I have a pretty complicated case - crossbite + front incisor implant. I had some crowns done by a different cosmetic dentist several years ago, but was never really happy with them. I decided to see Dr. Rabanus for a consultation after seeing his glowing reviews here. Consultation: The consultation was straightforward. He explained my case difficulties in a very straightforward, matter-of-fact manner. He felt confident he could dramatically improve my smile. He also suggested some additional lower veneers, which I agreed with. It was clear he knew what he was talking about, and showed me photos from other cases to give me additional confidence in my decision. I was IN. The Process: The procedures themselves were straightforward. First session was to get molds for temporaries. Second to remove the crowns and prep teeth for veneers. Third was to install the permanent crowns (had to do a minor do-over on one set - see below). Took about a month. Dr Rabanus also works weekends or late evenings too which is great for busy professionals like me. Results: The results? ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR. I am so happy with my smile now. As Austin powers said- "I got my mojo back"! Everything from the color to the shape is gorgeous. Just the right shade of white to be eye catching without being obvious (e.g. NOT fake Hollywood blinding white). I've got many - many - compliments on my smile. I have never met someone who is so particular abut the results of his work and so determined to ensure his work is EXACTLY what I want. As an example, he sent the crowns back to the lab because they were not the precise shape he wanted (I couldn't tell the difference, but he could.) Pros: - Extremely meticulous and conscientious - Confident and capable. Stays on top of the latest research and techniques (in addition to his Dental degree, he also has a PhD). - Provides clear options and ideas on type of restorative work to be done. I appreciate him sharing his thinking process and how he arrives at the treatment plan he recommends. - Never "pushes" treatment options. Final decision is always up to the Patient. Cons: - None I can think of. Personality wise, I am very type A, so I am very involved in, and always need to know lots of details about, the care and treatment plans. I came to Doctor Rabanus in May of 2022 with quite literally two decades worth of issues pertaining to my bite and long standing TMJ issues. Every step of the way, Dr. Rabanus was extremely thorough and detailed with his work. Before he even so much as looked into my mouth, he made sure to get a meticulous and detailed history of all of the work previous doctors and dentists had undergone with my teeth (and believe me, there was A LOT). When I first came to Dr. Rabanus, I was wearing dental orthotics nearly 24/7 in order to chew, talk and sleep. I was barely functional without them and had some manner of dental orthotic in my mouth at all times for close to 5 years at that point. It was extremely frustrating and difficult to manage, not to mention the psychological impact to my confidence having a piece of plastic that gave me a constant lisp, had to be removed and cleaned after eating etc. From a functional standpoint, my mouth was a wreck. I dealt with never ending muscle fatigue in my face, extending into my neck and shoulder. My TM joints were constantly feeling swollen and sore and it was very difficult to talk for long periods of time as well as chewing and eating being very precarious. Dr. Rabanus first course of action was to put me in a deprogrammer to get my overactive muscles and wonky bite to calm down and find a more restful position. I wore it religiously for the month or so that he needed me to so that he could prepare to take impressions and start the long process of crafting the wax-up of my new teeth. The deprogrammer was easy to wear and quite nice as it definitely helped relax my mouth. July through September was mostly a waiting game as I left the country for several weeks and had when I returned Dr. Rabanus was also scheduled to leave the country for several weeks. We scheduled the first half of temporaries to go in for October. I will fast forward to then... Come October and I was anxiously awaiting the temporaries, Dr. Rabanus scheduled multiple (I believe 4 hour) sessions for a Saturday and Sunday of that month. The process was far from easy (mostly due to my existing neck / jaw pain), but as soon as the temporaries were in, I already LOVED the look of my new teeth. Two weeks later and I was in the chair again to get the permanents placed, again, not an easy process for someone like me with an already sensitive mouth and jaw, but also not terrible. We kicked up the lidocaine a bit for these sessions I believe, I metabolize it pretty quickly. Fast forward to now, 9 months or so later: It's hard to explain just how much my confidence levels have sky rocketed with having