After much debate, time and a few visits with hard sell larger roofing companies, we decided to go with Kirby Kerns to replace the complete roof and the soffits. His cost was comparable to what Nu-Look finally offered us on a last desperate attempt to gain our business, which led us to believe the cost to be reasonable. We chose upgraded shingles and really like to look. We also replaced our skylights to solar ones which are so much easier to use than manual ones and worth the extra cost. The whole project took a while because materials are rather short of supply due to COVID-19 issues at the manufacturers, but we are very satisfied with the work and would work with the Kirby Kerns team again. A big thank you to Scott Doke and his patience while we were making the big decisions! Time will tell, but the roof is on, looks great and adds so much to the curb appeal of our house. read more

We have depended on Kirby Kerns for cleaning out & maintaining the gutters for years now. I highly recommend them for honest professional work! read more

Gosh, such a bad experience with them several years ago. They had repaired a faulty corner of my rain gutter several times, and finally suggested replacing all the gutters. They gave me a quote and I said okay and gave them their 50% (?) deposit. Later, I got smart and decided to call around for other estimates, so I called Kirby Kerns to cancel. Kirby's daughter took my call and--I thought--said she would put it on hold & for me to call back to proceed. She claims that I agreed to postpone for just a few days and call back if I did NOT want to proceed. Naturally, the crew showed up on the scheduled day, but I was there and able to stop them. After a heated discussion with Kirby's daughter--backed up by one of their employes (surprise!) I got a little of my deposit refunded. Here's the kicker: when the owner of Action Sheet Metal came out to give my the estimate, he asked why I was planning to replace perfectly good gutters that were only a few years old!!! They just needed to be straightened and rehung in a couple of places. I felt that Kirby Kerns's employe took advantage of a new homeowner and led her to believe that her gutters were in need of (expensive) replacement instead of (cheap) repair. I would never deal with them again and I recommend that any phone conversations with them be carefully documented. And I heartily recommend Action Sheet Metal for all you rain gutter needs! read more

Using Kirby for a simple gutter cleaning and simple roof repair was a frustrating experience. I attribute that mainly to disjointed and poor customer service. I set an appointment for a reason - their employee showed up early when I wasn't home and did the work despite three calls telling them I would leave work to meet the guy. How was I supposed to verify they actually did the work contracted for? Further, there was debris all over my deck and patio door. While the company was concerned about that, I would use someone else next time who has better customer service and cleans up afterwards. read more

I've been using Kirby for like 20 years. First my parents did then I had them for my house. I've used them for some of my customers and they all have had great experience. I will continue to use them. I have to say I'm a little shocked at some other comments on here. But nobody or business is perfect. But I'm sure there is two stories to every complaint. You get for what you pay for. read more

I used Kirby Kerns to replace my roof a year ago. Kirby appears to know a lot about roofing and to be a straight shooter - I believe this because a few years ago he correctly identified a leak source that two other roofers couldn't, and fixed it for me at a reasonable price. The roof looks nice, it keeps the rain out, and the installation was done with gusto in half a day. I was completely happy with their service. read more

Roof didn't last! We had our roof replaced by Kirby Kerns just over ten years ago, with a 20 year warranty, and we were pleased at the time. We are getting a new roof now, in preparation for solar panels, and learned that 14 sheets of plywood must be replaced due to water damage! One corner was completely rotted through. I don't understand how this damage occurred, as we have had no extraordinary events that would have caused such damage. I attribute this to poor quality work by Kirby Kerns. I am deeply disappointed. Glad we found a different roofing company this time around. read more

Absolutely horrible experience. All seemed well until there were problems with the roof they installed. It turns out that the workers had not installed key pieces of infrastructure around the vent stacks. The crew came back out and completed the work in a timely manner, which we appreciated. The roof leaked again - the crew had not correctly installed one of the pieces they failed to install the first time. Then we took on a lot of water in our upstairs bathroom. Kirby came out, assessed the situation and decided that it was our fault for having improper insulation in the attic crawl space (for which there is no visual access to and, incidentally, which we personally installed when we remodeled the house the year prior. So, adequate insulation). The roof leaked again. Kirby comes back, starts punching holes in our ceiling with a screw driver, and insults/makes fun of my son (a child). After his failure to fix his work (and further damage to our home caused personally by him), we decided not to have anything at all to do with him again, regardless of the fact any work done by other contractors would void the warranty (what warranty?!). We later learned from two other roofers that our roof was installed incorrectly. It has been a horrible, emotionally fraught experience dealing with this person. Avoid at all costs. read more

We have used Kirby Kerns Contractor Inc. consistently over the past several years for numerous critical home improvement projects. These projects included new customized sliding glass doors, garage doors, decks and gutters to mention a few. This company, from the first call - to the estimate - to the finished work - is eminently trustworthy and does high quality work. Throughout the process all project issues are raised and thoroughly discussed. Not only did I not expect any surprises I also experienced none. I highly recommend Kirby Kerns Contractor Inc. and I will continue to use them. They really give a dam about you and your home. read more

