I wish all the people I had to deal with in all walks of life were as good at their jobs and as downright likeable as these two. Nikki, the office manger, is no slouch either. I had a bone graft and some other surgery done with them, and if I had to do it again, knowing that they were taking care of it would make it alright. Oh my gosh. In under an hour, Dr. Belinda Gregory-Head was able to remove a wily implant screw that had my (very capable) dentist and another oral surgeon stumped for four months. HOORAY! I had been prepped to expect ...nothing good: potential bone grafts. Dr. Gregory-Head has an exceptional combination of expertise, confidence, compassion, and humor. I am a seriously anxious patient, forgot to take an Ativan prior to my appointment, and didn't have a single anxiety spike or panic attack. She began by greeting me at the waiting room door, which was just lovely, and apologizing that circumstances brought me to her. In the exam room, my records were already up; she asked questions about my experience thus far; and every step of the way explained what she was doing, clarified why she was proceeding as she was, and ensured that I was okay--all with a confidence, calmness, compassion, and subtle humor that made me feel like I was getting the world's best treatment (which I may, indeed, have gotten). My experience was pain free, amazingly - after four months of prior work, I chalk this up to her precision and expertise. She and patients in the waiting room interacted like old, fast friends. Even the waiting room music was delightful: light, upbeat, kind of Triplets of Belleville belle-epoque cheery. I am filled with relief and only wish that my appointment had happened four months ago, haha. I recently took a bad fall landing on my mouth/teeth. I was in bad shape teeth-wise and pretty upset about it. I called Dr. Gregory-Head who is my dentist aand she immediately had me come in at 10:00 the following AM. She squeezed me in. I was so relieved. She had me see an oral surgeon right away that day and together they had a plan with ta tooth extraction same day, support for my teeth to see what would survive. She is awesome--not only is she a remarkable dentist, she CARES! She knew I was suffering and was so reassuring and supportive--I felt my teeth were in such good hands as well as my spirit. It's true - I actually don't mind going to the dentist but particularly an office like Dr. Gregory-Head's. I wanted to see Dr. Gregory-Head right away, and unlike many dentists that book many weeks out, I was able to see her that day. Sometimes that can be a little alarming (it's like being able to get a reservation at a restaurant the day of) - is that a good thing or a bad thing? In this case, a good thing...because apparently people haven't caught on to how good Dr. Gregory-Head is. First, she is incredibly conscientious of time; my appointment started promptly, and when she was running a few minutes behind, I heard her going out to the waiting room, talking to patients briefly to let them know she was a couple of minutes behind. Most doctors (and some dentists) I've been to arrive late (which is super annoying), and I appreciate that she respects her patients' time as much as they (hopefully) respect hers. Second, the office is just nice and comfortable. I was little thrown off by the giant, old-school Sears-looking building, but Dr. Gregory-Head's office is in the penthouse and totally modern. The space is open and bright with views of Alcatraz and Marin from your chair! Her office isn't huge, but they've done a lot with the space; instead of having lots of walls and doors, there are rice paper screens which provide barriers but take up much less space. As for the cleaning: one of the dental hygienists, Paolo (sp?), cleaned my teeth and gently did a very good job. They use a new (at least new to me) process that uses water and vibrations which seems much less abrasive than other methods of cleaning teeth. During the cleaning, I was sitting by in my chair either watching the TV in the corner of the room (at that time, showing a captivating BBC nature video) or staring out at the view. A totally relaxing way to get my dental needs taken care of. As for service and knowledge, her staff was awesome. Paolo, the dental hygienist, was super nice and friendly and was able to answer all of the questions I had. Dr. Gregory-Head (who saw me after my cleaning) and I chatted about dental care, and she was great - very professional while making me feel super relaxed. The receptionist was also really nice too! This sounds like an advertisement...but it's not! I like good medical professionals, and I like Dr. Gregory-Head. read more