a beautiful set of teeth. I smile ALL the time. In comparing photos from prior to the work of Doctor Rabanus and after, I just look so much happier 24/7. The two decades worth of TMJ problems caused me to develop many many bad habits in regards to how I bite, chew, swallow, etc. This will take time to regulate and retrain. I still have pretty "clicky" joints in my jaw. We also have yet to do work on the crowns for my molars, which I presume will make my bite a bit more "even" in the long run since my molars are relatively "flat" in comparison to my teeth with veneers placed in. I can't thank enough Dr Rabanus for transforming my smile! I had worn, discolored teeth and some bite problems. Permitting a bit of fun embellishment, I liken Dr. Rabanus's work to that of Johannes Brahms. Much like Brahms's mastery over many musical disciplines - symphonies, concerti, chamber music, piano music, and choral compositions - Dr. Rabanus is a master of many dentistry disciplines. As other reviewers have mentioned, upon meeting him during your first appointment and evaluation, you immediately get the sense that he's an absolute professional. After all, he is the only cosmetic dentist in San Francisco accredited by the AACD. However, what impressed me the most was Dr. Rabanus's skill in dealing with unexpected situations. During my first session in the chair, two of my damaged old fillings came loose and nearly crumbled away, stalling prep work for the temporary veneers. Read his website, looked promising. Showed up at his SF office in the morning as a walk-in. Asked the receptionist for an appointment, first thing she gave me was a form to fill out - after filling it half way, I asked when I could possibly see Dr. Rabanus (as I had a bit of a dental emergency, front tooth chipped pretty badly). She seemed surprised, and said that he rarely there, and that I should just call his number directly to setup a time. The form was to see a completely different Dr. that works from that office. The struggle with my teeth started many years ago. I always had crooked, gapped teeth and at a young age started developing cavities even with regular brushing and (occasional) flossing. As I got older, I started grinding my teeth in my sleep and ignored advice from multiple dentists over the years to sleep with a night guard. Over time the grinding looks its toll in a noticeable way and the enamel on my teeth was disappearing as well. I became very diligent about brushing and flossing multiple times daily, but continued having issues with cavities, yellowing, chips, and excessive wear. I went through two rounds of Invisilign which somehow made things worse since issues with the placement of my bite were never addressed, and I didn't wear a retainer for reasons I won't go into so my teeth weren't aligned for very long. Needless to say, I have always been self-conscious about them and worked hard to hide them when I smiled and when any pictures were being taken. In late 2017, I began considering trying another round of Invisilign to straighten them again along with something like bonding to deal with the gaps, but I started to feel like I needed to make a more serious investment in a longer-term solution. This was when I turned to Yelp and started searching for a cosmetic dentist who could walk me through my options. I spoke with a couple of different dentists who were basically willing to do whatever I asked for, but then found the listing for Dr. Rabanus and read through all of the five star reviews. Not only was I intrigued, but I became emotional at the thought of finally finding a dentist who could provide an informed recommendation and help me achieve a healthy smile I could be proud of. I made an appointment for a consultation and met with him in January, 2018. To jump right to the end, I ultimately got 20 veneers. This seemed extreme when the plan was first presented to me, but my teeth had deteriorated over many years and I knew a lot of work was needed. The roots were healthy and so were my gums so I didn't have to have any teeth totally removed or have other corrective work. I did some research to make sure veneers were the best route, and after more discussion with Dr. Rabanus felt confident that they were. He recommended I first have a "gum lift" (gingivectomy) to improve the look of my gum line since I had a very "gummy" smile and referred me to a periodontist. I had the gum lift done in March, then had to wait about six weeks for that to heal before we could proceed with the process for getting the veneers done. In the meantime, it was necessary to determine the appropriate placement for my bite since my teeth so I wore something called a deprogrammer for about four weeks. Once that was all done, the real work started and I ultimately ended up spending A LOT of time with Dr. Rabanus over the next several weeks as he worked diligently on providing me with an amazing smile. I don't