I've been here a few more times since I gave this place a 2 star review back in September of 2011. I still stand beside that review on the food items from this venue....even their hot dogs are just not that great. Don't come here for food!! Come here for custard and dessert because that's where they shine. In fact, I wish they'd just focus on that instead of food...they could really step up their custard game to the next level. Last time I went I got the Cookie Monster which is two heated up cookies covered in fudge between ice cream of your choice, covered in more fudge and whip cream. The whip cream would be an example of where they could really improve if they weren't making hamburgers...they could make their own whip cream and I'm sure that would knock everything up an extra level. Anyway, you can't go wrong here with the custard. Parking lot is small and it can get quite busy in the summer. Aside from the tables in front of the ordering area, there are several in the parking lot that have shade in the evening.

Absolutely love this place, and so do the doggos. For the carnivores, the burgers are absolutely massive the prices are reasonable and they have the best pup cups ever! Huge bucket of fries, honestly more than we could ever eat, with just a little bit of spice and salt. Nice covered patio to dine in and absolutely pet friendly. Plus I'm obsessed with her shakes, because it's real ice cream. You definitely have to get your steps in after a visit, but worth it!

Flavor of the day was cherry! So good!

This place is so good, literally the only thing I don't like about it is they are closed Monday and Tuesday. We visited every day they were open during our stay. If you haven't had custard before, you're missing out! It's so rich and creamy- every flavor I've tried has been a hit! (Each day they feature a new flavor)

Every time I visit OBX, I come here to eat their frozen custard. The quality of frozen custard is always the same. I tried Banana split and cookie monster with Chocolate and Vanilla frozen custard. The cookie was kinda hard and that is not my thing. But I still enjoyed frozen custard. Their custard melts my mouth. It is so creamy. The menu and theme are very similar to DQ but 100% better. This is a must-visit in OBX.

Regular beach fries with a burger without bun. There are two beef burgers with bacon under that lettuce. Very tasty! [GF]

It's safe to say that my favorite vegetable is French Fries. Okay, fine, maybe they're not a vegetable, but either way, two big thumbs up for Kill Devil's Frozen Custard & Beach Fries. (Known from here on out on this review as KDFC&BF, which in retrospect is somewhat just as difficult to type. But I'm committed to the bit now.) --Food: Speaking about commitment, KDFC&BF takes their burgers, fries, and custard seriously. It's real good. Not only is it real good, but they're also allergen alert, so those unfortunate enough such as myself to not be able to eat wheat can still enjoy a meal with reasonable mindset that it's safe to eat. I had emailed the owner prior to coming here and they promptly replied that they are familiar with Celiac and have a separate fryer and can make bunless burgers safely as well. (Let's be honest, you're after the deliciousness of the burger and the toppings anyway and not some ole' edible breadplate, right?) Either way, 5 stars all the way. The (bunless) Kill Devil Burger (basically bacon double cheeseburger) was great. Toppings were fresh and the burger itself was delicious. The fries are super tasty, fresh, cooked to order, and are seasoned wonderfully. In fact, we stopped here another night and I got an order just to snack on. I tried some of the additional seasonings they have available, but honestly the tried and true salt and pepper that's on it in the first place is perfect. The custard is great too, but I'm not too much of an ice cream person. My fiancee however, very much is. I stuck with a vanilla with some strawberry topping but she went all in with some sort of Hot Fudge Brownie Sundae. She also got something smaller and more manageable the next time we stopped by for an evening snack too, but I forget exactly what it was. She loved it though. She also got a corn dog as well and said it was good. --Cost: Fries are a few dollars, burgers a couple more, custard somewhere in the middle. Definitely affordable. --Service: Staff is great and understood my dietary restriction. Line was physically long but moved reasonably fast. --Atmosphere: There's no indoor seating but there are benches and tables to sit at. Nice relaxed atmosphere. There's also a giant pink chair that you can take your picture with if you want, which is fun. I will advise to be careful while jumping up there though, because even if you're a 30 year old in pretty good shape, seems like it could be possible to almost slide off or down the back and hurt yourself. --Overall: One of the best stops of our trip visiting OBX. Next time we're in the area, KDFC&BF is definitely on the list of places to return to. Delicious fries and an all around great experience.

