The competitive nature of that program and discipline didn't build her confidence much. Here, the practice is focused on the individual but also as a part of the collective team. No real sparring yet in the Little Samurai class, only some practice punches and kicks with chest protectors. Lots of punching bag practice for strength building and training. Lots of calisthenics as well with lunges, jumping jacks, mountain climbers, frog jumps, burpees, etc. Skills that they can use their whole lives and get stronger with. At the same time, there will be fun games like tag, dodgeball, red light green light to keep their interest and to work on reflexes. Excellent training in focus and active listening as well with focus claps, raising hands to speak, caring for others and awareness of everyone's space. These things I have not encountered in any other studio/dojo. I've seen many places that allow disruptive students or even parents. In contrast, here at 1st class, they don't teach blind discipline towards any instructor/owner but respect for one's self and each other. This alone is what keeps us coming back. This is what schools don't teach enough of. Not to mention the actual martial arts she is learning here. Channeling their chi into a strong Aiya, learning how to punch and kick correctly in self defense. Amazing program for little ones. Master Soo is stern, has a commanding voice, earns the respect of her students and parents. She is understanding when students are a little late, friendly with sibling spectators, knowledgeable in her skills and teaching abilities. Instructor Arvin is as patient as he is skilled. He does a great job assisting Master Soo with her lessons, doesn't skip a beat, also earns the respect of the students and really cares about them. There are plenty of classes throughout the week, to fit with a flexible schedule. Although the price is at a slight premium compared to other martial arts studios, it's worth every penny. The facility has a decent parking lot on the lower level nearest the studio but since it's a strip mall, there is more parking available on the 2nd level near Trader Joe's. When I went here to enroll her, they told me she could attend the next class which I was done enrolling 15mins before the class starts, and the tae kwon do teacher cleans and preps the mat that they practice on so I dont mind if my daughter lays down. Also the schedule is very flexible. There's about 10-15 kids in class and the Black belt students helps him tame and train the kids. We'll be staying here for awhile I'm pretty sure.

And it's all because of the coaching and teaching techniques the Salim's have implemented. They make training interesting for the students. In addition to traditional TKD training, the Salim's take students on trail runs, beach runs, track runs to mix things up. And while they train hard, they have created an environment where the students feel like family. I have never before experienced someone so dedicated and so committed to the success and betterment of the kids than Master Salim. The amount of time he spends is literally mind boggling. Is it hard and challenging for the kids? Absolutely. If your goal with your child is to have them get a bit of exercise and earn a belt or two and have someone pat them on the back for mediocrity, then this isn't the school for you.