think I need to go into how skilled and knowledgable Dr. Rabanus is. I think that's covered in many of the reviews here. What I will talk about is how dedicated he was to my case. He made me feel like I was his only patient by always being accessible and responsive, making appointments that were convenient for me, and spending countless hours with laser focus on making sure every tooth was dealt with in the best possible way. His precision and diligence was robot-like. I was very sensitive about how my bite felt and asked him to make a lot of tiny little adjustments, and he was more patient than any doctor or dentist has ever been with me. This was not an inexpensive endeavor and I had a lot of hesitation spending the amount of money I ultimately did for this work, but in the end it was worth it and I am thrilled with the outcome. I still check in with Dr. Rabanus from time to time and very recently reached out about a concern with one of the teeth. I decided to get veneers with Dr. Rabanus after being "on the fence" for years and having discussed the procedure with ~5 different doctors (some of whom also vouched for Dr. Rabanus as a leader in SF). I decided to go with him and ultimately am sharing this review as I am happy with the experience and would recommend: 1. Up front communication/Listening - Dr. Rabanus listens to your specific needs, takes the time to answer your questions in up front consultation (many of mine were related to process/technology), and even did a photoshop mock up of my potential smile post-op. Other doctors I talked to were not as patient or willing to go in-depth with me. Additional bonus is he is very flexible to your schedule and works nights/weekends. He will make you feel confident going in. 2. Quality - I have had the veneers for ~one year now and have had 0 "non-aesthetic" issues. No chips, no pain, no speech/breathing alteration, no bite issues, etc. Of course we all do this for cosmetics but can't take this aspect for granted. I have friends who have had pain/gum issues with other doctors. 3. Design/Aesthetics - Dr. Rabanus clearly has an eye and passion for design and knows how to create a beautiful smile. He does not just put a "cookie cutter" mold on you and will incorporate your feedback and make modifications to temporaries to get the exact look you want. That said, it is best to work with him having a decent idea of what you want (do your own studying), as he is hesitant (rightfully so) to answer questions on "what would look better" and ultimately forces you to make your own decisions. Dr. Rabanus did some major dental work for me 2 years ago. Major. It took weeks of prepping. I am a very difficult patient, I have an unreasonable fear of dentists and often cry and shake; I have a very small mouth and large teeth which are hard to reach because of the small mouth; my gums bleed a lot; my jaw comes out of the socket during long procedures and locks out. After reviewing the website, reading about his credentials and checking reviews on Dr. Rabanus from Yelp and other internet sites, I felt justified in taking the next step. I emailed Dr. Rabanus and he promptly responded with an appointment for a free consultation. He accommodated my work schedule by meeting me after hours at his office at 7pm. I found Dr. Rabanus to be a very warm, personable and affable man. The Doctor took a great deal of time consulting me and determining exactly what it was that I needed to have the teeth and smile I envisioned for myself. His entire approach to dentistry was very professional and relationship focused. Together we came up with a plan that would get me the teeth and smile that I wanted. The first week, we sat down and conducted a "smile analysis," this process included: taking x-rays, created molds and preparing my teeth. The following 2 weeks I wore "temporaries" to treat my teeth while the veneers were being created. During that period something happened. I chipped one of my temporary teeth while biting into a rib dinner. Dr. Rabanus warned me about eating these kinds of foods while I had my temporaries in but I could not resist. Consequently, I chipped a tooth. I texted Dr. Rabanus about my mishap and we setup an appointment the very next to have my tooth repaired (free of charge). My teeth used to be really bad - discolored by antibiotics, filled with dozens of old dark dental fillings, and worn out over time. I went through an orthodontic treatment about 6 years ago and bleached my teeth numerous times since then - they looked much better after these procedures but were still far from beautiful. Eventually I decided to consult a cosmetic dentist and contacted Dr. Rabanus. He has been very responsive and took a lot of time to discuss my options. I recall sitting for hours at a coffee shop in San Francisco, talking about what we wanted to achieve, looking at pictures, and discussing technical details. At some point the owners were