After seeing all the lovely pictures of Kitchen Garden Cafe, I knew I had to visit. I'm a bit of a sucker for any venue that boasts locally sourced ingredients and a good, solid menu; so I knew I would like this place even before I ventured down the garden path to explore. And I mean that quite literally. From Kings Heath's infamous York Road, you must find the humble signage and walk through the the alley of greenery before you get to the garden area of the Cafe. The website calls it an "Oasis of calm" and you know what? It really is. With a feel of a conservatory in the garden rather than a restaurant; this place is rustic in all the right ways. I chose to sit inside the cafe (as the weather couldn't decide what it was doing) and sat by the large glass windows which look out onto the green garden area. I popped to the counter to order a filter coffee (a very reasonable £1.65), but they had run out at the time. "Not a problem", said my friendly server "I'll whip you up an Americano for the same price". Now that's service! The coffee was good too. Fragrant and not bitter, it certainly hit the spot! All of the staff I encountered during my visit were friendly, smiley and helpful. There was a lovely vibe in the venue and several different groups were enjoying a spot of food or a nice coffee whilst I was in there. Some people were (like me) clearly doing a spot of work, some people were taking the opportunity to have a good catch up with friends and some brave souls were sitting outside and celebrating a birthday. I didn't eat on this visit, but I intend to go back and give it a go at some point. The food that I saw looked delicious and defiantly warranted another trip to KH. I can't give this place 5 stars (as I haven't fully tried all that it has to offer), but if the menu is as good as it looks - it might get bumped up in the future. Just as a note, it does offer WiFi - but the connectivity wasn't strong (no biggie, I just tethered off my phone). I would love to give this place more stars as it's really lovely but the service here could do with a few tweaks! Beautiful setting and food but during my visit I never felt fully comfortable....I think this was because of it being a nice day and the staff being rushed off their feet.... I decided to go for the haloumi salad (summer body....think summer body) which was decent enough with a few strips of halumi over an alright salad. When it arrived I had not been given a knife and fork so in an absolute hunger started picking with my fingers....I would however like to point out that this was after a few times of asking for a fork.....let's face it in these desperate times you have to take desperate measures....After a few bore picks I think the waiter finally took pity on my feeble attempt to eat the salad and got us the cutlery we needed. The overall salad was good....not mindblowing and a slightly small portion for the money.... I know this was probably just a bad day for the cafe but I have to review on the experience I had this time round. If you are reading this thinking should I go to kitchen garden....you most definitely should. its an oasis of calm tucked away on a side street of Kings heath busy high street....but my advise ask about wait times before ordering....they seem to be getting more and more popular and this can slow down the service. Finally I get to review this lovely place. Been here about 2 weeks now and though I don't remember much of the interior, I do remember the food ( looked at my pics :D) So as always great to meet up with Lovely Victoria for a meal. This time was breakfast which happens to be my fav meal of the day. I'm a morning person. I was having little problem finding this place, I got on the road but couldn't see this place and turned out I walked passed it without realising it. I was expecting a shop right outside and it's kinda hidden. There is a sign but I was stupid to look up. After finding Vicky I had a look at menu. I was Impressed by the choices. It's a mix of cherry reds and Veg Out which is a good thing. The breakfast meal I had reminded me of cherry reds one. I had the veggie breakfast which is egg veggie sausage toast beans and mushrooms. Egg option is poached or fried I like veg out that they do scrambled if you want which is my preferred style. I thought they made their own stuff in house including sausages but I realised it's just quorn sausages which was a little disappointing. Or maybe I was expecting too much. I saw a lot of 'home made' food and products which lead me to believe everything is made inhouse or locally. Still had a nice meal and atmosphere is great. Seems popular . Looks like I'm the only one late in the game. Glad I got to try this place out and now I have more options for breakfast. I shall visit soon from to try their pancakes. It was back to Kitchen Garden Cafe today, this time for lunch with the mother. The menu had changed since my last daytime visit so it was nice to have a browse. However, as we were both 'being good' we kept it light with jacket potatoes. My mum had cheese and I went for the spicy avocado. Now, how much can I really about a baked potato?? It was well cooked. In an oven. And served on a plate..... To be fair, it was a good size and served with plenty if topping and a nice side salad. The avocado was basically spicy guacamole. A little too much lemon but certainly still edible. I also had an Americano which was a little strong for my tastes but would be great for the hard core coffee drinkers out there. The actual venue seems to have had a light face lift too with some new tables and a tidied up play area. As usual, the staff were friendly and efficient. read more

