Our local ballet studio has had a long time working relationship with the studio, so picking up the required ballet shoes for my daughter's ballet uniform was a breeze. As soon as I mentioned my daughter attends Bayer for ballet, the person on the phone told me "Oh we have the shoe in stock in all sizes," without even needing to have me ask if she had the style. The lady who helped us was friendly and helped us try on a few sizes so we could get a good fit. We were in and out of there in fifteen minutes. What a wonderful store! I called in need of some last-minute leotards and Isabella was very helpful in answering my questions. When I arrived, she had already set aside a few sizes of the leotard I needed so I could decide which was best. She also helped me find another leotard that I needed and was so kind and helpful. This is specifically about the pointe shop fittings that we have gone for twice already. I hate to give this place a bad review, but I feel that other families who do not know much about ballet need to know this. It's the first time I feel my review has ethical implications because many more girls' feet may be damaged as a result! This place is recommended by my daughter's dance studio. I did not know any other places (nor other dance families) and assumed this must be a good place to get fitted for pointe. Unfortunately, after 2 pairs and hundreds of dollars spent, my daughter learned that there are many types of pointe shoes, with different box widths, vamp depth/height etc. and she had been fitted with the wrong type of pointe shoes. There was no mention of any of these factors to consider when my daughter went for her fitting. No questions asked that should have been asked at pointe shoe fittings, e.g. "Is the vamp too high?" whatsoever. She was simply told that they only carried one brand, and that a particular style of that brand "fits most people" and then she tried on 2 sizes of the same make and brand of pointe, and then asked to rise on pointe. The first pair was too tight within a very short span of time, and we went in for a longer pair. Now, my daughter finally realizes why her pointe shoes cut into her feet and why her toes sink too deep into the box and all sorts of problems. She was fitted with the wrong type of pointe shoe! After doing my research and shamelessly approaching non-friends who have ballet experience, I realized that a good pointe shoe fitting is nothing like what my daughter has experienced at this place. I felt conned, actually. To think I gave this place so much support! I'm writing this because every parent needs to know what to look out for before you let your child go for a pointe fitting, especially the first time. Do not simply go to the recommended shop and believe that the staff would know which shoe fits your child. read more

My 13 year old daughter is in her 5th year. She has danced en pointe for one year. In this year, we have been to two other stores and she has been through four pairs of pointe shoes. None of the shoes were correct for my daughter's feet. Not one of the stores took the time & care that Lisa did to get my daughter into the correct pair of pointe shoes. Lisa requires you to book an appointment for your first fitting at the store. I know, the last thing you need is another thing that has to be scheduled, but it is worth it. Try to plan ahead as she is booked out several weeks, but if you are flexible with your time she may be able to accommodate you. She spent 1.5 hours focused on getting my daughter into the correct shoe and educating her about proper care of her feet, toes, and body to prevent injury. After finding a great pair of shoes we moved to the register. At the register, the education continued. After pulling out the perfect ribbons and elastics, Lisa demonstrated how to find the exact placement for them and explained how to sew them on the shoe. She educated us on why this method was superior to the way my daughter's shoes had previously been sewn. I am so glad that we were able to take the time to meet with Lisa. Go in with an open mind and ready to be educated about things that you may never have been taught in your many years of ballet instruction. Lisa is looking out for the health of the dancer. I appreciate her candidness with us. My daughter felt heard in a way that no other store had made her feel. Not only that, but by looking at my daughter's past shoes, Lisa already knew the problem before my daughter spoke a word. We left with a shoe that fixes an issue my daughter had been fighting with for a year in her other shoes. read more