A couple months ago I was walking in Western Addition and got jumped by five guys trying to mug me. Luckily I was able to fight them off, but not before one of them sucker punched me in the face and really screwed up some of my teeth. It was a Friday evening, but somehow a friend of mine was able to contact Dr. Head who said that she couldn't come to the ER since she didn't have hospital privileges, but she did say what the docs needed to do and that she could get me in first thing Monday morning. Going to the dentist is traumatic enough, but given that I was also dealing with just being assaulted I was especially loathe to spend time in a dentist's chair. Luckily Dr. Head is AMAZING. Her warm demeanor and excellent bedside manner put me at ease. She was honest about the prospects of keeping my teeth, but also reassuring and optimistic. Her professionalism and competence made my ordeal as comfortable as possible. Her staff in the office are wonderful and helpful in the billing process. In the end I had to get a root canal on one tooth and Dr. Head communicated with the endontist in Anchorage that I saw to make sure that everybody was on the same page. I have been going to her every month when I am in San Francisco and when I mentioned that it was easier to see my hometown dentist for maintenance she was very supportive and said that she would send any records or x-rays that were needed. I can't tell you enough how lucky I feel that my friend found Dr. Head. She truly is an amazing dental professional and I wish that I lived in SF so I could see her regularly as my dentist. read more

Belinda Head is the only source for dentistry!! I left Belinda because my insurance didn't work with her practice.....god what a mistake. I spent two years in hell with GENTLE DENTAL! GD was insistent I need $5k worth of work on my well kept teeth....They freaked when I said I was getting another opinion and needed my xrays. They wouldn't even release my x-rays without me paying a ridiculous fee. Sorry GD find another sucker! I have since canceled my insurance and gone back over to the light! Belinda reviewed my new x-rays, cleaned me up, and assured me my teeth are extra healthy with no work necessary. Belinda Head - whether you want me or not you have a patient for life!! read more

Nice reviews about Ms. Gregory-Head...ours will be somewhat different. I called Dr. Alex McDonald to get a referral, he gave me her name and phone number (I wasn't aware of their partnership at that time). I needed expert evaluation on my daughter's situation. We completed forms before the appt., with her really obnoxious front desk person (Arlene) who feels she should know everything. Dr. McDonald was there and Dr. Head, it was very brief and very unprofessional...basically Dr. Head told us exactly the same information WE PROVIDED FOR HER in the forms we filled out! How absurd is that? We requested a refund of her charges...it took months! And she still hasn't refunded us all of the money. A waste of time. She might be good at somethings but doing important expert evaluations is not one of them. She actually repeated our information that we wrote on her office forms....duh. read more

Can I just say that I feel very fortunate to have been referred to Dr. Head & Dr. McDonald. I've always had problematic teeth growing up and have not had the best experience with dentists, thus they are far from my favorite doctors. That however changed after I met Dr. Head and Dr. McDonald. They are extremely friendly, warm, skilled and knowledgeable. I feel completely at ease on every visit and have faith that I too can have beautiful teeth. I had 2 surgical procedures with Dr. McDonald that went extremely well. They were major bone grafting surgeries that were almost painless. I only had to take some anti-biotics and nearly no pain killers. The bone he grafted provided the foundation for my implants and I'm very excited to say that I'm nearing the final stages. Dr. Belinda Head is awesome as well. She's super nice and totally competent. She can take an impression of your mouth and make you temporary teeth that look like the real thing in just 10 minutes. Since they are temporaries and I do love to eat, they do sometime get loose and I've never had a problem getting in right away to get it fixed, thank you Heather for gluing me back so many time :) I highly recommend both Dr. McDonald and Dr. Belinda Head because they are simply the best!!! Their office staffs are also super friendly and caring. Thank you Nikki for getting me same day appointments. Thank you Paolo for cleaning my teeth. I was just grabbing this link to recommend Dr. Head to yet another friend, and realized I'd not reviewed her. What the heck is wrong with me? Dr. Head is the most awesome dentist ever in the entire world. The only exception I would make to that statement is her partner, Dr. MacDonald, who is the best oral surgeon ever. I had a very complex and crazy dental situation (bone tumor which had to be removed, which meant having to lose about 1/4 of my teeth in the process). The whole ordeal (biopsies, two surgeries, temporary plate, and permanent bridge) took about a year, and they were so cool throughout. When my insurance got weird about covering the surgery, Dr. MacDonald assured me that he would work it out, since I needed the surgery (He's Scottish, and he said something like, "I come from a country with a sensible approach to medical care, and I'm not going to let an insurance company endanger your health.") They were so incredible that I switched my regular dental care to Dr. Head, and have been super happy. Hopefully none of y'all wioth ever need massive dental surgery and reconstructive work, but if you do, these guys are amazing. And even if all you need is the ol' cleaning and x-rays, still amazing. read more

