My sister and I went over for an intervention in-person. Just walking up to the doorway you could smell the house the was not right. We barged in their home and found the family member critically ill, called 9-1-1 and had them hospitalized. Their dog, while skinny, was still alive but not in the best of health and completely unsocialized. San Diego Humane was called to help and a kind Humane Officer picked up the pup. (The dog spent two weeks at the shelter, was given medical treatment, training, better nourished and now placed with a foster family awaiting adoption.) So...imagine. A small 1-bedroom home where the dog had not been outside for months. Medical waste, garbage, rotten food everywhere. Piles of junk waist-high. A single bathroom that was broken who knows how long ago. There was no way my sister and I could clear this out. Based on the Yelp reviews, I decided to call Becki at Harmony Environmental. From my first phone call, Becki was compassionate and so helpful. I think I even broke down in tears on the phone, and she was a terrific listener. Dwayne came out for the initial assessment and was so compassionate too. He gently reminded us that these things happen sometimes and he was completely nonjudgmental and reassuring that things were going to be okay. He placed an air scrubber in the home so I could go inside and see what was salvageable. He helped me get in booties, gloves, and I had a K95 mask. Even with all this protection, the air quality was so bad I couldn't stay long. Harmony did an exceptional job clearing things out. They even saved things that they thought our family member would find important - family photos, some cash, jewelry, a yearbook, etc. They repackaged the cable box so we could give it back to Cox Cable (they had contacted us to repo it for nonpayment). Nearly everything in the home had to be removed and safely destroyed. What was left was cleaned exceptionally well. Complicating matters, the our family member is a renter, and Becki worked with the property manager to get approval to rip out the carpet and keep them apprised. If you're facing a similar dire life event, definitely call Becki and the Harmony Team. They are angels who will help set things right again in a compassionate, caring way.

This is for City of San Diego residents only, which you must prove upon entry. Also to drop off green clippings, shrubs and trees you will need to prove your residence. One of the few positive things of living in the city limits, like the free trash pickup. There are plans in motion to change this, I have heard. I happen to have occasional access to my friends business' dumpster, which saves me a lot of money. Not sure what they charge now for dumping here but the last time I paid it was $29 for a truckload but I think probably around 10 years ago. The mulch is very clean and of good quality to keep the weeds down. The compost is top notch, very nutrient rich. They ask you how much you plan on taking when you enter, maybe there's a limit to the amount or weight. I work in Kearny Mesa which is not too far from here and I'm surprised I don't get a whiff of this place occasionally. They have done a great job of controlling this, and I think now all the recycling being done has improved the landfill in general so it can last much longer for us. Then we'll have to figure out a new idea.

Now, I have been to the landfill with my husband a few times over the years, usually when we have furniture to get rid of that is too damaged to see or donate. Our most recent visit was about two weeks ago. Our old patio furniture was disintegrating, and we had discolored cushions to get rid of. We tried to figure our a less bothersome or costly way to get rid of it, but, alas, we ended up at the landfill. The first thing we noticed was that the price was increased to $69 for cars and pickups. I thought that was super expensive, a large increase from our previous visit. Anyway, the landfill, as you may imagine, it massive. The roads are mostly dirt roads once you get inside. They are hilyl, have speed bumps and ditches. They also wet the roads to keep the dust from being a problem, so we ended up driving through water. You have to watch the signs carefully to figure out where to go. Once we got to to the area to unload, it was unclear where to go. The signs directed us one way, but the other people were unloading on the other side of the mounds of trash. My husband opted to follow the others, which is lucky, as we otherwise would have gotten in the way of the work trucks. At first, the people directing us to unload were no help at all. We had to guess where to pull up. Later, one guy came by and told us that we could just drop the items at the end of the truck and didn't need to move it our into the pile. That was helpful, as we then unloaded very quickly. My husband had lamented that he often ends up with flat tires after going to this landfill. Sure enough, a few days later, he found a screw lodged in his tire. It really could have come from anyway, but that is a rough road and there is lots of junk near the unloading area. I would not recommend going unless you have a truck, as there is no way my car would have made it. All in all, going to the dump is never fun. However, sometimes you just have no other ways to get rid of stuff.

When I pulled up, the man made some gestures but I was waiting for him to ask for my proof of residence. He then told me to put the stuff down, which I did. He then said that they aren't allowed to get close to me, so I read between the lines and pushed everything closer to him. Then, silence. I said is that it? And, he said yes. So, I drove off. So, aside from the lack of communication from the staff member, everything else was pleasant. And, easy and free.