OMG!! I absolutely loved my visit at the Dance Theatre Shop! I went there for a pointe shoe fitting and the owner, Lisa, actually buddied me up with a friend from my studio who was coming for a fitting on the same day!!! I didn't feel alone at all with my friend there and I'm still amazed at Lisa for making that awesome arrangement! Lisa was SO nice! She gave me and my friend an extremely thorough explanation about the pointe shoes, stretches and warm-ups, toe-pads, spacers, etc. She was so patient with us and always stopped when either of us had a question and always had a friendly answer. For the interior, I would say it was really elaborate. There were boxes upon boxes of soft slippers, pointe shoes, jazz shoes, tap shoes, you name them all! They also had stretching bands, and I don't see very many of those in other shops. I really liked that they had cute decorations on top of the shoe shelves, 'cause it gave the store a nice little touch. Overall, I really enjoyed my visit! Whether you're going there for a pointe fitting, a new leotard, or just an adorable keychain, it is the perfect place for all of those things! I took my 11 yr old daughter here to get fitted for her first pair of pointe shoes. Lisa was VERY knowledgable and helped make the whole experience positive for both my daughter and I. Lisa values the importance of educating the dancer on the proper care, fit  and do's & don'ts of pointe shoes. She also went into great detail on correct way to sew ribbons and bands to the shoe.  I'm certain this will be information my daughter as a new dancer on pointe will always remember. I originally called the shop frantic the day before my daughter's performance to secure a couple pairs of transitional tights. Lisa, the owner, assisted me over the phone and in person. She was very professional, knew her inventory, and provided my daughter and I with an instant relief knowing we were in good hands. They have a wide selection of dance clothes and shoes. But the staff, while courteous, is completely apathetic. No matter how cheerful you are, they won't crack a smile. They don't offer information, but will answer your questions when you ask. It is a bit frustrating because it seems like they don't really know enough to help you properly. I was a newbie to dance shoes and was hoping for someone with experience to help me out. It felt like the people who work there barely knew more than me or didn't care to share their knowledge. Went here to buy three pairs of dance shoes - ballet shoes, tan jazz shoes and black jazz shoes. I bought all three Bloch pairs for $115 which was pretty steep - if you have the money and urgently need shoes, this is your one stop shop - EXCEPT .. they did not have the Bloch black jazz shoes I needed. They were out of the basic black jazz shoe so I had to buy the more upscale shoe. I returned the black jazz and ballet shoe and got back $85 - I bought both shoes online for $45 and got free shipping.. saved so much! (I only didn't get the tan because they were sold out on all websites). When I went to return the shoes, I got the tan shoe in a half size bigger. The woman who fitted me initially, allowed me to try on both sizes. When I went back to get the bigger size, I already knew the bigger shoe would fit. The same service representative did not give me a choice, and made me try on the shoe again. I told her twice that I already knew it would fit, but she ignored me and in a rude manner told me to do it anyway. Was inconvenient to do so in the amount of time I had, and with the million layers I was wearing. This store is way over priced - I would HIGHLY recommend going online! If you need a quick ballet slipper, ok....but if you're looking for friendly and helpful service, go elsewhere or go online. The woman who fits pointe shoes (Lisa?) is downright condescending. She was completely unhelpful and made me feel like an idiot. In fact, of the three people who were working in the store, not one person smiled. I felt like I was bothering them by just walking into the store. Is it so miserable to help a paying customer? I was friendly and honest with my questions regarding pointe shoes (both of my daughters are on pointe but we bought them at Victorias in San Jose) -- and the fitter at Capezio made me feel like everything I had done for my daughters was WRONG and wouldn't be able to help me for a month. And refused to sell me replacement elastics because she "reserves" them for her pointe customers. Doesn't she realize that I could have very well become a pointe customer had she not been so rude?! I left Capezio in Mt. View determined to buy everything from Discount Dance Supply from now on. It's no wonder all the small local dance stores are closing. Online is cheaper and I don't have to deal with rude and condescending salespeople. read more

