Dr Wang is a really excellent doctor. I have seen him for over 5 years and have always been really satisfied with the care I receive. He is warm and always on top of what is happening in his field. I trust him and am really glad he is my doc. Also, the office staff is very nice. read more

Looking at some of those 1 and 2 star reviews I don't recognize the Dr I've been seeing for 15+ years. Condescending? Control freak? Withholds prescriptions? Not in my experience. He is an outstanding wellness partner. He is funny, warm, inquisitive, deeply knowledgeable, and patient. I ask lots of questions. He treats my questions seriously and, a few times, has said he'll need to do a little research. He has always gotten back to me with the add'l info. While he's efficient in getting through appointments, he always takes the time for a quick chat. When I've had concerns about the cost of a test or treatment, he helps me navigate the options and choose the one that is right for me--which I deeply appreciate. A condescending control freak with "I am a doctor, and you are an idiot" attitude and "my way or highway" approach. Just save yourself the trouble and find a doctor who cares about you or at least listens to you. Specifically, the first time I met Mr. Wang was in May 2017 when my regular physician moved to another clinic, and I was looking for a new doctor to see for my annual physical. I transferred my health records to Mr. Wang and scheduled my appointment by phone. When I came to see him, the first thing he said, "Actually, I don't accept new patients and am not sure why they scheduled this appointment with me." This was a cold welcome and an insensitive way to start a relationship with a new patient. My visit was very brief. However, I didn't care as it was more important for me to have my blood tests ordered to confirm that everything was all right. A few months later, I found an excellent physician at the same clinic (Dr. Dennis Townsend, if you want to know who I highly recommend) and received excellent care from this doctor. Unfortunately, early in 2020, my doctor moved to a different practice, and yet again, I was forced to find a new physician. Mr. Wang was the only available, and I gave him benefits of doubt as all we are human beings and, perhaps, he just had a bad day when I saw him the first time in 2017, I thought. I transferred to Mr. Wang and scheduled an appointment with him in June 2020. To have a productive visit, I wanted to order standard blood tests and x-ray for my old injury that was bothering me recently so I could discuss the results with Mr. Wang. However, the nurse I spoke with told me that Mr. Wang didn't want to order tests (the same standard tests I had done every year for the last 7-8 years and the same x-ray I had a couple of years ago), and he wanted to see me first. I explained to the nurse my rationale and that I would prefer my tests to be done before the visit so I could have a productive conversation with Mr. Wang. The nurse agreed to ask him again but called me the next day and said that Mr. Wang refused to order tests before seeing me. Oh, well. I started having a bad feeling about that already. When I saw Mr. Wang, it was the second and the last time I saw this individual as I don't have any plans whatsoever to meet him ever again. After entering the room and exchanging regular pleasantries, Mr. Wang immediately jumped onto business. He told point straight that he has a specific way of working with patients, and if his approach doesn't work for me, I would be better off by finding another doctor. It was a deja vu and flashback into 2017! We talked about the standard blood tests I usually get done as some of them he didn't want to order. It took some persuasion on my part to convince him to order at least one of the tests that was very important for me to monitor, as all my previous physicians indicated. Mr. Wang didn't want to order an x-ray and referred me to a specialist (who later ordered this test as it was necessary for him to see what was going on). After finishing a round of negotiations about tests, we finally started my annual physical exam. Mr. Wang cheeked my throat, ears, and thyroids. And ... that's it. Yep, this was my annual. I started sharing with him some of the issues I wanted to discuss, and for each of them, he suggested that either I am too young or my concerns are nothing. He didn't listen and ask me any follow up questions to dig deeper into my concerns. I had more items on my list of health issues to discuss with him, but he was visibly rushing the conversation and was wrapping everything up. So I gave up as I felt lucky that at least I would have some of my regular blood work done and would see a specialist who hopefully would be more competent. In sum, Mr. Wang has some control issues and has a dismissive attitude towards patients. I realized that my first impression was correct, and it was silly of me to see Mr. Wang again and expect a different outcome. As many other reviewers alluded, he is not well attuned with the needs of his patients and perhaps is still perfecting his soft skills; let's put it this way. P.S. Mr. Wang reminds me of Dr. Zoidberg from Futurama (an adult sci-fi humorous cartoon) who, as an alien, knew nothing about human anatomy but was acting with utter confidence and dismissal of patient concerns mostly at the detriment of their health. read more

