UGHHH I used to love this place. But after 2 years, it may be time to finally find a new nail salon. The last two times I visited there were only 3 people working, as opposed to their usual 6 or 7. Apparently there have been some issues and some people are no longer working there for various reasons. Several guests (while still in the salon) were complaining about their nails. By the time I left, after more than 2 hours, I gotta say, I was too. It was the worst gel polish I've gotten there so far. So I went in for a gel overlay and pedicure I was told my nails weren't long enough. He proceeds to do acrylic full set. Without cutting any cuticles or anything. Then another girl does my pedi. I asked about the cuticles that were hanging. And she says it to him he tells me wait till my nails dry he will fix. He doesn't fix really then tells me my total they charge for shaping if nails even though that should be given. I'm not sure why he acted in that way money wasn't an issue just to look nice is though. AND i'm just finding out that my primary nail tech is no longer there. They are under new ownership and i suppose new management. The new owner, older woman, does not do solid work at all. Went to University of Maryland and always got my nails done here! Way better than the place around the corner, Revo. As a recent UMD graduate, I still come back when I can. Haven't found a place I like quite as much. Not sure if they're biased towards me because I'm a regular, or because I'm Vietnamese (lol), but I always get taken fairly quickly and get handled with great care. My two favorites are the two bests: Lina (with all the tattoos) and Linh (skinny louder one), who both sit right by each other in the front. You can't go wrong with these two. They also speak great English too, so it is pretty easy to get across what it is that you want exactly. As for me, I always get a full set that comes with very specific instructions: THIN (ugh can't stand thick fake nails - so corny), NARROW/SKINNY (your full set should not be fatter than your regular nail - gross), and SQUARE (sry just not a fan of claws). They both give me exactly what I want. I receive so many compliments on my nails and people always ask me where I get them done and what color. If only I got a nickel everytime someone asked for my color while I was still getting my nails painted (lol, ladies don't tell me you don't feel a sense of ownership haha). They also always have the new OPI collection in house. Just ask one of them to point out which are the newer ones. Most of their colors are either OPI or Essie. I also get my eyebrows waxed here. Nothing too spectacular, but when they're not busy, they do tweeze your eyebrows for a little extra. I always ask them to cut mine down. Recently got a gel pedicure and I love it! I am furious with this salon. Having said that, they did a good job on my sister's gel manicure, so it may have only been my manicurist who was incompetent. That doesn't change my one star ranking for the salon because of a few terribly icky things that I noticed. The most important thing you need to glean from this review is to avoid the overweight older woman with the almost nonexistent fingernails. The tattooed chick and the other young tall manicurist seem to know what they're doing. Now let's begin... I needed a soak off from my previous manicure (at my regular salon in NY), and the first thing that struck me as being off was the electric sander they took to my nails before wrapping them in foil and acetone. I've never had a manicurist do this before, and it made me nervous, but I know different salons do things differently, so I kept quiet about it. My salon usually just soaks the nails and then pushes the polish off with a metal cuticle pusher. In a few minutes my manicurist came over to start removing the polish. My sister's manicure commenced at the same time. Then the woman spent 45 minutes soaking and re-soaking my individual fingers, breaking my nails, and ultimately taking off layers of my nail with the sander drill. The whole time she complained about my previous (excellent) manicure like it was my fault. I don't know what the problem was, I've never had an issue with removal before. I suspect the acetone they use is at fault. At the end of this process my nails are mangled, thin and uneven, and my fingertips are horribly dried out from the acetone. My sister's manicure is finished and dry. The woman jumps right into it, unevenly filing and buffing my nails further. Then she overcompensates for the current brittle nature of my nails with heavy double layers of UV primer. It's worthwhile to note here that every time she got polish on my skin, she "cleaned it up" with a paintbrush. Which just resulted in a smoothed out layer of dried polish on my skin later. Another important thing to note: there is no display of what the finished gel colors will look like, which can be difficult to see. I wanted a nice taupe color, and the shade I picked looked correct until it went on my nail. I immediately told the manicurist it wasn't right, and she basically was just like "let's see if it looks darker after a few shades." I specifically told her I was going for a greyish brown. She walked over to the rack of polish and brought back a clear shade. Useless. She chastised me at this point "You have to open the bottle to see what the color looks like before you pick it." I know that. I did that. The color looks brown. I shouldn't need to paint it on my skin to test it. You should have a display. She continues painting my nails the wrong color. I sit in silent indignation. The UV lights they use are greasy little portable boxes that I shared with two other patrons while I was there. This box was not cleaned in between uses. Nor were the nail tools. Let me say that again. THEY DID NOT CLEAN THE NAIL TOOLS BETWEEN USING THEM ON ME AND ANOTHER CUSTOMER. I should have walked out, I should have made her take off the wrong color and fix it, but I was so done with dealing with her. I'd been there almost two hours. She ended up doing a third coat, but it just looked clear. My nails were not filed evenly, they were different lengths and they were severely damaged. She tried to send me away with wet nails even after I pointed out that they were wet. I stayed til they were dry, paid her, tipped her (God knows why), I went back to my sister's apartment, and I did damage control. Now I'm frightened of going to my salon to get this horrible manicure taken off. My whole damaged nail may come off with the polish. Here's a little summary. This place is more expensive than my New York City salon, you don't get a massage, you feel rushed the whole time, and they leave your nails worse than when you come in. read more