Bought some slippers here and I think it was Natasha that helped me. She was quite patient with me as I went through at least 4 sizes of Bloch elastosplits. They're not a common shoe and I was surprised that they carried them. The shoes were the same as the retail price (I checked on my phone) so at least with this product, I know they did not jack up the price. For the lady that was asked whether or not she was gonna buy her shoes online: they don't necessarily do this b/c they're jaded. You are a self-professed beginner and they want to make sure you have the right fit. I see plenty of adult beginners in poor fitting shoes, unsewn/incorrectly placed elastics, etc. I know it's a lot to take in but it's worth considering that you are going to them for their expertise and even if they seem brusque, it's not always about them making a sale. In re: discounts - they have a discount for shows. I don't remember the percentage exactly and if it just applies to shoes but they do have it and you need to ask for it. FYI: Many parents might not like it but Lisa is a bit of a hardass. There are lots of studios that are willing to put kids into pointe shoes before they're ready (ie. old enough, strong enough, flexible enough, had enough instruction, etc.). I've seen her work and she calls it like she sees it. It's purely professional and from what I've seen, she's quite thorough. Put it this way - would you rather have your daughter have her feelings hurt or risk her injuring herself? Dance studios have liability insurance for that but she has her name and reputation to protect. read more

I had a very good experience here. I wondered in to see if they carried any Bloch European Balance pointe shoes. Lisa did an amazing job with the fitting and accessing my feet; she's thorough and takes her time. I'm impressed, because she could tell right away what type of shoe I needed. Usually when I go to other places, they make me try on practically every shoe in the store until they settle for one that kind of fits. Nope, Lisa just brought out two different types and sure enough, they fit like they were meant for me. Originally, I told her I wanted to get both pairs and experiment with them. She actually advised against it and recommended that I try one pair and work with those; she didn't want me to like one pair more than the other and be left with a pair of shoes I didn't like. I was happy with her honesty. She explained that what's the most important to her is in the interest of the dancer and not merely selling a shoe. The store is also stocked with a good selection of dance wear. I saw lots of cute leotards and warm-ups for class. I would definitely recommend this location. Note: Lisa's pointe shoe fittings are done only by appointment, but she was nice enough to give me her undivided attention even though I didn't have one. I lucked out, but I wouldn't recommend doing this. The store can get pretty busy especially in the afternoons. Don't be afraid to give a call- she's really nice :) read more

We had friends visiting from outside the country whose daughter just started ballet. They wanted to find a dance store while here and since we were planning to be in Mountain View, I tracked down Capezio online. What a great find, I didn't even have a chance to check Yelp before heading over. Lisa was wonderful, very kind to my friends who speak broken English and helped them figure out the best outfits and shoe/slipper fitting despite their daughter not being with them. I wish I had known about the importance of a good fit when I was in ballet....many years ago. Lisa was also patient and gave good advice as selecting attire and figuring out various details took some time and effort. Our friends returned home this week and from what I hear, their purchases were a success. Lisa made their first trek into the world of dance attire a less frightening experience -- they have already requested my help for future purchases and Lisa provided great tips regarding how we can work out long-distance specifics for proper slipper and attire selections. Took my daughter to buy tap shoes today. A very professional woman helped us with the fitting, brought us several pairs to try on until my daughter was comfortable with the shoe. I liked that they had every half size in stock so that there was the ability to try on each size and really find the best fit. Prices are fair, very reasonable considering the level of service and the quality of the shoe (from what I've seen so far!) I'll definitely be coming back for all our dance needs. if you're a dancer, or aspiring to be a dancer, this is the place to come to stock up on everything from shoes to clothing to accessories. they carry men's, women's and children's dance shoes (flat and heeled). as far as clothing goes, i've only ever seen outfits for women and children. prices are very fair, as tops will run about $20, socks are under $10, and shoes are at the expected range of $60 and up. the store is small, so selection will be limited compared to larger capezio stores, but they have pretty much everything you will need to dance your feet happy. read more

