This is such a convenient store in downtown Menlo Park. They have a huge assortment of toys and gifts - ranging from coloring and activity books / children's reading books to sports equipment, Legos, stuffed animals, small tchotchkes. They offer free gift wrapping which is so convenient when you're getting last minute birthday gifts. They do such a great job merchandising, I like coming in to find cool new things to get my kids or bring them to pump up saving / earning something new. You can find some of this on sale / cheaper on Amazon, but it's well worth supporting small and local businesses to keep them around! read more

A big, clean toy story with lots of varieties and brands that you don't typically see in your mainstream toy stores. I felt like a kid again myself going through all the different selections. I'm not sure why these guys aren't rated 5 stars. I was looking for a piggy bank ATM that I'd seen on Amazon but wanted to pick up right away. After searching for toy stores in my area, I found they had it in stock on their website. I called to confirm, and a young lady named Layla answered. She listened to what I was looking for and politely asked if I could hold for a couple of minutes. When she came back, she confirmed they had it, took my name and number, and put it on hold for me. It's worth noting that their price was almost the same as Amazon, but the quality of their product was better. If you're looking for specific toys, do yourself a favor and check them out. Saw this cute store as I was passing by the street to get to another and i couldn't resist to check out what they have. The employees were welcoming as I walked in. They have a large variety of books, toys, dress-up costumes, games,stuff toys, cool science projects, and etc for all ages of children- babies to teenagers. You name it! I've walked by this store dozens of times without venturing in -- and now I'm kicking myself for waiting so long to check it out! This store is a delight. They have a wide variety of thoughtfully curated toys, games, books, and other entertainments for kids of all ages, including the *best* selection of high-quality hand puppets I've seen anywhere. They have all the beloved staples (e.g. several varieties of lock/latch puzzles, the coveted "Sophie," the Manhattan Toy Winkel rattle), plus a wide selection of high quality and thoughtfully curated books and toys we wouldn't even know to want. We walked out with a pair of adorable baby maracas that she won't put down -- high quality and only ~$3 each. My daughter is only 1, but I was mentally noting all the fun items I'll want to come back for when she's older. Looking forward to many years of discovering great playthings here! read more

What you want out of a boutique brick and mortar store - better customer service and trust that the items you buy are of good quality. This store also nicely wraps your purchases for free. Buying online has some convenience and cost savings, but if you don't want to deal with the headache of getting what you pay for (or not pay for), going to a store where you are assured that what you are buying isn't a knockoff and/or defective has value. From my experience, half the fun for my younger kids is the ability to wander the aisles look at a lot of different stuff, hold somethings, and then pick what looks best. Human, particularly kids, still do the best decision making with tangible goods. This store is perfect for that. That doesn't mean if your kids already know *exactly* what they want (because they are older and their friends have it or they saw it on Youtube) you shouldn't save a few bucks and buy it online... but when you are unsure, or worried about whether it is going to be worth it... a friendly face and some expert advice is worth the few extra dollar in my opinion. read more

I absolutely love this toy store. I've been here several times to buy bday presents for my daughter's friends, buy it it's for my daughter and coloring supplies for myself. They sell Melissa and Doug toys which are great and sturdy. They have Farber coloring supplies which are top notch. When I've gone there I usually get stuck in the front but there are tons more choices as you move toward the back - puzzles, games, water toys, dolls, musical instruments, etc. There is also a nice wooden train toward the back of the store which is a nice draw for kids. They do gift wrapping for free and they also have a rewards program. This store is very kid friendly with changing table in the back. Associates can be hit or miss friendly. Otherwise as long as I work near here, I'll be toy shopping here. read more

This store is IMPRESSIVE! With so many toys, I understand why I hear so many children and parents talking about it. The store feels a tiny bit cluttered but the clutter and the huge variety makes it feel more magical... :) I wanted to see if they had Japanese take-apart erasers which, of course, they did! They had 4-packs of food-shaped items for $3.99 and single foods for $1.99. I think the $1.99 price was marked up but the other seemed right... My mom spotted a cute, cozy stuffed animal but it was about $50! So, this store is definitely not cheap. But, if you can afford it, it's pretty adorable! read more

Really good selection and I come here for the variety. You'll find a lot of the popular items from the big chain stores but also others that you might only find online that you can see in person. Even for being a smaller store, I feel that I can find something for every little boy or girl I know just by looking around. Most prices may be 10-15% more, but that's how much you might be paying for shipping anyway if you buy online. And how could you not love a store that does free gift wrapping? read more

Cheeky Monkey is a nice alternative to the big box chain stores (Toys R Us, Target, WalMart). It is great to see a local toy store in downtown Menlo Park and I don't mind paying a bit extra to get access to a better selection of quality toys. They are moving down the street to a larger space this Summer (2007), so hopefully they can address the previous reviewers complaint about a lack of restrooms. read more

I love coming here and seeing the staff as they are usually always friendly and upbeat. Most of them are not only understanding but welcoming of customers which is what drew me to come back often even though I live 30+ mins away. However today's encounter left me feeling a little uneasy , I inquired with one staff member if they would be receiving more stock of collectible items and was met with an annoyed and uninterested attitude towards my question as she let out a sigh to answer me. This is the greatest toy store ever. I have only shopped here for my 3 wonderful "pack and play" nephews. The fun part is you have a great selection of various styles of toys, from wooden, electronic, learning and stuffed. And then for a lost Uncle as I am they wrap the stuff up and make me look domestic. I am a club member so i get a check every few months which I then spoil myself, well because I am more of a kid a heart. read more

