Cant believe I wasted this long to hike this trail! Located on schofield barracks, it is really easy to find just by following the road to the end of kolekole pass road. The entrance of the trail is hard to miss and there are tons of parking. Definitely rated one of my favorite hikes. Super kid friendly, easy, with a great view at the end of the hike.

Today's lovely hike on this trail with kids and even a small puppy was spotted on this trail ! It was a easy trail with a bit of an incline but ropes to help you alongside. The view at the end of the trail was worth going it was a lovely day and seeing across the island towards Waianae was great ! I believe there are more difficult trails you can do if you keep going but since we had kids with us we decided to cut the trip short!

    Overcast and still beautiful!

Short & quick hike with rewarding views...Awesome!!!!! Darn...I need more than that in order for this review to "stick"...so I'll add my 2 cents in addition to other reviews and try not to repeat what has already been said. Several reviews have already stated that this is on Army property and how to access it so I don't want to repeat all that...you get it. I will however add this website: http://www.garrison.hawaii.army.mil/info/hiking.htm This gives you the most up to date information on when the trail is open, who can access....when, etc. I will say that the main trail is a short hike. The beginning is a little steep, but honestly its the worst part and it doesn't last long. Get past that and its pretty easy. The views at the top are quite rewarding. Normally you have to go on some pretty challenging and/or timely hikes to get the views that you do here in a very short time. Plus, it is very easy to take children and even babies. It's well worth the stop. I believe I was told it was only about a 1/2 mile each way. The hike is located at the end of Trimble Road and the parking lot is small. When the lot is full you can park along the road. It gets really congested where the parking is. When you see cars parked as you come down the road...you're there...slow down. I watched 4 cars come down that road full speed ahead and slam on their brakes when they saw people, kids, other cars trying to maneuver, and the dead end (which is a gate). There aren't really any signs until you're there, so be prepared to slow down and stop. There are a lot of families, kids and elderly around so slow down. It's a dead end anyway...you aren't going anywhere except turning around or parking. You probably will encounter a lot of people even though it's a short hike. Why? Well...its not open that much!!! Please respect the property when you are there. We took the hike and it was clear of any trash...wonderful! On the way back down we saw (and picked up) candy wrappers, baby wipes and a ziploc baggie. Seriously? This is awesome that the Army opens this up to us, so please clean up after yourselves and don't expect others to do it for you. Enjoy this "treat" (for the lack of a better term), stay safe, respect other hikers and especially the land....alas...have a good time! You're going to love it!

It's a really fun short hike. I enjoyed it. Baby wearing friendly and dog friendly as well. The views are also pretty nice. No complaints at all. Probably the easiest hike I've done in Hawaii. It's only open certain weekends so I would plan accordingly.

What to look for. Cars were parked in front of this.

This trail is located on Schofield Barracks, it is open to DoD ID cardholders and their guest. If you don't have access, you can stop reading here. I know... bummer. But if you have base access, my friends and I found out via Facebook when it was open on U. S. Army Garrison-Hawaii. It lists dates and times and a number for gate access. The trailhead is not gated though. I didn't drive and I don't know my way around base, there's a creepy abandoned shed on the right of the road that leads to the trail. Look out for a hiking sign and there were cars parked in front of it. Prior to getting to the trail, my friend warned me that this trail is haunted. There's a large rock along the path. Each time it gets moved, the large rock mysteriously moves back. You'll see it along this trail. It has an odd shapes to it. There's a captain's seat like shape on the trail side. It didn't dawn on us when we passed it, there was a couple taking pictures on it so we didn't think anything of it. It is a very short and easy hike. The first 5 minutes have steep steps, but is manageable for dogs and small children. This trail should be a round trip of 30 minutes or less. But my friend and I dicked around and took longer for pictures and shenanigans. Of course you should always obey the rules and use caution for safety purposes. The day we went was gusty, made it sketchy trying to enjoy the view at the ledge. It was a beautiful day! I would recommend bringing snacks and water and wear sunscreen! And alway pick up after yourselves, you want to leave the land the way you found it so others can enjoy it too!

So I had heard that the Japanese planes were first spotted by radar operators stationed at Kolekole Pass when they bombed Schofield Barracks and Pearl Harbor. Being a military history buff and former military brat, I did a little research and found the road that leads up to the pass. I first visited the 25th Infantry Tropical Lighting division's museum at Schofield Barracks before driving up there and was glad I did. My father served with them during the Viet Nam war, stationed in the Golden Triangle region. Upon getting to the top, I was surprised to find a trail with a sign that said Kolekole Pass Rock with a story about an old woman who guarded the trail. See photo. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/7Hb7t6KLF55GxDNLsZRttw?select=EH3zCFRVUfCkHxhWoXmjpg I scrambled up the trail, which was extremely steep and had signs warning of how dangerous it was. The trees were rustling in the wind and I had a creepy feeling up there. I read somewhere that the ghosts of Hawaiian Warriors march through the pass and will bump you if you get in their way. There is a cell phone tower there and the rock is up a trail to the right. The rock is weird because it's just sitting there by itself with an indention where I assume the beheadings of defeated chiefs took place. See photo. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/7Hb7t6KLF55GxDNLsZRttw?select=YKUoLhTQr-TAmTXYP-a6Xw Go past the tower and to the left is a trail which gives you a view of the pass and the valley below. It's an awesome view and worth the hike up. See photo. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/7Hb7t6KLF55GxDNLsZRttw?select=t4PA7TuIg2TCxBkVuRw7AA Coming back down the path to the parking lot, there were two Military Police vehicles checking out my car, but just drove off when I got to the parking lot. So don't do anything stupid up there because there is a manned gate just up the road and they do patrol the area.

