Kill Devils is one of those seasonal places whose schedule does not match with ours very well. This time we stayed long enough to overlap with them, and I really wanted a chili dog. Ms T ordered a cheeseburger with provolone, and I had my Cooley Dog, with chili and slaw. We brought it all home because we live close. Ms liked the burger saying it had better grill crust flavor than the one she had at Snow Birds a week ago. This one also seemed to be generous for a ¼ pounder and is well priced. I have and their chili dogs before and was not disappointed. I like the bun length dog and their chili is well flavored. Some places' chili is too sweet or heavy-handed with garlic. I've been here a few more times since I gave this place a 2 star review back in September of 2011. I still stand beside that review on the food items from this venue....even their hot dogs are just not that great. Don't come here for food!! Come here for custard and dessert because that's where they shine. In fact, I wish they'd just focus on that instead of food...they could really step up their custard game to the next level. Last time I went I got the Cookie Monster which is two heated up cookies covered in fudge between ice cream of your choice, covered in more fudge and whip cream. The whip cream would be an example of where they could really improve if they weren't making hamburgers...they could make their own whip cream and I'm sure that would knock everything up an extra level. Anyway, you can't go wrong here with the custard. Parking lot is small and it can get quite busy in the summer. My wive had a vanilla custard and I had a banana split Her small custard was good but not quite as good as the custard location near our home on the west coast My banana split was ok The banana was fresh I ordered the split without the pineapple topping and nuts When they were done and right before they were going to place it on the counter to give to me. I noticed they were scrapping off something When I finally did received my banana split. It had 2 pieces of pineapple because they missed it when they scrapped off the pineapple topping instead of making a new one. Luckily I am not allergic So I marked down 1 star because of the pineapple and because we have had better frozen custard But for a tourist spot it was good. The service was ok nothing special. Absolutely love this place, and so do the doggos. For the carnivores, the burgers are absolutely massive the prices are reasonable and they have the best pup cups ever! Huge bucket of fries, honestly more than we could ever eat, with just a little bit of spice and salt. Nice covered patio to dine in and absolutely pet friendly. This is a beach tradition! We've been going every year for the past 10 years. Excellent NC bbq and fries. The custard is so creamy and delicious. They don't have many flavors serving at once but they do have more flavors in pints to go. It you check their Facebook page you can see their flavor of the day which they have available with chocolate and vanilla Very casual-you can show up in a suit right from the beach and either eat at picnic tables outside or under their overhang. It's safe to say that my favorite vegetable is French Fries. Okay, fine, maybe they're not a vegetable, but either way, two big thumbs up for Kill Devil's Frozen Custard & Beach Fries. (Known from here on out on this review as KDFC&BF, which in retrospect is somewhat just as difficult to type. But I'm committed to the bit now.) --Food: Speaking about commitment, KDFC&BF takes their burgers, fries, and custard seriously. It's real good. Not only is it real good, but they're also allergen alert, so those unfortunate enough such as myself to not be able to eat wheat can still enjoy a meal with reasonable mindset that it's safe to eat. I had emailed the owner prior to coming here and they promptly replied that they are familiar with Celiac and have a separate fryer and can make bunless burgers safely as well. (Let's be honest, you're after the deliciousness of the burger and the toppings anyway and not some ole' edible breadplate, right?) Either way, 5 stars all the way. The (bunless) Kill Devil Burger (basically bacon double cheeseburger) was great. Toppings were fresh and the burger itself was delicious. The fries are super tasty, fresh, cooked to order, and are seasoned wonderfully. In fact, we stopped here another night and I got an order just to snack on. I tried some of the additional seasonings they have available, but honestly the tried and true salt and pepper that's on it in the first place is perfect. The custard is great too, but I'm not too much of an ice cream person. My fiancee however, very much is. I stuck with a vanilla with some strawberry topping but she went all in with some sort of Hot Fudge Brownie Sundae. She also got something smaller and more manageable the next time we stopped by for an evening snack too, but I forget exactly what it was. She loved it though. She also got a corn dog as well and said it was good. --Cost: Fries are a few dollars, burgers a couple more, custard somewhere in the middle. Definitely affordable. --Service: Staff is great and understood my dietary restriction. Line was physically long but moved reasonably fast. --Atmosphere: There's no indoor seating but there are benches and tables to sit at. Nice relaxed atmosphere. There's also a giant pink chair that you can take your picture with if you want, which is fun. I will advise to be careful while jumping up there though, because even if you're a 30 year old in pretty good shape, seems like it could be possible to almost slide off or down the back and hurt yourself. --Overall: One of the best stops of our trip visiting OBX. They have one flavor of the day in addition to their classic vanilla and chocolate custard, and you can sample the flavor of the day! There's usually a long line and it can be hard to find parking, but it's absolutely worth it. Not too many tables but somehow you always get a seat. Just a heads up, the waffles are frozen and not made in house. The food options look great, but I didn't have a chance to experience them. That said, the ice cream more than made up for it. You like sundaes? They are wonderfully decadent with plenty of different options. Just a cone and ice cream person? The "regular" size is about 3.5 scoops high (the cake cone couldn't handle it!). Enjoy shakes/floats? They've got you covered! And my personal favorite is their version of Dairy Queen's Blizzards that they call a Hurricane. I got one (a regular size, which was massive. I can't imagine how big the larger size is!) with chocolate ice cream, hot fudge and Andes mints. Every bite was flavor-packed. They also talk up their hot fudge.... and the fudge delivers. Chocolatey, warm, and gooey - they put their money where their mouth is. It's absolutely worth paying extra for. My only complaint would be the limited number of flavors (get there early so they have flavors other than chocolate and vanilla - although those flavors are great). We came here the first night we were in town and absolutely fell in love! Their hurricane shakes are small malts mixed with your favorite mix-ins. The ice cream is so creamy! I don't know what they do to it, but it is so so good!! The line was maybe 10 people long when we got there and doubled by the time we left.
