Overpriced and arrogant. Bike tune-up cost $125. They left grease on the bike and returned the bike without a cap for one of the tires. The goofball college kid said they didn't have any extra caps which cost about 3 cents. Stay away. read more

I had the BEST experience at King Keyser! I learned from last year that rental lines at ski resorts can sometimes leave you waiting for 3 hours (not an experience I want to have again). So this year, I went to King Keyser to rent equipment for my family. What an incredible experience. Jim and his team took great care of us, making sure we had exactly what we needed! We also left with some incredible new winter boots and new snowpants, their inventory was great! When we got to the ski resort, we got our passes and were on our way at the slopes! This is a great place for Ski/Snowboard equipment. They have upper end inventory. Go here to be correctly fitted for your skis/snowboard/boots. They are not cheap, but they are much cheaper than buying on-line and having to buy something again because your on-line purchase does not fit or is the incorrect type of equipment. Unlike the overtly racist review by Bradley from Westmont, I have found the staff to be eager to help and eager to make sure that you have the correct type and fit for your purchase. King-Keyser offers bike services, including tune-ups and assembly. I bought a new bike online, and while I assembled most of it, there were a few parts for which I didn't have the right tools. I took it to King-Keyser. Not only did they put together the parts I could not, they inspected the entire thing, re-did a few parts I'd not done correctly, and the bike is perfect. They did all of this in an incredibly short time, and the cost was reasonable for all the work. I'm a fan! read more

great selection... I'm ready for snowboarding season at last!!! but Damn I hate the cold otherwise. This is the first year I have a complete ensemble and won't have to resort to renting anything. For all of you who are looking for a bargin, buy after the season like I did, I saved a bunch on the advice of the sales guys at KK's. They said if I don't HAVE TO HAVE IT, wait to get it. I know it's hard to imagine me waiting to buy anything but I did. I dealt with rented boots for one last season and now have the best boots made last year for a fraction of the cost. Don't get me wrong, I've over spent here too.... I'm not perfect. However, i feel a lot better about the jackets I've bought at a premium when I saved so much on the boots, that's all. read more

High end outdoor gear, mostly on the very expensive end. If you're going skiing though, do it. My son needed just the ski pants and they had a great selection of brands that would certainly last. He has an Obermeyer coat and the store had pants in Obermeyer and other brands that were a good color match. I also needed gloves for myself, and got a fine pair of Kombi for ~$60. The more dexterous model would have been a lot more money ($90). Nice people - great advice. read more

Regarding BICYCLE REPAIR, they've had several years to master procedures after the local store (Hartley's) closed. Fail. They're really not proficient with bike terminology. The store layout doesn't enable you to talk to the actual bike tech(s) for long, if they're there at all. I had a derailleur adjustment where they failed to index the lowest chainring. Brought the bike back in, explained what needed to be done. Picked it up over a week later, can't really test that sort of work in the store, peddling home discovered either no work had been done or they attempted and failed. My guess is the clerk who received the bike didn't write the "ticket" correctly. But who knows and who needs the grief? Overall, they're close by and for simple repairs or assembly, use King-Keyser. For anything more complex, go to Downer's Grove (which is more of a bicycling community). read more

What a great shop.. Many many years ago, my parents would buy all of my ski gear at King Keyser. I'm 52 now, and just took up skiing again after a 30 years. After 3 trips out to Colorado and renting my gear, I thought it would be best to finally get a pair of my own boots. I decided to drive by the location of King Keyser, and was very surprised to see that they were still there with the trademark yellow awning. I knew exactly what I wanted, and Jim was there to properly fit me, and answer all of my questions. Not only that, but their prices were fantastic. I hate to do this but this place has changed big time. I remember going here as a little girl and seeing the ski selection as being endless.. Now - overpriced clothing galore. Which is sad because that means one of two things: either people can't afford to ski or board anymore or the owner doesn't worry about inventory. Which I'm sure by the looks of it and location of this place people in that area think it's cute to own ski wear for the heck of it..... I'm sorry but $160 for a ski beenie is quite ridiculous and a jacket at $200 I can purchase on moosejaw or online cheaper won't cut it for me. The other down side is the sizes ... They don't carry much in the lines of sizing or brands- when I asked about a huge goggle brand (We are talking Olympians wear this and promote it) the woman looked at me dumb founded. Ummmm last time I checked this is a shop that that carries bulk apparel/accessories, right?- you are telling me there's no awareness on brands? Oakley, anon and smith are great but there are a couple other big ones out there that would fly off the shelves too. Also, an excuse that the season has ended (never even started here in Illinois yet) or that you don't carry a brand of something or even offer to order it pre-paid and then try the switch and bait sales tactics on another product doesn't work for the knowledgable ski/snowboard people. But all and all I guess this store works for the rich and famous wannabes... Obviously, the people with money have no clue what they are buying into - my 3 stars go to workers who didn't try to up sell me on junk I didn't need ! read more

Not many small town sporting goods stores left, but you'll find King Keyser in downtown Hinsdale. Merchandise brands start at Patagonia and North Face and go upscale from there. Remember, this is Hinsdale and there is a market for the high end. Selection is going to be limited compared to the box stores but you have the convenience and fantastic service. Also they carry brands that you won't find at Dick's. King Keyser also has a great boot rental program for the season that is ideal for kids who need a different size every year. read more

Have been here multiple times (due to convenient location) with each time being more disappointing. I have decided to not go back and definitely not recommend to family or friends. Unfortunately I have learned that the younger staff tend to be indifferent to customer satisfaction and have a very uncomfortable arrogance about them. One older gentlemen who works there, however, is pleasant and normal. I now prefer to drive farther to other ski shops for a better customer service experience. Love this little shop! The staff is super knowledgeable (especially with boot fitting - these guys know their stuff!). They carry lots of the apparel brands that I can't resist - Patagonia, Mountain Hardwear, Prana, Carve Designs - love love love. Anytime I need to update my ski equipment, this is where I head. Its worth the trip from the city! We use King Keyser primarily for its services. I've rented ski equipment from them for my self and my 10 year old son. This has been for weekends as well as season rentals. Prices are very reasonable and they ensure a good fit for the boots. They also have a boot club for kids that we utilize. Don't have to buy boots every year for a growing kid! Also very reasonably priced. Overall have always had a good experience with them and I am very glad they are there. read more

I went to KK to buy some new snowboarding boots last night. When I walked in I was greeted by a girl who I thought was a customer because she and all the employees were sitting in the boot fitting area. Turns out they were pricing long underwear and far to busy to help me select boots. I selected two pairs and asked them for 10's to try on. They didn't have either in stock so they brought out size 9's. I explained the reason I came was because I have 9.5's that are too small so they offered me 11.5's. Uhhhhh you're just not understanding me. I went over and picked out another pair of that they had in 10's. I told them I would purchase them but wanted to know what the return policy was because I wasn't 100% sold. The associate asked some hipster in the back what the return policy was and he came out with a cup of yogurt in his had to explain: If you wear them you can't return them. If you don't wear them you have 15 days to get a refund... After that you get another 15 days to get store credit otherwise you're out of luck. I probably wont return to KK unless I want to try something on and purchase it online or at another store. Terrible service and too expensive... read more