Trail head is clearly marked. Parking is available in front or on side of the road

If you're an avid hiker, keep Kolekole Trail on your list for when you're injured and need an easy trail. If you're looking to hike with your young kids, out of town guests who aren't hikers, or are a new hiker Kolekole Trail is for you. Well, actually there's two things that make this trail difficult. First being they're only open on select weekends. Click the below link for open days. Also note the trail is on Schofield so non-military will need to enter through Lyman Gate on Kunia Road and all adults will need proper ID and the driver will need proper vehicle registration and safety test. https://www.facebook.com/usaghawaii/ The second challenge for this trail is the rain. The day we went the wet pine needles and flat green algae on the trail had people slipping and sliding all over the place. I saw one lady fall before she even got to the trailhead! Otherwise, this hike is short, sweet and simple with amazing views! Trek on Yelpers!

Located on Schofield Barracks, this road used to be open as a military passage/highway from Waianae to Wahiawa. Closed because of a landslide and now used as ammunition test sites. It's hit and miss to find a time when the gates are open to hike. Take Trimble all the way to the end and that's the main hike. I am sure there are tons of other trails but with such a steep drop off I'm good on the main road. There's parking in a dirt lot and street parking available. Only hike during the weekend and when there is no live fire. This is only for the main trail, but I would call it the hangover hike. Something you "hike" with your friends when you need to show them a cool spot but can hardly move because of what went down last night. Super easy for young kids, just carry them up a couple stairs and the rest is pretty flat. It's shady and oh so breezy. But it is all about the view. Every direction I looked I was speechless! Ocean view, jutting up mountains, sheer rock faces, rolling valleys, it was spectacular! The best part is this cute little bench at the end of the trail. To sit and just stare out at the forbidden side with nothing but the howling wind at your back was so peaceful. Be careful and never get to close to the edge! A big gust of wind could send you over. Recently this year, boyscotts updated the trail with new wood steps and ropes. Thanks boys, you made it extra easy, job well done!

the Kolekole Pass hike has very remarkable scenic views while making your way to the top. the first segment of the hike can look very intimidating due to the incline and rope assistance but after that, it's fairly easy. there are designated paths with marked signs to keep you on trail. just like how everyone else is mentioning, you'll need to have base access to start your journey on this hike. the trail is only opened on selected weekends so don't hesitate to seize the opportunity to experience this hike. overall one of my top five favorite hikes here on the island.

    Great for little hikers!

It was open this weekend so we took the opportunity to take in the incredible view! This is a great beginners hike. When we arrived on Oahu, this was our first hike on the island. It is located on Schofield Barracks and this trail is only open on weekends and that is if the Army is not using it for training. If you check the US Army Garrison Hawaii page on FB, they will usually announce it on their page if it is open for that weekend. Once you get on base (need a pass if you do not have a military ID), get on to Trimble and head toward the mountains. Keep going past the residential neighborhoods and continue on through the training grounds. You must keep going up until you see a small parking lot and where the access road ends. You are basically driving up the mountain and only hiking a very small portion of the top. The beginning of the trail is steep and can look intimidating, but there are stairs built in to it and once you get past the stairs, it's easy peasy to the top which is marked by a bench. There are a variety of different plants and flowers. Look out for the Strawberry Guava growing in abundance there. The view at the top is absolutely amazing! There are two lookout points, one is what I call the red hill (red dirt) and then the bench looking out over Waianae. My 2.5 yo did this entire trail by herself today. Great starter family hike. No facilities or trash cans, so please take your trash with you. Dogs are allowed as long as they are on a leash. A small parking lot available at trail head. Definitely worth the trip if you are in the area.

It's a very short hike and at some parts are steep but it does have stairs and rope. If you have small children and if it's windy make sure you hold them or their hand. Have fun guy's!

Love this short hike! It's less than a mile and it's got a great view at the end. I've been twice and carried my daughter in the Tula (she's about to be two). I wouldn't recommend toddlers to walk but older kids should have no problem. No bathroom or water nearby so make sure to go before you start or stop at the shoppette that's before the long road. The first hill is probably the hardest part but just take it nice and slow and the rest is easy. This is a hike I'll be bringing my parents to enjoy because it's an easy hike.

And even after we moved, we would still drive out just to come here for the seafood. That's how special it was to us. He knew what to look for, and he trusted this place. For him, it wasn't just about buying food... it was about getting the best for his family. My dad isn't the type to say "I love you." He shows it. One of the biggest ways he showed love was through his cooking. Even after a long day on his feet cooking for others, he would come home and cook for us. That was his way of taking care of us. I loved coming here with him. It was a five-senses overload--the smell of fresh seafood, the sound of people talking story, the colors of fish on display.
