When we first started dating, he told me about Lyoto, and it felt like destiny that our son would one day train at a place tied to someone we both respected. Back then, the youngest age accepted was 4, so I had to wait patiently. When my son was 3.5, I reached out to the dojo to plan ahead, and that's when I met Sensei Caroline the sweetest, most professional guide you could hope for. I also had the honor of meeting Chinzo Machida. He is incredibly humble and professional, even with a 4-year-old student, which immediately put me at ease. My son absolutely loved his time there. He would talk about it constantly, excited for every lesson, every practice. Unfortunately, after about two months, I realized he wasn't quite ready for the level of discipline and structure required yet, and I didn't want him or the class to struggle. I spoke with Sensei Caroline honestly, and she was completely supportive, encouraging us to return when the time felt right. This academy deserves every ounce of respect and recognition. The environment, the instructors, and the care they put into their students are truly exceptional. My son joined the Machida Karate Summer Camp. We had been wanting to sign him up for some kind of martial arts class, but he really wasn't interested. When I read that the camp also offered crafts, self-defense, and playtime, I thought it would be a great introduction for him. After the camp, he said he wants to go again next year, and this is the only class he wants to continue! Now he's officially enrolled twice a week. To be honest, I wasn't really considering karate and was leaning more toward other martial arts. Fast forward a couple years and we took the opportunity for the free week trial and my son absolutely loved it. Sensei Weber and Sensei Kunimasa are very good at teaching children. My child has been here in Machida for a year, and I also plan to enroll my other child in the class when he turns 4 years old. I like how the sensei teaches the children, they focus on helping the kids learn and explain clearly to them the purpose of each stance. Another good reason is the discipline that the children gain. Machida karate is a great place to learn self-defense and karate. I love that they include other disciplines like self defense and jiu jutsu and not just traditional karate. My kids loooooooove Machida Academy! They've been attending for 6 months and it's been a great extracurricular for them, learning discipline and technique. The 1 hr classes are structured with two senseis teaching skills but also sprinkling play into it. Building is very nice and well maintained but parking is very difficult. Instructors are very good and patient especially with kids. Many of the instructors are UFC champions so they are very well qualified in martial arts, but still maintain patience with kids and know how to talk with them appropriately. The class schedule is also flexible and if you can't make a class you can attend a different one another day in the week. read more

Great karate academy that emphasizes striking, takedowns, and ground work. I've been a fan of Lyoto Machida since he came to the UFC back in 2007. When I saw his gym was somewhat near me I decided to go for a few classes. I never got to meet Lyoto but his brother Chinzo taught some of the classes I went to. Chinzo himself was a professional fighter but hasn't fought in some time. He's very approachable, friendly, respectful, and a good teacher. I trained there during Covid times so we all had to wear masks and unfortunately we didn't get to do any grappling as close contact had to be avoided. The hours there are good as there are morning and afternoon classes. I would've liked to continue training there but once LA traffic starting creeping back up, the drive to Torrance was just too long. We've been taking our boys here for some time now. The senseis are awesome; always enthusiastic, professional, and incredibly patient when the little one's would rather run around and scream than pay attention! We can't imagine bringing our kids to any other dojo. Also, the facility is huge and clean. As the students go up in their belts, the instruction becomes more focused on their skills but appropriately, more fun and cardio based with basic teachings for the younger ones. It's also a huge plus knowing that the senseis are real fighters and it's very cool to be able to watch them fight either live or via youtube. I really don't see any minuses! read more

It is a beautiful, clean and professional facility that is the perfect blend of traditional and modern technique. The depth of knowledge and ability of the instructors is matched by their humility and warmth. This is a world class facility for serious martial artists as well as newcomers and their families to train in a clean and safe environment with knowledgeable and friendly instructors. I did 5 days free trial and the senseis are very friendly and caring. The manager is also very helpful. The dojo is very spacey although from outside it doesn't look like that. I use groupon discount for my first month. My friends in Indonesia also know this place too. [Review #226] My daughter took taekwondo lessons twice (2-1/2 & 4 years old), even earning a yellow belt before losing interest. Not sure if it's the lack of connection with her classmates, but she definitely likes & respects her master. 2 years later, H wanted an after-school/weekend activity & wanted to do martial arts. There was a nearby studio that we were going to look into, but we happened to drive past Machida Karate Academy & decided to have a look. A youth class was in session during our inquiry/visit. The school was opened a few months & had specials if you commit to a longer contract with advanced payment; they also offer 5 free trial classes to see if they're a good fit for you. Before H completed her trial (which was taken into account towards the 1st belt - yellow), we signed her up for the Youth Samurai program. :-) Senseis (Chinzo & Lyoto) Machida are intimidating fighters in their element when they're competing; in class, they're patient, down-to-earth, & intuitive instructors that know how to encourage & engage their students: when to be serious & train hard, & when to have fun & let loose. Even in a group class, the senseis are able to target areas of strengths & weaknesses to provide constructive feedback for continuous improvement whether it's posture (an area we have to reinforce with my LO), technique (she's got this down), or behavior (sometimes she's a bit unruly when she's excited). I love the "usable" self-defense techniques that can be applied in real life situations, especially for girls. I hope my daughter never finds herself in these situations (knock on wood), but she's taught self-defense skills to either protect herself or to get away from the attacker. =) Initially, classes were small & have since grown through word-of-mouth, Machidas' popularity, Groupon marketing, etc. We like the familiarity of the MKA, it's very family-oriented & offers a safe, supportive environment for learning. You often see Sensei Machida's kids in the studio. When students graduate to the next belt level, achievements are celebrated with a potluck-style dinner. My LO gets excited for her next belt promotion & a little shy for the recognition. There's a "living room" for parents & siblings while they wait for the class to finish. The restrooms have a changing area & a shower for students to change &/or clean-up after class. The studio is open & spacious, & kept clean & orderly. While there are plenty of street parking spaces, weekday evening slots can be a challenge. It's been more than 6 months since H stepped into MKA's studio... she has already earned a yellow belt & will be testing for her next belt (orange) soon. First, there's a reason why this dojo is rated 5 stars. It is the best! Everyone there is so friendly and welcoming. My son has always been timid and shy and was experiencing some bullying at school. One day we received a flyer from MKA for an anti-bullying seminar they were having. We signed up and it was a life changer.
