One of the worst stations to get stranded in ever!…read more Despite the very pretty city of Ely itself, the station is situated on a rather bleak patch of ground across several very busy traffic lanes, and the bus services to anywhere else are (in my unfortunate experience) sparse and badly signed. On finding myself at Ely station I couldn't make head nor tail of the bus timetable and sat waiting for a bus that didn't arrive for the best part of an hour. (When I jumped on the first bus that came along in sheer desparation, the driver was as helpful as could be, I should add). That being said, it probably isn't the fault of the station itself, per se. Although it's location feels really 'out in the sticks' despite the fact that's it's perfectly possibly to walk into town from there. It just needs better links, and better information outlets. If I'd landed there are night it would not have been fun!

It's a fabulous journey back into the past made all the more enjoyable as virtually all the staff on the trains and stations are volunteers who have a real passion for the days of steam. Throughout the year there are a number of 'specials' where people may travel whilst wearing period clothing, or have a day out with Thomas the Tank engine or go on the Santa Special which make the trips more memorable than the usual weekday trip that I had experienced. The only criticism I had really was the cost, which for one adult was £9.50 and a family ticket comprising of 2 adults and 2 children was £29, which I imagine might make some families think twice about doing the journey.

In the station tickets are available for purchase at machines or ticket windows, if you haven't purchased online in advance. There are bathrooms, waiting areas and a small M&S express store inside the station, most of the platforms are covered and there are plenty of signs indicating platform numbers and arriving trains. Generally speaking station looked pretty clean. Outside the station there are bike racks and also temporary standing space for cars waiting for passenger pick up though long term parking I believe is a bit of a walk. Also local buses have stops right down the street (mostly walking towards the left as you exit the station), and they have general routes on posted signs and arrival times (posted live on electric signs). For more details on more local stops and fare amounts (vary by bus line and route), best to do some Google research prior to getting on.

Literally, every seat is taken and there can end up being a few people standing in the vestibules. What's particularly annoying is when they keep stepping on the sensor that opens the sliding door. *slam* *slam* *slam*. For an hour. - So when the peak time trains are full, that's only standard class. There are three First class carriages as well and I have yet to see them even close to being utilized. If the price for First wasn't three times as much as Standard, I might consider it. Why not remove one of these and add a standard class? - Not only do they not have power at the seats (even in First), the arms on the chairs do not move. This makes getting into and out of the window seat a serious challenge involving balance and bending. - The actual ride is uncomfortable. The train sways from side to side often, plus there is a serious lurch every minute or two as the train speed changes and the carriage gets "bumped" or "yanked" by the carriage behind or in front. - Out of 16 trips on East Anglia between Liverpool Street and Norwich, four have been late. Two of those were more than 30 minutes late. One of them, over an hour late. For a two hour trip, that's out of hand. Last week, I made a purchase from the buffet car. The attendant was very polite and very helpful. But she didn't have a swipe machine for my credit card. She had to put it in one of those sliding imprint machines that runs over the card to get the numbers. I haven't seen one of those in ten years! Sadly, I have no choice but to continue riding East Anglia for the next few months, as my customer is in Norwich.

It take approximately 1hr 45 to reach London Liverpool Street. The station has a waiting room on each platform which are open from 05:45-20:00 Monday-Saturday with a later opening time on Sunday, There are self service ticket machines located by the bike shed on platform 1 and by the waiting room on platform 2. The second is covered so best used in poor weather. To cross the platforms customers must take the foot bridge over or in special circumstances such as the eldery or disabled my be escorted over a barrow crossing which exits in to the NCP managed car park.

Peterborough station doesn't offer that, so we drive the extra distance to Huntingdon for the railcard benefit and the cheaper parking. The bad: I've been here on a weekday and have been unable to find a parking spot, so, be warned. It's best to park on the opposite side of the station from the main ticket hall (platform 2), where fewer people park so you're more likely to find a spot. The entrance is somewhat hard to find unless you know where it is. Also, the ticket window seems to have odd hours. We were there at 4 or 5pm on a weekday and it was closed, which I thought was strange.

The platforms are linked via a high bridge:1,2,3 Two waiting rooms. One will be closed early. The only star is the lady behind the counter, who was very helpful rearranging train connections. Sleaford is known for being an unreliable route, such its best you always take into account to leave on an earlier train just to make sure you are getting your connection. I also recommend you to dress warm. The waiting rooms are not the warmest!

Outside of opening hours tickets can be purchased from self service ticket machines both of which are located under cover in the event of bad weather. Wheelchair access is available to each platform. There are level crossing barriers which drop when services approach blocking traffic and pedestrians from passing.