Today was my second visit to Dr. Belinda Head and what a pleasant experience. I am no stranger to dental offices of all sorts and have had countless oral/dental procedures from crowns to root canals and orthognathic surgery to braces. And everything in between. An out of whack office can pile on the anxiety, but not here. From the second you walk in to Dr. Heads gorgeous office you feel calm and welcomed warmly. I truly feel like I am put first. Everyone here is excellent at their job and that creates a super comfortable experience. I had one tooth, a very old crown, that has bugged me for many years and have been to nervous to let anyone touch, but today she dove right in and took care of THREE! teeth in just over 2 hours. They have needed love since I got my braces off and had jaw reconstruction a year and half ago so I feel so much better already with just my temps in. I'm so excited. Thanks to this team! read more

My experience with this dental office was frustrating. Dr. Head recommended I see Dr. McDonald for an implant. I had two appointments, but did not have the luck to meet the elusive Dr. McDonald. He did not show up for my first appointment and neither for my second rescheduled appointment. Even though I was offered a free teeth cleaning, it did not make up for the disappointment to have to leave twice without having the consultation for which I was scheduled. I originally saw Dr. Head to obtain implants to replace two teeth that had become a problem. The various options of 2 teeth versus 4, and of dentures vs. implants was explained, and I chose the 2 implants. All in all, it was an easy procedure, with Dr. McDonald doing the surgical work, and Dr. Head following up with the implants. By easy, I mean it was pain free because of the anesthesia, although there was a period of waiting for the bone to grow before permanent implants could be installed. I have continued to see Dr. Head since, for general dentistry, and am completely satisfied with the care I receive at her very efficient and friendly office. read more

Dr Belinda Gregory-Head has been my dentist for the past 6 or so years, and she and her staff have always treated me with great care and respect. Unfortunately, I recently had a job change that caused me to seek out dental care from within my insurance provider's network. I had an awful experience with an in-network dentist who listed off a great number of expensive and invasive procedures that she insisted I needed ASAP! I left feeling rattled and reached back out to Dr Head's office for a second opinion. I was able to get an exam scheduled quickly, and after a thorough check on my teeth was reassured that there was in fact nothing requiring immediate action and my teeth were actually quite healthy! I am back on a regular cleaning schedule with Dr Head and realize now that the level of care, expertise, professionalism and warmth that I receive from all staff within her office is worth every penny spent out of pocket! Her sense of humor and genuine relationships with her office staff evoke a family environment where patient care is top priority and standards of excellence baseline to the experience. This is a joint review for Dr. Gregory-Head and for Dr. Alex McDonald, as they work in tandem. Like another reviewer, I shamefully admit the review is overdue. I have had a fantastic experience with these two consummate professionals, and the office staff (Nikki in particular), and I am sure you will as well. I had a consultation with Dr. Head, followed by surgery in May of 2015 with Dr. McDonald, to remove all my existing teeth and bridge work, in order to clean up and heal underlying infections, and install dental implants. I had started the process in 2009, but I had to give it up because of my work commitments. I was only able to continue once I had retired. While I was putting off necessary work, the silver lining is that the technology has advanced a light year in the interim. What would have taken a protracted period of time and multiple procedures in 2009 was largely accomplished with a single operation in 2015. This was an in office operation. All I can say is that Dr. McDonald has the very best in trained and skilled assistants. The security you feel with them is something that money really cant buy. What followed was a healing period of several months, during which I wore a temporary, full denture. I was closely monitored by both doctors. By October of 2015, I had my new, snap in teeth, which snap on to the implants. It is Dr. Head who accomplished this installation. I chose this option rather than a full set of implants that mimic teeth, as I felt it was such an easy maintenance. Why opt for a more complicated and expensive option when this will suffice? I was not disappointed. Aside from looking terrific, more importantly, they feel so extremely comfortable. I can forget to take them out at times, because I hardly know they are there. Most important of all is their functionality. I can eat steak and corn on the cob again! Be advised I would not recommend this procedure for purely cosmetic reasons. The operation and the healing period are daunting. The use of the full denture is something you have to get used to, and it is never as completely comfortable as you would like. That being said, the end result is so worth it. Yes, I paid a premium price for this work. But when it comes to eyes and teeth, you cannot be too careful, and you need to be in the hands of people you completely trust. Dr. Head and Dr. McDonald are those people. read more

