Don't have a surprise party here at Koi! I arranged with the hostess to have my husband's birthday party here and nothing worked out. We discussed the details on the phone a few times because I was not in this area and I thought it was understood. After all the weeks of time, effort and planning by me and those who assisted me to bring this together, I expected it to go smoothly. Not so. When we arrived, I walked in with 2 others, and my husband was out parking the car. I asked the hostess while I had a few minutes where the guests were waiting, and she told me they were exactly where we had discussed they should not be. She said they were in a room behind closed doors. I am picturing us walking up to double doors that pull outward and are a giveaway that there is a room full of people. I said that's not what I asked. Here she could have told me the closed doors looked like dividers, and she could have said I will push them open a little to honor our agreement and to not make it suspicious. That would have been fine. I found out the guests had been first hiding in there where they wouldn't have been seen by us as long as the doors weren't completely open. I didn't know where everyone was waiting when we spoke in the front, but she left and went to the back. I found out she said to our group of guests "she doesn't want you all in here, she wants you in this room", which I'm sure confused and/or annoyed them (and was later confirmed to me by friends and family), and was not true! What room? I then saw she had them all walking through to another back area which, unbelievably, was in full view of the entrance. Luckily my husband was seated in the front, and I saw them passing and standing, was able to block his view from seeing them all go by. We had to pretend to him we were waiting for a table while this was happening. And when he walked in from outside and joined us, she was approaching us and about to tell me she moved the group, and I had to gesture her from behind him to not say anything to ruin the surprise! She then brought us to what I found out was to be our separate room which had many seats and sections, left us standing there, then walked out. She left us to fend for ourselves and took off. I knew our guests were somewhere, but minutes went by and no one walked in. The three of us, who knew people were around, meanwhile are just standing there saying things like "where do we sit?" and "where did she go?" to cover. It was an awkward and embarrassing situation. Aside from that, the birthday cake and wine bottles were on a table directly in front of us about 12 feet away. I had to divert him while one of us who noticed stood quickly in front of it! I even left briefly to try to find her. The fact is she never coordinated it so the people would walk in together from somewhere to where we were standing, or, brought us in to wherever they all were so they could yell surprise! Eventually, the guests started trickling in a little at a time from what looked like a curtained narrow corridor to greet him because nobody on either side knew how we were meeting up. He began to figure it out, that it was a party and not four of us having dinner, as more people who were lined up showed their presence and approached him. I had wanted it to be an immediate surprise that was on video, not like that! I had arranged for people to record him, and his reaction when he saw all of them, and to always have that memory of it. He was truly surprised by it, too. Very disappointing. Also, when on the phone with them prior to that night, I asked and was told our server would be cutting and serving us his cake, but when I asked her in front of others to do so at the party, she said "no, you do." I was also told they would chill the white wine but they didn't until later. At the time of all these conversations I did not believe there was a communication problem, but perhaps there was. Also, some guests found the server unfriendly at times and impatient with us. Then, hosting it and being the last to walk out after paying the large bill, with a substantial preset tip added, no one acknowledged or offered an apology for botching it up and mishandling the event that had transpired. It's too bad, because I had been confident it would be a success up till the final moments of pulling it off, then everything went wrong. read more

I can't believe I haven't posted a review before because Koi is one of daughter and son-in-law's 'go to' dining out locations in Tom's River. We have enjoyed sushi and other dinner menu items. Honestly I would have given them four stars (With an actual rating just about 3 1/2.) but that was before going HIBACHI-Style at KOI! First, I don't need the show and have never been wowed by the food until my Koi experience. Our chef, Jacky, was great and funny! He realized that my 5 year old grandson was not into the experience and he focused on on the adults. He made sure we enjoyed all the traditional fun. A side note, it was really nice sharing the hibachi table with strangers! As the saki squirted out we cheered for each other and there in an evening around the stove we verified that humans can really enjoy each other's company as strangers. I will admit I was disappointed in getting clear soup, which everyone else loved. I missed whether or not I could have chosen Miso and I really love their Miso at KOI. The food was more than plentiful but more importantly it was delicious. Three of the group had scallops and they were so perfect... imagine the best scallops you have ever enjoyed because these were a match for the best! The diner getting steak gave a thumbs up and everyone was happy as take-home boxes were handed out. I had room for green tea ice cream ... We all kept thanking my son-in-law on the way home ... hibachi was his idea but next time it will be mine. read more