Its unfortunate that I cannot give less than a star rating because Dr. Wang deserves -5 stars and Sutter East Bay "Patient Relations" deserves -10 stars. I had wanted to see a doctor for exertional shortness of breath since I had recently been sick with a cold and I have had a tendency to get pneumonias. I also had wanted to see a doctor about chronic left shoulder pain not caused by an acute injury. My regular doctor was out of town and couldn't see me until the middle of July and being concerned, I wanted to see someone sooner. And the scheduling person advised that Dr. Wang had an opening the same day for a video visit. Dr. Wang's medical assistant called me prior to the visit and I was very clear with her that I ONLY had exertional shortness of breath but I had a tendency to get pneumonias and I wanted a chest x-ray to make sure I did not have a pneumonia. I was very clear that my left shoulder pain was chronic in nature and not caused by an acute injury. I answered every screening question clearly and honestly. She said that that doctor would be fine to do a video visit given my complaints and concerns. First, Dr. Wang was over 1/2 an hour late for the video visit, which is unprofessional, but things happen. He then proceeded to refuse to offer me any substantive help or assistance. I've had more helpful Google searches. For every question I asked, for every concern I had, his response was "well, I can't evaluate that over video, I'd have to do an in person exam" "I can't really do that, because I haven't examined you in person" and "I don't feel comfortable ordering a chest x-ray when I haven't examined you in person" Had I walked in off the street, I would totally understand. But he agreed to see me via video visit knowing FULL WELL the nature of my complaints and concerns. Before the video visit, he knew, or should have known what my complaints were and he had all the information available to him that I had given the medical assistant who pre-screened me. If he was unable to offer any substantive medical advice or assistance with my complaints unless he saw me in person WHY DID HE AGREE TO A VIDEO VISIT????? I agree with other posters that video visits are simply an easy and desperate money grab for these sorts of doctors. Knowing he couldn't help me or offer any medical assistance, but taking the appointment anyway so he could get money off my insurance provider toes the line of medical ethics and just human ethics. I also agree that there is very likely a racial component to the quality of care patients receive. He was rude, condescending, patronizing and dismissive - and I wonder if he is the same way with people who look a certain way. Studies bear out how detrimental this dismissive and unhelpful attitude can be for minority patients. I called Sutter after the visit and said that given the nature of the visit, I did not feel that my insurance company should be billed for this bogus visit. Let me just say that their Patient Relations are garbage and trash as well. Do not be fooled by the fact that they respond to some complaints on Yelp! with a phone number to call. They do not EVER pick up that line, its an answering machine. Don't waste your time and please don't think these are good stewards of good patient care because they give a sympathetic canned response with a bogus phone number. I filed a complaint with Sutter (I had to file it with the billing department because no one in "patient relations" knows how to pick up a phone). I was very clear that my insurance company should not be charged with this visit. Apparently, I should give their "patient relations" up to 30 days to call back. but apparently they immediately sent the bill to my insurance company for payment. And this should tell you all you need to know about Dr. Grant Wang and whoever he works with - greed and laziness over care and concern for the actual patient. You've been warned. read more

