She makes shopping feel easy and enjoyable (even with little ones in tow!). The store itself has such a warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes you want to stay and browse. After striking out at Footwear, etc. down the street, we walked up a couple of blocks to see if we could find a pair of shoes at Kids Only. Even though only the owner was there and there several customers, she handled everyone efficiently. She measured my son's foot and quickly had a pair of shoes for us to try. My son walked gingerly around a few steps, but she insisted he run to the front door to make sure they felt good. It's expensive and the customer service is pathetic. I bought an outfit ($75 for overalls and t-shirt) as a gift for my grandson and asked about return policy in case it didn't fit (or, as it turned out, my DIL didn't like it...because overalls for a 1 y.o. without snaps just doesn't work). I was told no refunds, but I could return for store credit. Given the high price point, that seemed a little restrictive but at least I knew the deal. Except what I wasn't told was even the store credit was only available for 30 days after purchase. So 2 months after I bought it (then sent it to my grandson, then had my DIL send it back), I went to return the outfit and exchange for something else. But no ... "not their policy." When I pushed back because I hadn't been told that part, her response was to pull out a business card that had it printed on the back. BTW, I did not see this very restrictive return policy posted anywhere in the store. It only exists on the back of this business card that lives hidden in the cash register drawer. read more

Long overdue review for this store. This is such a gem in downtown Los Altos! Rita is so warm, friendly and has such a great eye for amazing clothes, shoes, presents, toys. We love coming here, especially for special presents and gifts -the things you get here are unique and impossible to find elsewhere but also extremely high quality! Our kids are so picky especially about their shoes and jackets, but the things we get here are comfortable and stylish, and they're always a hit with our little ones!! I never thought I would be the parent trying to find that one special thing for christmas. I remember the cabbage patch wars. That was not going to be me. I don't allow my daughter to make a christmas list. I say, "Christmas is about giving, not getting." When my daughter was born (she's 4) my husband and I decided we were not going to do Santa. To me Christmas is about Jesus, not Santa, my husband was not raised Christian and, thus, did not celebrate Christmas, and neither of us like the idea that Santa's gifts come with a "naughty or nice" judgement. By Los Altos standards we are relatively poor and we don't want her to think she's not nice because all her friends get so much more from Santa. So, we've told her that Santa is just a story and that some people celebrate that story, but we celebrate Jesus. Well, with all of the logic and wisdom she can muster she is trying to convince us that Santa is real. Santa visited her preschool and she told him she wants kitty cat rain boots for Christmas and she's convinced they will show up for Christmas. She said to me, "You may not celebrate Santa, but to me he's real, you'll see on Christmas morning." So now if I don't get her the kitty cat boots I'm crushing her budding sense of how the world works. Which is all a long intro to talking about my experience at this store. My husband told me they carry the boots. So I go in and ask for them. They have them...iIn her size, but they cost almost $30. I just can't make myself pay that much for boots she will wear for 3 months and then outgrow before they are useful again. I've looked on-line and know that the same boots exist at Target for half the price. So I ask the woman if I can put them on hold and, craftily, she doesn't tell me no, but she does say that if someone else wants them she will have to sell them. So now we are those parents, having checked three Targets and counting to try to find boots at a reasonable price. Let me say also about this store that the clothes in it are lovely. They are unique and charming and would do any little girl with a sense of style proud, if only you can afford to shop there. The prices are ridiculous! I definately can not afford anything in this store. And if I end up buying the boots here (assuming they have not been sold) they will go on the credit card and I will probably be paying for them longer than my daughter is wearing them. If I did not have to be so careful with my budget I would rate this store higher, mostly because their stuff is so adorable, but also because I would not have had to rely on the kindness of the woman behind the counter, who is probably in need of selling as much as possible before Christmas and helping the nice lady (me) with the boots she can't afford doesn't help her do that. another cute store in downtown los altos. i've been to this store a few times and found that they have a really large selection of children's clothes and shoes. i'm quite impressed by how much inventory they have despite the average-sized storefront. since i have nieces and nephews who are still single-digit aged, this is the perfect place to buy clothes for them. and since i have small feet, i've actually found shoes that fit me and are suitable for an adult female. i find that their hours are a bit restricted, since one time i tried to stop by around 5.30 pm and they were already closed. guess i need to come early if i want to shop here. overall, great selection of clothes and shoes. read more

