Dr. Stumpel is the creme de la creme of dentistry. He has been my dentist for 20 years and I never considered anyone else. He is brilliant, funny, professional and amazing. Most of his staff has worked in the office for almost as long as I've been a patient and they are all great. Considering not many people rate going to the dentist as one of their favorite things to do, Dr. Stumpel and his staff make it as painless and enjoyable as possible. I went from having average dental hygiene with the expected results of yellowing teeth and gum issues to a shiny white smile with healthy gums, in part because after years of painful cleanings I finally decided to do my part and started flossing every night but also because the hygienists coached me in a positive way how to better take care of my teeth. I also did teeth bleaching before it was a thing in the late 90's soon after I became a patient and people complimented me on my amazing smile for YEARS after. It literally lasted that long! If you want the best dentist in SF, go see Dr. Stumpel. read more

I just saw Dr. Stumpel because I was worried about the fit of my night guard, and more specifically, some muscular pain in my cheeks when talking. Not only was he warm and welcoming but he gave me a detailed explanation about how the brain has to adjust to my wearing the night guard every day. Now, that explanation was so encouraging and motivated me to be patient getting used to wearing the night guard all the time. So glad Dr. Stumpel is such a superb dentist! read more

Even though he is many hours away from where I live, I hope Dr. Stumpel will become my regular dentist. It's worth the drive and motel bill. A friend tired of hearing me whine in pain, so she referred me. I HAD SEEN THREE DENTISTS AND TWO ORAL SURGEONS before seeing DR. Stumpel. He very quickly apprehended what the other dentists did not, and took steps to correct what had been overlooked. I left his office feeling TREMENDOUS pain relief and hope. He explains everything, is quick, and more importantly, thorough and caring. His staff is very kind, efficient, and good-natured. I dare say I look forward to my next appointment. read more

3-14-23 Dear Dr. Stemple (please forward to the Dr.). I just got off the phone with someone from your office and I am furious. Here is what happened on the call. 1. I was asked if I was coming to my appt tomorrow at 10:30 am Wed. 3-15-23. I said I will be there and thanked her fro calling and reminding me. 2. right before the end of her call to me, she said she wanted to let me know that Dr. Stemple would not be in the office as he would be away and this would just be a tooth cleaning.I was quite annoyed and asked the receptionist where the DR would be and was he not well. She replied that he has a conference in Arizona.I asked if this conference was known previously, and if so why was I not contacted at the time of the planned conference, so I, as the patient would have the choice as to reschedule the appt, or keep the appt with this new info - 24.5 hours before my scheduled appt. The receptionist said that ALL patients were notified and maybe I forgot. I WAS FURIOUS. In a second insult to my intelligence and not owning up to a mistake in front office procedure, I was told that I had not confirmed my appt.In reality I received a text from DR.Stemples office to confirm my appt, which I immediately replied to in a text saying that I would e there. The person on the phone now blamed me twice for my not either remembering a conversation or not re confirming my appt. When I made these egregious indignities known to her (I was getting very upset now) she raised her voice and made it my fault. Now really, if your front office shows incompetence TWICE, it is their job NOT to argue with the PAYING patient but to be most apologetic and make the patient feel good about an upcoming appt. This was not the case in this conversation - TWICE!! Finally she asked if I would like to reschedule, but my time is tight and I will be there for a teeth cleaning. This should not have happened and the front desk needs a retraining on customer relations.Thank you for getting back to me about this DR. Hope Arizona was fun! Lawrence Helman -- read more

Lambert J Stumpel, DDS - General Dentistry Near Me - San Francisco, California

This is the best dentist & staff you will ever find. I've been in SF for over 24 years & tried many dentists all over the SF Bay Area & you will not find a better dentist. The staff is amazing (all of which have worked together for many, many years), every employee is so incredible you could be friends socially & have great conversations with any one of them. I had a very extreme case & have had braces twice. My second time around I had quotes from 4 other orthodontists that all recommended surgically breaking my jaw for proper alignment. Dr. Van Bergen & Dr. Stumple provided a plan to get the same results without surgery. They are both highly talented & work together like a proven team. YOU WILL NOT FIND 2 BETTER PRACTITIONERS THAN THESE TWO... read more

My new dentist is fantastic after my last dentist retired. Very professional and the hygienist is great as well.

