This place doesn't serve anything that taste lie those corn dogs you may think you're ordering. The dogs there are k-dogs. What are those you may ask? They were amazing. Next time I'll try half cheese and half meat, but for the first time I ordered the full beef sausage dog. I had 2 Pluto's but with different toppings. Little did I know as a meat wrapped in hushpuppies on a stick fan in my youth, that the humble corn dog could evolve to this. Oh wait, yes I did! The truck is owned and run by current and former students, and you can find them parked typically in the parking lot of College Park Baptist Church on Josephine Boyd street. This is right across the street from the UNCG athletic fields, on the corner with Walker Avenue. I got the "Sun" with full sausage, which just means, instead of going half cheese half meat, I just went full meat. I'd normally rush for the halvsies, but have had a lot of cheese lately! The sun comes topped flamin hot cheetos crumbles, and I went with their spicy mayo and mustard swirled on top at the recommendation of the staff. This was a GREAT decision. What a phenomenal food truck here in Greensboro! We had just recently found out about Astro Dogs when we realized it was just down the road from us! What I love about Astro Dogs is the options, not only are there different types of K dogs, but each one is completely customizable. Once you choose which one you want, you then choose between an all beef hot dog, all mozzarella cheese, or half and half, and they even have a vegetarian sausage option as well. But the customization doesn't stop there! You then get to choose from what sauces to put on top! You have the option of ketchup, mustard, spicy Mayo, Astro Sauce (kind of like a spicy Big Mac sauce is how they described it), Ranch, Nacho Cheese, and more! My family and I tried this truck for the first time the other day and I must say it was a a delicious treat. There are several options and I imagine they are all equally tasty. They have several types of toppings and condiments both ranging in levels of spicy. You can get the center filled with all cheese, sausage, or you can get a 50/50 filling to get a taste of both. If you love mozzarella sticks and or corn dogs stop what you are doing and find this spot! Ordering was super easy and there is a QR that you can use to order directly from your phone to make it even easier. Rather than opting for a traditional corn dog, you can coat corn dog w/ chopped potatoes, Cheetos dust, crushed Takis, etc. One cooked, you can go traditional route (ketchup, mustard) or live on the edge (mildly spicy Astro sauce, nacho cheese, ranch, etc.). You can add a Jarrito or Gansito cake. I opted for the Asteroid, 50-50 rolled in potatoes, then topped rand on top half (mozzarella) and Astro sauce on bottom half (all beef hot dog). The mozzarella was gooey and hot dog was tasty. I opted to eat w/a knife & fork. The Astro sauce had a bit of kick to it, with a residual slow burn. I do not like super spicy, but this was manageable. For me, the corn cheese-dog was a meal by itself! Beware--if you're pressed for time--it may take some time to get your food, especially if they're busy. But, definitely well worth the wait for the corn dog fanatics. I have had the pleasure of having Astro Dogs twice now - once in Bailey Park (Winston-Salem) and once in their usual spot by UNCG for a Yelp event. I am here to tell you - I am a fan! Wow. So what's the scoop? First and foremost, Astro Dogs is FUN! They have a creative and highly-customizable menu! Options like blue Takis, cool ranch Doritos and hot Cheetos add to the presentation and appeal. The menu and the truck are funky and colorful, they even draw little designs with your name on the container. Korean corn dogs have taken the internet by storm recently, and if you're wondering where to get the best K-dog and experience overall, it's here. Most importantly, aside from their instagrammability, these corn dogs are damn good. Compared to others I've tried, nothing else compares as far as the taste. The batter is slightly sweet, perfectly crunchy, and the combinations of hot dog and/or cheese (I recommend both!) is just unmatched. The breading holds up against their delicious sauces (tons of options: spicy mayo, signature Astro sauce, honey mustard, ranch, the list goes on!) and maintains its crunch. Also a perfect breading to filling ratio! So far, the Asteroid dog has been my favorite. Covered in crunchy potato pieces, this one is a knockout, especially with the Astro sauce! I also really liked the Neptune which has a cool ranch Doritos topping, and I added ranch to mine! You really can't go wrong. The staff is always friendly and the atmosphere is modern and vivacious. I think the prices are totally reasonable for the portion size and quality, especially considering this is a food truck. I find a lot of food trucks are pretty darn pricy, but Astros is reasonable enough that you can get 2 dogs and a drink without crossing the $20 threshold. We love to see it! The ordering system is super convenient, they text you once your order is ready so you can wait in your car. The UNCG location is in a parking lot so there's plenty of convenient space to park. We got to try Astro Dogs at the recent Greensboro Korean Festival and I'm so happy we did!! The line was very long (for good reason) and the workers were churning out k-dogs non-stop. I like that they will text you when your order is ready. We got 1-2 of everything on the menu but my favorite is the Mercury (blue takis) and Astroid (potato chunks). Other options included the Sun (hot cheeto topped), Moon, Pluto, Mercury. Really wish I took a picture of the menu which listed the toppings/ingredients but there will be a next time! We got all of the dogs 1/2 cheese 1/2 hot dog and asked them to dress the dogs as they came or as recommended since some of them came with a condiment of choice. I LOVE that ~all~ of the K-dogs were cooked through, with a super crispy and crunchy exterior and soft fluffy interior. Sounds like the bare minimum for k-dogs but you won't believe how many undercooked or overcooked ones I had before (not at Astro dogs!) I opted for the 50/50 with Astro sauce and sweet chili. The first half of the experience is oooey, gooey, goodness . Can I tell you that the cheese pull on this thing is out of this world!!!!! The second half of the experience was the sausage dog. Did I get a slight kick? I think there was a hint of spicy there, but don't quote me. Located in a private ample parking lot, they have some chairs for you to wait or you can wait in your car. Staff is very friendly and even though it's a small menu, it's hard to make up your mind. I ordered a half and half Asteroid for myself because it's rolled in fries and a full sausage Pluto for my daughter. They take down your number so they can text when your order is ready, which I love because I'm hard of hearing and easily distracted. When we picked up our dogs, they asked what sauces we liked and suggested Astro sauce and spicy mayo for the Asteroid. I kept the Pluto plain for the toddler, but it comes with an optional dusting of sugar for that sweet and savory goodness. You can tell from the pictures that these dogs are huge!
