I was craving halwa poori and found this one has exactly what I was looking for. It's one of the few spots that are open early in the day so a rear breakfast spot. The halwa poori comes with 3 pooris, Chaney, halwa, dahi, aloo, and achar. It was mouth watering delicious and I ate the entire thing with no regrets. I also got a chai and a roll which went great with it all. Only minus is they are cash only which is very expected in this neighborhood so come with some! read more

We wanted to have Halwa poori for breakfast during our trip to Chicago and the first result was Pak sweets; so we checked the hours and it said "9:00am-10:00pm" so we arrived around 10:15am, but they were closed. Normally I don't like to bad mouth one business in another business's review, but in this case I feel it necessary to point out the lack of professionalism from Pak sweets and make a point that they lost business because of this. Anyway, we saw King Sweets on the same block and sure enough they were open just like their hours stated they would be. We went in a found a very clean and organized restaurant. I asked "do you have Kashmiri Chai?" the man politely responded "of course." I knew Kashmiri chai was on the menu, but at some Desi restaurants an item merely being on the menu doesn't necessarily indicate availability. So then we asked "do you have Halwa Poori?" Again he responded "of course. We serve it everyday until 1:00pm." So we ordered Halwa poori, Kashmiri chai, regular chai and quite a bit of sweets. Everything was good, but the main reason I'm given 5 stars is because I was blown away by how friendly and professional the worker was. I'm not sure how the Yelp algorithm works, but this should definitely be above Pak sweets or any other competitor on Devon. read more

Gave a 4-star for the Kashmiri chai.Every time I go to this neighborhood i have this tea religiously even if i already had stuffed lot of biryani in my tummy. Not sure how they make it but it appears pink in color with almonds in it.There were times i used to sit talking to friends and sipping more than 3 chai's. Try the samosa and Kashmiri tea if you pass this place . There are sweets available but not that great.But you can try the paratha's . Forgot guys try the Lamb PAYA u will love it. We have to be completely honest about our experience so that either the restaurant fixes their mistakes and the next customers can be safe. Customer serves = 0 --- The old men were not interested in serving customers, they were not at all smiling, just looked annoyed and not interested. The were busy talking in punjabi. FOOD quality = 0 - After eating there, I felt sick and had diarrhea 1 hr later. I had their haleem and falooda. 1st when asked if they had haleem, the old guy was not sure so he went in and asked and then it took 15 min to bring it. Once I tasted it, it tasted like meat curry-salaan, it didn't taste anything like haleem. It didn't even look like haleem, but I still ate half of it as I paid for it. Then I tried the falooda, it was NOT falooda, they gave me kheer with thin white noodles. It was not at all like the regular falooda we usually eat. I don't recommend this place at all unless they work to improve their bad service. It seemed like they were serving whatever they can even if its bad or not what customers expect. We come here all the time for rasmalai and Kashmiri chai. The staff is always friendly and welcoming, more than other shops on Devon. Their rasmalai is the very best. We have tried many other ones and the texture, sweetness, and freshness is best here. The gulab jamun is okay. It's missing something but I don't know the ingredients well enough to specify. Usually there is a soft, sponginess but this doesn't have it. Their samosas are very good. Today I tried papri chaat. It had a lot of onion and was really soupy, but I liked it. Skip the daal. It had too much ghee. I had to pour it off. The biggest reason I enjoy coming is for the Kashmiri chai. You must wait for them to prepare it, but it is such a treat! read more

This place has been purchased back by the original owner who opened this shop about 6-7 years ago and food quality is back to its highest status. Sweet here are great but taste and quality is comparable by other few other sweet shops nearby. Food (dishes) are just OK. Never had anything that wowed me but never had anything that messed up my taste buds. Snacks and appetizers on the other hand are just amazing. Try one of their chats or samosas. And while you are there, also try their Kashmiri tea. Not same as back home but still the best in Chicago. On Saturdays and Sundays, they have Pakistani specialty breakfast Halwa Puri which is deep fried bread with a side of sweet that is made of semolina, potatoes, chick peas and pickle with yogurt chatni until 12:30/1:00PM. I'm an advocate of living the cafe life (Too much Hemingway, Fitzgerald and Parker in college I suppose.). I started hanging out in Chicago cafes like 3rd coast, pergolessi, 2 doors south in the 80's when I was a teenager. But when those little havens became casualties of the whole chain-cafe thing in the 90's, I migrated to Asian cafes because the quality is so much higher and they are so much more affordable than Starbucks and the like. (Plus the chains just can't do tea). King Sweets is one of those cafes I love to hang out in when I'm in the city. I love to sit and have tea and indulge in galub jamun stuffed with sweet cheese. Devon is really a great way to spend an evening and this place is an essential part of the equation. We'll do some spice shopping at the markets, eat dinner at Hema's, then walk down the street and have tea and cake for dessert at King. In the summer it's great just to sit and watch people on the streets. To wonder about their lives. Where they grew up and what it was like. What they dream of now. It's one of the things that makes me glad to be alive. read more