I absolutely love Dr. Stumpel and his entire team. I had two implants done in the same appointment, and it was quick, and easy. The hygienist is also fantastic, as are the secretaries. My smile looks AMAZING and super natural. 100% 5 stars! read more

Dr. is one of the finest human beings I have ever met and is the kind of dentist that genuinely cares about his patient. For example, once, while visiting Switzerland, I cracked an implant. I called him, and he immediately connected me with his colleague in the area I was staying in. The admiration for Dr. Stumple by the Doctor and his colleague showed the power of his professional respectability. He is an expert at what he does and enjoys his work and the satisfaction of his patients. He is caring, thorough, aware, sensitive, humorous, and spares nothing for the patient's comfort. He has been my dentist for more than ten years and was referred to me by Dr. Maas of Creative Dentistry. Finally, Dr. Stumple enjoys an admirable relationship with his competent staff, which has been with him for over twenty years, which is fantastic. This review is about Cam. She's cleaned my teeth a couple times. This is really an activity I've always dreaded. With Cam, it's fun because she's good and fun, and funny. How does she understand what I'm saying with the dental equipment in my mouth? After she was finished my teeth looked so white and fabulous! read more

In my sixteen years of practicing dentistry I have worked and watched many great dentists, but Dr. Stumpel and his assistant Sadi are unsurpassable. Dr. Stumpel listens to ones needs, and has a caring joyful manner that brings about speedy results that are impeccable! I also had my best cleaning ever with Winona! Dr. Stumpel has an amazing team that has been with him all these years providing the most flawless experience at a dental office. read more

Dr. Stumpel and his team do a great job. My two prior dentists had retired and the last one recommended him. Great move. He works painlessly, swiftly, with a great result. And as a techie myself, I love that he embraces the latest technology. I know my teeth are challenged as I grew up pre-flouride with teeth prone to cavaties. Thus I have a mouth like a history of dental techniques from the 50's on. I am confident that Dr. Stumpel will keep those teeth in the best shape possible. read more

My Dad has been seeing Dr. Stumpel since he bought the practice from the dentist who was in the office before (don't remember his name, he retired years ago). When I moved back to the city about 4 years ago, my sister and I both began seeing Dr. Stumpel also. He is amazing!! Always remembers your name and asks you what's going on, and when I was having some gum problems about a year ago he gave me his home and cell numbers for my emergency purposes. His office is completely state of the art, with flat screen photo albums and TVs everywhere. The last time I was there, they even did digital x-rays of my mouth. Yay for no more of those annoying plastic things that always dug into the roof of my mouth and hurt like hell! His hygenists (is that the right term?) are always really nice and gentle as possible, though I never understood why dentists and hygenists always ask you questions when they have their fingers and all kinds of tools in your mouth. - how am I supposed to answer you? Yes, he's expensive, but my insurance (through work) does cover most of my bills from him. I only end up paying about 1/4 of what he charges, which is great. HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! :-) read more

This is the nicest and most modern dentist office I've ever been in. Located on the 25th floor, you can look out onto the entire city while waiting to be seen. Once inside, Dr. Stumpel will spend a lot of time with you on your first appointment, taking pictures of your teeth and bite, giving you a thorough examination, and discussing with you how best to improve your general dental hygiene. I first went to him because my previous dentist wanted me to have 5 cavities filled - Dr. Stumpel looked at my teeth and recommended that I have 0 cavities filled at the time because they were shallow and might not get worse if we kept a close watch on them. Things have been looking good so far in the last year and a half. However, the reason I can't give him 5 stars is because he is CRAZY, RIDICULOUS expensive! I got an estimate of $1800 for a crown - no filling, no root canal, just a crown. That's about twice as expensive as anywhere else, and he isn't on any dental insurance networks. Anyway, if you've got lots of money to spend on dental care, go for the best and go to Dr. Stumpel! read more

I was referred to the fabulous Dr. Stumpel from my fabulous general dentist, Dr. David Fein. Dr. Stumpel performed a tooth extraction, implant, and crown for me. It could have been a horrible dental experience because of the very nature of the procedure, however, Dr. Stumpel was very open and direct about how the procedure would go, and he reassured me that he would do everything he could to minimize pain and discomfort. He truly delivered on his word. I should mention that Dr. Stumpel is a rather smart guy and he is currently working under a patent for his own invention on the implant process. He tried his technique on me and it was very fast and painless -- no cutting of the gums, which made the healing process fast and painless. Dr. Stumpel also utilizes digital x-rays, so there's no waiting around for processing time, and no hard little cardboard thingies that cut your gums while waiting for the x-ray blast. Immediate viewing of your mouth innards. Cool! I highly recommend Dr. Stumpel for any of your dentistry needs. He is conscientious, gentle, smart, always in good spirits, has a rockin' staff, and ultra-deluxe offices with fabulous views. His price points reflect all the benefits mentioned above, so before you make an appointment you might ask for a fee schedule in advance. read more

Almost two years had passed without a dental cleaning. Dr. Stumpel's assistants gently took my x-rays and helped me understand the results. Dr. Stumpel himself was gregarious, knowledgeable, and extremely affable. A wonderful experience, despite being a dental appointment. read more

Grrreat guy, super personality, A true professional. His staff is equal to his expertise.