What a complete treat this was. We went for the spring fish menu (£40pp for 7 dishes). This was our first time visiting the Kitchen Garden Cafe and we were impressed overall. It feels like a little green haven away from the hustle of KH. I can see this being an ideal spot for brunch, which I guess is why it's so popular. Service was excellent - waiting staff were very friendly, helpful and attentive. The food was out of this world - delicious, creative, sometimes completely unique (the chawon mushi egg pot was like nothing I've ever had before, both texture and taste) and authentic. Special mention to the miso marinated cod - the best fish dish I can remember having for a very long time. And the mackerel sushi had a perfect smokiness to it. Plus the cherry blossom ice cream was exceptional. And the tempura was faultlessly light. In fact everything was stunning! Just go. read more

We stopped by for a spot of lunch here which was lovely as the sun was shining and it's a lovely setting to sit in the garden. We were told there was a 30 minute wait on food as it was very busy which we didn't mind as we were in no rush. When the food arrived we had no cuttlery and I asked for some mayo (no one likes a dry panini) well this is the only problem of the day as the cuttlery seemed to take as long as the food did to come. Other than that the food was nice and the settings were perfect. Also the homemade vegetables chips were delicious. read more

My only experience of Kitchen Garden Cafe was of an evening in December, when I attended a variety evening there consisting of storytelling, comedy, poetry, improv and music. This L-shapd venue was cosy and warm, with a quaint bar, very friendly staff and yummy coffee and cake. The Kitchen Garden is a pretty little hideaway restaurant/garden on York Road in Kings Heath, the entrance looks like the front of a small garden shop but once you wander in you see the pathway opens up into a mystical-looking garden and restaurant. In the summertime this really is the best place to dine in Kings Heath or Moseley, the combination of the leafy surroundings, good service and yummy food wins me over every time. In the winter the cosy country cottage-style decor inside makes you feel just as at home. I'm a big fan of the breakfast menu particularly their famous hash potato and smoked dry cured bacon. It's worth checking the website or Facebook page as they often have special events on such as music and comedy nights which are always a great atmosphere. The location is perfect as it's situated on the Camden-esque York Road, perfect for a break mid-shop or dinner before heading to the Hare & Hounds for a gig or drinks after. read more

One of those establishments that frustrates me. Good food, quirky and somewhat comfortable surroundings... but really slow service. Not bad service...... just really slow. Don't be in a hurry when you decide to eat dinner here. Onto the food. The food was good and somewhat inventive. We had humus, scallops, pork belly, risotto balls, chips, and sticky toffee pudding. When the food finally arrive, it was all cooked appropriately and was yummy. The sticky toffee pudding stood out and was actually a 'pudding', not of the cakey variety commonly served. It was gooey and stodgy, but devilishly good! I decided to give them 4-stars. This is based upon the quality of the food and the setting. Service is just the way it is, and probably unlikely to change! It's part of the charm. I will return, but with an emergency snack in my pocket! read more

This place is over rated. I have been there a few times (during the day) and have now just stopped going. The service is really unfriendly and inefficient and the food just isn't any good. I have had a light vegetarian breakfast here a few times and the serving is just too small and not particularly cheap (I expect less in a light version but not THAT much less) and not tasty either. When I branched out to have 'fish cakes' once for lunch, it was 'fish cake'. It is a shame as I would really like to love this place. I think they have set their stall too high and found that organic food is expensive so the servings have been on the small side. If they concentrated on serving quality food and employing friendly staff they might do better. read more

Love this place! Hidden away up a scruffy street and down an alley behind/within a tiny and eclectic garden centre, the Kitchen Garden is one of my fav places in Birmingham. Great range of bistroish kind of food. I especially like their French Toast and Full English Breakfasts. The menu changes through the day. Good coffee too. If you have kids the back room is well kitted out for youngsters. Or you can sit outside amongst the plants. They are a music venue on the evenings. read more

