Since turning into a bar/restaurant, the quality of the food has plummeted. It used to be a family-friendly place, but now it's not. I swear I've been here before forgot about it and had deja vu a la Teena Marie.... In a shopping center in New Carrollton, can't say that it is easily seen from the road. Kinda off to the end of the strip. Parking is good for the area. Once inside, nothing to write home about. I take it that this is the kind of place that you come and get take out, not sit down. Various options from papusas, quesadillas amd the like. Pretty decent offerings and a slew of sides to choose from. On this date, I got the family deal; this consists of a whole blame chicken, two large sides, and four canned sodas. This is all for the price of 19.95 folks. I thought this was a pretty dope deal. Here in lies my problem....most of the sides looked as though they had been forgotten about. The yucca fries were looking lonely under that lamp as were those thick 'ol plantain slices. The mixed veggies were gone and the yams looked as though they had seen better days. The sides that I decided upon: rice/beans which by the by counted as TWO sides. Um, where they do that at? Who eats rice without thee black bean... ...anywho, I digress and I got the greens. The chicken was good, but was a little dry IMHO. But the addition of the green sauce, pico, and those yummo pickled (I think) onions helped it out immensly. The greens were a bit underseasoned for my liking and even with the green spice needed more hot sauce to pep them up. How can one mess up thee black rice and bean? This is not what Peruvian chicken is suppose to taste like, it shouldn't be overcooked and dry. Seasoning on the chicken was terribl. The green sauce had some kind of weird aftertaste like it had gone bad and the yellow sauce tasted mostly like mayo. The quesadilla was the worst of all, just looking at it in the box you wouldn't even want to give that to your dog. My boyfriend tried a bite and said the meat tasted like it had gone rancid. This was a complete waste of my time and money. I was very disappointed with my experience here. My first time here was over a year ago. The chicken was ok (I've tasted better) and at the time it wasn't many "charcoal cooking" style restaurants in this area. I went a few days ago with my family for Gelato. We remembered that last time we were here the Gelato was very good. We get there and the place wasn't crowded at all. Now usually I don't go into race when giving my reviews but considering my experience I have no choice but to do so. Having said that if you offend easily I suggest you stop reading my review RIGHT NOW Seated was a group of guys. I walk in with my family and immediately we kinda feel out of place but hey it's not the first (or last time) we will feel this way so we walk on over to the display where you can see all of the colorful Gelato. Behind the counter are 2 guys. My kids start to ask if they can taste certain types of Gelato. The guy quickly gives us a little spoon to taste and immediately turns around to the guys that were on the side who had just interrupted us from talking to him. He never say excuse me to us...i'll be right back NOTHING. He than starts to fix cups of ice cream for other folks while we are clearly standing here waiting for him to finish helping us. My kids are saying excuse me to get his attention so we can try other flavors, FINALLY he turns back around looks at us like he has a attitude. I ask for a taste of another type of Gelato. He gives it to me....after that I was disturbed. It was very clear that he showed favoritism for the group of guys instead of me and my family. SMH this is sad and I hated that my kids had to experience that but hey it taught them a lesson on how to NOT treat people. This place use to have great quality when it opened and the guys ran it. Yesterday I went there around 6:30-7:00 and two ladies were there. I ordered the usual 1/4 chicken and went to choose my sides (not knowing they were about to close) the other lady began to cut the lights off and I noticed all the spoons were in one big pan not rinsed or anything the one making my food picks one of those spoons up and said what side, I said can you rinse that spoon off please before you put that in my food, she changed spoons! I said no wash that before you put it in my food, she got mad and said ay yi yi! As if I was the problem. I said nevermind and walked out. I could've been allergic to something!!!!! Second time here within three years. I guess that says alot lol. Chicken is pretty good for it being the closest Charbroiled chicken spot around. Of course I've had better but it will do. I had half chicken, yuca and greens. Chicken was seasoned well, yuca was a tad but dry but good with the yellow sauce and the greens were good but better once I added sea salt. Why not Chicken del Rey? First, the King (as I call it) is very convenient to my work. That being said, I can count on King Pollo for a filling meal at a very reasonable price. Most of the time I get half a chicken with fried yucca.... yum! I especially like to dip the yucca in the yellow sauce. We go here often and always grab a whole chicken and 2-3 sides. Beans/rice combo is delicious and I like how they put both in the same takeout container so the beans can flavor the rice and vice versa. Yucca is real good as well. The only thing is that they're a bit stingy with their green and white sauces. Refuse to give more than 3-4 per FAMILY SIZE ORDER. WTF?! But i decided to try it out half way into my order being ready the owner or manager had a heated argument with a customer over a 3$ mischarge and that customers order the same chicken sub as i did and was being made about the same time when the owner/manager stormed to the cooked whispered something in his ear and the cook either replace the chicken with old chicken or put dish washer on it either way when i took a bite into it immediately spitted it out. Horrible taste, cold and only had 8 pieces of fries also the "combo" didn't come with a drink so i to run and get water to wash whatever i possibly consume. I was pleasantly surprised by this place! Based on where it is located, I was expecting it to be a tiny, dirty place, with possibly okay food. I went here in the first place because it was recommended by a friend and it is close to home. When I walked in, the place was absolutely clean and the staff was very kind and welcoming. They have quite a large space to dine in as well. The chicken is seasoned and cooked to perfection! They also have a huge selection of sides to choose from. I had a fajita - of Chipotle proportions for 1/2 the price - and some plaintains (maduros!). Good food although the fajita was sloppy. This place was bright inside, with MVN2 playing a mix of American and Mexican music videos. There is a certain charm about the cafeteria like tables and the quick service and cheap prices. Although the inside of this place was very clean and nice, it did not make up for the dry chicken and bad sides. I ordered white meat which at other pollo a la brasa / rotisserie chicken places is still juicy, but here was not. For the side, I got fries with rice and beans. I had wanted to get at least one "healthy" side but other than the salad (which was mostly just lettuce), all of the options were fried. The french fries tasted like the frozen oven-cooked ones you can buy at the store. The rice and beans were fine. The best part of the meal was the salsas, so that I could make the food more interesting. I feel bad giving a negative review because the cashiers were really nice and friendly (one was a little too friendly though - he asked for my number! muy coqueto, jaja). What an awesome place! In the back of the strip mall area with the advance auto. It was so clean and nice inside. They had many many sides to choose from. 1/4 chicken and two sides was $7.50. What a great deal! Chicken was tender and tasty. I I got yucca which was nice and crisp and a side of mixed veggies. Wonderful Latin American restaurant! Like many such other restaurants in the DC area, they specialize in chicken dishes, although they have some others. What really makes this place stand out is the wonderful spices and flavors that they add. The rotiserrie chicken is tenderly cooked with all sorts of spices that make me drool every time I think about them. I can't claim to be an expert on this subject. I've tried about six other well reviewed DC competitors and none hold a candle to this one. They also offer a chicken calderata (sort of a stew with veggies) that is also very very good. There are also generous heapings of succulent side dishes, including yam and yucca fries, as well as more standard ones like corn on the cob. If you have room left over, they have a nice assortment of gelato as well. The prices are great and you can stuff yourself for less than $10. The ambience is classic cafeteria style and is in a scummy looking strip mall so that's the down side of it (but you can order take-out). An important point is that there is another King Pollo listed in Yelp at Sterling VA that has rather poor reviews. I asked one of the staff if they were part of the same chain and he said no. So anyway, I'm not sure if they're related but certainly the food quality must be head and shoulders above the other one. Don't confuse them. Check it out!!! read more