I always make Kid's Only my first stop for any special baby gift or birthday gift. Rita also offers complimentary gift wrapping. She is a BOW PRO! Her gifts are always beautifully wrapped. I feel compelled to write a review since there are a few very bad reviews. So here is the scoop. Yes, the owner doesn't have the best presence with customers. Ironically, once she gets to know you and your children she is wonderful! Maybe she will take a look at the reviews and make a bigger effort with walk ins. As to the shoes and clothing - I also only buy sale clothes, but when I do they last a long time. She is also constantly rotating items into the sale racks. We also go here for our shoes. There is usually plenty of sale options as well, but we do end up paying full price when we want something specific. Customer service with the shoe fitting is excellent! read more

This is my all-time favorite children's clothing store. Love the European brands and sheer volume of choices. The sales rack is extensive, dense enough that you can spend a half hour just browsing through it before you get tempted to look at the pricey stuff. The full priced stuff is WONDERFUL for its beauty & quality and in the same ratio as cost of clothing at Anthropologie for adults, comparable to other online stores that carry the same brands (Izzy & Ash, Olliebollen, etc). Look, its not the Gap or Target but a special occasion outfit? New baby gift? Absolutely. Shoes are fantastic quality, stylish, and my big weakness: hair accessories. The highlight for all of this though, is that the moment we walk into the store, Rita is shouting a hello to us from the back counter - like we're coming to visit an auntie. She knows what brands I prefer, knows my kids, and has an endearing & warm quality about her. Shrewd good judgement and yes, sometimes telling my kids to not be rascals in the store - only because my attention has been on all the wonderful items she has and my kids get restless after a while. I wish I could give this place zero stars. First, based on my own experience the woman that is in the store all the time (not sure if she is the owner) is terribly rude. Every time we have been in there, she follows us around like we are shoplifting, never asking if we need help with anything. Now, for the real zero star story: another mom was here recently with her four year old little boy and left his baseball cap behind while they were there. They knew exactly where they had left it. When the went back to get it, it wasn't there and the owner told them "you're not going to find it". Long story short, the mom and little boy were walking down the street and ran into a father and son who had just purchased the cap from the store! Really?! You're so desperate for a little cash that you take the lost hat of a poor little boy and resell it? Disgusting. read more

I'm feeling generous today so I'll give this place 2 stars, even though they really only deserve one and a half for their clothing. I've been here twice and both times the customer service is HORRIBLE and the lady (owner?) who works there is extremely unfriendly, and actually rude. Neither time was I greeted with even a "hello", but this last time I walked in she did come up to me after a couple minutes and told me to move my 1 1/2 year old daughter away from her display by the window (she wasn't even touching anything). Hello lady, this is a KIDS store, so KIDS are going to come in here. Maybe YOU should think about child proofing the place instead of asking your customers to move their kids!!! She didn't even say please or thank you. I don't know how she manages to stay in business with her bad attitude because it is really quite a turn off. I don't think I'll be going back in there again. There are other kid boutiques around which are child friendly, kind, and helpful. OK, updating my previous post from 2 months ago. Walked in today because I was downtown and again got no sort of welcome at all. The first thing I heard was after 5 minutes of being there, the same rude lady told me to move my daughter because she was playing with the shoes. I would give this place no stars if possible. Not only is the owner (lady) rude and impractical, her stuff is way over priced, especially since most of her Hello Kitty, and Small Paul stuff you can buy at Target for a 1/3rd of the price and you don't have to deal with a crabby old women. This women needs to open a Antique store not a kids clothing/toy/accessories store. Don't get me wrong or think I am cheap, because I am not- I just don't feel that I should have to be treated rudely, when I am paying these type of prices for kids clothing, shoes, etc. The last time I was in here, she immediately started telling me that my 2.5 year old, was breaking a Hello Kitty toy, in reality the apple was removable from the toy- if it's breakable, why have it on the bottom shelf? Then she started to follow us around the store- not saying anything- mind you she never said Hello or greeted us when we came in. Not to mention the return policy is ridiculous. Their are way too many kids clothing stores in the Bay Area, and I won't be going back to one that has a rude owner, or even employee who like I said treats you like your in an Antique store- I mean come on lady- it's a toy- If we broke something, we would pay for it. I wouldn't be surprised if I see a For Lease sign in the window of this place. My kids love going to this store, which makes all the difference--trying on shoes isn't the most interesting activity for kids, so if they're not engaged, it can be pretty painful. Rita, the owner, is fabulous with my kids. She not only remembers their sizes, but also what I've purchased before. She knows their tastes now, and my youngest always loves the dresses Rita picks out for her (my oldest won't wear anything other than Adidas clothes, so much as I'd love to shop at Kids Only for his clothes, it's just not possible--we will shop there for his shoes until we can't shop there anymore!). They have crazy-gorgeous modern (but appropriate) children's clothing: Lily Gaufrette, Pax de Deux, etc. I would agree with Debbie C's review that Rita isn't warm and cuddly when you first walk in but is in fact fabulous once you get to know her. Her gift wrapping is great, too. I should also point out that, even on sale, this is no bargain hunter's paradise. We have been shopping at kids only for 17 years, since my first niece was born. We love Rita and her store. She has the cutest clothes that you won't find anywhere else, they are also of excellent quality. The shoes are the best, my son has an In step and the Primigi shoes are the only shoes with enough support to correct it. Every season I buy Gortex sneakers that I have yet to find anywhere else. If you're looking for something special, you'll find it here. If you're looking for cheap everyday clothes or shoes that won't last and every child has, go to elsewhere. read more

