One of the hardest things to find when it comes to find a good fighting gym is a place that has the…read moreright culture and vibe for everyone. A place that isn't toxic, that has respectful regulars who aren't territorial, a place where people offer their hand and give their name first before asking for yours. You'd be surprised at how openly hostile, rude, tribal, clique-y, and toxic a fighting gym can be. (Or maybe you aren't) Regardless, the rare places that aren't like that, you gotta hold onto. Not to mention, you have to have a coach who took the time, paid "the dues", and is passionate about the art. The DEN, I can assure is one of those places. If you're curious about the art of 8 limbs, or if you're somebody who wants to fully get into it. Stop by the Den! 10/10 would recommend. On a side note.....Coach James is one of the great "what-ifs" of the sport. In my mind, he could have been an incredible professional fighter. But, in his own words, "I never liked the spot light and I don't like getting too much attention." But "I just love Muay Thai, and I'm getting to do what I love." But don't let the sentiment fool you. He's an absolute beast in the ring, and guys nearly 20 years his junior have a hard time keeping up with him when they spar. The gym also is quite "Spartan", no frills, no expensive machines, one punching bag, a few weights, a bathroom, an equipment room, a mat area, and a ring. That's about it. Everyone gets nice a close on a busy day, but for me, that's kind of the charm of the place. No crazy amenities, just a temple dedicated to the striking art. The regulars, including the guys who have been coming for years, are remarkably laid-back individuals. No real chip on anyone's shoulders, no one is trying to prove anything, just a bunch of real enthusiasts of the art. Case in point, I'm surprised to find that after a few weeks, a bunch of them even remembered my name, gave me a fist bump, and welcomed me back. But again, don't let the sentiment fool you, if you punch hard, they'll punch back harder, and if you think you keep up with them, they'll take you to depths you haven't been before. There are levels to this game, and there a people there who are going to be 2-3 levels above you. My advice, be friendly, be consistent, be respectful, and stay humble.

I feel like if you have heritage in Cambodia, this place is a must to experience. Oum Ry is the only one who has a reason in keeping Pradal Serey alive in Southern California. He is 80 years old and is so agile and sharp. If you care about Cambodian culture, humble beginnings, rooting for the underdog, and a great work out,  this IS THE only PLACE to be. I wished I learned about him earlier to support him.  They have kids classes during the week and sparring sessions every weekend. All the kids seem like they are having fun when I dropped by. Instructor Ron is super helpful, very kind, and a funny guy. Parking is street. I've been to the gym numerous times and had zero problems.  There is a ring, heavy bags, speed bags, aqua bag, squat rack, There are zero frills and its raw as it can be here. I freaking love it. They don't try to sell you anything extra and they appreciate every member. You can drop in for the cost of a day pass, join to be a hobbyist to going pro. If you haven't gotten the book, I highly recommend it. It's an easy read with action and heartbreak. I was able to find solace in reading about experiences in the killing fields. I would also highly suggest dropping by the gym to purchase. They have available paperback copies. Bring cash to support.  Private sessions with Oum Ry is available. I got the honor and privilege to train with him privately and he will teach you the basics. You don't need equipment because you can use and borrow a loaner. There is some equipment you can purchase too. I was able to bring my own wraps and gloves, which was all you need to start. Oum Ry is super pleasant to work with, wrapped my hands, and held mitts for me to work on my technique. He is a bit shy but so humble, he speaks English well and if you know Khmer thats a plus.  I've link a way to purchase his book below. They do have paperback copies at the gym and you can even get it signed by Oum Ry himself. Just call.  