I usually have a good experience with Kevin Nails, but today was not great. The lady who did my gel manicure was an older woman but I am not sure her name. She got polish in multiple spots around my fingers which I had to peel off after. She also used old tools instead of ones from an unopened bag which I found gross. My fingers were bleeding a little after she started working on them. The gel manicure turned out to be nothing special, and then she did not even give me a hand massage with lotion afterwards. This review is for the eyebrow waxing service. I came here because it's close to campus and my roommate referred me. There was a bit of a wait even though I went on a random weekday afternoon...about 10-15 minutes. They take you to a back room where they go ahead with the waxing. The attendant is very patient and takes care with what she's doing and goes back with tweezers to make sure the shape is done and that there are no stray hairs. The whole process took about 15-20 minutes. Good value at $8. Minus one star because they sometimes give you judgmental looks if you haven't shaped your eyebrows in a while...geez I'm a college student, cut me some slack. Also, she burned my roommates eyelid the other day and now there is a visible scar...yikes. read more

Not a fan. They have lots of regulars and an endless stream of clients from UMD, so as a walk-in, you're not treated very well. I tried to get a pedicure with a friend and they basically told me they couldn't estimate wait times. They kept bypassing us for other customers because we wanted to get pedicures together so we could talk. They're not very friendly. The actual pedicure is hit-or-miss when you do get it. Came to a total of $46 and I had her reshape my nails. The acrylics were applied at a nearby salon and though I loved the color, I was not a fan of the shape or service. I usually get an eyebrow wax, mani and pedi. They have a great selection of nail polishes and have Gel manicures available for $30. The prices are very affordable, $28 for a mani and pedi and $8 for a eyebrow wax. They recently got new equipment and in my opinion the salon is always clean and put together. I would advise you to come in early during the week (they open 10 AM and 11 AM on Sunday). I have been here several times and each time, I've found myself having to wait for extraordinarily long periods of time when there are technicians just standing around doing nothing (and each time, one of them has eventually been the one to serve me, so it's not like I am waiting because the person who I need is busy). They have decent service expect for two things: 1. They cannot take of gels properly (even though they offer them there). I have never had an issue with any other salon taking off gels except for Kevin Nails. The girl left the residue on my fingers and when I asked if she could continue taking it off, she said nothing was there and rang me up. I had to wait and grow out my nails for all of it to come off, I would have had better luck trying to peel them off myself. 2. While their eyebrow wax is gentler than other salons, it leaves a lot of hairs behind and they do not do a good job removing the remaining hairs (this is not just one technician, I have had at least three different people do my eyebrows there). One time, the woman even told me that she couldn't pluck the hairs because they were ingrown. When I checked in the car, they were at least 1/4 in (enough to wax, let alone pluck) and I got them out myself at home in about 30 seconds. I know I just did it myself, but the point is that for $8, they should also be plucking stray hairs they miss while waxing. If you want okay quality service, and don't mind paying prices that are inflated because it's a college town, I'd recommend Kevin Nails. Just be aware that there are other, better, salons in the area for the same prices. read more

I've always heard good things about Kevin Nails, but I didn't start coming here until the staff from Oh Nails began working here. The location is a bit better, with metered parking right up front. The interior is sparse; three artwork is minimal and the furniture of functional above all else. The massage chairs for pedicures are a bit confusing to operate but are nice once you figure it out. The service is satisfactory. I've had no problems regarding my nails in the several visits I've had and the ladies I've worked with were always pleasant. My only complaint has been with my eyebrows. They tend to make them very thin. I'm trying to grow mine out, so I have to be EXTREMELY specific when I tell them to shape them, not wax them completely off. read more

I have been coming here for awhile because it's very convenient for me. I sat through loud talks and nasty ways by the older woman who works there but I have had it for the last time. I do like a couple girls who work there..a tatooed girl who is always on point and the quiet, thin, young girl with a long hair who sits by the front counter. However, the older woman is nasty. My favorite is Jenny - she is so friendly and her gel manicure, especially gel French manicure, is impeccable and really just perfect. I honestly don't think it's them, it's me. I just need to break up with nail salons outside of the inner city because we do not get along. I never am happy with my eyebrows or the price when I leave these salons and I'm going to go ahead and stop putting the blame on them. In DC I can get a fill in for around 20$. Gel fill in. I just don't see why I need to pay almost double and then be nickle and dimed for things like a cut down. The lady who did my nails wasn't conversational at all and borderline rude. I don't usually complain, and I have not made a review on Yelp before, but I could not resist venting my DISGUST with this last trip to the nail salon. Its been more than a few weeks but I am just now getting to this. Over all the salon is fine. Nothing fancy, not really dirty, just a little messy. The work that the shop does is pretty decent and on par with the prices they charge. You will not get world class work at college town prices, but it is fine. The younger looking tech did a wonderful job with my friend. And another girl with tattoos was pleasant.. But............... the boss, manager, or more likely, the owner , is a very evil woman. She was constantly cursing at someone one the phone and was just plain mean and rude to everyone in general. This is not the first time I have seen her this way. And my GF told me she is always like this. I don't know why she continues to go here. I go to the salon for my nails AND to relax with the entire experience. I went in to get a full set of acrylic nails. When I was there the owner was taking SHOTS of some brown liquor and was completely belligerent-attempting to talk to me and slurring his words. Not only did this happen but the woman doing my set completely ripped up my cuticles leaving my fingers bleeding. The acrylics were slanted and I repeatedly asked her to make them more even- which she attempted to do my filing them down to a nub.
