He has challenges with focus and self-control at times which is precisely why we wanted to enroll him in the Krav Classes. He started in the Lil Dragons program, and after about 4 months he was promoted to the Juniors program because he was doing so well. HERE is where it gets sad...he was told we would "trial" the Juniors class to see how he would do. After 6 weeks, he having difficulty with focus and self-control in the larger setting, but was making improvements over the last few sessions based on staff report and my observation. This past Tuesday, he wasn't paying attention and accidentally punched another kid in the face with his glove on (not hard but I'm sure it still hurt...he apologized to the child and resumed the class). I recommended that we put him back in the smaller class considering that my son was thriving in Lil Dragons, and he was consistently practicing safe partner work in Lil Dragons so there is no reason he would not thrive there again. Trying out lil Dragons to see how he does again posed no risk to anyone's safety. He just has ongoing challenges with focus and self-control which impacted his performance overall in the larger class. My son in a smaller class size would have more adult support and less distractions which would ultimately help him focus. This issue with the partner work the other day was not aggression, it was a lack of focus that resulted in a punch to someone's face (focus is precisely what a smaller class would support and DID support as of 6 weeks ago). 360 Krav's response was that he wouldn't be appropriate for the Lil Dragons class either (even though he was doing so well there 6 weeks ago that he was promoted!)...effectively expelling him from the program altogether. How 360 Krav has handled this is totally unacceptable. You promoted him to "try" out a new class...it was not a good fit, and now you are not letting him go back to the class that he was successful in. This is a disgraceful way to teach...you are literally punishing a child for being brave enough to try something new and then failing at it.

Haley and Kevin are excellent instructors who go out of their way to make newcomers feel welcome. I joined BJJ because the idea of ever having to defend myself was scary to me. When I came to Jiu Jitsu League, I knew I was going to be absolutely horrible at it--but I also knew I would find great fulfillment if I stayed consistent, persevered through the physical and mental challenges, and learned this practical life skill and martial art that is objectively challenging. I've been learning BJJ here for two years now and I'm hooked. It has been challenging especially at the start. But seeing myself progress has been more fun and fulfilling than I had ever previously imagined--and I couldn't have asked for a better gym culture, coaches, or training partners to help me along the way. Unlike some instructors who run their classes like a military drill instructor, JP is relaxed. He is not going to make you run laps around the dojo nor make you do 50 pushups. It doesn't matter if you are overweight or out of shape. It's not that kind of class. You are not there to learn Oriental wisdom, philosophy, discipline, loose weight, nor achieve enlightenment,...you are there to learn Wing Chun. I could kick myself for having spent years of hard training to achieve my Blackbelt in Shotokan Karate. I wanted to learn self-defense. I should have taken Wing Chun instead. I basically learned how to dance, doing katas with stylized, symbolic forms which are completely useless in a real fighting situation. Nothing really bad about Karate. I did learn discipline and the ART of Karate, not how to fight in a real world situation. Likewise, I practiced Chinese Boxing in Chinatown LA. Once again, the animal forms were graceful and beautiful, with lots of flowing movement. But if you are in a street fighting situation, you better fight like a man and not try to mimic a praying mantis, crane, or tiger since you do not have their physiology. Think about it. Imagine an insect or animal trying to fight like a human! They would not have the natural movements of a human, and their movements would be inefficient and awkward. Ever see a tiger or crane box and execute a front snap kick? It would look ridiculous! No disrespect intended to those who are practicing Karate and Chinese Boxing. I am just expressing my opinion based on my experiences. They have stood the test of time and are fun. Picking a Martial Arts class is like buying a tool. All tools are useful. You don't work up a sweat in the class...there isn't any jumping around. It's almost all blocking, trapping hands, and counter hitting. The system is ingenious, logical, and practical! WC is to Karate as chess is to checkers. If you have practiced Judo or Aikido, you will understand the logic of Wing Chun. I think you will find Wing Chun different and refreshing. Twice a week practice. You practice in your street clothes and no uniform to buy. WC is tailor made for self-defense/offense. You strike and defend at the same time! That's what turned me onto WC. Ideal for women. When I come home, I think: "Wow, that move was clever!" You will see what I mean when you go on YouTube and see what WC is all about. I'm taking Wing Chun strictly for fun. The best self defense: Use your head and control your ego.
