Every self-respecting North Carolina town needs an old-school hot dog joint, and The Dog House, in operation since 1942, fits the bill for High Point. Places like this carry a few expectations: simple-but-good food served up by friendly folks in a no-frills environment at a reasonable price. The Dog House checked a few of those boxes, but not enough to make me eager to return. Positives first: the vibe here is appreciably classic. The booths and stools let you feel like you've entered a time warp. The Dog House also turns around orders with impressive speed. When I stopped by to pick up lunch to go, I was out the door in a matter of minutes. That said, the food here rates as only OK. The buns are soft, but the hot dogs, while certainly not bad, are nothing special. They are also not as cheap as you might think: $3 base price and then $1.75 each for kraut and relish. One can understand that much of an upcharge for bacon, but a nearly $5 hot dog here felt like a reach. If you want a hot dog in a hurry or want to experience a slice of local history, The Dog House will scratch that itch. Otherwise, there are better lunch options. read more

The property that houses The Dog House currently was purchased several years ago, and a make over of the exterior has ruffled some feathers - some folks need to get a hobby, a job, or a sense of humor - the excellent hot dogs and burgers are fixed on the INSIDE, and remain great! I've eaten dogs here for years, always on a to go basis - this spot has never grabbed me as a cozy, sit for a while place - I like the dogs but choose to eat in the car, somewhere on N. Main Street! Now, to what is not mundane, these folks make a really solid hot dog, and the burger ain't bad. On this visit, I again went with the single Chili Dog - a winner and again wrapped in nostalgia - as you get older there is little that is not wrapped in nostalgia. This is certainly an out of the way place in the ritzy part of High Point (as judged by the buildings and businesses in the vicinity). You'll need your GPS or will drive right by it. There's street parking on Saturdays but most use the lot behind the building. The front entrance is mainly for take out but after that it's a small straight place with counter service on one side and booths on the other. You can see immediately why they don't want solo diners taking up precious booth space. The staff is friendly and the noise level what you'd expect. I did like the varied options they had for toppings and went with the beef dogs: one all the way (mustard chili onions) and the other with grilled sauerkraut. No forks in sight, all finger food. Both dogs were delicious though the chili wasn't anything that would make you go yummmm. And I like a good decadent chili dog. The fries were hot and crispy. And they do a good job of refilling your drink. Food wise, I'd go back but price wise, with the up charge for the beef dog and extra for the kraut, the price was steeper than what I'd consider reasonable for a hot dog meal ($15). Add in tip and that rivals many restaurant meals elsewhere. But then, I've never understood how hot dogs can be almost as expensive as hamburgers when you go out. Anyway, it was on my places to try. A High Point institution in the truest sense of the word. If you grew up in High Point, you have been here for hot dogs and burgers. Periodt. Nowadays, if you even know where this place is (despite being located on the busiest street in town) you probably also grew up here, just because of how rapidly the area around it is changing. I hope it continues to be there, because it's as much a part of High Point history as anything. All that said, it had been many years since I stopped in here for a hot dog. Lately I have been on a kick to go back and revisit all the places that I have some nostalgia for, to see how they are holding up. There has been better than I remember, worse, and then places like this that haven't changed at all (besides the prices, of course). You can still count on this place for a no frills, classic, speedy hot dog experience. Be REALLY careful when you order, as they have a different definition of "All the Way" than the entire rest of the state of North Carolina. If you want slaw with your chili, onions, mustard.... you actually want LOADED. This is confusing honestly, as I have literally never been anywhere in this state where All the Way didn't mean the same thing. The hot dog itself is good, tastes the same as I remember. Quality frank with a thin but OK chili and good slaw. The fries are also the kind I really enjoy, crispy, a slight battering on the outside. Things could get kicked up a notch with a buttered and grilled bun, which once you go that direction, it's hard to enjoy a plain bread hot dog again (Thanks PB's and Dairi-O). All this happens fast, and reasonably priced. Overall, it doesn't crack my top 5 hot dogs in the Triad, but if I were working near downtown, I certainly would consider it a regular spot for speed and convenience. Another good one! The Dog House on North Main in High Point has been serving up hot dogs and burgers from the same location since 1942! Chili and slaw are housemade daily. Buns are fresh and soft. Slaw has touch of sweetness. Onions are fresh and crunchy. Chili could be meatier, but has good flavor. A LOADED dog has slaw, mustard, chili, and onions. They're a bit messy. As I have said about others, a toasted bun would mage this good dog great. Open Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. It can be a little hard to spot (small sign), but your GPS will take you right there. They say the burgers are great, too. read more