I have been eating here for at least 10 years now and I have probably eating most on their menu. I wouldn't say that everything on the menu is great but the food ranges from decent to somethings that are great. The reason to go here is for the Halwa Puri and their parathas. Their sweets are really good as well. I particularly enjoy getting their black pepper cashews and other dry snacks that are really well made and usually fresh. The other thing that is amazing and probably the best in the Chicago land found at this place is the Kashmiri chai. We were on a lookout for Indian sweets and what better than Devon street to satiate your craving for Indian sweets. We ordered a lot of different variety of sweets ,from their jalebi to kaju katli and they all were lacking something or the other in taste. Even though the guy mentioned it's freshly made when I asked him but I highly doubt his claim. Had to buy sweets for relatives and we were running out of time to go check out other sweet shops . I went here just for sweets and chaat so I can't speak to the main dinner and lunch selections they also offer. Nice selection of spicy snacks like Sev Puri as well as jelebis, carrot halwa and other sweets / mithaiyaan. The service was very good / American-style. If anyone knows of a better place for sweets I would love to hear about it. Right now this is the only one I know of that other people seem to like . . . I don't want to give this 5 stars yet because I think the sweets could have been a little better but they were still very good. After a mean craving for authentic Indian food, the fiance and I made a trip to King Sweets on Devon ave to enjoy the "best samosas in chicago" (according to a google search). It took awhile to get there and by the time we arrived, I was pretty much starving. We went to the counter to order and picked the following items: vegetable samosa, beef samosa, makhini chicken, and chicken naan. We were told to find a seat and they'd call my order soon. So we go and wait. And wait. And wait. It's now been twenty five minutes and the counter still hasn't called my order. At this point, I break down and order two pieces of fudge, thinking at least the boy behind the counter will give me this food now. I go back and scarf them down. And wait. And wait. It's been almost 40 minutes before they FINALLY call my order. Okay, granted, if I was at a sit-down restaurant, I might be annoyed at the long wait, but I'd also assume that it was normal. But when you order from a counter, you expect food soon...like within 10 minutes. Not 40 minutes. Okay but back to the food itself...absolutely delicious. The fiance HATES trying new things (totally a steak and potatoes only kinda guy), but he LOVED this food! I was kinda taken aback about how much he enjoyed the meal. The chicken naan was awesome- similar to regular naan but included a layer of juicy chicken and spices in the middle. The chicken mahkani was also very yummy- a bit spicy for me however the yogurt that came along with the order was able to calm down the spiciness. The samosas were the most disappointing part of the entire meal. When our order was finally called, the boy behind the counter said they didn't have any veggie samosas left. Now, when we ordered, they had plenty of HUGE, fresh looking samosas behind the counter. When they boy gave us ours, they were about 1/5 the size (they looked like tiny wontons) and tasted like they had been microwaved and then been sitting out for days. The fiance and I each took one bite and then didn't touch them again. The entire reason for making the trek to Devon Ave was samosas but the delicious meal made up for it. Overall, four stars. I would have given five starts but because of the slowness it took to make and because of the not-so-good samosas, you're going to get four starts King Sweets. read more

If you're told of Pakistani style breakfast, that is , halwa puri, cholay, fried potatoes, aloo paratha and regular paratha, you will never go wrong with this place. The Chai is really good too. I have come here a few time trying to get a fix for my Indian sweet tooth. The store is set up nice (and clean) and the selection is ample. Many of the sweets were not as fresh as I would have expected for a shop that everyone claims to be "the best" - if it was, it would be busy and thereby have a high turn around on fresh batches of sweets (right?) I only heard about this place from friends and being on Devon, have walked up and down this road for other options. Something that I would say is better for the price was Viceroy (sp?), its a little up the road, their selection is larger and the taste was different (in my opinion, better). read more

