I cannot express enough gratitude to Dr. Knopf for the exceptional care I received during my treatment for Stage 4a Ovarian Cancer. From the very first meeting, I felt reassured due to his decades of practice in the oncology field. Dr. Knopf exudes compassion, warmth, and positivity. He has an unwavering commitment to his patients. He makes himself available to his patients 24/7 via text and phone calls. He helped me manage a multitude of chemotherapy side effects. Every single round of chemo we would discuss the side effects and how best to manage them. Dr. Knopf swiftly changed chemo drugs, when he could see the risks were outweighing the benefits. He is very knowledgeable about all the different types of drugs on the market and their known side effects. Presently, he diligently monitors my blood cell counts, blood pressure, and heart rate, at the required intervals for the first line maintenance therapy, to ensure I am safe and do not experience any serious adverse events. This is a hard review to write because there aren't enough words to express how grateful I am to Dr. Knopf for his excellent care. He helped me through what was the hardest time of my entire life. He is angel and I will forever be grateful to him. Cancer is terrible and he walks through the darkness with you. This is so very important. Dr. Knopf is arrogant, greedy and unethical. I had surgery (3) at Kaiser but only two of them were necessary. For the first surgery they removed the wrong part of my breast. I gave a summary of this to both a lawyer and Dr. Knopf. Dr. Knopf responded he wanted to help me. In order to review my medical records, he charged me 2k. Then decided I did not have a case although he also claimed he did not change his opinion. Hmm, I guess what he meant by saying he wanted to help me was to help himself to my money. He defended himself saying he had years of training, blah, blah, blah and told me, as if I didn't know, I was welcome to still move ahead with arbitration, as if I didn't know that. I paid him the two thousand dollars based on the summary of the report I gave him and his claim he wanted to help. How long did he spend reviewing my medical files? Somehow I doubt it was 10 hours (that would be at $200/hour). I wonder how many others he has done this to. read more

Worst experience with a Doctor in SF. Background - Referred to Dr. Knopf through my primary care physician as my recent blood work showed high iron levels and potential hemochromatosis - Took 4 weeks to get an appointment because the office never called me to schedule an appointment after receiving my referral - 1st visit - Dr. Knopf DID NOT REVIEW ANY OF MY MEDICAL HISTORY, spent all of 2 minutes with me and immediately had me retake blood tests that I had already taken 2 months prior, which I showed him the results of - fine, I get it, maybe he wanted a refresh *Advice for blood tests - DO NOT us the Sutter Health lab at 3838 California. They charged me $270 for 2 common blood tests that cost $30 at Labcrop. Go somewhere else unless you are positive that your insurance will cover the full cost. - 2nd visit - This visit lasted 3 minutes. Dr. Knopf told me that nothing was wrong and that I should be fine. I reiterated the results of my recent blood work (from 2013 and 2016) showing elevated iron levels and reminded him that I donated blood in the last month, which may have impacted the additional blood tests he ordered. He then looked again at my blood work history and changed his mind, saying that maybe I was actually at risk for hemochromatosis. He then told me to take ANOTHER blood test in 6 weeks and come back. I basically self diagnosed myself as Dr. Knopf did not review my medical history and did not bother listening to me or allowing me to say anything as he rushed me out the door on both visits. Best of all, I just received a bill for the first visit (2 minutes) for $330 and the second visit (3 minutes) for $140 = Total of $470 for 5 minutes of Dr. Knopf's time and a self diagnosis. Did I also mention the blood work came out to $270 for a grand total of... $740??? Some people might have this kind of money to throw around, but I'm not one of them. I feel sick to my stomach knowing there is nothing I can do about this, but pay, even though I received absolutely no advice, analysis, or value from my visits with Dr. Knopf. What a joke. There are SO many doctors in the SF area, please look elsewhere read more