Okay, this is a two-part review because my teeth were in a state of disrepair. Well, not that bad, but it had been a couple of years since my last visit so they needed to clean. And clean again. And have me come back for another deep cleaning. Makes me feel bad for the girls I've kissed over the past years. Sorry ladies. Anyway, I was referred to this place by my buddy Nick, and they take very good care of you. Kristina gave me my checkup and abused me about how I didn't floss enough and how much crap she had to scrape off. But in a good way that made me want to take better care of my teeth. Then Dr. Belinda Head came in and told me very politely and pointedly that I needed a root canal because of a tooth fracture that developed decay. Then she referred me to Dr. Clark downstairs and assured me in her wonderfully soothing British accent that root canals aren't that bad anymore. Well. I guess I shouldn't have waited so long to get my teeth cleaned. So, my only complaint is that the sun was pouring in the east side window and I thought I was going to start baking in the chair while Kris prodded my teeth. But the old building up on the 25th floor is really cool and most importantly, clean. You get to see the whole city while they scrape tartar. Pretty cool. Very reassuring and professional, zero warning flags for me, who is extremely dental phobic. So far so good. Tomorrow is the actual surgery, I'll post an update (if I remember!). Update - surgery was completely painless (ok, slight jab with the IV, but her partner Alex hit the vein first time). I did come too after the major work had been done, but wasn't a problem, just a little dazed while they finished up. This was a four hour surgery, and apparently I'd reach the end of the safe side of fully unconscious. I have no negative associations though, and everything feels perfect (amazing given the 5 crowns, 4 quadrant scaling, 2 extractions and an implant). So 5 Stars for Belinda and Alex! Ironically that my new favorite dental surgeons are British given that it was the British dental system from the 60s that gave me my dental phobia trauma in the first place! Update #2. Had the follow up fitting of crowns done under anti-anxiety pills, worked perfectly. Also Dr Head was able to fit 5 crowns in less than an hour. Amazing compared to the 2 hour ordeal for just one I endured at a prior dentist in SF. read more

Dr Head and her team have been providing my dental care for a few years. The quality of work and the friendly atmosphere leaves me leaving happy every time. That said, I'm not there often because the work and preventative care and placement of beautiful veneers let me get on with my life - without ongoing problems. I received a recommendation from my home-town dentist to make a visit to Dr. Head. I had already been to two other dentists in San Francisco, and (while they were nice) they just did not quite meet the expectations that I have for dental/medical practices. I was quite relieved to find Dr. Head, her assistant Paolo, the professional front office staff, and also Dr. Head's surgical liaison, Dr. MacDonald. I have now been going to Dr. Head for over a year. She takes the time to discuss my current dental condition, obviously reads over my chart before I arrive (or she has an amazing memory... either way it's a win), and is efficient with her time. Paolo has cleaned my teeth multiple times. He is extremely gentle, calming (if you have dental anxiety - this would be your guy), and thorough. And he's just a sweetheart!! I also had a dental implant surgery completed by Dr. MacDonald. He walked me through each step of the procedure before and during the surgery. I had a great recovery and am very pleased with the final product. All in all, they're a great office. Extremely clean, organized, and personable. And they send you email reminders so you don't forget your appointment!!! =) read more

I was hit by a car and chipped three teeth less than a week before I was in a friend's wedding. I didn't expect to be able to open my mouth in the photographs. Once I explained the situation, Dr. Gregory-Head was able to see me within two days, and that day did an excellent job restoring my teeth well enough that no one could tell I'd been in a crash. I was very surprised that she was able to do the work that day, instead of needing an introductory appointment followed by the procedure. Also, without me requesting, she also documented the best- and worse-case treatment plans for the future, which has been very helpful in talking to the driver's insurance company. Dr. Gregory-Head had excellent bedside manner, explained the procedures in great depth, and produced exceptional results. I certainly do not like going to the dentist - don't know anyone who does. Seems like my teeth are just my Achilles heel - no matter how fabulous my dental hygiene regimen is or how often I go to the dentist as a preventative measure, they have always been my weak point. As a result, I have had a lot of work done over my lifetime and it has been painful. Ok, so you know this makes for a very dental phobic patient! When it comes to being a dental patient - I am certainly no prize because of past experiences, trepidations, and fears. I wish I could give Dr. Gregory-Head and Dr. MacDonald's practice more than 5 stars!! During my visits to their practice, I have never felt more comfortable or supported. Dr. Gregory Head is very thorough, caring, takes her time so you never feel rushed, and explains every aspect of your dental health and their proposed treatment plan. Dr. MacDonald is a skilled oral surgeon who performs his work totally pain free. I have found the Drs. and their practice to be very professional, warm, concerned, caring and apprised of the latest procedures and technology in the dental field. They spend time assessing your lifestyle and medical health to ensure that the treatment plan proposed is a good fit for the patient. They also make sure they are accessible to their patients to answer questions between visits, and return calls promptly.
