This was our choice for lunch on a recent trip to the Nashville area. I'm glad we tried it! This restaurant is inside a medium-sized grocery store. We didn't explore the grocery that much but it seemed like it had a nice balance of dry food goods, refrigerated items, and small objects, mostly either for cooking or the occasional gift. It was clean inside and being a grocery store had a good bit of parking outside. The restaurant is on the far right as you enter. We were greeted warmly and told to seat ourselves. Menus were delivered promptly. I ordered a Thai tea to drink. Hubs got the fried shrimp appetizer and we both chose noodles for lunch; he opted for pad see ew and I got drunken noodles. The restaurant was fairly busy but despite the crowdedness it still felt easy to have conversation with each other. Our food came out quickly but had clearly been cooked fresh. The Thai tea was the one thing that didn't hit at all. It had a very intense flavor that I couldn't quite place compared to all the other Thai teas I've had. Could just be this one is more traditional, lol. But it wasn't quite as sweet as I'm used to and it almost had a subtly salty vibe; I wouldn't get it again. That said, the cooked food items were quite good. The breading on the shrimp was incredibly crispy and even I liked them well enough at first; the flavor was light and the texture not rubbery. We did ultimately realize these shrimp had not been deveined, which is not our preference but I understand it's not a requirement to be able to eat them. The noodle dishes really shone, though. Hubs liked his pad see ew and we both thought my drunken noodles were even better. Lots of tender but still-crisp veggies in both. Strong and pleasantly aromatic basil flavor in mine. Large portion sizes. The noodles were cooked well and were pleasantly chewy. Mine was lightly spicy but nothing intense; I wound up adding more chili oil from the small container on the table. Service was a highlight throughout; the women working were very personable, got us to-go boxes, and were attentive to any other needs we had. First visit and I am a fan. We happened to be driving back to Nashville from Murfreesboro and decided to get something to eat. The decision came down to Hai Woon Dai, which is close, and King Market. As I wanted a few things from the market, King won the day. I have heard great things about the food here and it did not disappoint. The red curry was one of the best I ahve had and I even asked what coconut milk they used so I could get a can to make some Thai food at home. I will get back and try some Laotian dishes next time. The atmosphere is like a restaurant in a store. Oh, wait, it is a restaurant in a store. But I wasn't here for the ambiance. I was here for the food. The benefit of being in a market is you can grab Asian items for home, including some fruits and vegetables you won't find at your local Kroger. I included the menu, so you can see how reasonable the prices are. I will also state the portions are good for the price. As for the market, there is a nice selection of items from Asia or used in Asian dishes. I also found some interesting snack items, including versions of lays potato chips I have never seen in a US based grocery. Everything I've heard about this place is true! I'm so glad I finally got the chance to sit down and experience this place. Everything was authentic and delicious. I truly enjoyed every bite. We ordered a bunch of dishes to try to share with the whole family. Nothing beats papaya salad and wings with sticky rice! I had to try the Lao style sukiyaki and it did not disappoint. We also bought some food and groceries to go. They have a variety of things. This restaurant is located inside a market. You can either shop or eat or both. It is a very good option if you are looking for authentic Thai and Lao food that isn't watered down. This time we had the papaya salad combination, the fried pork spareribs, and the beef larb. They were all very good and delicious with a lot of flavor. The spareribs were fried perfectly since i request extra crispy and went really well with the papaya salad which had a nice kick to it. The beef larb was also very fresh and seasoned just right. Even though it is inside a grocery store the service is always good and they get the food out pretty quick. It's nice because you can shop for specialty items while you wait or after you eat. As a Laotian, I was excited to try King Market & Café for the first time, and it did not disappoint! Their Lao and Thai dishes feel authentic and flavorful. I ordered the char siu pork, which was tender and well-seasoned--definitely worth trying. The attached grocery section is a huge plus if you're looking for Asian ingredients; they have a solid selection that's hard to find elsewhere in Nashville. A couple of things to keep in mind: the place gets packed, and service can be slow at times--waiting for water, getting your order taken, and receiving food might take a while. This is a cafe inside of the King Market grocery store. I went at 1pm during the week and there was a wait, but they were working hard to get tables cleaned and everyone seated as quickly as they could! The staff is kind. The menu is pretty big but there are photos and descriptions to help you decide. I went with pad see ew with chicken and an order or egg rolls. They ended up coming out together. The egg rolls were tasty; the pad see ew was just okay. I was a bit disappointed in the taste, as it was bland. While waiting, I had a chance to shop for a few essentials, and the staff was very friendly and helpful throughout the process. I tried the Thom Ka soup, which was flavorful and filling, though the pork in it was unfortunately quite dry. I also ordered the beef Pad Thai, but it didn't live up to my expectations--it lacked creaminess, was bland, and the beef was dry as well. I was very impressed with the King Market's eatery. The Lao Thai Cafe is nestled in the back of the market and it's a gem. The server takes your order on a tablet and their entire process is quick and efficient. I always enjoy menus with pictures and there was a vast selection of choices. My iced coffee was very good and the coconut was refreshing and full of pulp. The peanut sauce that accompanied the vegetable appetizer was savory and made every bite enjoyable. I've been here multiple times and no matter what I get, the food is always delicious! I've tried their pad Thai, pad see ew, lad nah, mee krob, and pho(yes they have Viet dishes too). I think my favorite would have to be the lad nah. The noodles always come out with the perfect wok hei flavor and the gravy on top is never too salty and just reminds me of a home cooked meal. Can't go wrong with their pad thai as well which my husband absolutely loves! Prices are affordable at around $10 a dish and I usually have leftovers. They have a bright eating area and have photos of their dishes to familiarize guests. Stop by the market after for authentic ingredients and treats. I had dinner at King Market Cafe on Thursday, February 2, 2023 at 5 pm. I really wanted to rate King Market higher than my last review over 2 years ago, but I felt like my dining experiences have remained consistently average each time I have visited. I know it's a cafe and shouldn't be reviewed as a restaurant expecting restaurant-quality service, but I just thought the cafe-style service could still be improved. Half of the tables in the dining area were empty and it took a considerable time for us to place in order and they look like they were very short staffed. There were only 2 servers taking orders, running food, bussing tables, and taking payments at the same time - poor them! I've also consistently experienced longer wait times for the food to come out and that night was no exception. As far as food goes, it's very authentic and not Americanized. So you'll get the rustic Laotian/Thai home-y flavors. My only criticism is that the food can be quite heavy and filling from the MSG. The pad se ew was flavorful, but could use more cooking time to bring out the char flavor in the noodles. The noodles looked mushy too. The glass noodles in yum woon salad was very clumpy, but flavors were good. Shrimp was not as fresh. Overall, King Market is a good cheap place for authentic Laos/Thai food. I have never been here and had a bad experience. It's super casual and decently priced. I have also browsed the market a few times to purchase authentic Asian ingredients for dishes to make at home. Pad Malaysian is my go to here so if you are a fan of pork and spicy food, you have got to try this. The portions were huge and I ended up stuffed with enough saved for a meal the next day.