Dr. Wang was my doctor for about 10 years. My experience was less than stellar. 1. What other reviewers say is true - he withholds prescriptions unless you do a visit. I have asthma and have a prescription inhaler. He wouldn't renew it unless I met him every year. When I met him he'd say "asthma still bothering you?" I'd say "yes". Then he'd renew it. So a meeting was hardly necessary. Also, when you are having trouble breathing it's nice to just get the damn medicine 2. He can be condescending and is not constructive. While the message he was delivering was true, how he delivered it was not very professional and not particularly helpful. A primary care physician should be a partner who helps you lead a healthier lifestyle. This is not him. He does know what he's taking about (hence the second star), but I want more from a primary. I have been with Sutter for several years and with Dr Wang for 1.5 years. Not any more. I will change networks if I have to but I will find another PCP who is empathetic, honest, and listens to/cares for his patients. Above all, I want a doctor who treats people of color and minorities with dignity and respect. Dr Wang displays several negative qualities that have already been cited by previous reviewers. CONDESCENDING: In his communications with me , Dr Wang, always presumed to know everything and ignored feedback. Once I told him how my previous PCP approached issues, he simply did not acknowledge the feedback. He made an inappropriate statement and pushed to gain compliance with what he wanted me to do. I just sat there in shock and he just droned on without noticing what impact his words / statements were having on me. This was quite infuriating and I could not understand why he was treating me this way. The only logical explanation I could find is that I am a person of color. During a previous visit, I heard him speak with someone on his staff (a woman of color) in an extremely rude manner. It became clear to me that if he was allowed speak with his co-workers with such disrespect, I probably shouldn't expect better treatment. LACKS EMPATHY / DOES NOT CARE ABOUT HIS PATIENTS: There were multiple occasions where I felt Dr Wang approached me not as a human but as someone that need to be managed to comply with his wishes or extract revenue. On one occasion, I was in acute pain due to an injury and sought his advice to see a specialist. He referred me to a specialist who could not see me for several weeks. When I asked him to refer me to someone who could see me sooner because I was in pain, he told me to go to a facility where this specialist currently practices. The only problem was that this facility was too far away (and not convenient for me to go to) . What's more important for my care; that I see a specialist he insists on or that I see someone who can help me manage my condition sooner? LACKS ATTENTION TO DETAIL: It is unclear whether Dr Wang has too many patients OR he lacks attention to detail. Either way, he did not familiarize himself with the details of my case enough to know what care he should provide. In one appointment, he told me that I had a condition and spoke for a good 20 minutes about what tests I should do / specialists I should see. When I intervened to ask him if he was diagnosing me with that condition, he seemed confused but kept speaking. Finally, when I told him that I had not been previously diagnosed with that condition and he probably has me mixed up with someone else, he seemed upset. He checked on the computer and was red faced about the error but did not apologize. What are you here for, he asked me before we could talk about why I was there. When it came time for the bill, I was charged ~$500 for the visit. Typically my visits run $250-300. Needless to say not only did he make a mistake but he also expected me to foot the bill for it. Just goes to show whether he will take responsibility if he makes a mistake; a quality you want in your health care provider. Being Dr Wang's patient was an experience in enduring insulting behavior, suppression of my humanity, and tolerating absolute apathy for my health / well being. The times when doctors can play God are gone. Dr. Wang needs to catch on and change his approach to his patients. Sutter Health also needs to take notice and take corrective action before someone decides to sue them for discrimination and malpractice. read more

Do not go to Dr. Grant Wang. He is condescending, focused on revenue, and controlling. He served as my PCP for about 3 years because at first, he was the only physician available at Sutter East Bay Medical Foundation in Berkeley. Then because the local practice has no other male clinicians available, it was difficult to move. Also, because I am in relatively good health, I only have to go to the doctor once or twice a year. 1) Grant Want is condescending. In the private room, he was often dismissive of my concerns and requests. This is why I absolutely hated to go in to see him. 2) He is focused on revenue. I have high blood pressure, and I have treated it with success for the last 10 years with the same medicine. However, whenever I need to get a refill, he required me to come in to get a simple refill. Because my schedule is busy as a CEO and his many refusals to issue refills, I would often be stuck without medicine for multiple weeks increasing my probability of stroke. 