I've been a patient of Dr. Mitchell for about 7 years now, as long as I've lived in San Francisco and continue to sing her praises to all of my colleagues, friends and family members. I've had my fair share of dental challenges in the past, prior to living in SF and during my time in SF, and while I definitely don't enjoy getting inevitable dental work, I absolutely adore her and her team, and they make the experience so much better and these procedures much more tolerable. Most recently, I've been a pretty regular patient, since I got Invisalign and some cavities here and there (sad face), yet there's an aspect of me that looks forward to seeing the team there; they are so kind, caring, authentic and down-to-earth and it feels very comforting to go there. I appreciate Dr. Mitchell's bedside manner - she gives it to your straight with an action plan and it feels like she cares and has your best interest in mind. Also, worth noting that all of the dental assistants that have helped me have been amazing too. It's also worth sharing that a few years ago, I had a severe tooth ache that came out of nowhere...so excruciating that I could barely talk. I called the office, Dr. Mitchell and team saw me immediately that day and recommended the best endodontist (Dr. Alex Hanley, you're welcome readers ;) ) for an emergency root canal. Even under very painful and stressful circumstances, I honestly think it was the best experience I could have had, from the ASAP appointment, to the seamless transition to the endodontist including scheduling and to the aftercare. I'm so grateful to Dr. Mitchell and the team has taken phenomenal care of me over all these years. I look forward to continue being their forever-patient, even though I aspire to not be too much of a frequent regular ;). read more

My first visit to this office was perfect. Staff is efficient and very friendly and it was super easy to schedule time for the crown that my previous dentist had told me I needed. After a quick exam, Dr. Summerfelt explained the various options and suggested that a filling was going to be enough and we could always do a crown later if needed. A lot of dentists would have agreed with the previous dentist and done the crown as this is how they make money. I was in and out in less than one hour and saved $1,000+. :-) read more

Get a second opinion if you're recommended for anything more than your cleaning. I visited Kimberly when I first moved to SF for my regular 6 month cleaning. After reviewing X-rays, she referred me to an endodontist and then some other surgeon and I was told I needed to get my tooth extracted. I went straight back to Kimberly telling her this tooth has a long history and questioned why she wasn't asking for prior history or X-rays. She said she was only focusing on the present X-ray and that the tooth should be extracted. I went ahead and got a second opinion from another dentist. ~3 years later, I still have not had a tooth extraction and feel fine. read more

Dr. Mitchell was absolutely lovely and took her time with me. She was super friendly and seemed very competent, except for some technical computer trouble getting the xrays to display correctly. After doing my cleaning, she suggested several fillings, two immediately and some others in the future. For the two immediate fillings, her office quoted me total treatment fee is $566.00, with Delta Dental covering $118.40, so my portion would be $447.60. Because of this cost, I decided to get further treatments that she suggested filled by my old dentist - who was far away, which is why I had decided to try someone new in the first place. My old dentist - who I've had off and on for the past 10 years and have had nothing but great experiences with - took a look at the xrays, didn't think I needed any fillings at all, and touched up some spots that Dr. Mitchell had missed in the cleaning. I'm not really sure what to think, but I'd have to suggest getting a second opinion and price estimate for any treatments they propose here. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Mitchell's for thirteen years. She and her staff are professional, friendly and engaging, and do terrific, pain-free work. Every six months, we pick up where left off on our last conversation. They know their patients very well! The office uses phone, text and email for communication, so you never miss an appointment or a deal (I.e. discounted teeth whitening). My coworker referred me to Dr. Mitchell and I am so glad I came in! I generally love going to the dentist, and Dr. Mitchell was approachable and very professional. I have to commend the dental assistant (Asian lady), who was so friendly and knowledgeable. She did a great job scaling my teeth -- they looked so much whiter afterward. I also appreciate her for making the teeth x-ray process so quick and painless. Been visiting Dr Mitchell for years. I have no complaints. I received a couple small fillings years ago and they are all doing fine. I tried the whitening treatment once when they had a deal on it. The treatment itself was fine, but I wouldn't recommend whitening in general since it doesn't last that long if you drink coffee or tea. read more

