The main difference between JHK and many other schools is that it teaches practical Taekwondo. Many…read moreschools focus primarily on the sporting aspect and stress speed over power and technique. This is great for scoring points in an olympic sparring match but fails miserably when called upon to defend yourself in a dark alley. JHK takes an analytical approach to the study of martial arts and teaches power and precision in addition to speed. Master Kim can claim a direct lineage to the early TKD masters, having been personally instructed by the founder of TKD, General Choi. I began my practice at JHK TKD in March of last year and feel like part of a family there. Classes are available several times per day, 6 days each week and my tuition allows me unlimited access. We're encouraged to treat the dojang as we would a second home, and I've always found the relaxed atmosphere to be welcoming and tolerant of all personalities, abilities, and walks of life. This is not your typical Kobra Kai, take-no-prisoners dojo, where muscular dudes walk around with their sleeves cut off. JHK is a place to lose some weight, learn to be good at something cool, and have a few laughs with new friends in the process.

Born and raised doing taekwondo in Korea, he was a multi-time Korean national sparring champion and 7th-degree black belt owner. Master Han is very patient and encouraging. As an adult with past injuries, Master Han is very mindful in adjusting the instructions based on our body, making sure we put health first and this is injury-free. He puts emphasis on a positive, safe and fun environment, every time I leave the class, I feel energized and uplifted, both physically and mentally. Master Han just recently moved to a new location in Lake City/Northgate area, and there are some amazing grand reopening promos. Honestly, if it weren't that Master is so generous and kind, I wouldn't go write this review right now - due to the grand reopening the class size are very small, it's almost like private classes with so much attention from Master Han. But no matter how small the class is, Master Han always gives us 200% of his attention, because he genuinely cares about each one of us.

Women should be aware of the basic self defense techniques and this class is the best way to start on this path. It's truly a great class because it's hands on, realistic self defense course that practice through common scenarios like wrist grabs, hair pulls, chokes, etc. The class focuses on physical techniques you can use to break free of an attacker and escaping. It is not about overtaking your attacker, but getting away and running to safety. You will learn and practice simple self defense techniques that don't require exceptional strength but will get you out of any situation. I now encourage all women I know to take this class as it is not only a very useful class but also a fun class.

The masters are great with young and old kids. Even if these young kids are shy the masters get through to them and build their confidence. I've seen students go to being shy and not caring about there kicks to being very social and kicking with grate form. And the masters don't do this by being rude or being aggressive which I think is a stereotype of "breaking them down and building them back up" as they say but instead focus on being kind and slowly getting them out of their shell and Encouraging them to try new things. And if they aren't ready then that's ok to them. It is a great place to learn and get out of your comfort zone to reach new goals.