Is it a kitchen? Is it a garden? Is it a café? It's all three! Hurray! In fact, it's also a restaurant, gig venue and extremely well-stocked gardening and organic products shop. But the Kitchen Garden Café Restaurant Venue Shop was always going to be too much of a mouthful for a name... I had trouble finding this place when I'd first heard about the "Kitchen Shop Garden... Garden Kitchen Café... Kitchen Organic Café... Organic Kitchen Garden... thing" from various people about town in south Birmingham. The busy streets of Kings Heath are home to a number of tardis-like buildings, and this place is no exception. It's set back from the road, but once you've located the gates you're greeted by a lovely array of plants and garden ornaments in a tunnel that leads to a petite patio and the main café. It's like a little secret garden (/café/ kitchen/shop...), blooming in the middle of the grey concrete suburbs. As you would expect from so much natural, fresh loveliness, the menu is entirely seasonal, local and fairly-traded, as well as being almost completely organic. So it's a hit with the hippies of 'Heath, as well as yummy mummies, freelancers, families, and people who like cake - due to its child-friendliness, free wifi and awesome home-made cake. By freak of nature, I'm not actually a huge cake fan, personally, but this stuff has turned me. 10 out of 10 for cake. It should also be given 10 out of 10 for supporting local creativity: the walls are usually adorned with the work of local artists, there are regular gigs there, as well as story-telling evenings, comedy sets and other random artistic occurrences. And while we're on the subject of walls, the exposed brickwork interior gives it a warm, informal feeling that welcomes toddlers and geriatrics alike. (Actually, I've never seen a geriatric person in there. But I'm sure they'd love it if they went.) The only problem with everything being super-fresh, super-organic and super-ethical is that it does limit the menu - most notably the drinks menu - and can make some things more pricey than you'd expect. I went to the restaurant one evening with some family members, and we were all a bit thrown by the 'Small Plate Menu'. It basically means that their portions are bigger than tapas, but not full meal size, so you need to order 2 or 3 dishes for a proper meal. We'd only ordered one thing each and did think we were getting amazing value for money until the plates arrived and we realised how small they were. Delicious though - full compliments to the chef. And we did feel virtuous with our petite plates of ethical, seasonal, organic fare. I would just recommend reading the menu carefully! The service can be a bit slow, too, though always polite and helpful. All in all, I would definitely recommend a visit - if you're into all things organic, eco-friendly and local then this is right up your street. What a lovely little place! I've been meaning to dive into here for years and the opportunity arose to get breakfast here so that's what we did. It's lush! It's like having a wholesome cooked breakfast in someone's shed, except this person's shed is huge and their cooking is amazing. I opted for the Eggs Royale and her indoors had the proper breakfast; plus I went for a bowl of granola and she had a side of onion & potato hash. There's bottles and jugs of water for you to help youself from and you can sit where you want to and eye up the garden furniture that all of a sudden you really want to buy whilst you wait for your food. The Eggs Royale was done to absolute perfection; two massive, massive yolks ready to pop and dribble all over the salmon, hollandaise and muffins. A good helping of spinach in there too which was amazing. I was aiming to polish only half of it off (but that didn't seem to happen as I handed back an empty plate at the end) and then I moved onto the granola which didn't have enough yoghurt for my liking but a little pouring of left-over milk from Other Half's tea sorted that out. If you want a good breakfast and want to have it somewhere different, venture off the beaten track and head into this mini paradise to get your morning munchies fixed. read more

One of my favourite cafe's in Birmingham. It was the ultimate homely feel and the waiters are ever so friendly and understanding. The food took 10 minutes to get to us and I ordered a lasagne and an Eton mess. Both delectable and worth ordering again. Very happy with the food and service. read more

So this place was recommended to me by my sister who had been to the pop up restaurant they used to have here every once in a while, Paul and Jo's. I've not only been to that but also twice more for a regular lunch and a special stand up comedy event that they hosted. It has been such a nice place to go every single time and the food has been excellent both times. Paul and Jo's especially was such great value for money as we had 5 courses for £20 and each course was to a very high standard, I'm hoping that they have since stopped because they have found a regular place to set up. It's a garden centre slash cafe and the interior walls are lined with paintings from local artists which are interesting to look at while eating. I had the fish and chips when we went for lunch which was one of the best fish and chips I've ever had. Hand cut chips with skin on. Mouth watering. The comedy every we went to was....interesting. I've been to the one at jongulers which is brilliant and expected a similar experience here but it was very amateur. There was a hand full of people in the audience and the comics seemed like they had turned up to an open mic night without much practise. Some were funny but the majority weren't but it was still a lovely event just because it seemed so natural and relaxed. There was fumbles with the mic, people forgetting their lines. It was like a drunken family party. Another great thing about this place is that you can get to the sister bar next door, Fletchers, from inside for a wider range of drinks and cocktails. read more

Specialising in Organic food, this café, come deli, come... garden shop is a little known oasis, just off one of the back roads in Kings Heath. It's the perfect post Saturday night hangover cure, serving amazingly rich, generous roast beef or delicate yet deliciously filling leek and potato parcels. The looping samba music could do with a little kick but the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. Don't be put off by its jack of all trades label, the café is at the back of the shop and no one's going to be browsing the potted plants while you sip on your hemp beer. read more

The Kitchen Garden Cafe is a unique place with regular evening entertainment which is up close and personal. It offers a lovely selection of alcoholic beverages from less well know companies. They are eco-aware and child-friendly. It has a child's play area, just a simple mat and odd toys - but any mum of babies and toddlers knows how rare and invaluable that is. The staff are helpful in a bit hurried at times. They do a gorgeous selection of food to meet all tastes and have just introduced a new 'small plate' menu which reflects tastes around the world. The Kitchen Garden Cafe is set back off York road just off the high street. It has a huge array of plants and garden furniture for sale which forms the cafe's external eating area. To top it off there is a lovely little deli shop where you can get some really great, fresh produce; truffle oils, damson gin, authentic shropshire blue and smoked cheeses, organic teas etc. Even if you're not buying, it's great to have a gander! I opted for a black coffee whilst my dining buddy went for scrambled egg on a generous serving of buttery ciabatta toast topped with a large sheet of smoked salmon and chives. For £7.95 they certainly didn't scrimp on the salmon. He washed this down with a good old English breakfast tea. read more

