If you're looking for an OG place to train Boxing / Kickboxing / Kun Khmer / Pradal Serey / Muay…read moreThai this is the ONLY place to be.  Oum Ry is incredibly humble and is a living legend of Pradal Serey in Cambodia. I feel like if you have heritage in Cambodia, this place is a must to experience. Oum Ry is the only one who has a reason in keeping Pradal Serey alive in Southern California. He is 80 years old and is so agile and sharp. If you care about Cambodian culture, humble beginnings, rooting for the underdog, and a great work out,  this IS THE only PLACE to be. I wished I learned about him earlier to support him.  They have kids classes during the week and sparring sessions every weekend. All the kids seem like they are having fun when I dropped by. Instructor Ron is super helpful, very kind, and a funny guy. Parking is street. I've been to the gym numerous times and had zero problems.  There is a ring, heavy bags, speed bags, aqua bag, squat rack, There are zero frills and its raw as it can be here. I freaking love it. They don't try to sell you anything extra and they appreciate every member. You can drop in for the cost of a day pass, join to be a hobbyist to going pro. If you haven't gotten the book, I highly recommend it. It's an easy read with action and heartbreak. I was able to find solace in reading about experiences in the killing fields. I would also highly suggest dropping by the gym to purchase. They have available paperback copies. Bring cash to support.  Private sessions with Oum Ry is available. I got the honor and privilege to train with him privately and he will teach you the basics. You don't need equipment because you can use and borrow a loaner. There is some equipment you can purchase too. I was able to bring my own wraps and gloves, which was all you need to start. Oum Ry is super pleasant to work with, wrapped my hands, and held mitts for me to work on my technique. He is a bit shy but so humble, he speaks English well and if you know Khmer thats a plus.  I've link a way to purchase his book below. They do have paperback copies at the gym and you can even get it signed by Oum Ry himself. Just call.  I purchased mine with cash. https://doppelhousepress.myshopify.com/products/i-am-oum-ry-a-champion-kickboxer-s-story-of-surviving-the-cambodian-genocide-and-discovering-peace Would love to see some fight shorts or shirts for sale. I would absolutely get some. Follow them on Instagram for updates @lbkhmerkickboxing

I visited two other gyms in the area before deciding to continue my training at Jiujitsu League. I already had experience with jiujitsu and was not stranger to the art or the gym culture. I was immediately welcomed by the owners Kevin and Haley and all the regulars in the gym. You will find people here that are willing to help you start your jiujitsu journey or continue to grow and integrate new aspects into your game. You will also find that the owners and other instructors are very laid back and comfortable teaching/coaching all students, not just those who are already "good" at jiujitsu. You will not find people here who are trying to destroy you on the mats in an effort to boost their ego. You can learn at your own pace and the availability of multiple classes throughout the day/week will help you find the time and space that suits you best. I can't say enough good things about this gym and the people. Feel free to just come by and watch a class to get a feel for the environment. Good luck in your search.

Haley and Kevin are excellent instructors who go out of their way to make newcomers feel welcome. I joined BJJ because the idea of ever having to defend myself was scary to me. When I came to Jiu Jitsu League, I knew I was going to be absolutely horrible at it--but I also knew I would find great fulfillment if I stayed consistent, persevered through the physical and mental challenges, and learned this practical life skill and martial art that is objectively challenging. I've been learning BJJ here for two years now and I'm hooked. It has been challenging especially at the start. But seeing myself progress has been more fun and fulfilling than I had ever previously imagined--and I couldn't have asked for a better gym culture, coaches, or training partners to help me along the way. If any of what I said relates to you, maybe this is your sign to sign up!

Surprisingly, the fees and organizational structure of this school haven't changed in the more than ten years since I first inquired about it. I have prior Karate experience and can distinguish between top-notch and questionable schools based on their lineage and training protocol, and Lakewood Budo Kai is unquestionably a top-notch school. This is not a belt factory, and they are genuinely interested in teaching the arts in their purest form, rather than for financial gain. Russell sensei is the current head instructor, and when I spoke with him recently, he was very nice and knowledgeable about the classes. I've spoken with other Karate schools that charge three times as much for half as many lessons and hours, which made me reconsider attending and lead me to consider other options. Lakewood Budo Kai is a rare find if you live near Long Beach and are looking for reputable martial arts instruction. I strongly advise you to contact them.

These forms have been synthesized together by Sifu Richard Tsim, a 1st generation Chinese American teacher who has studied martial arts since he was very young. On the kung fu side, it's a mix of Hung Gar, Wing Chun and northern Shaolin styles. The Tai Chi is most similar to Wu style, and leads into circular Ba Gua forms. Tai Chi classes also include Qi Gong exercises. The facilities include an indoor and outdoor workout area which are inspiring both to look at and to practice in. Classes are held seven days a week, mornings every day and evenings on weekdays. Students can choose to attend just kung fu or just tai chi classes, but most students do a blend of both. Most of the students here are adults, but there is also now a Youth class for tweens and teens. Very young children would probably not work out well, but a focused 9-15 year old would be right at home. The instructors for that section are especially patient and knowledgeable as martial arts instructors go. You couldn't ask for a better scenario for a young learner.

"Lau Kune Do Temple of Martial Arts" caught my eye while I was riding my bike, trying to survive being stranded for months in LA due to Covid-19. The beautiful building, resembling an Asian Sanctuary, caught my eye and I was lucky to be able to meet and begin training with Sifu Tsim. Having studied Tai Chi since the 70's, in 4 countries, with 7 instructors, I feel confident in recommending Sifu Tsim's Lau Kune Do as "The Real Thing"...this is a purest and simplified approach to internal development and peace in life which, if you are willing to put in the work, will provide you with a reason to smile and stay strong, balanced, and kind every day. If you want to learn how to beat people up, this probably isn't the right place. If you want to master yourself and find balance in your life, it is the right place. Sifu Tsim and his capable instructor staff foster a nurturing environment of kindred spirits and dedicated practitioners of the right way to learn and practice martial arts for optimal health, peace of mind, and happiness. If you are accepted as a student, you will be very lucky.
