We were walking around Kukui Grove mall looking for a bite to eat, when we came across Kimchee No. 9. After looking at the menu we figured what the heck. The inside of this restaurant is dated. You can tell the booths have been here forever, the tables have built in grills for yakiniku style cooking but they do not offer this. The Kimchee they brought us was pretty good, but there was no other banchan which is something we have grown to know and love. That was a -1 star right there. I ordered the meat jun and my wife ordered the regular kalbi. The portions were decent for the price. The one and only person who was working disappeared for like 15mins when it was time for us to pay our bill, maybe it was break time? I'm going to have to look for other Korean food options in Kauai if there are any. read more

If I could give lower stars I would. The place was dirty. I was with my sister-in-law and she is Korean born and raised in Korea. She heard the woman being very rude to her mother in the kitchen (a serious no-no in Asian culture). That same woman took our order and was extremely mean... rude doesn't even suffice. The food was horrible. The Kimchee tasted like a bland version of tobasco and cabbage and the food made everyone sick. We had a combination meat entree, a noodle dish, shrimp tempura, and beef (we had a large group to feed). There was nothing Korean about this place and vaguely even Asian. I'm sure the tourists just keep this place open because if I were a local I would never come back. You could go to a Panda Express (which ranks lower on my list of Asian food) and you could get much cheaper and better food. read more

My hubby and I came here again and we ordered their Special for 2 with a side order of friend mandoo......Everything was good down to the bonchon. Make sure you eat their shrimp tempura because it's really good to eat it now then later. Will definitely be back and try something new. It was slow so we had our food within 15 minutes. Many people reviewed this location and gave it a low rating and commented on the poor service and atmosphere. We agree, however, we found the food was actually very good. On our most recent trip to Kauai, we went to the location twice. We had Kalbi, Fish Jun, BBQ Chicken and Meat Jun. The portions were generous and the food was good. Especially the Kalbi and Fish Jun. Yes, the employees do not appear to be happy to be there. We also noticed, we never saw anyone bus any of the tables/booths while we were there. On one occasion, I counted nine tables/booths that had dirty dishes on them and no one cleaned them off after the customers had left. One of the two restrooms were closed for repairs and the one that was open was not very clean. Luckily, the restaurant is in a shopping mall and there are other restrooms in the food court and in Macy's. If you want a good meal and can overlook the negatives mentioned by us and others, then you might find yourself pleasantly surprised with the food. There is a surcharge if you pay with a credit card, so pay with cash if you want to avoid the extra charge. read more