With a complex medical condition, it's hard for me to find someone that can take all of it & me in, including the emotional states that often accompany the destabilization of illness. Dr. Knopf doesn't try to fob off a diagnosis if he has questions -he will research and make a referral as needed. That is rare actually. So many doctors need to come off as if they know it all, even if that means giving you a medicine or treatment that will not work. I find the office so friendly and supportive. I've been in many where the staff operate out of fear, here they are human, kind and gentle, clearly because they like what they are doing, empathetic & supporting their patients to get the care they need. Dr Knopf took my insurance even though it's not a ritzy one, and most doctors of his caliber won't even bother because of the massive horrible paperwork, but he clearly is not motivated by money. It is refreshing to go to an office and see a diversity of patients and we are all treated equally. Perhaps some people don't dig this, they are accustomed to a doctor's office / salon where they serve biscuits and drinks. There are real people here and they clearly connect to the staff. They share their lives with the staff as they sign in, they laugh and joke, and their suffering is relieved in those moments, you can feel it. With Dr Knopf, patients start to tell him their stories in the halls, because they know he is a doctor who cares. So it, this means I have to wait a little longer, that is OK with me. I'd rather have a doctor / human then a doctor / machine. The times I had to go to be admitted to the hospital, the office knew, and reached out to check how I doing. When I was recently in the ER, I got a response back right away. Dr Knopf reads my labs and reflects on them, but treats the whole -not focusing in on what his specialty is - which again, is rare. He has been correct when he advises to wait - as he reflected on the pattern of my bloodwork, and spared me expensive treatments that were not necessary. I know it is easier to be motivated by anger to write a review, but those of us who are happy often take this for granted, but as medical services becomes more incommensurate with need, as inequality increases and it becomes more difficult to get good treatment, I know I cannot take my wonderful medical care for granted. I have seen staff here go out of their way to help elderly patients on their way out, talking to them about their grandchildren - so if I have to wait longer for this human connection and level of true care - I am grateful to do so. read more

I cannot say better things about any hemotologist/oncolgist, either in San Francisco, or at the known medical school research centers on the East Coast. I have been seen at them, and have relatives who have taught there. More specifically, I have a serious and unusual blood disorder. Dr. Knopf was absolutely on top of the cutting research on this arcane disease, and can get into clinical trials of experimental drugs. He managed every aspect of my condition with empathy and an unusual, and creative, intellect. I am a highly educated patient, from a known medical family. My standards are exacting in terms of standards of care. Dr. Knopf has met every expectation. Unfortunately, a daughter also has a hematlogy issue. She too is a well educated and discerning consumer of medical treatment. She would concur with my assessment of the standard of care I that we have each received. read more

I met doctor Kevin Knopf more than 3 years ago while helping two of my friends: one was diagnosed with bone cancer and another - with blood problem. Given the fact that I've been working as an interpreter for elders at the doctor offices, at the hospitals, at emergency rooms for about 13 years I can affirm with full responsibility that the doctor deserves 5 stars, and more. His excellent service combines the highest professional skills and the greatest personality. Unfortunately such combination doesn't occur that often. Dr. Knopf has been my oncologist for 10 years- recently he recommended another doctor for me who is closer to where I live to help make my life easier during Chemo treatments. He is still available to help me when needed. I have had breast cancer off and on for 28 years-it's been metastatic for 18 years. Dr. Knopf was highly recommended by my trusted Radiologist years ago. I have always had a great rapport and relationship with Dr. Knopf. My insurance wasn't always available so he would see me anyway and help me out in any way he could. I appreciated his openness and his ability to think outside the box. I also appreciated his great knowledge, his concern, and his empathy; which were always there for me. read more

I was a referral patient, my Dr. sent over all my recent labs and tests and relevant details. My appointment was at 3:30, I showed up at 3:15 to make sure I filled out the necessary paperwork etc. Its not until 4pm that they call me back, put me in a room and took my vitals. The nurse apologized and said she didn't think the wait would be much longer. I sat there another 30 minutes before the doctor showed up. He had not reviewed my labs or chart. Dr. Knopf asked me to pull up my recent blood test results on my phone so he could scroll through them. I attempted to give him a history of what I've been going through. He seems uninterested, rushes me, says the office typically doesn't do any procedures after 330 or 4ish. Says, I should come back next week for more labs (why, I just had a full panel done less than a week ago!!!) Said he could chat with me briefly before then. Then he got up and left the room, and just left me there. Never looked at my medications, never asked about them. He spent the last part of my talking to him on his pager/phone. Highly disrespectful. Great emotional stress suffered after MD most likely had another patient's chart in front of him while conducting my routine office visit. You can imagine the horrible possibilities communicated in this confusion to a recovering cancer patient. His office notes reflect, "I may have misspoken" during the visit in question. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out he made a BIG MISTAKE. When a practice is this busy, errors are more likely to occur. Proceed with caution. read more
