We had a visit from Top Quality in February to adjust our HVAC unit vent to control the airflow…read morebetween the two floors of our home and change the filter, and we talked about setting up a yearly plan to do this every spring and fall (this is routine maintenance we do every year). Everything was and had been working fine at that point. About a couple of months later, the unit stopped cooling, completely. We called them back out and all of a sudden the coolant was 100% empty. We were told that there were "king valves" broken and a leak somewhere, but their tech could not find it. We were given quotes for thousands, up to over $12,000.00, really pressing for a whole system replacement and zone addition. They did offer a repair but that was conditional upon "we might still find something else." No further attempt to try to find the leak they insisted we had, and they charged us $330.00 for nothing at best and sabotage at worst (details below). We decided to get some other opinions, who told us these same things...that there were a couple of the "king valves"/o-rings missing on the outdoor unit (I put king valves in quotes because they said they never hear anyone refer to them that way anymore and it's possibly to confuse clients if they go a-googling, and also that they can be bought by the dozens/hundreds for a few dollars). Additionally, they found all of the seals/gaskets on the outdoor unit were loose, and said that there was a large amount of debris on it that suggested a very large, very fast coolant spray/leak. One of them also said that Top Quality's guy did not even check the coil in the attic because some sort of original seal was still on the cover/door. They all claimed to have the newest, most expensive leak detectors and could not detect any leaks anywhere. They agreed (all of this independently of each other) that if there was a leak, it was so small as to be undetectable and not a problem. I did look back through my old records (I keep everything) and saw that we last had a coolant refill about 7 years ago, and the diagnosis was the same. A possible small leak but not a problem yet. One of the alternate opinion companies this time did a two day and overnight test where he put something in the unit to see if it would leak out. It held 100%. He filled the unit with coolant, fixed the valves and seals, and it has been working just fine again since at a TINY fraction of the cost Top Quality wanted. Now these are not my words but those of the other opinions. That the tech from Top Quality didn't know what he was doing, to run away as fast as possible, and that it even reminded them of situations they had heard of where techs had drained a system of its coolant to re-sell it. It does seem strange that a simple filter change and vent adjustment turned into an empty unit within a couple of months (or sooner, as we had not been using it much yet because it wasn't hot enough, so we wouldn't have known until later), with no leak able to be found by anyone, and a unit working just fine now for several months with just a coolant refill.

The first thing he noticed was my thermostat was not installed properly and he immediately fixed it. He checked out the furnace unit, found the problem, did his "magic", and the BLOWER WORKED! He also changed my filter (which was filthy!) AND ordered me additional filters. All in all, Mike did an OUTSTANDING job. I filed claim with American home warranty and they assigned it to Co-Z Air…read more I had a lot of anxiety over this because of all the horror stories you hear about the warranty companies and what is not covered with AC failures. Our 20 year old R22 compressor finally gave up. The Technician did an excellent job diagnosing it quickly and submitted for a compressor replacement to the warranty company. The warranty company approved it and ordered it right away. It took the compressor several days to come in because the warranty company does the ordering and the whole process took us a week to get it replaced, but there was no delay from Co-Z air. Jeremy received the compressor Tuesday afternoon and they were out the next day to complete the install. $200 for Freon/old compressor disposal and we were back in business. Thanks for doing us right guys and thanks for the diligence. Texas and no AC is no fun!

Toward the end of last summer, our A/C could not keep up with the heat. We knew it was not holding…read moreFreon, as we had Freon added previously, and it was expensive. Certain refrigerants are no longer being produced, and they are very expensive. We wanted to get out from under the 28 year old system, so opted to have a complete new system installed. Brandt Dickey recently installed a new HVAC system in our home. We had a few quotes, and Brandt's was in the middle. Brandt also came highly recommended by my bother-in-law, and has been doing work for him for a very long time. So we went with Dickey's A/C. As the system is barely a week old, and I have not had to use the A/C yet, I am only going to comment on the installation. As the summer approaches, and temperatures rise, I will likely update this review (when the system is put to the real test as temperatures rise). I may also update when the temperatures drop again, as this is a heat-pump system, so primary cooling will done by reversing the system. I never really quite understood heat-pump technology, but now that I have a better understanding, it's pretty neat. The removal of the old system and the install of the new went fairly smoothly. However, when it came to start the system up, there were two problems. It was late, so Brandt needed to come back the next day. Both problems were fully resolved the following day, but it did require me to be home again. Problem 1: The system not switching into heat-pump mode. This turned out to be a mis-inserted wire on the thermostat. Easy fix. Oh, on the subject of the thermostat, a new one, and wiring, was required. Heat-pump systems require more control wires, and the old wiring did not have enough wires. This meant a new wire was run from outdoor unit to indoor unit, and from indoor unit to (new) thermostat. Problem 2: The system was not holding pressure, and this turned out to be a bad weld in a hard to see place. Also easily fixed, once the leak was located. The system was now 100% functional. Yay! Brandt did a good job of cleaning up and hauling the old stuff away. Sure, the recyclers would have gladly picked (some of) this stuff up, but it was nice not to deal with (any) it. So all and all, a pretty good experience. I can't wait to see how the new system works, in both the summer and winter. I'm happy that my wife thought of getting this done now, in the cooler temps, as waiting until summer might have meant higher prices and longer waits. Oh, and I think this new system may result in a tax break, as it meets some energy efficiency guidelines. So hopefully less tax next year, and smaller electricity bills throughout the year. Bottom line: It's going to be cool to be cool! PS. The system is a Goodman. The main reason for selecting this system was size. We have some tricky spaces to deal with, and Goodman fit the spaces the best. I was skeptical of the brand, but Brandt said they have gotten a lot better over the years. Even so, I may opt for the extended warranty, at least on the more expensive outdoor unit (compressor).

I called several places who only wanted to sell me a new unit at a very high price. Tim, the owner of American Home Heating and AC, stopped by our home and checked out the system. He explained all of our options from least expensive to most expensive. No other company did this for us. We chose to go the least expensive route, replacing the low R22 freon with the new R422d freon. We will use American Home Heating and AC when this unit needs to be replaced.