I've been going to the office of Drs Mitchell and Summerfelt for almost 10 years. They've always provided quick, timely service and never tried to sell me a dental treatment I didn't need. Yesterday I needed to come early and Dr. Summerfelt stepped in to do my exam and my cleaning because a hygienist was still with the patient ahead of me. Great service that helped me get out fast. nickeled and dimed I am new to San Francisco. I have had my teeth cleaned every 3 months for years. I was referred to Dr. Mitchell. When I went there in January I mentioned to the dentist that the roof of my mouth and tongue were very sensitive. (I have since learned that it is referred to as burning mouth syndrome.) In January the dentist could not see anything abnormal. I went for a cleaning today and asked if in addition to the cleaning the dentist could take a quick look at my mouth because I still am bothered by the condition. (This review is not about Dr. Mitchell, who I think is wonderful, it's about Dr. Patricia Claeys-Schmidt.) It's been slightly more than 2 years since I've been to this office, but I am still not emotionally healed from it. I have been debating whether or not to write a review, (in fact it's a rare day that I write a negative review at all!) but I think it's important for others to read what happened. I had never minded going to the dentist before, and in fact enjoyed it. Getting a cavity filled was like getting my haircut. I went in, got it done, and moved on with my day. Now, the idea of going to the dentist for a cleaning fills me with so much anxiety. I haven't yet needed to go in to get another cavity filled, but I dread the day I do. It terrifies me. On January 6, 2015, I went to the dentist to get a cavity filled. The dentist injected several shots of Novocain into my gums. For 2 weeks after the filling, I was left with a half swollen, hard, and painful face. It hurt to eat, laugh, smile, talk (which was a near impossible challenge considering I'm a speech therapist, and as a contractor, I do not get paid when I don't work). It hurt to walk because it made my face throb, it hurt to sleep, and it was nearly impossible to bend down. I could not exercise, it was hard to brush my teeth, or even open my mouth, and I couldn't even kiss my husband. I checked in with the dentist a few times after it happened, because I didn't know what else to do. On the phone they told me they couldn't help me, but I came in anyway. When I came in they shoed me immediately out of the waiting room, so the other patients wouldn't see me. During one of those appointments, Dr. Claeys-Schmidt told me that it was probably because she administered too much novocain or too much in the same area, as she stated it was hard for her to tell how much she was really administering and where. During another one of those appointments, the dentist told me I needed to see an oral surgeon right away, and that there was one in the building. They rushed me out and the hygienist walked me to the oral surgeon's office. The receptionist at that office told me I needed to pay out of pocket right there on the spot in order to see the doctor, and that it was urgent. I did not feel it was me who should have had to pay for this, but instead my dentist. The dentist had also told me that after the cavity filling, I was left with trismus (or lockjaw). The trauma was caused because the whole procedure had been so forceful. And as a result of the lockjaw, I ended up cracking one of my other fillings. The idea of having to go back to the dentist to get it fixed filled me with absolute terror and anxiety. I wanted to just leave it as it was, but it was leaking, and therefore dangerous. A friend referred me to her very reliable, but very expensive, dentist. He didn't take my insurance, but I felt safer going to him. He patiently went over the procedure, to fix my cavity, many times. He assured me they would go slow and could stop anytime. I was offered valium several times (which I have never needed in my life!), but refused it. I wanted to feel pain if it happened, and to be aware the whole time. He fixed it up well, and after paying a big bill, I thought I was done. I thought that was the end of it. I am not free of the emotional trauma this caused. I continue to only see the dentist that fixed that leaked cavity. He does not accept my health insurance, so each time I go for a cleaning or x-rays, it costs me a few hundred dollars, but I am too scared to do anything else. I feel, for the rest of my life, I will now always be scared of going to the dentist. I feel I will always have to pay a premium price to make sure I am getting the proper care. One STAR is too much for this type of business based in the principle of ripping off the patient and not wanting to resolve the issue! In February this year I took my son to a dentist who we didn't trust his oral exam. Then, I found Dr. Mitchell on Yelp and decided to make an appointment for another oral exam. On February 20th, 2013 my son, had an appointment with Dr. Mitchell for a preventive diagnostic (intra oral exam). However, the bill of $150 was sent to my insurance under "Consultation (2nd opinion)," and they refused to pay. Later, I received the same bill from the insurance company stating that the payment was my responsibly. I promptly called my insurance company and explained the situation. They advised me to call Dr. Mitchell's office and request a new bill to be resend for the insurance company with "the right specification," meaning -- stating "preventive diagnostic/intra oral exam" on the bill. This way they would make the payment. That's when I called Dr. Mitchell's office (in March 2013) and requested a new bill, "with the right specification", to be resend for the insurance company. Her secretary agreed and said that she would take care of that. Then, in May 2013 I received a 'Statement of Account' from Dr. Mitchell's office charging me a balance of $150. I called her office again hoping to talk to the same person, but spoke to another secretary. I had to explain all over again. She seemed very confused and didn't know exactly what to do. She even told me that she was new in the office. That's when I asked her if I could talk to Dr. Mitchell. She asked for my phone number and told me that Dr. Mitchell would contact me. It has been three months now. Last month I got another "Statement of Account" in the mail from Dr. Mitchell's office, charging me the same amount of $150. I sent Dr. Mitchell an email explaining the whole situation, and expressing that I would appreciate very much if we could resolve this matter as soon as possible. I explained again that all her office needed to do was to bill my insurance with the right specification: "preventive diagnostic (intra oral exam)" just like the insurance company had requested back in May. However, Dr. Mitchell never called me back or sent me an email. I am tired of trying to resolve the issue. I've just paid the bill. I DO NOT recommend this dentist to anyone. Unless you would like to pay for bills that are not your responsibility, just because her accounting department doesn't know how to bill the insurance companies properly. read more

