This place has been around for a very long time. More locals and regulars go to the place. The food is decent and some days better than other. Some of the staff is more polite than others. I will say with the inflation their prices have changed. Still not that expensive and you do get a big portion. The fries are usually soggy but other than that. I've never had a bad bite lol. This is the place for you if you like small diners

Quick, affordable meal. Cash only. During COVID-19, they are open for dine in and take out. None of the employees are wearing masks. We were driving through the area and stopped here for a quick meal and to use the restroom. We ordered a salad with chicken tenders, coleslaw, and a pimento cheese sandwich. We used the bathrooms (convenient, but dirty) and then waited for our meal at the bar. Our order was quickly prepared and was accurate. We enjoyed the meal. The sandwich was full of pimento cheese. The salad was made with fresh ingredients and topped with thin pieces of crispy chicken. Although we enjoyed the meal, we likely will not return due to the location and the non existent mask policy.

There Jim Rivers has been setting up his steel hot dog stand for nearly 14 years now, and is there almost everyday beginning at 11:30 - he misses some days because he also sets up at the North Carolina State Fair each year. He steams his weiners - Red Hots (neon red Southern weiner)for $1,50, Nathans All Beef for $2.00, Jalapeno (with the pepper already in the weiner) for $2.50, and a Sausage dog, also for $2.50. His toppings(whatever you want at no additional charge) include mustard, ketchup (ugh!), chili, onions, slaw, mayo (double ugh!), cheese, sauerraut, red onion (foo foo), and relish (we get visitors from the far north). The Red Hot is your basic Southern Chili dog with a weiner of questionable parentage, chile, onions and/or slaw, on a nice, soft bun. This is a very good hot dog. The chili is not home made since the All Knowing, All Seeing Wake County government has decided that only brick and mortar restaurants can prepare such items in their duly and regularly inspected kitchens - this apparently is true even if the rating is not particularly good. Jim uses Patterson's Grand Slam All Beef Chili, which is available in 5 pound tubs or #10 cans. This is very good commercially prepared chili, right up there with Matinee brand used by Allen & Son in Chapel Hill. The Nathan's All Beef hot dog with chili, mustard, and Jim's slaw is an outstanding slaw dog - one of the best I've tried, and I've tried more than a few. The quality of the weiner reals comes thru, and is very well showcased by the soft bun, tasty chili, and not too sweet mayo based slaw. On my next visit, I'll try the Jalapeno dog and the Sausage dog instead of the All Beef - well, probably in addition too it. Jim is friendly and personable, the service is quick, the pricing reasonable - there is no seating available, but sitting in an airconditioned auto munching several dogs ain't at all bad.

I had occasion to be in Burlington at lunch one day recently, and decided I needed to stop in. Zack's definitely fits that "area establishment" vibe, and people were coming in and out quickly... now I see why. They get you moving fast! I share John C's thoughts: Within about 15 seconds, a gentleman asked what we wanted. We had barely gotten the menu out when he said, "We have hamburgers and hot dogs. Hot dogs come with chili, onions, and slaw." Unlike John C I opted for chili cheese fries, because I am a glutton for punishment, but otherwise, got the hot dogs the same way, but add cheese. Food was out in a flash, and like John, i kind of wish more care was put into it to up the quality. I don't need my stuff lightning fast. Anyhow, just to be honest, I didn't care for the overall flavor of anything in particular. The hot dog franks and bun were pretty average, no toasting or buttering, frank was barely warm. The chili was HEAVY on cumin and pretty much overpowered everything, including the cheese. Chili cheese fries were a bit better, you could kind of thin out the chili and bring more balance to the cheese sauce. I ate these with a fork. I think if I visited again, I would go the burger route and get these for my chili cheese fix. Overall, I am glad to try an area staple, but it just wasn't my thing. At a place like this, there is surely a regular fan base that likes it exactly how it is, and I would never want to change that. Do your thing for them, it just wasn't my thing!

The grandson of the original owner sold the business in 2021, after of 80 years of ownership by the same family. Things have changes some, there is not the cozy feel of a family spot, none of the wait staffs that had been there for years remain, the replacement are mainly young and a bit distracted. The three main components that made the hot dog here great generally remain - great chili, soft buns, and Zack's made in house hot sauce. The dogs on this visit were very good, but I will get them to go in the future.
