Small class, personal individualized instruction, affordable. JP is a very personable, easy going,…read moreknowledgeable instructor with alot of patience and a great sense of humor. Unlike some instructors who run their classes like a military drill instructor, JP is relaxed. He is not going to make you run laps around the dojo nor make you do 50 pushups. It doesn't matter if you are overweight or out of shape. It's not that kind of class. You are not there to learn Oriental wisdom, philosophy, discipline, loose weight, nor achieve enlightenment,...you are there to learn Wing Chun. I could kick myself for having spent years of hard training to achieve my Blackbelt in Shotokan Karate. I wanted to learn self-defense. I should have taken Wing Chun instead. I basically learned how to dance, doing katas with stylized, symbolic forms which are completely useless in a real fighting situation. Nothing really bad about Karate. I did learn discipline and the ART of Karate, not how to fight in a real world situation. Likewise, I practiced Chinese Boxing in Chinatown LA. Once again, the animal forms were graceful and beautiful, with lots of flowing movement. But if you are in a street fighting situation, you better fight like a man and not try to mimic a praying mantis, crane, or tiger since you do not have their physiology. Think about it. Imagine an insect or animal trying to fight like a human! They would not have the natural movements of a human, and their movements would be inefficient and awkward. Ever see a tiger or crane box and execute a front snap kick? It would look ridiculous! No disrespect intended to those who are practicing Karate and Chinese Boxing. I am just expressing my opinion based on my experiences. They have stood the test of time and are fun. Picking a Martial Arts class is like buying a tool. All tools are useful. You don't work up a sweat in the class...there isn't any jumping around. It's almost all blocking, trapping hands, and counter hitting. The system is ingenious, logical, and practical! WC is to Karate as chess is to checkers. If you have practiced Judo or Aikido, you will understand the logic of Wing Chun. I think you will find Wing Chun different and refreshing. Twice a week practice. You practice in your street clothes and no uniform to buy. WC is tailor made for self-defense/offense. You strike and defend at the same time! That's what turned me onto WC. Ideal for women. When I come home, I think: "Wow, that move was clever!" You will see what I mean when you go on YouTube and see what WC is all about. I'm taking Wing Chun strictly for fun. The best self defense: Use your head and control your ego.

These forms have been synthesized together by Sifu Richard Tsim, a 1st generation Chinese American teacher who has studied martial arts since he was very young. On the kung fu side, it's a mix of Hung Gar, Wing Chun and northern Shaolin styles. The Tai Chi is most similar to Wu style, and leads into circular Ba Gua forms. Tai Chi classes also include Qi Gong exercises. The facilities include an indoor and outdoor workout area which are inspiring both to look at and to practice in. Classes are held seven days a week, mornings every day and evenings on weekdays. Students can choose to attend just kung fu or just tai chi classes, but most students do a blend of both. Most of the students here are adults, but there is also now a Youth class for tweens and teens. Very young children would probably not work out well, but a focused 9-15 year old would be right at home. The instructors for that section are especially patient and knowledgeable as martial arts instructors go. You couldn't ask for a better scenario for a young learner.

"Lau Kune Do Temple of Martial Arts" caught my eye while I was riding my bike, trying to survive being stranded for months in LA due to Covid-19. The beautiful building, resembling an Asian Sanctuary, caught my eye and I was lucky to be able to meet and begin training with Sifu Tsim. Having studied Tai Chi since the 70's, in 4 countries, with 7 instructors, I feel confident in recommending Sifu Tsim's Lau Kune Do as "The Real Thing"...this is a purest and simplified approach to internal development and peace in life which, if you are willing to put in the work, will provide you with a reason to smile and stay strong, balanced, and kind every day. If you want to learn how to beat people up, this probably isn't the right place. If you want to master yourself and find balance in your life, it is the right place. Sifu Tsim and his capable instructor staff foster a nurturing environment of kindred spirits and dedicated practitioners of the right way to learn and practice martial arts for optimal health, peace of mind, and happiness. If you are accepted as a student, you will be very lucky.