I purchased mine with cash. https://doppelhousepress.myshopify.com/products/i-am-oum-ry-a-champion-kickboxer-s-story-of-surviving-the-cambodian-genocide-and-discovering-peace Would love to see some fight shorts or shirts for sale. Our daughter Delilah has been training here, and we've decided without hesitation to keep her enrolled long-term. From day one, Coaches Warren, Alex, Jefferson and all the coaches at BTT have been nothing short of phenomenal. They've shown an incredible amount of patience, dedication, and care with Delilah, and it's clear they genuinely love what they do. What really stood out to us is how they treat each child as an individual, recognizing where they are in their journey and guiding them not just physically, but emotionally and mentally as well. They give each student personalized attention while also nurturing a strong sense of discipline, confidence, and respect. The environment is supportive, structured, and full of positive energy. You can see how much the kids are enjoying themselves while learning real skills. There's a beautiful balance here between focus and fun, and as parents, that means the world to us. Brazilian Top Team Long Beach has already made a lasting impression on our family, and we're excited to see Delilah continue to grow here. The final straw for me was when me and my training partner had a scheduled call to discuss our training and Steven completely flaked and never called. I then emailed him to tell him I'm done, and of course he didn't care or inquire as to why I'm done, especially after I had been so dedicated to the IMB. I've been learning BJJ here for two years now and I'm hooked. It has been challenging especially at the start. He has challenges with focus and self-control at times which is precisely why we wanted to enroll him in the Krav Classes. He started in the Lil Dragons program, and after about 4 months he was promoted to the Juniors program because he was doing so well. HERE is where it gets sad...he was told we would "trial" the Juniors class to see how he would do. After 6 weeks, he having difficulty with focus and self-control in the larger setting, but was making improvements over the last few sessions based on staff report and my observation. This past Tuesday, he wasn't paying attention and accidentally punched another kid in the face with his glove on (not hard but I'm sure it still hurt...he apologized to the child and resumed the class). I recommended that we put him back in the smaller class considering that my son was thriving in Lil Dragons, and he was consistently practicing safe partner work in Lil Dragons so there is no reason he would not thrive there again. Trying out lil Dragons to see how he does again posed no risk to anyone's safety. He just has ongoing challenges with focus and self-control which impacted his performance overall in the larger class. My son in a smaller class size would have more adult support and less distractions which would ultimately help him focus. This issue with the partner work the other day was not aggression, it was a lack of focus that resulted in a punch to someone's face (focus is precisely what a smaller class would support and DID support as of 6 weeks ago). 360 Krav's response was that he wouldn't be appropriate for the Lil Dragons class either (even though he was doing so well there 6 weeks ago that he was promoted!)...effectively expelling him from the program altogether. How 360 Krav has handled this is totally unacceptable. You promoted him to "try" out a new class...it was not a good fit, and now you are not letting him go back to the class that he was successful in. This is a disgraceful way to teach...you are literally punishing a child for being brave enough to try something new and then failing at it.

One thing I wanted to do when I moved was to sign up for a class with my partner, and I wanted it to be something active. I used to do daily walks around my old suburban hilly neighborhood during my lunch hour, but realized the area where I am in Long Beach is not only completely flat, but also not exactly the safest. My partner was previously involved with 360 before they moved to the current location, and he signed us up for an intro to learn about the classes that were offered. As with most things new to me, I was a little hesitant, but somehow walked out of that first meeting signing up for a membership and the 6 week program. I went home with a little bit of regret, though embraced the decision because I am always open for something new and challenging, and I felt good about not being pressured into any commitment. When I thought about starting, I was afraid that when I came in, I would be completely lost, or that it would be uninteresting or intimidating. Much to my surprise, it was not intimidating at all, and I walked out of the first class already looking forward to the combinations I would learn in the 2nd class. I've now completed about 18 classes after my 6 week challenge. My partner exceeded his goal and lost 15lbs and I am super close to hitting my goal of 15lbs, considering I had 2 business trips and 1 leisure trip in the last 3 weeks. I've learned to be more conscious about eating; reading more labels and measuring intake, which has really helped to curb my emotional wfh snacking when I'm bored. Additionally, I really appreciate the Mom and Pop aspect of this academy - Candace and Alan are not only both super approachable, but are also really encouraging and motivational individuals. They are very helpful in correcting form, process, and confidence and I'm thankful to have made the decision to join 360, not only for the fitness aspect, but also the practicality of the education learned from the classes!
