eat the burger (especially since they do not serve it with knives) as well as the ceviche/donburi, so I would recommend reconsidering if you're planning a first date or need to impress parents/bosses. For drinks, the kabosu was strong with tequila with a hint of lemongrass and citrus flavors. The noguchii was perfect for those who like smokey drinks! Its strong and intense with a woody smoke every sip. Staff were polite and on top of your social media needs. In addition to the indoor bar/table area, there is a covered outdoor patio with heat lamps and blankets. Would come back for the drinks, probs not again for the food but worth trying!