YUM YUM YUM!!! This place has the best frozen desserts in OBX, this was delicious. I was basic and chose to go with just a Vanilla in a cone, but most definitely was worth it. In the past, I've gotten the waffles with ice cream in the middle and have to say those may be the best if you have the appetite. I nice feature of this place is the bouncy ball dispenser. What a place to make memories!

I've been wanting to try this place since we started visiting the OBX. It is a walk up window type restaurant. They have food and custard. It is clean and has tons of outdoor seating. The service was great at the window and your dessert was ready pretty quickly. I got the chocolate custard in waffle cone and it was super yummy! Will definitely come back on our next visit.

We stopped by to have some custard. They have several flavors plus a special flavor of the day. Marshmallow was the flavor of the day. They offer sundaes and something called a hurricane. You pick a flavor and topping and they mix them together. I had marshmallow custard with fudge and chocolate chips. My son had snickers mixed in chocolate custard. Both were good and had plenty of toppings. They just need more places to sit.

This year the custard sundae we received was terrible. It consisted of maybe one bite of (crunchy peanut butter) custard and a MOUND of whipped cream. We were so disappointed. I am kind of afraid to try again. I get that there are employee issues but we really should of gone back to the window. UGH !!!!!

There was no line Wednesday afternoon when we arrived. Everyone was doing a good job with masks and social distancing. We only got ice cream, but the fries and food looked really delicious. The prices for sundaes are a bit steep for the amount that you get, but this is a beach town. There's always vanilla and chocolate custard, and then the flavor of the day. Our flavor happened to be cinnamon roll, which they let us try. The custard was delicious and the cookie did indeed taste fresh baked!

It was the special: raspberry filled beignets topped with a raspberry sauce whipped cream and their house made vanilla frozen custard

Draft beer and cocktails available. Food was super delicious and not overly gigantic. Our burgers were grilled perfectly with just a minimum amount of condiments(.50) for shrooms, grilled onions and mayo(yup, mayo costs money). The tots are a seasonal thing so I got that. Delicious as tots are usually a staple in my diet. Sodas are free refills and our server even gave me a to-go cup. I live a refreshing fountain soda. The indoor dining area has lots of beach themed decor. There is a full bar at the front. I think on the weekends and summer season they also have outdoor music.

I talked Ms T into trying it again. We just can't handle a big lunch and wanted to avoid leftovers, so decided to split a pickle brined chicken sandwich with fries and an extra side of slaw. The sandwich was OK. To start with it needed more seasoning. How about breaking out the black pepper and garlic powder? The meat was uncharacteristically tough/chewy for chicken breast. I suggest they need to be pounding it to tenderize it and then brine it. It was actually hard for us to cut and eat. It really looked nice, but I think I am done with pickle brined chicken. It just never gets enough brine impact. They make good small caliber fries that were piping hot and the slaw was fine for me. Ms T did not care for it so I got it all. Our food was OK, not stellar. The service was excellent, but I still can't make this better than three stars. I hope to convince her to return for a burger during this trip.

I guess the Rockfish tacos were a daily special, so I ordered the "World Famous" Mahi tacos while Ms T ordered a crabcake sandwich. I think we were both a little disappointed. Her sandwich was definitely for bun lovers. She tore off enough bread for another sandwich and still had plenty. Restaurants are often guilty of conflating a huge bun with good sandwich. She was not particularly impressed with the crab cake, saying it was overloaded with thyme. I ordered my Mahi "blackened" and it really was not. The seasonings were good although also heavy with thyme. The flour tortillas were of poor quality, very thin and leathery and not provided hot. Hence the tacos were room temperature when eaten. I liked the finely shredded cheese that was not served refrigerator cold. The white sauce they serve is just wrong for these tacos. It is too sweet, too tart, making it harsh. Instead, I used the sauce that came with her crab cake and that was much better. Finally the mahi was very dry. I guess that is kind of the way that mahi is, but this really needed plenty of sauce. Kudos to them for serving good jasmine rice. This was not as good as we remembered. It is OK, not great and could be improved with just a few changes. We should have tried the burgers.