I've been meaning to write a review for this store for a while. We come all the way from Sacramento to shop here. They carry Miki House, a Japanese brand that I LOVE and is very hard to find in the states. My daughter, who is 5 is always treated so nicely by the owner and her daughter...I have no idea what people on here are talking about when they say that the owner is rude. Granted, my daughter is very well behaved..but no child is perfect. But we always receive a warm welcome even though we are only able to come out to Los Altos a couple of times per year. The clothes here are high end. I agree that these are not the brands you'd look for at Target or even at Nordstrom for the most part. It's apples and oranges. We go here specifically for certain brands and are glad to find them on sale much of the time. Love this store and their clothes and will continue to shop there. read more

I would give zero stars if I could. I had a very troubling experience there yesterday when I stopped in with my 4 year old. I was holding his Lightning McQueen baseball cap and set it down on some shoe boxes under a rack of clothes to take a photo of a shirt that I thought a friend would like to come back and purchase. When I was done we left the store, accidentally leaving the baseball cap behind. I realized it about 15 minutes later and went back to the store. I couldn't find it anywhere and inquired with the store owner if she had seen it, etc. She was weirdly evasive. She had absolutely no interest in the fact that my son had lost his favorite hat. I tried to give her my business card and wrote a description of the hat on the back in case it turned up. She just walked away and told me to leave it on the counter. We went outside to look around but kept coming back in the store because we knew that that was where we left it. Every time we came in the owner seemed more annoyed. My son tried to look behind the shoe boxes and the owner even said, "You aren't going to find it." I thought it was all very strange. So strange that I wondered if she sold it! As we were leaving, she said that some kids were by the shoe boxes and implied that one of them must have taken it. As we were walking to our car (my son distraught and me forseeing my life of scouring eBay and the ends of the earth to try to find an identical Lightning McQueen cap) we saw a boy walking down the street with the exact same cap. I asked the father if they just found the cap. He said he just bought it at Kids Only and showed me his receipt. I was shocked! I explained what happened and showed him the photo I had taken in the store that even showed the cap on the shoe boxes. He was extremely kind and just handed us the cap. I offered to go back to the store with him to get his money back. But he said not to worry about it. I'm just flabbergasted that the store owner would do such a thing and also that she would just lie right to my face like that. I like to think that people that are in the business of children actually care about children but she clearly just cares about the bottom line. All I can say is that I will never be setting foot in that store again. read more

Wow - there is such a wide spectrum of reviews here...I live in Los Altos and have been coming in here for years. The clothes are priced about right for the quality and brand. Frankly, this store is more reasonably pricced than some of the other kid clothing shops in downtown. If you're comparing the merchandise to stuff at Target, you're probably not the right demographic for this store. Last I checked, Target wasn't selling Petit Bateau or Baby Lulu. The full priced items are a little high, but everything gets discounted pretty regularly and I always find good deals in there. I have been buying baby gifts for friends in here for years, and the owner always says hello and wraps things beautifully for me. She's not a 'sales'-y person, and she doesn't tend to breathe down your neck as you're browsing, but whenever I've had questions or needed service from her, she has been friendly and responsive. This is the only store where I buy shoes, for both my girls for several years now. Rita knows exactly our taste, our budget, which shoes fit us and wear best (not just look good). Excellent customer service, and a thoughtful selection of beautiful, fun and fashionable clothing -- European designers that aren't found in your typical "big box stores". They have a great Sale rack, but we shop here for special gifts and occasions too. I've recommended them to many of our friends.
