Tonight, I had the pleasure of meeting Abbie. She was the most sweet and welcoming person. She was at a station making pecan brittle. She asked us if we wanted to try a sample and just like that I was hooked. I had to have a bag to take back with me to jersey. However, I wandered into the wrong shop - this one - by ignorance. I had scoped out another sweet shop and thought that was were I was headed. Anyway, I did not realize my error until after getting home. Fudge was being made on marble slabs, the way it should be, so I went for the Mackinac Island Fudge Twirl. Fudge blended in with a nice creamy vanilla base with out over powering, but still providing a good flavor. In all honesty, there are a few gourmet ice cream parlor in the Nashville area that provide a better product. Since I was a chocolate shop also, I tried a few small pieces and found them better than average, but not great. Cleanliness is critical for any food service facility and the sparkling white decor highlighted what a good job they did. Along one wall was a shelf table with about 6 stools and two tables with chairs were outside for those wanting their treats al fresco. Several employees were behind the counter scooping ice cream and ringing up orders. They were all very polite and accommodating. Since I don't get to Franklin often, I'll try the other sweet shop. While exploring Tennessee's downtown shops I stumbled upon Kilwin's. This place is an amazing little room from heaven! The smell of fresh made chocolate and fresh sweet waffle cones being made was tickling my senses and drawing me in, almost like I was hypnotized! They had buy two get one free huge slices of fudge, delicious dipped candy apples covered in all types of goodness, and white, dark, & milk chocolate treats and truffles as far as that eyes could see. There were three wonderful young ladies working here, who took the time to talk to customers, answer their questions and even make suggestions and give samples of their rich and creamy ice cream! Adelynn was describing the contents and scooping the ice cream with such pride (almost as if she made it herself), Ellie was making perfect waffle cones to accent the ice cream, in between serving up delicious chocolate treats and Olivia was amazing as she helped us make some great choices. All of the girls have been working here for a few years and they all love the management and the smiles they receive when they are serving people in this chocolate haven. I like the ice cream here. My kids did too. They have fresh fudge and they also make coffee. They have a wall table with a few high top chairs inside and a couple of tables outside. I would definitely put a small table inside as they do have a little bit of space so it would be more comfortable to eat the ice cream, specially with kids. Sweet temptations of deliciousness! Every time we stop in here we walk out with more sweets than we really need, but we always love them all. This time we stopped in for some chocolate-covered strawberries for my wife for Valentine's Day. I couldn't resist picking up some fudge while we were there. In the past I've enjoyed their peanut butter cups and some of the other candies. The candied apples always look amazing but so far we haven't tried those. We have always been greeted by several of the friendly staff as soon as we walk in, and we are immediately overwhelmed by the very large selection of sweets to choose from, all of which look beautiful. This is a great dessert shop if you need a variety of items to select from . The prices are a bit high for the size and the fact some items are mass produced. Unbelievably good chocolate confections, and ice cream to boot! I visited with my daughter today because she just had to get a Carmel, chocolate coated apple with salt on it. That procured, she asked the nice lady to cut it for her because she knew that I'd eventually ask for a taste. I did just that, and boy, was it ever good! Having it cut is definitely the way to go. It turns a potential gooey mess into something a fine lady and gentleman could manage. Not suggesting that I'm in any way a gentleman, but having it cut keeps chocolate off the nose. I only wish that I could keep it off my shirt! You can do no wrong by entering Franklin's version of Wonka's factory. Who knows, you may even see an Oompa Loompa. While in Franklin we were looking for ice cream and decided to stop at Kilwin's. I had turtle cheesecake which was quite good. I did feel that it was a bit overpriced at $6.25 for a single scoop. The delightful display cases wind around to lead you throughout the store in an ever growing lust for the goodies on offer along with tempting you with free samples of many of their delicious offerings. The one problem is that there prices are just so high for example $8 for two scoops in a waffle cone, for two people thats $16 for some ice cream! Stopped by today. Walked in with my family. Dark haired girl behind the counter said, "how are you?" I said, "great, how are y--"... she cut me off and said rudely "just so you know we are trying to close." Lol, okay. We had seen the "closing early" sign on the door but didn't realize it was after five. There were plenty of people still in there and your door was still unlocked. MY BAD. I understand businesses need to close sometimes early or just close in general. But when you have employees that cannot communicate in a nice way to potential customers-- that's unfortunate. If you grew up in Tennessee, you probably made a number of pilgrimages to Gatlinburg where the family ate their quota of fudge, taffy, and other sweets. Kilwin's has it all; caramel apples, ice cream, salt-water taffy, numerous flavors of fudge, and pretty much chocolate-covered everything. The maple walnut fudge is soft and melts in your mouth. I LOVE fudge, but I hate the fact that it gets too rich and sugary after several bites. Not Kilwin's fudge, striking the perfect balance between being richly flavorful and humbly tame, not overwhelmingly sweet. Rather than peddling some mediocre dairy product from a big corporation, they make their own ice cream. And it's REALLY good. The mint chocolate chip should be renamed mint chocolate CHUNK! Those are the biggest chunks of chocolate I've ever discovered in my favorite flavor of ice cream. But the caramel flavor was out of this world! So creamy, so smooth, so buttery.
