    Bandeja Paisa

I started yelping in order to find amazing hole-in-the-wall restaurants, known for their good food. My parents are Colombian, born and raised. And this is one of the few restaurants that specialize in a couple of Colombian dishes FANTASTICLLY, that we love. We usually come here around the holidays, because as I've mentioned in past reviews, it's just us four. No one wants to cook for the holidays, so my mom doesn't. Instead we open gifts, dance, and go out to eat transitional food. I ate some morsilla with arepas blancas. The arepas are cooked right there, next to you, so they come out fresh and hot. The morsilla is not too dry and not too greasy. It's perfect in flavor. My parents come here to get the Bandeja Paisa, which is just an assortment of beef, pork, rice, beans, chicharrón, chorizo, and avocado. For me, it's a restaurant that's authentic, but you do have to come knowing what you want. We come here and order the same things (don't even look at the menu) because we know they'll be made well. This little spot doesn't look like much, but it will fill you up and satisfy you, the way only good old Colombian comfort food can do.

This is the original Kokorico. In an strip shopping center off Grant Ave. This is another authentic mex restaurant. I ordered two chicken tacos, generous with the pollo. Garnished with tomato's, lettuce & celantro... comes with a side of refrios. Sit at the bar, there are maybe three or four tables. Not fancy, just authentic and good mex. Find Kokorico #2 on Route 28 near Bull Run Creek bridge.

Bandeja Paisa. Carne asada was huge and under all the other stuff so hard to see in this pic.

I don't even have a huge appetite, and the amount of food I received was still surprisingly small. The service was also disappointing from the moment I arrived. The restaurant was completely empty, yet no one greeted me or acknowledged me when I walked in. I eventually had to walk over to the bar area myself to ask about my pickup order. The woman working there looked confused that I was even asking and mumbled a response I could barely understand. I figured maybe she was busy, so I waited, but the entire experience became increasingly uncomfortable. I stood there awkwardly for about 10 minutes while the employees talked amongst themselves and kept looking over at me, yet no one updated me on my order or even spoke to me. The worst part was the food itself. The potatoes in the Papa a la Huancaína were cold and partially raw. I literally had to finish cooking them in the microwave at work. The empanada was decent, and the alfajor would have gotten better marks if it weren't for the small hair I found on it, but overall the experience was not worth the price. Unfortunately, I wouldn't ever come back. Revash has better portions, better prices, and overall much better food.

The chef knows what they are doing!! I ordered the passion fruit pisco sour, it was perfectly blended with right hit of liquor and tart passion fruit. Delicious drink I could drink over and over again. I ordered the shrimp soup- it was different but yummy and filling. These portions are NOT small!!! The plantains were perfectly ripe and fried. They also provide tostado or little popped and fried corn kernels for a crunchy snack while you wait for your meal. Everyone's order looked amazing, the charcoal chicken looked seasoned perfectly and just the right amount of crispy skin to juicy meat. They have sauce bottles of the white, green, and red sauces to self serve. And these sauces are liquid GOLD. The green sauce has a Smokey flavor to it and the red was so spicy!!! The next time I went- I ordered the plate of fried fish and seafood. I think half the ocean was on that plate. The calamari was so fresh and the fried exterior was light and crunchy! The pickled onion that came with that plate was so delicious and lemony!! The inside of the restaurant is cozy decorated with Peruvian murals and keepsakes. It's very much a hole in the wall and I've driven by many times without really knowing what it was....NEVER AGAIN!! Try this spot out and support, you will not regret it. I'm getting the lomo saltado next :)

I got a small side of fries and the Carne Asada Bowl lunch special which, according to the website, it comes with - Arepa, Rice, Beans, Plantains, Fajita Veggies, Pico de Gallo, Corn, Lettuce, & Cheese -- I got mine with the Nata sauce (Venezuelan Sour Cream), but also no rice or plantains. The food was absolutely excellent. I loved every bite of it. The portions were great, the meat was flavorful and tender. The fries were great - though a little under-salted and quick to go cold because of how thin they were. But no worries, I can understand why for both. I'd like to have seen a bit more cheese and a bigger side of sauce. Has at least 41 options for Gluten-free menu items. Has at least 7 options for vegans. Has at least 18 options for vegetarians.