I think Dr. Stumpel is fantastic. He never does unecessary work. On several occassions the hygenist has suggested that I might need to replace a filling, and he's almost always checked it and said "Nope, we can get more milage out of this." And none of them has given me a problem yet. The office is beautiful and everything there is state-of-the-art. That being said, he's a bit expensive and you should check your insurance coverage because you may have to pay for your "free" semi-annual check-up because it's above the allotted amount. Even with good insurance. But totally worth the money. read more

I've seen Dr. Stumpel for several years. I needed a partial bridge but presented him with a difficult situation due to a cleft palate that I was born with. He did an outstanding job in structuring a bridge that both looks good and feels very comfortable. More important is his dedication to his patients. Recently, I had a dental emergency that needed attention promptly. I only had to contact his office and he immediately worked me in, solving the problem with his usual good humor, professionalism and elan. I'd highly recommend his services to anyone. read more

Dr. Stumpel is more than a dentist. I've had to replace my front four teeth numerous times in life (thanks to a college incident), and Dr. Stumpel came recommended to me from someone inside the industry as "the best in Northern CA." It's been over ten years now since he's been my dentist, and I agree. Not only is his technological expertise the best, his eye for aesthetics is exceptional. So many of my friends and family have horror stories about implants gone wrong. Not me. My implant stories are like advertisements for Dr. Stumpel: Painless. Beautiful. Well done. Lasting. I cannot recommend him enough if you need cosmetic dentistry (especially implants). Additionally, he has a great staff and has little turnover - he's a good guy. read more

So I went to another dentist closer to my house and I swear she didn't do a thing except look at my x-rays and say - "Yeah why don't we wait until she complains" like I wasn't there, and like I hadn't come for a specific reason... A coupla back teeth have been bugging me most of the late Summer/Fall and Im kinda scared to go back to Dr. Stumpel for fear it is something HUGE and Ill have to cover a lot of the payments... I've waited a year before writing this review. I am having a lot of work done, mainly to fix poor dental work done in the past and some neglect on my part. I have so much work to do, that we are stretching it over the course of 1.5+ years with visits about every 3-4 weeks. I am about 60% through and by now I feel like I'm in a committed relationship with this man. Jokes aside, Dr. Stumpel is amazing. To save everyone time reading, I'll just say I echo all the positive things said by others about both him and his staff. I'll also add that if you are not happy with anything at all, he will find a way to make it right, either by redoing the work or crediting if it's not something that can be fixed. We are not done yet but he has already transformed my smile in a major way. The reason for taking off one star is how I feel every time I write them a check. I'm postponing a kitchen remodel in favor of remodeling my smile. I am very happy with the results but I wish I could have a beautiful smile and a beautiful kitchen at once. :-) read more

Best Dentist I've seen, and I've had my share of dental work done. There is no "upsell" here, or unnecessary work done. The staff is fantastic, the office is great, and the adoption of technology is appreciated (tv's, appointments confirmed via email, etc.). Highly recommended. read more