I don't have a fear of dentists per se but my gums have a fear of getting nicked. I was referred to Dr. Mitchell from a co-worker who did have a fear of dentists so I decided to give her a try. This was actually my second visit and I figured I should probably give her a review since I really like her office. However on my first visit when I was filling out the paperwork, I realized I lost my insurance card but since I had 2 co-workers already using her services they took the time to lookup my information for me. They do email and text reminders which is great for folks like me who constantly forget stuff. In fact this was a reschedule because when they called to confirm my last appointment, I had the wrong date listed on my calendar. They were easy going about setting up this new appointment rather than giving a disapproving tone because of my screwup. As far as the 2nd visit went, I was seen within a minute or 2 of arriving. The hygenist was friendly and asking about any dental concerns including one I brought up at the last visit, which shows me she actually reviewed my file before seeing me. I also inquired about a new nightguard and by the end of my cleaning they already had my insurance info on it and my total out of pocket cost should I choose to get one. BTW the hygenist works fast but never once did she nick my gums :) Everyone is warm, friendly and caring. Every step of the way they take the time to make sure you're comfortable and explain what they will be doing so you understand the process. Overall my experience shows me they value my time as much as theirs, they care about their patients as people, not just another file and I've never felt that they are trying to sell you something you don't need. read more

It was my first time meeting Dr. Mitchell today and I couldn't wait to get home and write a review about her. I hated dentists and had bad experiences with them. You know that icky feelings you have when you enter a dentist office and sit on a dentist chair waiting for that dreading treatment and the dentist to tell you that your teeth need tons and tons of treatment?! NO, NOT this time!! Also, you know what?! For the FIRST time in my dental experience, my dentist was on time in getting me into with my scheduled appointment!! I was impressed!!. Anyway, Dr. Mitchell is very nice to me. She made feel comfortable while cleaning my teeth herself while other dentists I have been to never did that. Dr. Mitchell is gentle, friendly, and down to earth. She is knowledgeable and appeared to know her stuff. Her staff is also nice. I felt like I have been going to her forever although it was my first time. I couldn't stop talking about her and my dental experience with her. I have scheduled 2 other appointments with Dr. Mitchell for another treatment, and I cannot wait for my teeth to get cleaned and better!! She is awesome! As good as dentist can get! read more

I was in SF for a year and had the best possible experience with Dr. Mitchell. I had a previous dentist who put a very deep filling in and it ended up touching the nerve. I feel like most dentists would have jumped to a root canal because I was in so much pain, but she took the time in "nursing" my tooth back to normal. She used some old school ginger filling remedy and soon enough, my tooth was feeling better. Although I ended up going about 3-4 times to check the progress of the tooth, she was so wonderful each time, explained what was happening and gave me all the possible scenarios of what might happen. If I could take her to Colorado with me I would. I highly recommend Dr. Mitchell to anyone interested in a quality dentist. read more

