It's right behind a used car lot on an Industrial Estate, just off a roundabout. Nice enough when…read moreyou walk in to Reception but when you head towards the rooms it smells musty and damp. The room is no frills. Water pressure is awful...barely enough to flush the toilet and not enough to get soap out of your hair when showering. There are snacks and bottled drinks set out on a room tray but chargeable if you use them. Also...Be advised. Even when you have paid for your room in full they ask for and additional £25 on your card as a deposit I queried this as the room is paid for but they said they cannot rent the room to us unless we do this.... it's for a bar tab or any extras they said...explains the tray of chargeable choices in your room. I was assured you get the £25 back on checkout or what you have left in credit. That didn't prove to be true. When we checked out they said it takes up to 14 days....you have to keep an eye out for it and possibly chase it up.Breakfast is 6:30 to 10:30 and bar is open 24 hours. Cutlery and dishes not clean...spoons in room were still sticky yuck....They called us shortly after we booked to confirm the room details.... we had paid for breakfast....he said they couldn't see that from Booking.com but he arranged for it and was very polite. I got the impression it is cheaper to book with the hotel directly as it was mentioned that its considered a B&B if you have it through them and it's an add on through booking com. Wifi is free but unprotected. It's inaccurate for the star rating. Breakfast is not worth what is charged. TV reception not great either.

The hotel is ideally situated if you're a wedding guest, as it's five minutes by car or a 20 minute walk - so if you can't get a taxi at the end of the night you don't have to trek too far. They have 20 bedrooms - 10 within 'The Vic' itself and a further 10 in Ancient House, located directly opposite. The Vic has a large restaurant and bar, spacious conservatory, outside terraces and drawing room (where paying guests have sole access to complimentary whiskies, ports and rums!). It's almost completely dog-friendly here - there were about six in the restaurant alone! We ended up having dinner here on the Friday night and then breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday. All of the food was delicious and locally sourced. Their wine list was also really good, though expect to pay a premium here. The staff were all terrific and you were made to feel right at home. Our room ('Joe's Stop') was spotlessly clean, the beds were comfy and my huge walk-in shower in the en suite was a definite highlight! The hotel has seriously enviable views over the Holkham National Nature Reserve. It's also very close to Holkham Beach. The location is just superb in every way. Tip: Breakfasts are included in the room rates. Tip: Check in is after 3pm on the day of arrival. Check out is 11am or earlier on the day of departure.

It's a great place serving outstanding food. It's more than a gastro-pub, more of a restaurant with a bar area attached the style is unusual a sort of colonial British Raj effect but it's done well and works. It's not cheap but if you're looking to splurge it's great for an evening meal out. If all you're looking for is a pint and some top-quality bar food it's the place to head for too. It's right opposite the Lady Anne's road that leads down to the stunning Holkham beach too a great place to stop off after a walk in this truly beautiful area.

The Duck Inn - The Duck Inn, Stanhoe

The Duck Inn was a bit of a chance find really, being slightly underwhelmed with our culinary…read moreoptions thus far on our short break, we found this place by the power of the internet, using the small window of opportunity when the Wi-Fi was actually strong enough! Set in the picturesque village of Stanhoe, the Duck Inn is a stone's throw from a large village pond, with resident swans and ducks. It has a largish gravelled car park, with ample spaces, and looks an impressive building from the outside. Inside was a well stocked bar, popular with the locals, and a variety of seating for dining, including a beer garden, and open air dining area covered by a more permanent roof. We had booked, which I would strongly advise you to do. We were seated in the main part of the Inn, which had lots of paintings by local artists adorning the walls, as well as beams punctuating the ceiling. This was more like it, although very busy, this was a great place to relax on a warm summer's evening. Complimentary crusty bread while we perused the menu was a good start, as were the staff, friendly and efficient at all times, even though later on, it really did get very busy. The menu whilst not huge, had an interesting range of dishes and daily specials. We opted to skip the starters, although the Scotch Quail Eggs sounded lovely. Lots of dishes on offer for the mains like fillet of beef, courgette, pea and mint risotto, but we opted for the Caesar Salad and the Salmon Risotto. Although the dishes took a little while to arrive, they were worth the wait, the Caesar Salad had a beautiful flavour, the anchovies and pancetta, gave the dish a real punch, and the chicken breast was beautifully cooked, probably the best Caesar Salad I have ever eaten. The Salmon Risotto, was equally impressive, a perfectly piece of salmon, on a dill and fennel risotto, dotted with meaty prawns. As good a pair of main courses as we've had in a long time! Of course a dessert is almost compulsory, the triple chocolate brownies, with salted caramel, were every bit as good as they sound. So impressed were we with the food and the surroundings, and realising they had accommodation we booked to stay over the next night, not cheap, but worth it. The room had a touch of elegance about it, a large bathroom, with a huge bath and a walk in shower. HDTV, good Wi-Fi (first time all holiday), tea and coffee making facilities and a large comfortable bed, which sadly was too short, odd! The main thing was though it was a relaxing space. We ate again in the restaurant the night we stayed, even busier on a Friday night, but a great atmosphere. We both went for Fish and Chips for main, with chunky chips and garden peas, with a side order of buttered greens. The Fish and Chips came in two sizes, my wife went for small (sensible choice), whilst I went for the large; shall we say a substantial portion! Just enough room for dessert, I had the Duck's Eton Mess, good but not great, and my wife had the rather wonderful Pecan and Treacle Tart. After a decent nights sleep, the breakfast was also impressive, fruit juices and cereals aplenty, but no fresh fruit. The cooked part of the breakfast was excellent though, wonderful flavour of the sausages, bacon and eggs, clearly locally sourced. All in all a great stay, one place I'm sure we'll gravitate back to, next time we are in Norfolk.