3) He is controlling. I know my body best. I'm 45, I run 3-5 miles 3x per week, and I am a very healthy eater. I know that hypertension is a "silent killer", and I need to stay medicated. But, it feels as if he is always in a battle of egos with me, and ultimately I have to do what he says (make another appointment) in order get a simple prescription for high blood pressure medicine. Lastly, I'm not alone. Two staff members have told me in confidence that others have reported the same concerns about him. Just read the other reviews. Three years after my original review, still remain a patient of Dr. Wang's and am very satisfied with how things have gone. Now I'm almost 70 (can't believe it) and am getting older and am having more health issues in my life. With Dr. Wang's help and analysis I've started taking a statin to control my cholesterol level and it's working well, they are dramatically reduced. Thank you! We had a serious talk about this beforehand, about the risks of not doing anything and he was both intent on helping me get better and good at explaining the options. I agreed with him and started taking them almost a year ago with good results. I like that he doesn't take everything too seriously and has an easy manner which some may take the wrong way, but I like it. I'm the same way and appreciate that, as long as you make good decisions and move forward, that being on the same page with Dr. Wang brings good results. I don't resist change and feel like exploring his recommendations versus fighting every step of the way, which may be the way some people handle health issues. Don't always do everything I'm told and sometimes question or ask for second opinions - which he always gladly accommodates. It has been a good relationship and look forward to what the future brings. read more

Went to see Dr. Wang for the first time when I moved out here (regular physical) and he is a very nice guy. Thorough, asked a lot of questions and I definitely felt he was attentive. He is very good at not glossing over the little details and makes pragmatic approaches to situations. I really like this Doctor and you should too. There's a hidden gem in the Oakland HMO medical community and his name is Dr. Grant Wang. His seemingly bottomless knowledge of multiple practice areas has given me the utmost confidence in his diagnoses, prescriptions, and referrals. That level of trust is crucial in a relationship with a primary care physician. I'm also impressed with Dr. Wang's computer facility that allows him to integrate my patient history with test results and instant internet research during an office visit. This efficiency extends beyond the exam room to convenient and responsive communications through the Sutter Health web portal. I appreciate that my time is valued. I don't have major health concerns and try to stay that way but when I do visit Dr. Wang he is always accommodating to any test requests I come up with although sometimes they may have been unnecessary in hindsight. But he is always patient and understanding. I've been his patient for over 10 years now and for the most part he is a decent doctor. He has off days every now and then when he comes across bad but during those days his fatigue is very noticeable. He's only human. The relationship with a doctor is a personal thing. People will have different experiences. I have to say in reading some of the negative reviews, that I don't recognize Dr. Wang in those reviews. In my experience over the last year, I find that Dr. Wang is thoughtful, engaged in my health, professional and personable. He communicates with an ease that I enjoy. His interaction feels very authentic. I never feel rushed. He helps me focus on improving my health; he helps me prioritize the tasks necessary to achieve success; I never feel judged. Outstanding bedside manner--funny, warm, and helpful. I was impressed by how much time he took to chat and to explain things, and somehow he was also really efficient at handling my list of issues. He had advice about which tests/shots to take but also gave me the reasoning behind it all in case I wished to disagree--he seems conscientious about the costs and benefits of certain types of care, which I deeply appreciate. I also feel like he's the first doctor in years to just take me at my word for things right away (after asking a few important questions). What a refreshing visit. Dr. Grant Wang became my internist in July 2011 and, basically, saved my life. I have avoided seeking medical care most of my adult life based on an irrational fear of anything involving medical treatment. Last year I noticed changes in my health and knew that a doctor's visit was in my future. After waiting and hoping the symptoms would somehow disappear, I finally called my insurance provider and Dr. Wang became my primary care physician. During my initial visit, I advised him of my fears and after an exam, he recommended a CAT scan and blood test (which I had avoided having done my entire life). He then prescribed medication that would put me at ease in order to have the testing done. Dr. Wang stated if this did not work for me not to ignore the problem but to come back and we would figure out something. It took me a few days but I finally went and had my first ever blood test (and it wasn't bad). Ironically, he called me the next day and thanked me for having the test done when it should have been me thanking him. He continued calling with new developments until I was assigned specialists to treat my condition. He returns phone calls, and he has even called me on a Saturday. I will forever be grateful to Dr. Wang for his patience and compassion and highly recommend him. read more