closing the shop and kicked us out - we moved to another shop nearby and continued until I couldn't come up with any additional questions. Dr. Rabanus was amazingly patient in explaining all nuances I wanted to understand. My overriding goal was to have my teeth look absolutely natural, and as beautiful as possible. And I have been very demanding about it. We spent hours discussing the shape (contour) of the teeth. Dr. Rabanus might just just be a miracle worker. Before working with Dr. Rabanus, i could't tell you the last time I smile and showed my teeth. After searching for over a year to find a qualified cosmetic dentist specialist in the bay area, I consider myself truly fortunate to have found Dr. Rabanus. He is indeed a one of a kind individual, gifted in both the art and science of cosmetic dentistry. My search began after years of being dissatisfied with my Lumineer veneers applied by a dentist who did some cosmetic dentistry but who primarily practiced general dentistry. The appearance of my veneers were bulky and unnatural. I spent many years procrastinating around repairing a dead and darkening front tooth. And another with a chip and a few coffee stained composite fillings from last century. Many years of manufactured anxiety built in here...but that's just me! I have always been very aware of fake looking crowns- the ones that look like "Chiclets" gum pieces- big solid white blobs. I thought the fake thing would look worse than the dead thing, anyway- I finally became motivated to pull the trigger and get it done. I've done a bit of research over the years and knew, basically, I needed an artist who is a dentist. My regular dentist was ready to, as he put it "pop in a crown". I queried him a bit about my concerns- perfect color matching, natural appearance. He actually told me he thought I was too "particular" and at my age, 54- weren't my expectations a bit high? No I'm not exaggerating- he said this. His callousness was fascinating, anyway... He confided he has had problems with various labs- inconsistent quality work. He would be concerned about meeting my high expectations... So, I concluded, duh, that this just wasn't his thing. That's why one asks questions- thank God I did! As far as I'm concerned, I'm interviewing these people about their craft. Learning about them by how they approach me and their craft by how they position themselves in their field. Then go with my gut. I found Dr Rabanus routinely researching cosmetic dentists in the Bay Area. For starters he confidently made no mistake from the start who he is and what he does. And he's German- so it sounds impressive- just me again. He does high end cosmetic work. Assessing you and your smile holistically. In my case, he listened to me and gave a recommendation based on what he heard. We agreed on a scope of work which was more involved than what I had originally imagined. But based on our consultation, what he told me I could get, I really did want. Until then I didn't know what was possible. This wasn't "popping in a crown" This was a very big thing for me to do. I had a lot of second thoughts along the way and the story isn't complete if I don't include the part about me arriving for my first actual appointment in a cold sweat with cold feet intending to back out. Dr Rabanus handled me well and thoughtfully. He rather patiently talked me down and helped me come to my own conclusion. I elected to proceed. The work on my 4 center front teeth includes one crown on the dead guy and three veneers. They are straight and look so real it's stunning- and yes I am very "particular". He corrected my over bite as well which was the thing I didn't think possible. Also a couple very subtle tweaks- like elongating the incisors ever so slightly. Well- my smile is so nice now and I look great. It's all so subtle as well. I did not expect to get this sort of result nor had I actually anticipated the confidence boost. The other dentist was way wrong- 54 and it does matter- now more than ever! I'm very pleased. I even went out to the lab personally to have a "shade consultation" to get the color matched. So I am taking the time to write this because I did have a very good experience. But more over- if you are going to do this and you are a bit afraid as I was, it's important you get this right! At the age of 15yrs old I had a skate board accident, resulting in breaking three of my front teeth. Went to this dentist after researching some of his credentials. I had some serious bad teeth issues but I was a little hesitant as we've all seen some BAD dental work, right?! Dr. Rabanus did my veneer work: 8 teeth total. He was excellent about explaining exactly what the process would entail, how it would work, and allayed any concerns I had immediately and candidly. He is very to the point and tells it like it is. A good fit, personality-wise, and exactly what one would want in a cosmetic dentist. AND he