Coopers Restaurant provided an exceptional experience for our family's repass for 50+ guests on a…read moreFriday at noon. Initially, I resisted choosing Coopers due to its lack of aesthetic decor and worries about how it would compare to pricier local venues requiring steep deposits. However, turning to Coopers turned out to be the best decision we could have made for a celebration of life repass. The staff accommodated our diverse group seamlessly. Cheri and the servers delivered next-level service, expertly managing a large crowd and handling every drink order with absolute grace. They seated family and friends up on a riser while thoughtfully arranging floor seating for our mature guests in their 80s using walkers and wheelchairs. While the venue's interior is basic, the food was the true highlight for everyone from ages 1 to 100. The Meats: The fried chicken was seasoned to perfection, and the baked chicken was fall-off-the-bone tender. The smothered pork chops with onions were so tender they could be cut with a fork, and the hot wings were a massive hit that disappeared quickly. The peel-and-eat shrimp was well-seasoned, and the shrimp fried rice--though a unique spin with plenty of shrimp and vegetables--was just average. The only real miss was the fried fish (Tilapia or Whiting), which had a fishy smell that could be resolved by washing it after defrosting. Pig feet looked tender and well seasoned I was told. The Sides: The candied yams were the undisputed star of the side dishes with just the right amount of sugar and syrup. The mashed potatoes tasted genuinely homemade, and the cabbage was a hit for most with a nice flavor profile. The collard greens, green beans, and macaroni and cheese drew mixed reviews, leaning middle-of-the-road, while the salad bar and cold salads like potato and macaroni salad were solid additions. Vegan/Vegatrian - Salad bar (Please ask question on the other sides) Collard Greens and String Beans may have meat or meat broth. Pescatarian - Peel and eat shrimp and fried fish STANDING OVATION to the cooks in the back they need more recognition of being able to cook for a diverse age and taste buds. Please keep in mind these cooks are cooking for a large diverse crowd some patrons have food restrictions due to medical issues and cannot have highly seasoned and spicy foods. So, the cooks cannot be creative with the seasons like other restaurants or your home. A must try is the Chicken (Fried and Baked), Smothered Pork Chops, Turkey Wings(Sunday), Cabbage and Yams. These are solid staples everyday of the week. Coopers restuarant offered incredible value, avoiding the exorbitant hundreds or thousands of dollars charged by traditional catering halls/restuarants for uncertain headcounts, and ensured we didn't waste food. Most importantly, it gave us a spacious, welcoming environment to fellowship and honor a loved one together. If you need a accommodating venue with great food and reasonable pricing for a large group, seriously consider Coopers restuarant.

The vibe is whatever you want it to be, as some were dressed up & others were casual. We made reservations a few days ahead of time for a Friday night, but walks in were welcome & it's wasn't crowded when we arrived. When it comes to the parking situation, avoid the lot beside Still that's is labeled for the Mustard Seed Place. (We almost were towed but came back in the nick of time). We thought the open spaces without signs were open parking spots since the other spots were clearly labeled for Mustard Seed Place & Bon Secours. We entered the side door and were instantly transported into a basement speakeasy feeling restaurant. The host asked if we had reservations & then we were immediately seated. We enjoyed a small table lit candle and were surrounded by other couples without feeling too close or subtracting from the intimacy. We started with drinks: ~A Pineapple Bourbon Honey Sour - a well balanced drink that was tastefully sweet. ~Lavender 75 - I was initially cautious of gin, but the waitress assured me it was delicious & she was right. ~Old Fashioned - perfect! For Tapas we ordered: ~ Cornbread - cooked to absolute perfection, crispy on the outside, but moist & cake like on the inside. As a lavender girly, the lavender butter was delectable and subtle. I need inquire about buying some of that to go! ~Brussels (my FAV) - this was the largest plate and the Brussels were cooked to perfection and sauced in a tasty concoction. ~Bacon Wrapped Tots - served with 4 on a skewer. We initially were going to skip these because the name sounded like bacon and tater tots, but were pleasantly surprised that the tot was a homemade, cheesy, delicious latke like creation. (Another fav) ~Beef Filet - served with mashed potatoes and mustard seeds. This was also cooked perfectly & tasted delicious but was gone after we both shared a bite. All in all, this restaurant is a must visit, keeping in mind that the portions are intentionally smaller so you can share and try multiple items. The items do not come out in the sequence you order them, so I'm glad we ordered everything at once. The service was great and we look forward to visiting again. One small note, would be to fix the table legs. We ended up stuffing a napkin under a leg to keep it from wobbling. But that didn't finish our experience.