His jovial attitude makes the visit easy and I appreciate the thorough yet quick visits. He is very knowledgable and is a very good care partner. My husband and I were referred to Dr. Wang when our primary care physician, who was superb, left the area. Dr. Wang is an excellent successor, with the added advantage of his relative youth. We have 6 months of experience with him. He has been both thorough and deeply sensitive to delicate matters like planning for end-of-life care. I accompany my husband, who is cognitively impaired, so I've experienced his visits as well as my own. He is straightforward in his answers and comments, and also tuned in if my husband wants to kid around. We both feel a solid confidence in him. It was only through a scheduling mistake that we got to see him, because his patient load was already full. Right now he's not taking new patients. It's easy to see why he load is full. 10/13/16 Grant Wang is The WORST doctor - ever! Two years in a row when refills for blood pressure and/or cholesterol medications required authorization for refill, he would not refill b/c said I needed to come in for visit before he would authorize refill. How can I possibly make an appointment one day in advance (my prescription had one pill left!) Why didn't his assistant call me prior, so I could make a doctor's apt?!!!! I even went for blood work that morning but that was not sufficient!!!!!!!!!! Also, I had been seen in January, 2016!!!!!!! If he would have taken the time, he could have seen this entry! It has been much less than one year since my last visit. If he felt I had to come in for a visit, why couldn't he prescribe one refill; then I make an appointment? When you are on BP meds, you cannot skip a dose. By him refusing to refill until I was able to come in for appointment, I would miss at least two weeks worth. Needless to say, because of this incident, my blood pressure shot way up!!!!! Way to treat your patient Grant Wong!! Horrible, horrible, horrible service. Dr. Wang's actions have created extreme stress on me as witnessed by all staff who spoke to me on the phone on 10/13/16. Dr. Grant Wang was negligent and violated the standard of reasonable Care to a patient. His unconscionable treatment of me has left me extremely stressed; I feel disrespected. Note: on 10/13/16, Dr. Wang NEVER returned my call!!! I called the pharmacy at 5 p.m. - no prescription refill!! I called Wang's office at 5:40 p.m., they told me the on-call doctor would call me back. The on-call doctor called me while she was in traffic on her way home. She said she would refill the prescription for me. WHY DID MY OWN DOCTOR NOT DO THIS, EVEN THOUGH HE WAS SENT URGENT MESSAGES FROM ME THROUGHOUT THE DAY??!! In addition, in approximately 2011, I went to Dr. Wang, experiencing pains in stomach; my daughter felt I was exhibiting symptoms of appendicitis, and insisted I go to the doctor. I did. Dr. Wang told me to make appt. for sonogram. I did so right away, but I could not be seen for two weeks. My husband was shocked and said I needed to go to emergency; I could not wait two weeks! I did go to emergency; where after being in emergency seven hours, my appendix burst! Dr. Wang should have ordered STAT tests done on me immediately! Save yourself a lot of stress - do not go to Grant Wang. I wish you could mark NO STARS!! He does NOT deserve one star! Unfortunately, his staff had to listen to me (not him!!) They had to calm me down (Not him!!) His lack of professionalism impacted his staff, as well! The staff was amazing!! I spoke with Nancy - best customer service ever!!! My Doctor in the same group had gone home for the day. I needed to see someone at late in the afternoon. Dr. Wang had time to give a quick check over. He had his nurse check my lung flow and when came in he ask all the right questions, listened to my chest he told me the words I wanted to heal: You've got this cold on the run, use the medicine you have, here's a cough syrup. get plenty of sleep drink lots and I don't think you will need antiboties. I'm impressed enough with him he may be my regular doctor when she retires this year. read more

highly recommend Dr.Wang he is a very good doctor he listen to what you have to say.His MA Leslie is so nice and very helpful. the only problem i had when I went to see Dr.Wang was someone at the front desk name caloway was rushing me for me imformation her cell phone was ringing and when i first walked up to her she was eatting on something while talking to me i didn'nt like that. i think she needs a little more training.
