We had two small home projects that we wanted to accomplish this summer: install recessed lighting in our living room and replace our half bathroom flooring from wood to tile due to water damage. A quick search on Yelp for handyman services led us to Mardik. He came for a free on-site consultation and gave us different quotes for different labor costs. His quotes were reasonable and comparable to other handyman companies. Mardik was also very patient with us during the consultation by answering all our questions and giving suggestions about the materials and work that was needed. After we decided to utilize his services, he was always quick to respond to our texts and call us to help us with finding the exact materials we needed for our projects. When it came to working on the projects, Mardik was always on time and worked very efficiently. We were told by other handyman companies that the projects would take 4-5 days but Mardik got it done in three (the lights were done in 2 days, the bathroom done in 3)! Even though he could complete all the work on his own, Mardik chose to use subcontractors for certain parts of our project, like installing the tile in the bathroom, because he knew getting the best people to do it would give the best results. In the end, my husband and I were extremely satisfied with our new dimmable recessed lighting and our new bathroom flooring. I also have to give Mardik extra brownie points for being honest with his work. Our bathroom door is a sliding door that was kept open and never closed throughout the entire time the bathroom project was being worked on. After Mardik was done, he tried to close the bathroom door and realized it was getting stuck and not opening and closing smoothly. After inspecting, he initially said it was a problem with the wheels on the door and explained how we could fix it on our own if we wanted to give it a try or he could do it for us on a different day. However, the following morning, Mardik texted me and told me he was coming over later to check on the door. It turns out the door was getting stuck due to the way the bathroom baseboard was reinstalled after the flooring was done. Mardik fixed the problem and our bathroom door is now opening and closing smoothly again! As first-time homeowners and not being handy ourselves, we would've simply gone with Mardik's initial assessment of the door wheels needing to be replaced. Instead, Mardik took it upon himself to realize and acknowledge that the problem was the result of the project and came on his own to fix it. I've heard plenty of horror stories from friends and family about contractors not being honest and/or taking responsibility for any errors that occurred in their work. But Mardik is definitely not one of them! I highly recommend Mardik for any of your handyman services! I came home from vacation to a leaky outdoor pipe. I called a few handyman companies and Kevin's had the quickest response. Mardik showed up at my house 90 minutes later, professional, very polite, explained the work he would do and how long it would take. Mardik has done a number of jobs for us already and for every project he accomplishes - we are happy. First project we asked him to do was for recessed lighting installation. After he finished the lighting I observed that he is also meticulous in his work which is difficult to find nowadays. I've encountered several contractors before who would just do the job (take shortcuts) but do not pay attention to the details which is why we have peace of mind when Mardik was working on our repairs and projects. After that we asked him to do more repairs - to our wall, rerouting our dryer duct/vent, and finally a major project - a built in cabinet/shelving around the fireplace, and also installing a window (both in our family room) which I am posting a photo of here. Actually another contractor who priced slight less began to do the work but it was such a disaster and headache...so we asked Mardik if he can fix and continue the job which he gladly did. I was impressed with his problem solving skills (the other contractor messed up tiling and did not use the level tool) but Mardik was able to fix them and the overall project came out really, really nice. I would highly recommend Mardik - he is professional - he starts early and works all day, he makes sure he leaves the place clean. His price is reasonable too. He also has a team that has their own specialty - painting, cabinetry, and so on. They are all skilled and also very polite, and respectful to us and our space. Probably it was my mistake to hire him for a bathroom remodel project. Initially I called him for some bath repair work, but he convinced me to do a full remodel. During the initial consultation he appeared knowledgeable and familiar with remodel work. But soon after the work started, it was clear he is taking short cuts or don't know the work. The bathtub installation is not level and tilted in both directions. Along the length, there is a difference about 0.70 inches, making it impossible to install the tub door. The bath drain assembly installation so much deflected from the normal position it should be, the drain valve is not flush with the tub. As a result , there is a gap of 0.1 inch between tub body and the drain valve on one side which he filled with thick layer of putty. It is a matter of time, it will start leaking. The shower value (dual control for temperature and flow) is installed wrongly, with hot and cold sides reversed. To compensate for it, he placed temperature control knob downwards, where it should be facing upwards and move along with the main handle. Though it was pointed out to him about the wrong installation he refused to fix it. The vanity installation is pathetic. It came fully assembled, but the manufacturer claims it is due to the installation issue on the back panel, which he removed for cutting the openings. The towel bar installation was noticeably tilted to one side. Apart from these quality issues, he played trick with the quote. Unlike the other quotes I received, which had full itemized work listings on their letter pad, this guy quoted with a text message with some brief description of the work. After the work started only he told the bathtub door installation is not included in the work, although the original bathroom had the tub door installed. And due to the above mentioned not level tub installation, now it is impossible to install the door as per the manufactures guidelines. In short, I wasted about 15K of money in this remodel work. Most of the work needs to be redone with a qualified professional. read more

Found Mardik here on Yelp about 6 months ago, and have since hired him for a total of 3 different jobs. I would absolutely use him again for any future work we have. Some of the work he did on our place: 1. Finished garage: involved updating electrical, adding insulation, adding framing to support drywall on ceiling, hanging/texturing drywall, moved garage entry door and filled old location. 2. Installed additional kitchen/pantry cabinets - Also did framing/drywall work here to extend a wall by 18" 3. Added casing to windows, installed closet doors (again, framing work needed to have them fit correctly) He's very to the point, friendly, and works around surprises in schedules. We had to ask him to wait on a job he already started with us as we were finishing another project that was overlapping with his work, which he was able to accommodate and just gave us a window for when he'd be free again. He is often booked up, so have the details of what you need worked out, and have the materials ready, he works very quickly. "I'll be there at 8am tomorrow." How many times have I heard that from any number of contractors only to have to chase them down hours after their committed time...With Mardik he would text me at 8am on the dot to let me know he was outside. Little issues that would pop up, he would take care of, not saying things like "that's not included or it was like that before I got here, etc..." One example is our garage opener, it's fairly new, less than 1 year old, after he was working on the garage project it didn't function anymore (it would just click instead of winding up the door) Mardik took the time to figure out what the probelm was and fixed it. Fortunately/unfortunately, we've experienced working with many different contractors through the years, the good ones (and the bad ones) really stand out. The house I'm renting needed a sunroof installed. After some very unreliable contractors, Mardik was sent to do this installation. He was on-time and very friendly. The final installation looked very good and served its intended purpose. Months later, California finally experienced some much-needed rain. Unfortunately, this caused the sunroof to leak water into the house. I called up Mardik, and he came over on the same day to fix it.