I made an appointment at this dentist for a cleaning. When I arrived, they wanted to do an exam (which costs extra). I agreed to the exam so I could get my teeth cleaned. After an hour exam, they told me that they didn't have time for my cleaning, but I should come back and get my cavities filled. They were booked out for over a month, so I made my appointment for the following month. My appointment was for a Tuesday afternoon, but I had a work commitment come up. I called the Friday before my appointment to cancel the appointment. This is PLENTY of notice, but they have still charged me a $100 cancelation fee. Find someone else! I called Dr. Mitchell's office on Thursday. They had a cancellation and gave me an appointment for a cleaning the following Wednesday (less than a week to wait!). I was thrilled. I think I made some sort of giddy noise like "Squeeee!". The staff member on the phone must have thought I was nuts. But she didn't treat me like I was crazy. She was friendly on the phone, and friendly in person. I got there and filled out the "new patient" forms. And Dr. Mitchell's assistant asked if it was OK if they contacted my previous dentist to get old xrays. That's right. You heard me correctly. They didn't try to do extra stuff that didn't need to be done just because my insurance would cover it (which it would have). In a time when we are having a health insurance crisis, and costs are CRAZY expensive because MDs and DDSs and DOs are doing unnecessary procedures, it is nice to meet someone who DIDN'T. Anyways, Dr Mitchell was really nice. And my teeth are squeeky clean. And she didn't ask to do unnecessary xrays. And the office is pretty (which isn't really that important, but doesn't hurt). read more

I've never necessarily dealt with a "bad dentist" per se, but it was at Dr. Mitchell's office that I had my very first cavity fillings and deep cleaning. I could not have asked for a better place to endure some otherwise nasty procedures. They offered to let me listen to music through earphones during the procedures. Afterward, they were concerned about how I'd get home (post Valium and anesthesia doses) even though my apartment is only 2 blocks away, so the hygienist insistently volunteered to escort me. I definitely wasn't expecting that. Later in the week, they even squeezed me in for a last minute filling shave since my filling was a bit higher than the rest of my teeth (which is difficult to judge while you're numb during the first appointment). No charge for a visit or anything either. They were also on my side when my insurance didn't do s-h-i-t for me. These guys are simply the best. read more

