When we first started dating, he told me about Lyoto, and it felt like destiny that our son would one day train at a place tied to someone we both respected. Back then, the youngest age accepted was 4, so I had to wait patiently. When my son was 3.5, I reached out to the dojo to plan ahead, and that's when I met Sensei Caroline the sweetest, most professional guide you could hope for. I also had the honor of meeting Chinzo Machida. He is incredibly humble and professional, even with a 4-year-old student, which immediately put me at ease. My son absolutely loved his time there. He would talk about it constantly, excited for every lesson, every practice. Unfortunately, after about two months, I realized he wasn't quite ready for the level of discipline and structure required yet, and I didn't want him or the class to struggle. I was excited when I found out they were going to collaborate. Training jiu jitsu here reminds me of the "pre UFC days" when classes were smaller and more personal. These days it's impossible to find a legit studio where 1) the main coach actually coaches, rolls with students, and actually knows you 2) everyone knows each other 3) and you get asks specific questions one on one with the coach Very old school jiu jitsu gym feel. Plus there is a lot of mat room and the time schedule works well for me. If you are thinking about training jiujitsu, go! You will add sometime to your game after every class!

It includes students of a wide range of backgrounds, ages, ethnicities and abilities which provides great exposure and inclusion. Master Soo is stern, has a commanding voice, earns the respect of her students and parents. She is understanding when students are a little late, friendly with sibling spectators, knowledgeable in her skills and teaching abilities. Instructor Arvin is as patient as he is skilled. He does a great job assisting Master Soo with her lessons, doesn't skip a beat, also earns the respect of the students and really cares about them. There are plenty of classes throughout the week, to fit with a flexible schedule. Although the price is at a slight premium compared to other martial arts studios, it's worth every penny. The facility has a decent parking lot on the lower level nearest the studio but since it's a strip mall, there is more parking available on the 2nd level near Trader Joe's. A great venue to drop the kids off and do a quick grocery run or a quick workout at LA Fitness or a quick haircut, etc. But I choose to stay and watch the fun classes!
