Wound up stumbling into Fox Home Center while checking out different places. Honestly, Fox Home Center is probably not the best place to go if you are looking for the cheapest option. But, if you want quality items and, at least from what I experienced, a near "one stop shop" with good customer service, I would recommend Fox Home Center. Mark was great to work with. He answered all my questions and was honest with me. The vanity I originally wanted, he explained, would not arrive in time for our project. So, he helped me find a great alternative. We wound up buying a "display" mirror for a significant discount and we love it. Mark made sure the display was not damaged (a real challenge as this was a big mirror) with shipping. Something that made me trust Mark- to make sure I wasn't getting ripped off, on my own, I went to manufacturer (Moen) website. Turns out Mark was offering me the Moen "sale price", the lowest price that Moen would give if you worked with them directly. That made me feel pretty good, as I had not even asked Mark to give me a discount. When I asked to ship all this stuff to my house, there was no problem or fee. He kept it all together for me at the store as each time arrived, making it easy to keep it together. All items arrived and installed as described. To really top off the good customer service - the Toliet we ordered wouldn't fit (not Mark fault, because Contractors didn't measure until end of project). But, Mark took the Toliet back without hesitation and gave me a full refund. I plan on purchasing from them again in the future, and I am happy to support a local business.

My husband spent hours looking over all the wood one by one and had to return almost half of it back to them. A lot of the wood was warped, gray, black smudges, crook it and with midline cracks. The longer 16Ft plus wood pieces were the only ones that looked usable and in good shape. The rest was junk. The sales rep had said their wood quality was superior before I bought which was very misleading. The other problem was that when I tried to return the bad wood, they gave me a hard time. The sales rep came to my house to see the wood, then he tried to convince my husband that he could still use the wood by cutting and turning the pieces over so when nailing them down, the bad areas are not seen by our village inspector. This was unacceptableto me. The rep finally gave in and said that my husband has to help their driver load the wood back unto the truck or we will be charged a 20% restocking fee. This doesn't make any sense for my husband to load bad product they sold us, plus my husband was not available at their convenience. After I got very upset and asked to speak to a manager the rep said they would waive the fee. We ended up going to Home Depot for all the wood I was missing and was given a 6% discount on top of their already lower prices because of the large quantity we purchased. Home Depot's wood was superior all around. I should have purchased from them in the first place which would have saved me a lot money, time and above all stress.

Now if you are a contractor or a trades person you probably already know about GEM. But if you are…read morea homeowner or handy person who likes to try and fix things at home yourself, you should become acquainted with GEM. This is an electrical supply house that has a large showroom of fixtures and all things electrical, and a parts supply house tacked on to the north end. For the handy person, its the parts supply that shines. There seems to be fewer and fewer electrical supply places where a homeowner can go and find parts these days. I am only familiar with two really fine places on the south side: Helsel-Jepperson in Chicago Heights and GEM in Alsip. Now understand, there are many more supply houses around, but these two make homeowners (non-professionals) feel right at home. For the D-I-Y person, Lowes or Home Depot cannot carry everything you might need. Sometimes you need a specialty item ... for example, if you are repairing some older stuff ... and a place like GEM can save the day. I was fixing an old floor lamp where the socket was broken from years of use. It was not a regular socket, but one with a larger base opening ... called a mogul. The big box stores did not have it, but GEM took care of my need. I could have gone on Amazon and found it, but I didn't even know what it was called (GEM enlightened me: a porcelain 3-way turn knob mogul socket with hickey). I brought the broken part into GEM and they had one for me two days later. All to say, when you you need a part that is a bit out of the ordinary give GEM a try, and they can usually get one for you. They can also offer any advice on install that you might need. Recommended.