We went to Koi last night for my daughter's birthday. There were 8 of us so definitely a decent size group to have a good time. I was completely shocked by the lack of enthusiasm by the hibachi chef. He had little to no interaction with us and basically just stood there and cooked the food! You go to hibachi for fun and entertainment by the cook! We got zero from this guy. So if you are going with a group make sure you ask for someone who will be lively and fun. If not you might wind up with a dud. read more

Our order came out quickly. I ordered chicken and the hubs got steak and chicken. I got bonus shrimps in mine! Total win! Everything comes with a soup, salad, rice, noodles, and veggies. Kids mad reservations for Mother's Day at 5:30p so 7 of us. We sat in the large dining room and it's BYOB so that is good. We ordered appetizers which in hind sight was a winner, because after ordering our food didn't come out until almost 7pm, guess who was last on that... me, lol. The restaurant is nestled on the side of a golfing hole. Hence the clients are mainly golfers. Having side rooms available there is always some type of medical dinner happening there or the booths in the back. As far as sushi goes, this place is just ok. The fish was fresh as of that morning, but they are very fast to get you food. And so sometimes the quality is not there on the dishes. The rolls looked to be rushed and did not appear well put together. I can down 3 rolls, and I was done after 1. The prices are at the high end and so make it not worth it for the quality of the food. The restaurant is busy because of all the golfers and medical dinners. This makes it hard place for anyone else to get good service. The bar is busy with golfers and the servers are covering all the doctors and pharmacists from the local hospital. And the decor is from the 90s. Feel like you are in the Scarface movie... nice, but very dated. read more

Apparently there is a sister Koi in Brick. These restaurants serve Asian fusion food: Japanese, Chinese, and Thai. We dined at this one in Toms River early last evening. It is a BYOB and we brought a bottle of Saki, which our attentive server Jenny kept heating up. The ambiance is nice in the dining and hibachi rooms (lots of tables and seats) and make sure you check out the mini-museum to the right as you enter. I like the menu, which is basically a book with pictures of dishes. We started with an appetizer Pandora Lobster, $14, lobster salad and avocado wrapped with rice paper, deep fried. Tasty. Our entrees came with soup and salad. You can order hibachi at regular sit down tables too. For entrees we had Hibachi Scallop with two shrimp, vegetables, noodles, fried rice and ice cream, $30. and Phoenix Roast Duck with fried rice and bok Choi, $30. I've been here for both dine in (before Covid) and take out (after Covid). Quality is similar for both. Dumplings are definitely better eating in, as they were pretty cold by the time we got home. We got a sushi set and a couple of rolls the last time we did take out and the only thing I didn't like was that the tuna tasted a bit mediocre. A-MA-ZING!!! Only way to describe this hibachi!! Made reservations and arrived on time. There were 5 of us, they took our temperatures and we were escorted to our table. Our waitress greeted us, took drink orders and brought them right over. I'm a vegan so I do have to be careful when I order, I asked the waitress about vegan options and she knew the menu as if she wrote it. We all had a delicious salad and soup (no soup for me as none are vegan) I had eggplant with tofu in garlic sauce with a (huge) size of vegetable fried rice with no egg. Everyone else had steak hibachi, with different requests--add chicken, med well, well done, no mushrooms etc -- all orders were made as requested. My husband is allergic to shell fish, the waitress took note of this to left the chef know. I polled the group and the feedback is: delicious, the meat was tender, we will definitely be back. The portions are also large, I had 2 boxes of left overs that I can't wait to eat! I hate to say this with such a positive review, if I could make one recommendation....the menus are literally a book and some of the pages were stuck together. I recommend they clean the menus. We took my sister visiting from out of state. She ordered a Thai mango dish and I ordered a flounder dish. Both were delicious. My husband who isn't a fan enjoyed his beef dish. They only had green tea to drink for teas. I was only able eat half and enjoyed the rest next day. The appetizer of fried calamari was nothing great. Too chewy.