Dropped in here the other day, 9 mo old in tow, loved the name and the idea of supporting local businesses! The staff was very helpful and it was a fun store. The baby's eyes were so wide taking everything in. They have lots of toys and games set up to try out and entertain, and I noticed there was something set-up for all age groups. I did not think things were overpriced.... I am sure they were more then Walmart, but they don't have the same things either and I think Toys R Us is more over priced especially for the service, or lack there of. read more

This store has a really nice selection of toys largely intended for very young children, and the free gift wrapping service is a huge bonus. The prices are definitely high (somewhat offset by the free wrapping) which I guess is to be expected from a toy store on Santa Cruz Avenue. In an amusing side note, they were playing rap music comprised largely of the f-bomb and other choice words. One of the mothers in the store was not pleased. read more

Thanks Cheeky Monkey for all your help this past weekend! My little nephew turned 2 and I was doing some toy research to find a "Rody" horse made in Italy. I called ahead to make sure they carried it and the customer service over the phone was a relief. Usually I would associate toy stores with screaming madness and happiness... all crazy, but the staff gave good customer service! I scored a parking spot meanwhile all these gorgeous kids are trick or treating in the downtown Menlo area, it was adorable, you couldn't let the traffic get to you, even if you were in a hurry.... which I was, and having Cheeky Monkey as one of my errands, was smooth and I'm thankful! I was greeted immediately, and I know from experience to just ask for help right away when help is presented, after all, they know the store layout the best. I was handed a Rody inflatable horse and that put a very big smile on my face. The store also offered to inflate it for me, but I opted for the free gift wrap instead. I was scared, because that meant I would have to trek back and chance not finding a parking spot, of course to my luck, I found one right in front. It was as easy as they said, just walk on back and find your name on the present, and there it was! The staff was again very friendly and helpful. I love kids, and its nice to know that the people who work for a kids shop like cheeky monkey toys know a thing or two about customer service, efficiency, and patience. One thing I will have to say is I thought I got a red Rody, but I got a Silver one. It's not a big deal, I actually like the silver colored one, especially now that its in our family, but one constant reminder when shopping for or with kids, is always take an extra moment and double check your purchase, kids make everything a little wild! but that's what makes life fun! We love this local toy store! They carry a great selection of high-quality toys, and your kid has the opportunity to actually *play* with most of the toys. We'll go here, and my kids will spend about an hour with the various toys. With there being a shortage of cheap, plasticky items, there's less of a chance of one of those becoming the desired item I have to live with in my home :/ I've noticed that, perhaps to be competitive with online retailers, they tend to sell only toys that either are unavailable on amazon.com, or for which amazon.com does not offer deep discounts. I'm glad they're able to survive, because toy shopping SHOULD be a fun, happy, exploratory experience, and that's what you get here at Cheeky Monkey. So you window shoppers who intend to just go on amazon.com after - don't bother; just keep this great shop going, you'll find the pricing similar. read more

I will give this place 1 star for potential at first glance. Otherwise it is DOWNHILL from there. Although it looks as if it is the perfect place to buy toys ( and I buy a lot for my child) The service is terrible.... actually TERRIBLE!!! They woman who was behind the counter when I was there was not helpful, VERY rude and when I was going to pay for an item I asked to have it gift wrapped.... she huffed and puffed ( I was the only one in the store) and told me it was very incomvenient for her to wrap my gift (even though the sign says free gift wrap with every purchase) because they were closing in 25 minutes!! Seriously.....but it was very convenient to take my $$$$? No thank you and I will never set foot in that store again read more

What a fun store for both adult and kids! It's our must-go place after a nice Sunday brunch in downtown Menlo Park. For me the pros of this store definitely outweighs the sometimes slightly-higher prices. Pros: * great selection of toys, some books, and even clothing * free gift-wrapping, which is super helpful for me * lots of hands on, try-out toys (i.e. train table, lego table, doll house, kitchen/cooking play items) Cons: * prices may be high for certain items, but I would probably ask to see if they do price-matching w/ other local toy stores (like Palo Alto Toy & Sport, or Adventure Toys) As for staff, they've been more than courteous and helpful through the last 3 years that I've visited. They helped with searching for particular items, gift-wrapping, answering questions, and even directing us to their bathroom w/o an attitude. The most annoying thing related to that store is probably trying to tear our kids away from it. read more

Wow, we came in just window-shopping, and ended up getting some really cute stuff for my neice- a little necklace with letters spelling her name (I got to play haha), a little Elmo puppet (yah, my SIL sold out to Disney a long time ago), and educational flip-cards for grandmas' house to play/ learn from. They have amazing toy selection, something for everyone's budget, and they are expanding their newborn selections. Yay, I'll be back when I get closer to my EDD (Aug 2009) to pick up a few things after our showers are done..... Wish they had a registry of some kind so I could register for the really neat eco-friendly and educational toys and games I saw there. They have these interesting "science experiments" like Make a Radio out of a Potato, and Water & Battery Powered Coke Can Cars, stuff my neice and nephew out of town love to do. And priced at $15 a game, they're just right to add to the ole "Care Package from Auntie" that I send every so often. Oh, and the best part- free gift wrap, they stayed open at least 1/2 hr after their posted closing time and didn't rush the last customers out the door, and the sales lady/ manager thanked me and handed me my gift-wrapped items (also FREE, yay) by name. Yup, she caught my name when I registered, remembered it, and thanked me by my name when she gave me the presents, and said "see you soon, mama!". VERY personable.