This Capezio saved me. I'd ordered a brown leotard and matching shorts from an online dance supplier, and the supplier accidentally sent me 2 pairs of brown shorts. Yikes! With a dance show only days away, I frantically called around until locating this Capezio. The friendly woman who answered the phone let me know that she had 2 styles in brown and reassured me that I didn't need to put any on hold. The store is located in an intimate shopping center on El Monte with a one way entrance and exit system. If you miss the first driveway, you risk running into exiting traffic (however, I found the little strip mall to be quiet, and didn't have issues). The Capezio had just what I needed. They carried a camisole style brown number with a low back as well as a halter style, the latter of which would work perfectly with my existing flesh colored leotards. I picked up the halter leotard as well as a pair of fishnets, as I have this thing about always carrying backup tights with me to a show. (You never know when you'll need them....) Thank goodness for Capezio! The leotard worked perfectly in performance and allowed our "Lion King" piece to go off without a hitch. read more

I was SO happy to find a new dance store and have been in several times to buy clothing, etc. The store is tidy and well-stocked on leotards (they are pricey though) but today I had a really bad experience and left as a very unhappy customer. I had come in looking for a specific ballet slipper a few days ago and they didn't have it so the woman helping me fitted me in her recommended slipper instead. They were very pretty, but when I wore them that night in class I literally had to stop every 5 minutes in class to pull them back on, completely didn't work! I checked the receipt and nowhere does it say that you can't return anything worn or that you can't return shoes. It says this nowhere in the store and no one ever mentioned it in person either. Now look, I'm completely realistic about the fact that you can't resell used shoes, but you can send them back to the manufacturer as defective and you can at least admit when you make a mistake. When I brought them back today the woman there told me that it says right on the receipt that you can't return anything worn. I pointed out that it did NOT say that at all and showed her and she said it must be an old draft...I bought the shoes just a few days ago...an old draft, really? Besides, why is that my problem? It only says that they give store credit and that you need a receipt within 30 days to return. I would really have been more than happy with store credit and would have happily spent more money in the store. So I asked if they could order the shoes for me to try on and buy that I was initially looking for in the first place and the answer was no. It was really awkward and it seems to me there was much more they could have done customer service wise. I would really like to continue to shop here, but come on guys, get your customer service together. I don't often leave a store in a huff. read more

Lisa was not a nice fitter. And now I just found out how she did not care to fit any adult ballerinas or just purely lacks fitting knowledge. She has put all the women who go on pointe in my studio into Bloch European Balance. She looked my feet when they were not pointed and put them in that as well. After two classes, I was sinking in my shoes as European Balance has a square and wide box. I got refitted somewhere else and I was told that I have tapered toes when pointed which are the positions the toes will be in when on pointe. I got refitted with tapered box and was never sinking since. In addition, she was quite mean. Very impatient on the phone when making the appointment and then gave me a whole stupid lesson on how to tendu when i was getting fitted. And of course just bad attitude throughout the entire fitting. So sick of someone dominating the dance business in the area. read more