works on weekends. Excellent. The process itself went very smoothly. Two consultation appointments, then two more in the chair to get temporaries and then the final product. I had a temp pop off a few days later, and he had me in his office that same day to get it replaced (replacement took 20 mins total from start to finish). Entire process was done in ~5 weeks, including two weeks out of town. The final product is stellar. The veneers look perfectly natural and beautiful, not at all fake like some of the horrible veneer jobs you can see online. Really excellent work. A lot of comments and compliments on them. A genius? An artist? An amazing and caring doctor? Dr Rabanus is all of that and beyond. I came to him with a darkened root canal on a front tooth that was semi-covered by a crown (the emphasis is on *semi*, not *covered*). I am a very, VERY particular patient. I probably have a degree in OCD, and I've had serious childhood dental trauma that impacted both my teeth and my self-esteem. I have put off cosmetic dentistry for many years, and it was way overdue. Having a poor smile impacts your life. Over the past 3 years I had appointments at four well known full time cosmetic dentists, one on the peninsula, two in the east bay, and then just this year Dr R in San Francisco. ( I realized the other 3 had not given me confidence in the process or outcome, they seemed to be high volume and not personal.) After my meetings with Dr R, I realized he was the right dentist and decided to get going. Several months later I am done with 12 veneers and caps and I made the right decision. Why? I saw Dr. Rabanus after I had a poor experience with another dentist. I have always had fairly nice teeth and a smile which has gotten me compliments throughout my adult life. When I was in college, after a night of too many drinks, I managed to fall and chip three of my front teeth. I had the teeth bonded at the time and they looked perfect at the time. Years later they began to get discolored and needed to be replaced. Several dentists suggested I get veneers rather than rebonding them, which are longer lasting and tend to enhance a smile even more. I took the bait and decided to move forward with the recommendation with my last dentist. BIG MISTAKE. She was clearly a general dentist who dabbled in cosmetic dentistry. We got so far as to prep the teeth (which required shaving down of the tooth) and she inserted temporary teeth. The whole experience was terrible (she removed some of my gumline without informing me or getting consent and she prepped one tooth unnecessarily into a crown - which requires removing much more of the tooth than necessary, and compromises the structure of the tooth - which caused severe pain and almost a need for a root canal - again without informing me or getting prior consent), and I panicked. While I still had my temporary teeth on, I hastily researched online for a reputable cosmetic dentist and found Dr. Rabanus. What a world of difference. I came to Dr Rabanus because over the years I had worn down my teeth from Bruxation or grinding my teeth at night. My teeth were worn down and painful and outright ugly. My dentist i had been seeing for years didn't know what to do, i was spending $4000 a year to keep up with my teeth and he was good but I was at a point where I needed to have a full makeover. I found Dr Rabanus and he was professional and clear regarding the seriousness of my condition and provided me with an approach. After some discussion we decided to a full teeth replacement with veneers and caps. The cost was about $60k and it took several months to complete but the results were absolutely amazing in terms of cosmetic and function. As far as personality, Dr. Rabanus is professional and passionate with his technique. Through the process there were several 8-10 hour sessions bet felt comfortable with him and his attention to detail and amiable personality. More importantly the results are amazing. The biggest issue is that I don't bruxate anymore(my teeth were so sore that i would grind them based on habit, now my teeth look like they did when i was 20(I'm now 40). I can now sleep better as I don't wake up in pain and they look amazing--natural and perfect. It took some time getting used to, and the process is not painful so to speak but does take some getting used to. After 4 months or so my teeth felt natural and now after a year they are perfect. If you are thinking of this procedure I would recommend Dr. Rabanus 1000%. He is intelligent and has a passion for cosmetic/restorative dentistry which you don't usually encounter. i had been miserable with my teeth all my life. while young and stupid and living in buenos aires, i decided to check into getting veneers to cover up the nasty suckers. my the cost of doing this sort of operation was much more affordable than in the states. i decided to go against my intuition and get the veneers done.