The hot dog was really good and really cooked well. The cheeseburger was one of the best burgers I may have ever hadin this area. I can't wait to go back. It sounds silly now, but I thought this place was a bar - clever name 'The Dog House'? Eh? Duhh.... It's a hot dog place, and these hot dogs are gooood!! So a local who is a coworker told me about the classic and simple, no fuss menu. This place has been here since the 40's! The cash register is the cutest ever- the drawer is wood and the ancient buttons aren't used for calculating anymore. @thedoghouse1942 is a straightforward and easy place to get a quick delicious lunch My food was out in minutes on a wax paper sheet. The services was excellent! Friendly staff that makes sure you have what you need. They mentioned that the buns are steamed, and the staff was eating at the establishment on lunch break- a sure sign of a good find. I ordered a Beef Loaded Dog and a Beef Kraut Dog, with chips as a side just in case. They have fries too. I got a 1/2 Cheerwine, 1/2 Pepsi suggested by the lovely waitress when I asked for cherry Pepsi. So glad I know this place is for hot dogs and more now. Yum!!!! read more

This is a three star joint if there ever was one. As far as the food is concerned everything is good, but that's just about it--good. Before I discuss the food, however, I would like to state that the service was outstanding--the servers were pleasant, cheerful, and attentive. That said, I ordered a hot dog all the way (they call it "Loaded"), a cheeseburger, and french fries. Hot dog: I wish they would toast the bun, but it might not have mattered because it turned pretty soggy by the end. The chili, as has been reported by other Yelpers, is very thin, but has a decent flavor. The slaw was very tasty and leaned sweet. The wiener itself was the light colored kind and was very mild--it's flavor was completely lost in the equation. Cheeseburger: I ordered a single, but a double would have been better. It had a nice, simple flavor. Once again, it was good, but not great. French fries: They were good, but have a coating on them, and as I have stated before, I just don't care for that. Overall, I would only recommend The Dog House if you are immediate area. But keep your eyes peeled--this place is very easy to miss. If you want to spice things up a bit, show up in full Duke regalia--this is a UNC place based on the items adorning the walls. read more

This is a great place to stop for lunch! The service is friendly and the food comes out fast! I do agree with what other reviewers have said though, the chili is a just a bit to thin for my taste. I enjoy it a bit heartier, I like meat on my meat! However I would most certainly come back for those fried bologna sandwiches. They remind me of when I was a kid because we use to eat fried bologna sandwiches all the time, for breakfast even. I haven't had one in years! In my opinion the only way to ever really enjoy bologna is if it is fried. You also really can't beat the price, for two hot dogs with a lot of toppings and a fried bologna sandwich it was about $8. The patrons were very nice, but the staff was too busy for pleasantries. The menu is tacked to the wall at every booth. CASH ONLY and you better read how to place your order because if you are used to saying ATW and getting mustard, slaw, chili and onions, you will be disappointed. A little man came back in and said he didn't get slaw. She told him he got what he ordered and if he wanted everything, he should've said Loaded. Yikes. The price is the same so I'm not sure why she just didn't give him a little container of slaw. We upgraded to the all beef dog and got it loaded. We also ordered a double cheeseburger. The condiments are free but there is an up charge for everything else - see menu pic. They were out of fries so the only option was bagged chips. Pass. They understand the definition of double CHEESEburger because each patty had cheese. Show of hands: who else gets aggravated when a double cheeseburger only has one piece of cheese? The burgers were very bland so I had to add quite a bit of salt and ketchup. My burger had 6 pieces of very tough gristle. They were small but that just made it worse because I had to chew like a baby to try and separate the gristle from the meat. The beef hotdog itself was good as was the steamed bun. The slaw tasted like bulk slaw at the grocery. The chili is watery, had no flavor and didn't add anything of value to the dog. They are very clear that you need to order, eat and get out. Don't go here expecting to chat or relax over lunch. We parked behind the building and spaces are really limited. They have a front and back door and you wait to seat yourself. I knew my visit to The Dog House would be great when I got a prime parking spot right in front of the store front on Main street. Feeling like a VIP, I strutted inside. If you come in from Main Street you'll encounter the "to go" order counter first. Seat yourself if you want to dine in. I saddled up to the counter and was greeted immediately. A kind woman took my drink order (Cheerwine, of course) and let me look over the menu. I settled on two dogs "slaw style" (chili, slaw, mustard) and fries. My food was ready in less than 2 minutes. As other folks have said, the chili is different, more liquid than solid and poured generously over the dog. You're going to need multiple napkins for this one. While I prefer a toasted bun, the soft bun with the runny chili just kinda worked. The fact that it made a huge mess positively impacted my experience. The fries were top notch very crispy and well seasoned. My server and I spoke for a bit about the business and how it has changed over the years. I think she was a bit nostalgic for the old days of a really busy Main Street. On the way out, I asked for directions to High Point University and everyone was very helpful.