I couldn't be happier with my dental treatment done by Dr Stumpel. He is undoubtedly "the best" in his field. Not only at cosmetic dentistry; I have an implant done by him and it was flawless; no pain, no downtime and was able to back to work the next day! He performed his OWN TECHNIQUE, and his precise and firm surgeon hands are the tools for the ultimate fantastic results. Besides the fact that he is always ON TIME, Courteous and absolutely ready to share his knowledge in case you, like myself, have many questions. He only works with the top latest technology and the best materials; which to me makes the whole difference. I highly recommend Dr Stumpel and his outstanding team. Dr. Stumpel is a genius, pure and simple. I have had major work done on my teeth, and to make things extra difficult for him I have a condition called dystonia which makes my lower jaw move uncontrollably at times. Thanks to him and his very professional staff I feel I can maintain my smile for many a year ... and I am no spring chicken! Dr. Stumple is expensive and worth every single penny (and possibly more). My husband and I needed to find a dentist. We went to someone else first. He said that I needed to have 1 filling replaced, 3 new fillings and surgery on the inside of my lower lip to stop it from pulling my gum line down. He had a much longer list of things to do for my husband. This guy was reputable and had good reviews, but I generally dislike doctors and dentists (professionally, not personally) especially when they do a terrible job of explaining why things are necessary. So we went for a second opinion to Dr. Stumple. He had me from the first 'Hello'. He has a great personal manner, is willing to explain things in a much or as little detail as you like, and he does exactly the work that is necessary to do. He is the perfect dentist. Dr. Stumple replaced 1 filling and gave me 1 new one. We've been "watching" another cavity in the works for 5 years now, but his strategy is to wait until the work needs to be done, because filling the tooth early will just accelerate the eventual decay of the tooth. He said that the gum damage cause by my inner lip was minor and already done, so the surgery would be pointless. His work is exceptional, but even better than that, I fully trust his opinion. Sure, he's probably the most expensive dentist in town, but in the long run he saves us money. Given all that the first guy wanted to do, we spent less with Dr. Stumple and our teeth are better for it. His staff is friendly, professional and knowledgeable as well, and his office is state of the art and immaculately clean. We've been going to Dr. Stumple for over 6 years. For 3 years of that, we lived in New England, but we kept coming back to see him. I won't look for a new dentist until Dr. Stumple retires. You may well ask, if I feel this strongly about him, then why have I only just now gotten around to writing a review? Because he just took my impression of him up even higher, and I really didn't think that was possible. My mother, who lives on the east coast, needs dentures. She called me because she was confused about why and whether she needed implants, too. I had to schedule my next cleaning with Dr. Stumple anyway, so I asked the receptionist if she could ask Dr. Stumple whether he always, never or sometimes recommends implants with dentures, and I told her I understood if he couldn't give out an opinion for someone else without having seen her. Dr. Stumple called me back ten minutes later and spent 15 minutes explaining the medical and cosmetic reasons for having dentures with implants. He even offered to have a look at my mom, knowing that he wouldn't be the one ultimately doing the work. But wait, there's more! He then researched the best dentists for this sort of thing in the area where my mom lives and called me a few hours later with a name and number where should could go for a second opinion or to get all the work done. He made sure I had absolutely no further questions before we hung up the second time. I was beyond impressed. I'll write it again in case you missed it: Dr. Stumple is the perfect dentist. read more

I was dreading this appointment as a day of reckoning. I needed scaling and root cleaning. Just by the sound of it one wants to faint. Have not been to a dentist for years because had such poor experiences. After simple cleaning I would be in pain for a week at a time. I am so impressed. I found an angel named Kam in this office. She was so careful Not to afflict pain on me and she did such a nice a thorough job I can't believe it. I was given some pain meds to take home but I don't need any. It's been 8 hours already. From now on I will request her for life. The office is super modern. I think I will keep my teeth after all. I met Dr. Stumpel by chance. This is my first experience with Dr. Stumpel's office. I broke a tooth on a weekend. At the recommendation of my husband's endodontist, and also checked comments on Yelp, I decided to call Dr. Stumpel. He scheduled me immediately on the Monday morning when I called. He examined and pulled the tooth on the same day around lunchtime. It went beautifully. I did not even need to take any of the pain medication which he prepared for me when I got home. I would like to thank him for being so prompt in taking care of me and did such a professional work. I believe Dr. Stumpel is very capable and passionate about his work. read more

Best dentist in San Francisci, hands down! As a child, I was scarred by the various dentists I saw. As a result, I was deathly scared of "the chair" to the point where I had to be given laughing gas for a simple cavity. When I first saw Dr. S, I was hesitant because he does not use laughing gas. I almost walked out but gave him a chance. I told him my past experiences with dentists and how deathly scared I was. He explained every move in a calm manner that put me at ease. 15 years later, I am no longer afraid to go to the dentist!!!! He is the best. Also, has the best offices of any medical professional....He told me that he has a successful business and it's because of his clients and wanted to give back to his clients with a state of the art facility. It was about three years ago -- I had been going to Dr. Stumpel for over 10 years when my little boy, 10 years old, broke his two front teeth out -- chipped them. We saved the pieces. At that time my son was not one of his patients because he was too young. Regardless, Dr. Stumpel met us on a Sunday, we came back on a Monday and he glued those chips back in. I wanted Dr. Stumpel to deal with this problem because I know he is state-of-the-art, published, cutting edge and he is a perfectionist. To this day, my son's teeth are doing great. Yes, Dr. Stumpel has a busy practice because he is the BEST. But when it counts, he is there and will get things taken care of. My teeth -- doing great. I have had two implants over the years and everything is great. You cannot find a better dentist. He has a real cool looking office and nice staff. Big soccer fan too -- Netherlands! read more

Dr. Stumpel is a lousy dentist. He gave me a "crack finder" plastic stick, told me to bite down on each tooth as hard as I could while he left the room to see another patient. After I broke the first molar, it occurred to me that he purposely wanted me to crack my teeth so he could fill my mouth with crowns. Needless to say, I stopped immediately. He also replaced a front tooth crown but left a horrible grey shadow at the gum line and when I said I was unhappy with that, he said that happens sometimes and he would do nothing about it. I would not recommend him to anyone! read more