After searching online for several weeks and a few attempts of purchase/return, I decided to go to this shop despite that some reviews mentioned how rude the shop owner was. I think she did seem abrupt, but more because she was trying to find out what you need, what you want and what they have as soon as possible. I've visited another dance wear store in Menlo Park and the pricing at Dance Theatre Shop is much more reasonable. It was also nice to be able to try on leotards and feel the material first hand. Finally! A place for us zumbanatics to get the perfectly fitted shoe. With dance sneakers running as many as 3-4 too small/big and sizing being so brand specific, this store was such a huge savings. Now I can stop buying every split sole online and hoping that they fit! This place had at least 4 brands and 10 varieties to try on. The best part is that the owner is an expert fitter, she really knew her stuff and when I followed her lacing instruction, the shoe was so much more comfortable! Who knew!? Took my daughter there for her first set of pointe shoes. We first went on a Saturday not understanding that a fitting was needed, and for that an appointment was needed. I'm so glad that this shop doesn't just sale you a pair of shoes and send you out the door. Lisa sat with my daughter for over an hour explaining the importance of taking care of your shoes, your feet, and your body. Explaining what exercises would be beneficial, etc. I'm very happy that Lisa chooses to run her business this way, focusing more on the people than just selling a product. Going to Dance Theater Shop was overall a horrible experience!! My friend and I went to the store for a pointe shoe fitting, Lisa (the owner) was very rude and criticized the teaching of my dance studio. We were beginner pointe dancers and she told us in a very mean tone "You should not be doing your showcase on pointe." She talked to me like I knew nothing about ballet, even though I've been dancing for 10+ years. She sold me Bloch Hanna's like many others at my studio. She then proceeded to tell my friend I was sickling in the pointe shoes she sold me, behind my back! This is the worst experience I have ever had at a dance store!!!!! I came here for my third first pointe fitting. My real first pointe fittings was at Prima Dance, I came out with shoes too big and when I can back to do a refitting I came out with shoes that were too small. Overall horrid experience, so I decided to come here because I heard Lisa was great with the fittings. I came in the morning so Lisa was the only one working. She had to leave me every now and then to help someone else during our pointe fitting. I didn't really mind. First, before I even got to try on pointe shoes she talked to me about hygiene and nail care (unlike Prima Dance). I felt that she really cared about getting me to be safe and happy versus Prima Dance who wanted to sell me a pair of shoes. Then, she made me plié, releve, and tendu. After that she got out 3 pairs and everything after that went smoothly. VERY difference from Prima Dance. Instead of being asked for "how does that feel?" all the time Lisa can see my foot sinking into a shoe, not getting over the box, ect. The things there are a bit pricey (a mesh bag was $11, I got mine in the mall for $1.50). Pros: 1. Lisa 2. The store has lots of cute things 3. I got a really nice pair of shoes (though Lisa didn't check my right foot which was bigger than my left, the pair I got was a bit tight for my right foot) Cons: 1. Only Bloch pointe shoes (Lisa said there was only 7 styles) 2. Only ouch pouches are sold 3. Pointe fittings are not available every working day. (I had to wait 3 days because Lisa doesn't work on certain days) read more

Very good pointe shoe fitting experience. My daughter's current shoe no longer held up to increased amounts of practice. The store owner was knowledgeable and extremely helpful. She selected 2 different shoes, 1 of which we chose. It fits well, is strong without being hard or loud, and looks very pretty. Great to have this experience to draw on for young dancers. I went in for ballet slippers and had such a strange experience in this store. When I first walked in I was greeted and asked if I needed help and I said I was looking for slippers. I was told to have a seat, and told in a way that sounded like an order. It was like I wasn't allowed to just look around. I'm sure I could have said I just wanted to look around first but I didn't bother. I sat and we got started with figuring out what I needed. I'm a new dancer and didn't really know anything about ballet slippers (and still don't) so I had questions, but every question was treated with suspicion and I never really got them answered. For example, when I asked about sizes and how to figure out my size I was pretty much asked outright if I was just trying on there so I could buy online. I figured the person helping me was just jaded, but it still didn't feel good. I told her I didn't know where I was going to buy; I was shopping. After that she started backpedaling and she did help me find slippers so I got what I needed, but the whole thing was just awkward. Even the fitting was emotionally uncomfortable, because I told her up front that I was a new dancer but she kept using all the ballet terms for different foot positions while we were checking the fit of different slippers, asking me questions like I was experienced. I know nothing about the ballet world but the whole thing was strange. Like understanding ballet slipper sizing is some sort of trade secret....? And you're not allowed to start as a beginner, you have to start as an intermediate? It seems to me if you can't justify the value of buying at your retail location because of your in-person customer service and quality over buying online, you shouldn't have a retail location. Plus, if you're helping someone who says they're a new dancer maybe be a little supportive about it. Had I felt that I might have hung out longer and gotten a leotard or something, but as it was I just got what I needed and split. I doubt I'll go back. read more