I visited two other gyms in the area before deciding to continue my training at Jiujitsu League. I already had experience with jiujitsu and was not stranger to the art or the gym culture. I was immediately welcomed by the owners Kevin and Haley and all the regulars in the gym. You will find people here that are willing to help you start your jiujitsu journey or continue to grow and integrate new aspects into your game. You will also find that the owners and other instructors are very laid back and comfortable teaching/coaching all students, not just those who are already "good" at jiujitsu. You will not find people here who are trying to destroy you on the mats in an effort to boost their ego. Haley and Kevin are excellent instructors who go out of their way to make newcomers feel welcome. I joined BJJ because the idea of ever having to defend myself was scary to me. When I came to Jiu Jitsu League, I knew I was going to be absolutely horrible at it--but I also knew I would find great fulfillment if I stayed consistent, persevered through the physical and mental challenges, and learned this practical life skill and martial art that is objectively challenging. I've been learning BJJ here for two years now and I'm hooked. It has been challenging especially at the start. But seeing myself progress has been more fun and fulfilling than I had ever previously imagined--and I couldn't have asked for a better gym culture, coaches, or training partners to help me along the way. If any of what I said relates to you, maybe this is your sign to sign up!

Surprisingly, the fees and organizational structure of this school haven't changed in the more than ten years since I first inquired about it. This is not a belt factory, and they are genuinely interested in teaching the arts in their purest form, rather than for financial gain. Russell sensei is the current head instructor, and when I spoke with him recently, he was very nice and knowledgeable about the classes. I've spoken with other Karate schools that charge three times as much for half as many lessons and hours, which made me reconsider attending and lead me to consider other options. He has challenges with focus and self-control at times which is precisely why we wanted to enroll him in the Krav Classes. He started in the Lil Dragons program, and after about 4 months he was promoted to the Juniors program because he was doing so well. HERE is where it gets sad...he was told we would "trial" the Juniors class to see how he would do. After 6 weeks, he having difficulty with focus and self-control in the larger setting, but was making improvements over the last few sessions based on staff report and my observation. This past Tuesday, he wasn't paying attention and accidentally punched another kid in the face with his glove on (not hard but I'm sure it still hurt...he apologized to the child and resumed the class). I recommended that we put him back in the smaller class considering that my son was thriving in Lil Dragons, and he was consistently practicing safe partner work in Lil Dragons so there is no reason he would not thrive there again. Trying out lil Dragons to see how he does again posed no risk to anyone's safety. He just has ongoing challenges with focus and self-control which impacted his performance overall in the larger class. My son in a smaller class size would have more adult support and less distractions which would ultimately help him focus. This issue with the partner work the other day was not aggression, it was a lack of focus that resulted in a punch to someone's face (focus is precisely what a smaller class would support and DID support as of 6 weeks ago). 360 Krav's response was that he wouldn't be appropriate for the Lil Dragons class either (even though he was doing so well there 6 weeks ago that he was promoted!)...effectively expelling him from the program altogether. How 360 Krav has handled this is totally unacceptable. You promoted him to "try" out a new class...it was not a good fit, and now you are not letting him go back to the class that he was successful in. This is a disgraceful way to teach...you are literally punishing a child for being brave enough to try something new and then failing at it.

One thing I wanted to do when I moved was to sign up for a class with my partner, and I wanted it to be something active. I used to do daily walks around my old suburban hilly neighborhood during my lunch hour, but realized the area where I am in Long Beach is not only completely flat, but also not exactly the safest. My partner was previously involved with 360 before they moved to the current location, and he signed us up for an intro to learn about the classes that were offered. As with most things new to me, I was a little hesitant, but somehow walked out of that first meeting signing up for a membership and the 6 week program. I went home with a little bit of regret, though embraced the decision because I am always open for something new and challenging, and I felt good about not being pressured into any commitment. When I thought about starting, I was afraid that when I came in, I would be completely lost, or that it would be uninteresting or intimidating. Much to my surprise, it was not intimidating at all, and I walked out of the first class already looking forward to the combinations I would learn in the 2nd class. I've now completed about 18 classes after my 6 week challenge. My partner exceeded his goal and lost 15lbs and I am super close to hitting my goal of 15lbs, considering I had 2 business trips and 1 leisure trip in the last 3 weeks. I've learned to be more conscious about eating; reading more labels and measuring intake, which has really helped to curb my emotional wfh snacking when I'm bored. Additionally, I really appreciate the Mom and Pop aspect of this academy - Candace and Alan are not only both super approachable, but are also really encouraging and motivational individuals. They are very helpful in correcting form, process, and confidence and I'm thankful to have made the decision to join 360, not only for the fitness aspect, but also the practicality of the education learned from the classes!