This is indeed a wonderful location. I have enjoyed their hummus and the home made soup is wonderful but there it ends. The service is dreadful, dissorganised and chaotic, although they do smile as they muddle through. I tried their Sunday roast (December last year) and was disgusted. The beef was over cooked, dry as a bone and served in tiny quantities. The veg medly came late in a tiny bowl and was, well, quite simply un cooked. I like my veg al dente but his was rock hard caulifower and carrot, dry and unpleasant. Never again. read more

It's been a while since we sampled a new Sunday roast, so we decided to amble on over to Kings Heath to try out Kitchen Garden Cafe. You squeeze down an alleyway which makes you think you've stumbled into the garden section of B&Q, and there at the bottom is this lovely little, fairylight-bedecked cafe. There's a fair coffee, tea and cake selection, and an extensive breakfast/brunch/lunch menu which seemed to cater to most tastes. The Sunday Roasts at £12+ are a little expensive compared to the other options, but you do get an extremely generous portion - a little too generous as neither of us could finish. Maybe a "smaller plate" option could be introduced? The honey roasted vegetables and startlingly green broccoli were perfectly cooked, as was the red cabbage, and my gammon was succulent and fat-free. My husband's lamb chops were a little undercooked to his liking but still tasty. I'd certainly like to return to sample the brunch options as the service was friendly and efficient, and its a great venue tucked away from the charity shops and chains on the high street. read more

As an American visiting Birmingham, the Kitchen Garden Cafe is like a breath of fresh air. This lovely spot is tucked away in the back of the actual garden shop, making it feel like it's in an actual garden and the tables are all tucked into cozy nooks - inside and out. Good food and tea, and free wi-fi! I hope we can attend an evening event soon (there are comedy nights and concerts with various ticket prices), and the only reason it has four stars is the somewhat high prices - though it's all eco-friendly, so that's a bonus worth paying for. So glad to have been shown this great cafe by a Kings Heath local! read more

Getting to the Kitchen Garden Cafe involves picking your way through a small garden of potted plant, herbs and vegetables to find your way to the actual door of the restaurant with definitely has a rural feel. None of this would be particularly remarkable if the Cafe was situated in a countryside location. However, a couple of miles from Birmingham's sprawling concrete urban centre it feels delightfully out of place! If you're visiting on a sunny day, you'll definitely want to eat outside amongst the flowers. Kitchen Garden Cafe is a magnet for south Birmingham's middle class yummy mummies who flock there on a daily basis to gossip and discuss the topic of the day, and conveniently there's a kids area for those who need it. Service would be considered slow by some, and relaxed by others, but occasionally an order will go missing at busy times. It is also worth mentioning that they do a great line in vegetarian options. Oh, and there's a bring a book/leave a book scheme if you are short on reading material when you arrive. It's not cheap, but doesn't feel overpriced either. a charming little buisness. read more

We came for Sunday lunch on 25th October 2009. This is a great environment - quirky, interestingly decorated but the staff are a different matter! Dour, unsmiling and unwelcoming. I asked for horseradish sauce with my (lovely) roast beef - it arrived and was put at the other end of the table where my vegetarian companions were sitting! Was this done ironically?The bowl of seasonal vegetables came without a spoon and the waitress tried to clear plates before we had all finished. The attitude of the staff needs addressing as otherwise it is a great place. I would hesitate before coming again. Good friendly chef however who I complimented on the way out. read more

I found this place via Yelp and would probably never have discovered it otherwise. As a student in Edgbaston I'm unlikely to venture to Kings Heath unless for the live music at Hare & Hounds but I am definitely going to be making a return visit to this joint. It's got that kind of Central Perk atmosphere I've been searching for with mismatched wooden furniture, fairy lights, paintings and plenty of handwritten signs. Yet despite being tucked between its sister restaurant Fletchers and their little garden shop, they have a licensed bar as well as serving all-day breakfast and lunch till 3.30 (4 if you're lucky) which means they do a steady trade. Sadly, the prices are pretty high for me so it's unlikely to become my everyday haunt, but I look forward trying out the breakfast menu or maybe a speciality tea in this shabby-chic place with it's cafe-pub atmosphere and sunlight streaming through the windows that face the charming little courtyard. read more