The first experience with the KKC was with Kirby assessing our roof a day or two after a storm passed in August last year (AUG12) -- there were 3 or 4 shingles blown off (and found in the yard and gulley after the storm's passing). This was the second problem in this one area of roof to a 4 year old house and roof -- the first being fixed by the builder near the end of the one year warranty. Kirby explained to me after assessing the blown-off shingles and where the shingle came from, that they were installed with too much nailgun pressure as the nails were almost through the shingle. He returned the next day with a new pack of shingles matching what was installed and accomplished the patch in the area of the blown-off shingles. He was not too encouraging about the roofing as done by the builder or with the quality of the shingles. The roof was now done with the new patch....or so I thought. Hurricane Sandy created a new problem in this problem area of roof. Around midnight (on the night of the 29OCT12), there was a little water dripping from a ceiling vent in the second story - this was about the peak of the rain and wind. By 4:00 am, I awoke to a lot of dripping. Dripping from foyer's ceiling in a now visible drywall joint was lots of water, water that got soaked-up with a bunch of beach towels laid down on the wood stairs and wood floor on the first floor. Not much to do other than ride-out the remainder of the storm as it was passing. The dripping slowed-down and stopped for the next several hours. We had also lost power around 6 the previous evening, but firing-up the generator around 6 that morning helped until power being restored about noon. I called KKC around noon. It was still raining, but the worst was over for Sandy with us. KKC's Matt was at the house around 4 that afternoon accomplishing a repair/patch while it was raining lightly. He was able to assess where the water was coming in through the roof, into the attic area, and to the drywall ceiling. Back on the roof, he found that the shingles had not been installed correctly in that area's valley (that the shingles were cut at the valley where they should have started at the valley) - water being driven up the valley due to the wind, under shingles, finding its way to leak into the attic and to the drywall ceiling. He also noted that the shingles that had blown off had little "holding power" since they were nailed at too high of a pressure (where the nail almost being driven clean through the shingle). He did a patch with some shingles that I had from the pack that Kirby had brought earlier in August. After months of hassles with the insurance company, and with the builder, I gave up -- I needed to resolve this problem by getting the roof's problem area replaced. The deposit and signed proposal were sent in. The work was scheduled for the Friday the week after (05APR13). Last Friday as scheduled, the Kirby and the KKC crew were great in completely replacing this problem area of roof using good materials to ensure that I do not have another problem in this area of roof including the valley. I am quite pleased with the communication and professionalism shown by KKC -- Kirby, Amanda, and Matt last year as well as with the installation crew this past Friday. I am relieved about not having to worry about the roof anymore. Now, to get the damaged drywall taken care of (since the roof is not a problem anymore). read more

Kirby Kerns did a fantastic job with our new siding and trim. His crew worked efficiently and neatly. We are thrilled with the results. Kirby has previously done our skylights, roof, and gutters. Kirby is easy to work with and let us know in detail what would be involved in our project. I would highly recommend Kirby Kerns for siding and roofing needs. read more

Mr. Kerns came to my home to give me an estimate for a total roof replacement. He was very nice and seemed very knowledgeable...and even professional. Until later on I received a phone call from him...the message he left stated that "This is your estimate, but we can make this number anything you need it to be.{.sic..for your insurance company})....didn't want to go with a company that had no problem being dishonest with my insurance company. read more

Be aware of the first price they quote you, I needed a chimney cover because my homeowners association said the one I has was rusted and needed replacement, I contated Kirby Kerns Contractors, someone came to my house, quoted me $295.00 (around) and took measurements, I agreed they came back and changed the price to $1,000.00 and needed $400.00 upfront to manufacture the metal piece, I was under the gun, had no choice but to agree, granted they came with the new piece a day or 2 later and installed it. They left a very bad taste in my mouth, not trustworthy! read more

Unprofessional. Borderline harasser. Poor communication. I could go on. Mr. Kerns came and gave us a quote. He was acting all buddy-buddy, even talking friendly to the kids initially - but taht would soon change. I was getting pricing for a fireplace flute that was leaking and some siding repair. I thought the pricing was a tad high ($275), but it was an emergency and the siding repair would be done later (unspecified date). The employee showed up and was literally done within 15 minutes. Up and down. Later on the phone, I mentioned I was concerned with the time/rate of the project and that I was now reconsidering the the other project. Kerns didn't like this and he went OFF on a 30 minute diatribe about...blah blah blah - the perils of running a business. He challenged me to find a better quote. Complained about "not everyone will get a roof." Complained about built-in costs of housing material. Travel times. I have never quite seen anything like it. Several weeks later my wife got a call from the office that they were coming to finish the chimney job...well they wound up completing the siding job. By this point some financial issues had come up and my wife tried to work out with the office a payment schedule. Apparenetly Kerns didn't like this either. He called up my preganant wife and berated her over the phone until she couldn't take it anymore and hung up. When he shows up to give you a quote and is buddy-buddy, don't buy it. read more