I've been meaning to write a review for so long, I can't believe I've forgotten to write it! I've had thousands of dollars worth of dental work done on my teeth in my life time and have been to many different dentists and have had mostly OK experiences, and a couple of horrendous ones. Dr. Mitchell is one of the two best dentists I have ever been to, on many levels. She is super professional, personable, knows her stuff, and doesn't recommend unnecessary work. It's also cool that she does the cleaning herself, so that she is really seeing what is going on with your teeth. They take insurance and do the billing! Found Dr. Mitchell on Yelp when I moved from Palo Alto up to the city a couple years ago and never looked back. The office is modest and modern all at once and she's sociable in the best sort of way. I'd mostly recommend her business to folks that find it easy to get to Union Square during the week, (maybe those who work nearby), because street parking is a non-option, though you can grab a paid garage spot and walk. I am new to the area and originally tried to make an appointment with Dr. Rivas (due to rave reviews on Yelp) but I needed to see a dentist soon so I ended up booking with Dr. Mitchell in the same office. Dr. Mitchell was incredibly sweet and did a fantastic job cleaning my teeth. She made sure I was comfortable throughout my visit. Probably the best clean I've had all around. I love that she cleans her patients teeth herself. Best of all, she didn't try and push any procedures or x-rays on me. I try not to give out too many five star ratings, but given I'm a nervous dental patient and how well this visit went - five stars is appropriate! No scolding for not having been to the dentist in a *very* long time (and yes, I deserved a scolding). No over-eagerness to do any procedures. Just a concerted effort to understand me as a patient, identify my needs, and get me the right treatments. The staff was also super nice, super patient - it really felt like a team effort and that everyone was on the same page with my dental care. What a fantastic dental experience!!! I arrived in the office a few minutes late and it was my very first time there, so I figured I would be kept waiting for a while. I was so pleasantly surprised that everything started right on time! YAY! Dr. Mitchell is awesome! I've been seeing Dr. Mitchell for a number of years, and it's thanks to her for spotting a long-standing issue that I was able to resolve and really have a much better time managing my teeth. Dr. Mitchell is very friendly and clearly cares a lot about her patients, and is always ready and available to answer any questions that you have. She's very friendly and is always genuinely interested in what you're up to. I've had to pop in for quick sessions day-of before, and the office is often able to accommodate them in a pinch. The staff, for the most part, takes great care to make sure that their patients are comfortable and feel good about their teeth. As a whole, though, I really always hated going to the dentist when I was younger, and Dr. Mitchell has always delivered a really pleasant and positive experience. I was happy with my experience here. I priced it out, and this is actually no more expensive than going to the dental school, and far more timely and pleasant, I'm sure. The front desk person is probably the friendliest in the business, and my dental-work was good and pleasant. They did accidentally double charge me - I got a bill in the mail for everything I'd already paid for. I called and left a message about it, but I didn't hear back. When I called they said they had fixed it... I kind of wish they had called me back when they found it, but they're just so darn friendly, I'm sure it was a simple oversight. Since original review I've been in to have some fillings replaced. First positive was that they ran the insurance well advance of the appointment, so they could tell me exactly how much I would be on the hook for. Nice not only to know that up front, but to be able to pay up front and not have to be billed later on. To the actual appointment, the procedure went great. Unlike previous dentists (in other towns) she waited sufficiently long for the Novocaine to set in before getting the drill out. Dr. Mitchell is by far and away the best dentist that I have ever had! Rather than dreading the dentist, I don't mind going at all. She is very friendly, and truly a high-class professional in her field. Not only is she excellent when it comes to routine dental maintenance/work, she is an amazing cosmetic dentist as well. After a couple of routine visits, I told her that I was always interested in veneers, but did not know much about them other than being expensive. After an exam, she thought I'd be a perfect candidate for veneers and suggested we try getting it approved by my insurance provider - and turns out it was! I just recently switched to Dr. Mitchell and couldn't be happier. She was thorough, gentle, informative, and on time for the appointment (which is a big plus in my book.) I just came back from my first visit. I'm extremely happy with the fact that for the first time in the last few years I've had dental insurance as an adult, there was no hard sell on deep cleanings, sealants, etc. They did a good job on cleaning my teeth and not hurting me (much!). I'm in braces so that makes things a bit more complicated, the fact they worked right through this professionally was a HUGE help. This entire office is warm and inviting. I had a great experience with Kimberly. She is knowledgable, attentive and SOOOOOOOOO personable. I've been to dentists on the East Coast (Miami, NY, NJ, NC) and she is by far the best I've ever had. You feel at ease around her and can ask her questions and get straight answers. She will not try to sell you on services that you don't need ( unlike some other dentists in SF!! ) The hygienist Marjan is excellent as well. This is the first cleaning in a long time that has been painless. Often they poke and prod and it's so uncomfortable. But you don't get that here-kudos to Marjan! I love Dr. Mitchell. She really is the best. She's so nice and calm and takes time to answer all of my questions. She also walks you through everything she's about to do and while she's working, she frequently "checks-in" with me to make sure I'm comfortable. The last time I was there (to have a cavity filled), while we were waiting for my mouth to go numb, she even went out to the waiting room, picked up a magazine, and brought it to me. She's so considerate. She really does have your interest at heart. Five years later I still love this office and Dr. Mitchell is the best. I think I have four friends & coworkers that now come here, and they all say the same. I recently had to have a retainer made and fitted and the whole experience was a breeze including the billing. YAY! I have been very impressed with the skill and attitude at this office. Dr. Mitchell and her colleagues are all very friendly, gentle and thorough. They are also happy to answer all your questions and explain insurance and costs simply and respectfully. I had a very pleasant cleaning and came back for a new filling - they explained what they were doing and allowed me to watch (if you are into that sort of thing). They were also concerned about my wisdom teeth (which have grown in and impacted during the 2-3 years I wasn't receiving dental care), and referred me to an office that has so far been very thorough, helpful and friendly. Dr. Mitchell's staff doesn't do anything without finding out the cost to you, and they even offered to refund me fully if it turned out I didn't need the new filling (but I did, as there was decay inside the tooth). Last year I had a filling pop off because the decay wasn't properly addressed and continued to progress under my filling. The best. My mouth is a work of art (11+ cavities, 2 root canals, 2 molar caps, i've had gum lengthening and braces...) and I ONLY trust Dr. Mitchell and her staff with my teeth. She also gives me great advice on how to better manage my soft teeth and their sensitivity to sugar and other bad foods. Would definitely recommend her knowledgable self and staff. read more