I come here whenever I'm craving for traditional Pakistani breakfast or snacks. Halwa Puri, Simple/Aloo(veggie) /Chicken Parathas, Bun Kabab, Club sandwich, Papri and Samosa chat, Rus Malai, Kajoo katli, Kashmiri tea and you name it, love it all depending on the mood and time. Staff is really friendly and sitting arrangements are ample, never too crowded esp if you are with family. Previously I have experienced some other places on Devon Ave with low hygiene standards, however King Sweets is clean, the missing star on my review is due to their choice of Disposable Plastic Dinnerware, which concerns me since it's an environmental disaster. read more

Gosh, a taste of real Pakistan! When I had their bun kabab for the first time in Ramadan, I felt like I was actually back in my Uni days in Islamabad! At first I thought it was maybe because of fasting all day, anything would taste good. But it gets better, I was back after Eid and had my order of Paratha roll custom made it was so super good, I have stopped making parathas at home :) heh! The sweets are exquisite, If you're down in Devon and want a delicious treat, try their Falooda, you can come back and report my review on yelp if you don't like it! I have never seen the need to step into Tahoora ever again, after trying this place. And the prices are incredilbe, I paid $6 for my custom made Paratha roll and a cup of steaming hot Pakistani Chai (real Pakistani chai, not the spice blend please)! Tell me that's not a deal. This place has some pretty awesome chaat options. Their breakfast plates are really good and their paratha is amazing! Not greasy at all! Super fresh and served HOT! Lassi is actually quite good as well but I much prefer homemade. I really love their samosa chaat but the last TWO times I've gone, they have been out of samosas. Idk what's going on, but it is a little frustrating considering Devon is a little out of the way and it's an ordeal to get there and back! Guess I'll have to start calling ahead! LOL. I also tried the papri chaat and pani puri and both were ok but not as good to me as the samosa chaat. In fact, that papri chaat was quite soupy but tasted ok. This place is close to one end of Devon but enough into Devon that parking is definitely tight and could take a few mins to find due to crowd and construction in the area. i love dessert. i love dessert so, so much. each time i go to a bakery, i want to buy one of each variety of cupcake, brownie, cupcake, cookie, and then go home to my bedroom, spread them on the floor around me, and take one tiny, dainty bite of each. this is kind of what i did at king sweets. if you are an indian sweets n00b, do as i did and fill a box with everything that looks delicious or interesting or unknown. the box is then priced by the pound, and as a result, you end with 10 or 12 miniature desserts that can be shared with friends (or hoarded for infinite numbers of greedy tiny bites). the box ended up being around 7 dollars and had a million different desserts in there. made of pistachio, carrot, coconut, all were wondrously sugarly and (like i had hoped) novel and unfamiliar. each bite was unexpected. what would it taste like? what would it feel like? what was it made of? i had tasted similar flavors before, but little did i know that indian desserts were so similar to the post-dinner treats my chinese mother indulges in, that their texture was so much like the fudge that we find at American state fairs. sometimes you eat to feel closer to your roots. other times, it's to alert yourself that there's always something new in the world you've never seen. read more

BOOOOO!!!! Have you ever paid $5 for a paratha roll simply because you got it to go? If I remember correctly, ghareeb nawaz, charges $2.50 n Tahoora/ Pak Sweets are about $3.50. I ordered 5 of them from king sweets after their change in ownership a few years back and I had to pay nearly $30 for JUST 5 paratha rolls! I used to go there pretty often for their bun kebab after Tahoora's quality dropped, also for their cold chicken boti mayo sandwiches n paratha rolls, and I think before the change in ownership--they kept their prices pretty much the same as Tahoora's. ANYWAY, so I asked the guy WTH?! Why so much? N he says oh because u got it to go-- I went so?!!! So he told me because we hav to do more work n we have to use aluminum foil and a bag!! OMG!!! I didn't want to be a jerk and say u can shove your parathas up yer u kno whr; instead I quietly paid and left but since then, they've lost business from me, my family and my friends! read more