The fried rice was really good! Everything tasted fresh, and OMG, the house-made chili crunch was SO good! I'm a fan of Trader Joe's chili crunch, but Stockpot's is even better! I would honestly come back just for that. Lol! The service was great, too! Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and the ingredients in each dish. I always appreciate when the staff can answer questions and really know what they're serving. Overall, I enjoyed my lunch experience at Stockpot. Good food, great service, and that chili crunch definitely deserves its own shoutout! I'll be back to try something else on the menu.

The restaurant was very clean, and since it wasn't too busy, we were seated right away. The staff was welcoming and friendly. A few minutes after we placed our order, we were informed that they were out of breakfast potatoes, which was surprising since it was still before 10 a.m. This limited some of the breakfast options, so I ended up ordering the Selden Breakfast (a biscuit sandwich), a kid's chicken noodle soup, a biscuit on the side, and a lavender matcha. The sandwich was delicious, especially after adding the garlic aioli. My only complaint was that the biscuit wasn't served warm, and I think warming it would have elevated the sandwich. The biscuit we ordered on the side was also not warm. The lavender flavor in the matcha was enjoyable, but the drink itself missed the mark. The color and matcha flavor seemed off, and it wasn't mixed well--I could see clumps of matcha powder sitting in the ice. On a positive note, my nephew really enjoyed the chicken noodle soup. Overall, I was a bit underwhelmed by the experience, but there were enough positives that I'd be willing to come back and give it another try.

I have passed by this business on more than one occasion. So today I decided to stop and grab something to eat! I purchased the Philly Cheese Egg Rolls, they were ok. Service took forever to get. We waited over an hour just to receive drinks and an appetizer. I'm not saying this happened daily because this was my first time, but honestly just because you're having a private event in back there still should've been enough staff to service your regular customers or just shut the place down to cater unto them only. We ordered teriyaki chicken wings as our appetizer and they were okay. Nothing to call home about!!!! I ordered the shrimp and grits. The cajun sauce was alright. Again, nothing to call home about! The location is off of Airlines blvd making it convenient to my family being that we live within 10 minutes of it. Yes we could've left any time, but wanted to check the food out here. I'm a very patient person, but some places just don't know how to accommodate their customers accordingly. It's really not hard to do! Most definitely try it out for yourself. It's a one and done for us!

Since it was a weeknight, it wasn't too busy but there were still a good amount of (what seemed to be) regulars there. Music was loud, energy was high, and the bartenders were super nice. I love a good dive and this place definitely delivered. They have a solid food menu here. They're known for the burgers and they have quite a few that sounded really good, but I wasn't in the mood for anything too messy. I got a standard cheeseburger (I know, boring) but it was delicious! Fries are also solid here, nice and crispy and served piping hot. They had a good selection of beers and spirits here. I had no problem finding something I liked. A cool spot that I would definitely frequent if I lived in Norfolk! Worth a visit if you are in town.

Everything came out fresh, piping hot, and full of flavor. The food was definitely the highlight, and I would absolutely come back for it. I also ordered a cocktail, which was just okay. The customer service was friendly and attentive. The only downside was the seating. We tried multiple tables because each one was pretty wobbly, and even after moving, the other tables we tried had the same issue. The ambiance also wasn't really my style, but that comes down to personal preference. Overall, the delicious food and good service made it a worthwhile visit.

The ribs were...just okay, which is surprising because I've honestly never had ribs that were just okay. They brushed barbecue sauce on top, but the underside of the ribs was pretty dry. It felt a little stingy with the sauce. The collard greens weren't bad, but they were saltier than I prefer. I also would have loved a little vinegar, though I know that's a matter of personal taste. The mac and cheese looked amazing when it came out, but unfortunately it didn't live up to the appearance. It was underseasoned and lacked the rich, savory flavor I was expecting. This is a soul food restaurant, so I expected a mac and cheese that was bold, cheesy, and full of flavor. Instead, it tasted very mild--almost like it was seasoned for kids. The cornbread was also a miss for me. I'm honestly not sure what all the other reviews are raving about. It didn't really taste like traditional cornbread, but it also didn't have the sweet, cake-like texture that some restaurants go for. It kind of landed somewhere in between, and it just didn't work for me. I wouldn't order it again. Our server, Kiya, was friendly but only moderately attentive. One of my biggest dining pet peeves happened at the end of the meal: she asked if we wanted to-go boxes, brought them out, and then disappeared without bringing the check. If guests are asking for boxes, that's usually a pretty good sign they're ready to leave. Reading the room goes a long way. Overall, nothing was terrible, but nothing really stood out either. It was just a pretty average experience. I left feeling underwhelmed, especially given the reputation and the expectations that come with a soul food restaurant. I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to come back.