I love dining in and getting the miso soup, daikon, and kimchee before my entree. The daikon is my favorite, its like kimchee with a meatier texture. Personally not a fan of the meatjun, the oilyness of the egg was a bit to heavy and lacked a pleasing texture, but the beef was tender and well seasoned. The thing is, the cabbage kimchee was very tasty, and I wanted more of it, so when I asked for more kimchee, the waitress looked at me like, what? What's kimchee? I then had to point at my empty dish, and say, this stuff? Cabbage? Waitress finally understands and says ohhhhh, cabbage? Ok lady, the restaurant is called KIMCHEE No. 9. Please learn what kimchee is. We both had the lunch special, which is half hawaiian bbq chicken (2 giant pieces) and a large piece of meat jun, two scoops rice, a fried dumpling, and mac salad. It's enough meat for two meals, so make sure you grab a box along the wall to take your meat home. They take cards, and the tables deceivingly look like they used to be korean bbq. This is a sit down and order type of restaurant in the Kukui Grove Shopping Center, next to Rosses. You enter the restaurant and find your own table. Service is always prompt. H20 is automatic, but you can help yourself to the hot tea on the side. We like their hot tea, it supposed to be Corn Tea. Menu selection is pretty good. They give you small bowl of a type of broth soup. It arrives lukewarm. And a small bowl of Kim Chee. Food is good, we usually get their Chicken Katsu, but today I had their BBQ chicken. It was good. Sister had their Chicken Katsu, said it wasnt great because it wasnt the usual crispy. Apparently the guy said that their fryer was broken so they cook the katsu by frying pan? Dads Mahi Jun was good. Portion wise it's nice, comes with mac salad, pickled bean sprouts and cabbage. Lady brings the check. Not a Thank You at the end. The only reason this place is getting one star is the portion of food they give you! We had reservations on a Friday night for 6:30. There was a group of 4 people that arrived there one minute before us, so when the lady asked us to sit, it was 6:31. And I told her we had reservations for 7. She said, "you late. Friday, very busy." Mind you, we were waiting for the other 4 to show, but 3 of us were there. Yes, we should've all been there, but isn't that what reservations are for?! But they were literally down the road at the stop light waiting to turn. She put up a curtain between the 4 people that she sat right before us, told us to sit and that a table near us was going to open up soon so our other people could sit there! We weren't sitting together. We were trying to share food with each other and passing across the walk way where the cart is pushed through to clear the table. Yes, a Friday can be busy, but SERIOUSLY, don't give away the table after one minute. And then blame us for being behind a group of elderly couples. SUPER UNPROFESSIONAL. Salty Soup! Ordeedr Mandoo Soup, which was tasty enough if you like the savory flavor of msg. But I was only able to eat the mandoo because the soup was heavily salted. My husband ordered the Beef and Tofu soup, which was also tasty. But again, only the beef and tofu was eaten. Very salty. Ask them to hold the salt! Kimchee No. 9 is our "go to" restaurant when we're having dining decision issues. The food is consistent and the service is fast. Not the best meat jun that I've tasted but it comes in a close third. Prices are pretty reasonable for the portions. They have a lunch special for under $10 which consists of BBQ Chicken, beef mandoo, meat jun, vegetables and rice. For under $15 there is a dinner special with BBQ short ribs, meat jun, shrimp tempura (more tempura than shrimp), fried mandoo, veggies and rice. They also have a special for two at $30.95 that boasts Kalbi, BBQ Chicken, Chicken Katsu, Shrimp Tempura and Meat Jun. The portions are really generous on the regular plates but for under $10 you can order small portions which is still pretty filling. Definitely worth a try when you're walking through Kukui Grove Shopping Center in Lihue. read more

The food was pretty decent. The young waitress we had was very friendly. I had a combination barbecue chicken and barbecue beef plate. My wife had kook soo, which she said was pretty good. They are not as generous with the little vegetable dishes as they are at Kim Chee II in Honolulu, however. They had them all together in a dish, rather than giving separate dishes for each vegetable. Also, we had to move to another booth because the first one we sat in must have been the one reviewer Jim C mentioned. Gotta agree with Alex L....by far one of THE WORST Korean restaurants I've been to. Apparently their bbq chicken is not too bad but if I could grade them on their Fish Jun alone, it would be negative one star. Their meat jhun sauce actually is vinegar-based! HUH?!??! More like lumpia sauce than meat jhun sauce. Their vegetables were bad (and if you can't do basic Korean vegetables like namul, you're doomed!). Service is reprehensible. We were ignored our whole meal and when I waved to a waitress to get her attention, she looked and me and NEVER came over. Then, when I finally called her over, she didn't want to walk to our table to find out what we wanted. She stood at the table she was already at and asked us what we needed. Ok, this place is not what I expected. I thought it was Korean food- but I got something that was basically grease and noodles. The tables are like a foot away from the non-movable benches, and the cups had that "just-wiped with a dirty-rag" smell. This place has upped their game, as their kalbi is even better than before. But it is the improvements of the sides that are really noteworthy. All of the pickled vegetables taste like home made. I grew up on Kim Chee 2 in Kaimuki and also enjoy Kim Chee 7 in Aiea. So on our first family trip to Kauai, we just had to stop by at Kim Chee 9 to compare with its Oahu counterparts. I ordered the dinner special which consisted of two pieces of shrimp tempura, meat jun, big bone kalbi, and a mandoo. The mandoo here is not handmade, it's from a package, just so you know. The shrimp tempura was okay. The consistency of the batter was not light enough, but the taste was good. The kalbi was tender and was the best tasting part of the dish. My daughter had the magi katsu. The breading was a little hard, but she enjoyed it. My husband had the meat jun and he said it tasted fine. Gave it three stars because it tasted like we expected, but it was expensive as other reviewers mentioned. The seaweed soup they served in the beginning was super salty and they didn't refill the kimchee and daikon that they put in only one dish instead of separate dishes. The Oahu Kim Chee's always ask if we would like more kim chee.They also include a macaroni salad with the meal, but I didn't enjoy the taste of the macaroni salad. If you enjoy local style Korean food it's a good place to try. read more
